How to Organize Toys: 25 Ideas for a Safe Home and a Stress-free Playtime

If there are toddlers at home, there will inevitably be a multitude of toys as well. As a result, the play area, bedroom, and entire house can often be in a state of perpetual chaos. For parents, each day tends to follow a predictable routine where the child empties the toy bin and engages in brief play with a toy, only to become quickly captivated by something new. Consequently, the parent is left with an ongoing cycle of tidying up.

Hence, here are some tips to create a more organized storage solution for toys.

1. Label Storage Tubs

Designer: Love and Labels

Labeling the storage tubs and containers is highly recommended so that it is easier to keep the toys in them and segregate them accordingly. Note that a toy lacking a designated place to call home will likely contribute to ongoing disorganization.

2. Storage Baskets

Designer: PEHR

Baskets or toy bins serve as excellent tools for keeping similar items together while encouraging children to choose and focus on one or two toys at a time. Shelves and baskets offer a wide range of options, including diverse shapes, materials, and sizes, allowing one to find the perfect fit for your organizing the toys.

3. Transparent Containers

Designer: Jess Galvin

The transparent organization boxes are perfect for storing toys by category. Keep toys within sight as if the toy is out of sight, it’s out of a child’s mind. Ensuring that toys are visible is crucial because if they can’t see a toy, they might perceive it as non-existent.

4. Buy a Toy Storage Organizer

Designer: KidKraft

If there is no additional cabinet space, buy a toy storage organizer. Consider choosing tilted bin units that provide a clear view of the contents inside. This setup may be the perfect solution to encourage your kids to actively tidy up their toys by eliminating the need to pull out and put back the bins.

5. Lego Lover

Designer: Stephanie Treantos

If your child has a passion for Legos, consider using transparent containers for storage. By organizing the Lego pieces by color, finding and retrieving specific pieces during playtime becomes much simpler, enhancing their overall Lego-building experience.

Unique table designed with loads of storage space that furniture lovers will be absolutely smitten with

If you’ve ever even remotely spent time in the furniture design world on Instagram, then you’ve for sure come across Deniz Aktay. His simple, minimal, yet genius furniture pieces have slowly but surely taken the IG world by storm. The success of his designs lies in the fact that they’re oh-so-simple, elegant, and yet packed with massive functionality. The simplicity will almost make you wonder ‘Why didn’t I think of this?’, but unfortunately for us and luckily for Aktay, no one else can conjure these designs up except him. He’s created wonders – from a unique bookshelf that functions as a side table to a coffee table design with intriguing layers. And his ‘Overlap’ table is a creation I’m currently completely smitten by!

Designer: Deniz Aktay

A table is a pretty important addition to any living space – whether it’s a side, coffee, or console table! Once the perfect table has been set, you can start building the rest of the space around it – a comfy sofa, cute chairs, exquisite lighting, and elegant decorative pieces. Now what I absolutely love about the Overlap table is that it seems like a pretty versatile one! It looks commanding and functional enough to work as a coffee table, and also compact and cute enough to be used as a side table. And I truly appreciate how the simple design prioritizes storage – something that modern homeowners will appreciate as well, considering the space constraint issues we all face nowadays.

Deniz describes the Overlap table as a ‘table-storage design’, which quite simply explains what the piece of furniture is. Overlap basically comprises of two rotated wooden boxes that have been artfully joined and intertwined together to create a sturdy table that can also be used as a storage space. The design has a geometrically intriguing form with the wooden box at the back swinging and extended out to form the tabletop. While the other wooden box solely functions as a nifty storage unit and provides support to the tabletop placed on it.

Both the wooden boxes come together to create one homogenous unit that has been constructed craftily to form a nuanced design that provides an ample amount of storage while occupying a minimum amount of space itself. The well-designed table/storage design can be fit into the tiny corners of your home, or placed as a centerpiece in your living room.

Smart shelving system provides versatile storage and partitions in modern offices

One problem that never seems to leave us, especially if you live in a major city – is the lack of space! If you’re an independent millennial who recently moved out of their family home and into their own, then a significant issue you may be dealing with almost every day…is space constraints in your home. And this problem also tends to follow us to our offices – whether commercial or home. Commercial offices are teeming to the brim with hordes of employees, and the furniture they need – desks, chairs, office pods, conference tables, etc. And smart storage solutions for offices are often harder to come by, as compared to those for our homes. One such well-designed storage solution for commercial offices is the Combus Shelving System by Narbutas.

Designer: Narbutas

Designed by office furniture brand Narbutas, the Combus Shelving System is a super smart furniture design that not only provides versatile storage but also offers a way to partition spaces in the office. The Combus system is a pretty crafty one – it features a range of varied shelving types and heights, that can be customized in different finishes, and integrated with accessories such as planter boxes, metal bookends, and felt storage baskets to give each piece a unique and individual look.

The Combus system is available in the traditional “I” shape for shelving, but also in innovative configurations such as “L” and “T” shapes. This makes dividing the office space quite fun and interesting, irrespective if you’re creating private work areas, lounges, or meeting spots for collaborations. The closed shelving options which are higher can be used to provide privacy around areas where employees work and have meetings, while the shorter shelves can be used to partition spaces without completely segregating employees, and their opportunities to converse and connect.

The Combus system is also excellent for meetings since you can attach screens for presentations to its structure, using a metal duct that hides the cable away to provide a clean, decluttered, and wire-free look. Combus was created using recycled materials and can be easily and efficiently disassembled for reuse and adaptation, as and when needed.

Why is it noteworthy?

Staircase bins need to take into account the particular shape of stairs, but not all stairs are made equal, so they have to be a bit more flexible or at least configurable. Given how in-demand these storage solutions might be, they also need to be durable and sustainable. These two product design students from Nottingham Trent University in the UK hit both birds with one sheet of plywood.

What we like

  • Can be assembled without the use of tools
  • Great for homes with space constraints

What we dislike

  • We’re not sure how well it would hold heavier objects

9. The Axis Concept

With this more mechanical standing desk concept, you can enjoy the benefits of a healthier working lifestyle without breaking your back or your bank.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Axis Concept uses a simple axis mechanism, hence the name, to move the larger desk surface up or down as needed. As a bonus, part of the desk actually remains in position and is a good place to put items you’re less likely to move, like supplies or desk organizers. It can even be a temporary bookshelf that stays in the back of your desk when sitting or beneath the table when standing.

What we like

  • The simplicity of this system means that manufacturers can keep the number of parts and materials down to a minimum
  • Sustainable materials can be used since it has no need for electronics or even plastics
  • Replacement parts could be easier to purchase, too, presuming owners themselves can’t make those out of standardized design

What we dislike

  • The setup remains difficult to maintain in case of a multi-monitor setup that requires more wires and connectivity

10. The Plot Twist Bookshelf

PLOT TWIST Bookshelves

PLOT TWIST Bookshelf Details

Prolific German furniture designer Deniz Aktay has recently introduced the Plot Twist Bookshelf. It’s a piece of furniture that features four separate twisted wooden elements. They are connected to each other, shaping and creating a stable form.

Why is it noteworthy?

The bookshelf’s design allows it to be accessed from every side. As with most of Deniz Aktay’s product designs, this bookshelf is oddly satisfying. The curves are present as with the designer’s other projects. In addition, most of Aktay’s works have undergone some bending or twisting, as with the Wavelet, the Tie Stool, and The Pet Table.

What we like

  • The shelves can accommodate similarly sized books for a clutter-free look
  • The bookshelf is stable and stands on its own

What we dislike

  • Space consuming design

This minimal multifunctional furniture design can be configured into a bookcase, base unit or room divider

One problem that never seems to leave us, especially if you’re living in a major city – is the lack of space! If you’re an independent millennial who recently moved out of their family home and into their own, then a major issue that you may be dealing with almost every day…is space constraints in your own home. Our modern millennial homes have many virtues, but one thing they lack is space! Space constraint is something most of us end up dealing with every day. Smart storage solutions can be lifesavers in such tricky and compact situations. If you add modularity to the list of traits this solution possesses, then it’s the ultimate storage solution. And one such solution I recently came across is the Fréquence shelf by Jean Couvreur.

Designer: Jean Couvreur for Kabata

Designed by Jean Couvreur for Kabata, the Fréquence shelf is a minimal and sophisticated shelving design that functions as a multifunctional piece of modular furniture. It was also presented at Maison& Objet 2021. Boasting clean aesthetics, in a stark white color, what makes Fréquence special is the fact that it functions as a bookcase, base unit, or room divider. It comprises of a couple of geometrically shaped modules that can be combined, and mixed, and matched to create a variety of designs, in accordance with your personal taste and the requirement of your home.

You can configure the modular elements to create a small bookcase that stands close to the ground or even a large room divider for a larger living space. Fréquence is “the expression of a sober and efficient construction principle based on the exploitation of all the properties of aluminum,” said Kabata. This construction principle is a pretty significant one, since it, reduces the loss of material in the manufacturing process by 10 percent.

The different individual modules can be played around with, allowing you to create visually interesting furniture designs, owing to the rather geometric and quirky shape of the modules. Fréquence is built from aluminum, which is a pretty sturdy material and makes for a durable and hardy shelf with a smooth industrial feel, which is accentuated by the organic and dynamic shape of the furniture piece.

This geometrically fascinating bookshelf is the ultimate storage space for your prized books

And one such well-designed storage solution is the Cheft Bookshelf by Maryam Pousti.

Designer: Maryam Pousti for Studio Pousti

Maryam Pousti is the founder of the design and architecture practice Studio Pousti, and she put together a geometric bookshelf that is crafted from interlocking sheets of wood. The Cheft Bookshelf can be assembled without utilizing nails, screws, or glue. Besides functioning as a practical bookshelf, it can also be used as a room divider, or as a form of shelving for other items in your home.

“Two sets of six panels intersect through angle-specific grooves which are cut using a four-axis CNC machine. The name Cheft, meaning ‘to fasten’, derives from the way the panels slide into each other and lock in place to form a freestanding object,” said Maryam. To be precise twelve interlocking sheets of wood were used to build Cheft. The bookshelf is also accompanied by a table and bar stool which all together form the Cheft furniture collection. All three furniture pieces are inspired by the geometrical patterns of traditional Persian architecture. The bookshelf’s warm wooden aesthetics allow it to harmoniously merge with the interiors of any modern contemporary home.

The geometrically intriguing bookshelf is available in colored MDF and has an option of solid woods such as walnut and cherry. The design won the Prize Design for Modern Furniture and Lighting 2022 award, has also been displayed at Design Week in Milan, Paris, and New York, and is showcased at the European Centre Athens as part of its permanent collection.

This uniquely flexible table can easily pivot to be your work space and storage area

Even though we’re almost back to normal when it comes to going back to work, or at least the office, I still want to make my house a work space. Whether it’s for my actual job or some of my side jobs, I want to have a space which gets me in a working headspace rather than a place where I will be tempted to watch Netflix or something. That’s why I’m always interested in seeing designs or concepts of tables or furniture that will help you become more productive or organized.

Designer: Ahmet Özdemir

The Route Table is a concept for a working table that can be turned into various things that can help you work. You can move some parts around and turn them into a work table, a bookshelf, or a storage space, and it can even be all three at the same time. It has two large main parts, one fixed and one movable. The latter can be used at different angles, depending on what you need it to be, with the mechanism helping you to turn it into the right piece of furniture for your current need.

The fixed part is simply a bookshelf or storage space with opal glass doors to protect the books inside or whatever you choose to put inside the “cabinet”. There’s also space on top of it with its high shelf arrangement, although that part will be covered if you move the table to close in on it in case you don’t need the table to work on. There is also a movable light fixture on the desk part so you can place it in the area where you’re actually working on, if you need a bit of extra light.

The movable desk part may be a bit too large or long for smaller spaces. But if you need a bigger table for your computer and all the work documents, then it’s the perfect size for you. It can be used as an extension of the storage or be placed perpendicular to it. And when you need more space in your room, you can just close it on top of the cabinet. This Route table concept comes in pretty handy if you need a more flexible kind of furniture.

1. The Nook Desk

The Nook desk right from its appearance and thereafter has a story of material molding, matte finish, and a simple idea that’s still more than an ordinary desk. The Nook desk surface, and nifty selves at the edges, hold key to the table’s idea of maximizing productivity with minimalistic use of material.

Why is it noteworthy?

New desks surfacing on our computer screens day in and day out are generally drenched heavily in the wave of maximizing gadgetry on the tabletop courtesy of cable organizers, built-in wireless chargers et al. Atkay keeps it simple and undistracting. His idea of a desk will therefore not revibrate with most hybrid/work-from-home taskforce. However, if you’re someone like me who loves a desk clear of clutter and only wants a book or two in close proximity; this is where the search can end.

What we like

  • Nook desk’s personalized design aesthetics shall help you have most of your reading/writing material well within your reach
  • The personalized design is achieved by separating multiple layers of plywood at the edges of the table, creating storage layers on the bottom of the tabletop

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

2. The Boomerang Bed

The Boomerang bed attempts to be more than just a bed. Teixeira transformed a simple bed into a little living area of its own with the help of an integrated table.

Why is it noteworthy?

The integrated table can be considered the star of this furniture piece. Just like its name, this handy table “comes and goes”. By simply shifting the table or changing its placement, the adjustable table can adopt various roles and perform multiple functions. You can slide the table from one end of the bed to the other. If you position it at the edge of the table, it can function as a regular desk for you to place your laptop on and work from home.

What we like

  • The headboard is upholstered, so it’s pretty cozy to rest against while eating your meals or working on your laptop
  • Works well for smaller and compact homes

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

3. The PLOGA Rack

Functioning as a coat rack, the PLOGA rack is a great option for your entryway, if you’re facing the woe of space constraints. What makes the wall-mounted coat rack quite intriguing is the fact that it features vertical hooks!

Why is it noteworthy?

The hooks are adjustable and placed vertically on the rack. You can slide them from left to right, creating a flexible form that can be changed whenever. This provides more space to store your items, ensuring that they aren’t layered on top of one another.

What we like

  • Can be placed in any room of your home
  • Can be used to store a variety of items

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

4. The Hanging Desk Organizer Set

Many productivity gurus advocate having a proper place on your desk, even for more “transient” objects that come and go. Some have a tray, a literal inbox, or even a basket, but those often take up precious space that could be used for more permanent things. They’re also a “one size fits all” kind of thing, so you can’t really use them for anything else or even arrange their parts unless you opted for a modular bin. The Hanging Desk Organizer Set solves all those problems by hanging over the edge of your desk and giving you the freedom to rearrange it to suit your needs.

Why is it noteworthy?

As with many seemingly magical modular systems, the secret to the rack’s trick is magnets, very strong magnets. The rack itself is made from sturdy steel and doesn’t actually have any distinct markings on its own. It looks like a square root or radical symbol, where its short flap sticks to the edge of your desk without screws or magnets. The V-shaped space is where you can place things like magazines, letters, files and folders, and more.

What we like

  • You can even hang your book over the highest edge as a makeshift bookmark in case you need to quickly pause what you were reading

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

5. Three-Six Desk

This concept desk was specially designed for someone’s birthday and is both functional and also eye-catching. The body itself is your usual walnut desk but what makes it different is the orange metal inlay surrounding it. It’s not just there for aesthetic purposes although the orange metal surrounding the wood does make a striking design. But the purpose of this inlay is to let you place stuff around your desk without them actually taking up space on your desk.

Why is it noteworthy?

The front inlay is actually part of the drawers and is used to open them. The sides are angular so you could put office accessories like scissors, staplers, pens, etc. You can also place your mobile phone, tablet, and other media devices so that you can reach them easily but they won’t be on the desk exactly. The back inlay is wider than the sides so you can put bigger items there like books, plants, pen holders, and other decorative things.

What we like

  • The inlays can also be used to add additional storage accessories in case you need it

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

6. Spectator

Named ‘Spectator’, this intriguing bookshelf definitely looks as if it’s staring right back at you! It seems to be made of interlocking jigsaw puzzle pieces, and each piece looks like a distorted human face!

Why is it noteworthy?

The Spectator Series of shelves is as much a psychological art piece as it is a piece of furniture. In its small way, it demonstrates the wonder of our brains that try to fill in the gaps to complete forms and ideas, like how it is able to see faces in shapes that are so far removed from human heads. With so many faces hiding in plain sight, the roles of observer and observed are also reversed, at least in our mind’s eye again.

What we like

  • The shelf adheres to minimalist design principles despite the odd shapes of its pieces

What we dislike

  • Not everybody would like the aesthetics of this piece

8. Wolf

Are you the kind of person who would look at clouds and try to see what shapes or creatures you can see there? If yes then you’re probably a pretty creative person who can see all sorts of things in different figures and structures even without hearing the name of the product concept. So even though there’s no description or explanation, you probably understand why this new product concept for a stool is called Wolf.

Why is it noteworthy?

The German-based designer is making a name for himself with his unique takes on simple furniture like bookshelves, lamps, and chairs. This new concept for a stool is called Wolf and if you let your imagination run a little wild, you’ll be able to see a wolf in the shape of this minimalist piece of furniture. In fact, the shape of the stool looks like a logo for a new video game or a brand that gives off a scary, wolf vibe.

What we like

  • The triangular middle part can actually be turned into a small storage area

What we dislike

  • Doesn’t seem like a very cozy seating space

9. Wallganize

Organizers and containers that stick to walls aren’t exactly new, but Wallganize adds a touch of magic to them. It isn’t simply a collection of boxes, clips, and rings that you stick on a wall. It is, instead, a system that offers both a platform and a set of modules that firmly attach to those platforms using strong magnets, letting you mix and match as you need and please.

Why is it noteworthy?

Wallganize has three platforms or bases that you “stick” your containers on. The BlankStatic is your most basic, rectangular sheet of magnet where you can attach boxes or whatnot willy-nilly. There’s also an “Attachnote” platform, which is practically a magnetic notebook organizer for those times when you can’t take your wall with you.

What we like

  • You can create your own pattern of hexagons to liven up your wall while still helping you keep your life uncluttered
  • You can simply rearrange the boxes or even relocate the platforms to another part of the wall

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

10. June

June Storage and Display Tray Design

June Storage and Display Trays Colors

June is a new system or storage and display trays that may be helpful to those who want to Marie Kondo their stuff. No, this won’t really carry all your things, but it looks like a fun and stylish way to keep things clean and tidy. Of course, having a clean and clutter-free desk is necessary, especially if you want to get work done quickly and smartly.

Why is it noteworthy?

June is designed as a versatile system of storage and display trays. This desk accessory is very functional and practical for anyone with a work desk. This modern organizing system is based on the idea that storing things vertically can be more efficient. Such vertical solutions save up desk or counter space.

What we like

  • The aesthetics of June is modern with a hint of mid-century
  • You can use it in your office, bedroom, dining room, or kitchen

What we dislike

  • No complaints!
