Is this panini spatula the greatest 21st century invention or another dust gathering kitchen tool?

Whenever a one of a kind product comes out, it always sparks some form of debate. We have the enthusiasts and then the naysayers. I guess you could say the same for the Chef’n Panini Spatula. There are those who doubt its relevance and actual usage in a kitchen, but for anyone who has burnt their fingers while trying to pick up a panini or sandwich from the grill, you know the potential this product possesses!

Williams Sonoma’s Chef’n Panini Spatula has one aim; to be your handy sidekick while you prepare some paninis. It’s your usual everyday spatula except it has a “strip down the center of the handle (that) guides slicing”. The wide platform helps to scoop the sandwich off the grill preventing any collateral damage to your fingertips. It “simplifies lifting even the largest sandwiches.” Now the slit down the middle allows you to place a knife within it, enabling you to hold down the sandwich, and cut it in half without any of your precious ingredients oozing out!

Of course, the question arises whether such a product is even needed in our kitchens, but for home cooks like me whose fall back option after a long tiring day is always the humble sandwich, the Chef’n Spatula is sure going to make my life easier!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pizza Cutter Set: No Slice Left Behind

Like most children during the ’80s, I spent much of my time watching cartoons and going to the movies. One of the bigger franchises back in the day was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I always thought they were weird, and the biggest thing I had in common with the Turtles is their love for pizza.

If you are the ninja pizza cutting sort, this is the utensil set for you. It comes with one wheel-type pizza cutter and one spatula, each with a handle that looks like a sword. I can’t say that I have ever used a spatula to get the pizza off the pan, but whatever.

The spatula and cutting blade for the pizza cutter are stainless steel, and both are dishwasher safe. The set sells for $29.99 at ThinkGeek.

Here’s a multitool spatula for the multipurpose chef

We usually have a tendency to take things for granted, until someone proves us wrong. I guess I’d never look at a spatula and go, maybe this could be better than what it currently is, but somewhere, a designer saw potential in uplifting the spatula to make it much more functional and useful than it currently is. This is the FlipFork Boss, and it’ll blow your current run-of-the-mill spatula right out of the water.

The FlipFork Boss comes with a regular spatula design that also happens to pack a serrated cutting edge (perfect for buns and tenderizing meat), a regular cutting edge for meats, vegetables, and any other stuff that may need slicing, a fork prong to help skewer and flip large pieces of meat over without a fuss, and a bottle opener for when you want to crack open a beer while you’re working the hot and sweaty grill.

The multi-tool spatula boasts of a stainless steel construction, and is securely riveted to an acacia wood handle (in full-tang fashion), known for its anti-bacterial and moisture-resistant properties. Perfect for a lazy BBQ Sunday, or even for professional grilling work, the FlipFork is proof that designs shouldn’t be taken for granted. There’s always a way to make products better than they currently are!

This species of platypus lets you clean out your nutella jars

Built on the idea of a rubber spatula, but with OTOTO’s unique brand of playful storytelling, the Splatypus is a spatula modeled on the duck-billed platypus. With a body meant for gripping, and a silicone beak that’s great for spreading jams, pastes, and spreads, the Splatypus is almost like a modern day interpretation of a product you could find in the Flintstones.

The rubber bill of the platypus is perfect for spreading, as well as cleaning jars out, allowing you to scoop out every bit of goodness from jars containing jams and spreads like Nutella, making sure there isn’t a single ounce of wastage! Additional points to the packaging for being so comically to-the-point!

Machete Spatula: for Grillin’, Not for Killin’

Sure, you can use a plain old spatula to flip your burgers on the grill, but that spatula isn’t going to intimidate anybody or make you look manly. This Machete Spatula will do both.

The neat cooking utensil from Firebox looks just like a machete. The lower end of the “blade” even has three bottle openers to help get beers open three at a time while grilling in the summer heat. It looks terrifying, but is actually harmless. It even comes with a bandana, because why not?

If it gets us closer to brownies it’s a good thing!

To keep it short and oh-so-sweet, Blisk takes the hard work out of mixing fine ingredients. Traditional countertop mixers are often large, cumbersome and messy, but Blisk is easy to use and only slightly larger than the average spatula. Controlled with a simple pair of +/- buttons, the spin speed can be set with the push of a finger to ensure you get the perfect mix. When your creations are finished baking, just give Blisk a rinse, scoop em’ up and enjoy!

U.S.S. Enterprise Spatula: Cooking with Dilithium Crystals

Breakfast. The final frontier. These are the voyages of the U.S.S. Spatula. It’s mission, to seek out new foods to turn. To boldly flip pancakes like no starship has done before.
Star Trek spatula
You know that the Enterprise’s head chef would totally use this. If they actually cooked by hand anyway. This officially-licensed Star Trek collectible is made of zinc alloy metal & BPA-free silicone. The saucer section is 6″ in diameter, giving you plenty of room to flip pancakes or whatever you’ve got in your skillet.

You will feel like Trelaine or Q, an omnipotent being toying with the Enterprise and her crew as you whip up your bacon and eggs. It is just $24.99(USD) from ThinkGeek and will be available later this month.

Spatula Robot Walks and Wobbles, But Can’t Fix You Breakfast

A while back, we posted a robot that could flip pancakes, and duo that could cook breakfast too. Well, this little fella looks the part of a kitchen robot, but can’t cook his way out of a box of Hot Pockets. That’s okay though, because the Spatula Robot has still wobbled his way into my heart.

spatula robot

This little dude was created by Instructables tech editor Randy Sarafan, and has the best legs ever for a simple robot – each one made from a kitchen spatula, and held together with zip-ties. These give it solid footing and balance. The robot was built using a handful of household parts and electronics you can mostly find at Radio Shack. It’s brains are Arduino based, so it can be programmed to do different moves than the wobbly walk shown in the video here:

Perhaps the best thing about the spatula ‘bot is that Randy has posted detailed build instructions over on Instructables, so you can make your own kitchen-dwelling robot if you have just a little bit of the DIY chromosome in your gene pool. Me, I think I’m building one to make me whipped cream on command.
