DJI’s latest action camera just made the GoPro look like an expensive hunk of plastic

With an incredibly diverse eco-system of snap-on modules that let you practically attach the camera anywhere you want, the DJI Action 2 is what you get when you create a camera after intense research and design-thinking… not by simply copying what the rest of the market is doing.

Drone and gimbal makers extraordinaire, DJI seems to be completely disrupting the non-smartphone consumer camera market. The OM, Osmo, and Pocket give you a set of really powerful stabilized on-ground recording capabilities, while DJI’s drones really speak for themselves… With the Action 2, however, the company hopes to conquer yet another market that was up until now dominated by GoPro.

“The blueprint of an action cam is a familiar one – tough, waterproof, in a compact body”, says the narrator in the video above… and in doing so, perfectly describes the pit into which most tech companies fall – the pit of the ‘template’. It’s easy to be the second or the third best company in any domain… simply follow your biggest competitor and provide ‘the next best option’ for consumers to consider. This is something most action cameras have been doing by simply recreating what the GoPro pushed out. Once you hacked the template, you could make your action camera cheaper, have more memory, have a better battery, or cloud storage, and voila… your product was a worthy competitor to the GoPro. What the Action 2 aims at doing is redrawing that template by asking itself “If the GoPro didn’t exist, what would an action camera in 2021 look like?”

What the Action 2 gets right with its design isn’t just the camera (after all, DJI’s cameras are pretty fantastic to begin with) but rather how the camera is operated. The company designed an exhaustive list of modules, holders, and even accessories to go with their camera, all of which affix themselves to the Action 2 using an incredibly powerful set of magnets (a la MagSafe). The modules simply snap on or snap off, and give you a variety of use-cases, from being able to hold the camera in your hand, fix it to your chest/arm/head, attach it to your helmet, handlebar, or dashboard, place it on a steady surface, or even go underwater with it. If there’s a place you could take your Action 2, or an activity you could conduct with your Action 2… DJI’s thought of it and designed a module/accessory for it.

In many ways, this holistic approach is GoPro’s undoing. The way DJI’s modules just magnetically snap on or snap off the Action 2 make it really easy to use the camera anywhere and anyhow… and the camera’s all-terrain + waterproof design, 155° Super-Wide lens, powerful digital stabilization algorithm, and the 4-microphone recording setup make the Action 2 an incredibly compelling purchase.

Perhaps the Action 2’s most defining feature (and you’ll see it practically all their images) is the snap-on touchscreen module. Traditionally, all action cameras have lenses on the front and displays on the rear… and that’s great for filming everything except yourself. DJI’s Front Touchscreen Module basically lets you turn the action camera into a wide-angle vlogging camera. The module snaps right on and lets you attach other accessories like the tripod, selfie stick, car-mount, etc. Moreover, snapping it on doesn’t just give you a front-facing extra screen… it gives you an extra battery pack too, doubling the Action 2’s recording time to 160 minutes, and also adds extra mics for crisper audio recording – a feature that vastly benefits vloggers and influencers who want to be in the spotlight.

Disney Working on Robot Stunt Doubles

Remember a month ago when Disney’s Stickman was the best robotic stuntman technology they had? Good times. Things are about to get way more human and way more creepy. Now the company is working on a series of truly acrobatic, humanoid stunt robots with their Stuntronics project.

In the video below, the daredevil robots can be seen doing different acrobatic tricks as they get launched in the air and land in nets. The robots are self-correcting and self-balancing as they hurtle through the air. One of the ‘bots even appears to soar through the air like a superhero – though it can’t land on its own – at least not yet. That one pose that it does in midair reminds me of Iron Man. I predict that by 2044, these things will be zipping around Disney theme parks and occasionally colliding with birds.

Naturally, we can expect to see these robots in their theme parks in the future, as well as acting as stunt doubles in movies. Sorry stuntmen, it looks like you guys and gals are about to be put out of business by robots. Disney is well on the way to becoming Westworld. I just hope we are ready for the robot uprising when it happens.

Guy Dives Into 1,000 Armed Mouse Traps on a Trampoline

Getting your finger or toe hit by a mousetrap is terrible. The pain is excruciating. Seriously, you have no idea. Now imagine diving into 1,000 mousetraps on a trampoline. That would be crazy right? Yep. Well, the internet is all about crazy and some guy did just that. And you get to watch it in slow motion.

It is amazing to watch as Dan from The Slow Mo Guys jumps in and all of those traps go off. It’s kind of beautiful, and by the time it’s all over, he has them stuck on his pants, in his hair and everywhere.

They must be using wimpy traps because he says it didn’t really hurt, and he just got tiny “nips”. Not that I wanted him to get hurt, but really there was no danger involved here other than the wonky ladder he jumped off of, so I feel kind of let down. Is that bad

It is fun to watch them all go off at once though. I never get tired of slow-mo videos.

Massive Drone Pulls a Snowboarder into the Air

I sat here and watch this video of this gigantic drone pulling a snowboarder around and wanted to call BS right way. The problem is that I am half convinced this is legit and they actually did this. After all, passenger Casey Neistat is known for pulling off some impressive stunts, like that time he went snowboarding through Manhattan.

Plus, we have seen a drone pull a surfer in the past and this drone looks quite a bit more powerful. Neistat not only gets pulled down the slopes but up into the air and flown around like a guy hanging from a rescue helicopter.

I don’t know if it’s real or not, but it is awesome. You can watch both the video and the behind the scenes video here and see what you think.

Fake or not, it’s awesome and Finland is a beautiful place.

Hurricane Matthew Kitesurfer: Balls of Steel, or Balls of Stupid?

I bet this kitesurfer over in Florida was super gung-ho to get out there in the massive surf and winds created by Hurricane Matthew. He probably thought he was going to be famous and stuff, and he sort of is. I mean I can see in those few seconds as his kite keeps soaring into the air that he was trying to decide if he needed to jump or if he would end up in Oz if he hung on.

I can also imagine he crapped himself (at least he wore his black wetsuit) and perhaps had a heart attack right in his butthole. I’m not sure that is possible, but I bet if he farted at the zenith of that kite climb only dogs would have heard it.

Somehow, he managed to land it, and undoubtedly he went home and asked all his friends if they had recorded the news that day. I can only imagine he would have died if he fell off or at least broke his ass and ended up in the iron butt.

Skydivers Play on the Ultimate Swing

Skydivers are pretty fearless. I mean, what is left to be scared of after falling toward the Earth from insane heights. So naturally, skydivers are looking for new cool stuff to do up there. Like swing on a giant swing suspended between two hot air balloons.

Marco Fuerst performs the Megaswing over the Waldviertel area, Austria on July 7th 2016

This stunt, courtesy of Red Bull, took four skydivers, two hot air balloons, a 400 foot-long rope with a seat on the end, and a climb to about 6,000 feet in a hot air balloon. They call it the MEGA SWING. It is basically every kid’s dream, who has ever swung on a swing at the playground.

I don’t think anyone is going to beat this swinging record unless they go to the edge of space. Care to give it a try, Felix Baumgartner?

Some Jerk Drops an iPhone 7 Plus off the World’s Tallest Building, Because Why Not?

Youtuber TechRax likes to buy expensive gadgets and destroy them for views. Yeah, this kind of stuff gets old pretty quick, but it’s gotten him over 5 million subscribers. And the only reason I’m sharing this video with you guys is because his latest video has Rax at the top of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. You can guess what comes next.

iphone_drop_1

He throws a brand new iPhone 7 Plus from the top. I’m pretty sure you could kill someone down below with an iPhone, or at least hurt them severely, so yeah, this is a stupid stunt. I only watched it because I wondered if he was actually going to find the phone afterward. So now you have to watch it too.

I’m just hoping some other jerk throws a smartphone off a building and Rax is below. Or it would be cool if the iPhone survived and some stranger picked it up and walked off with it. That would be Karma.

Freefly ALTA 8 Drone Pulls a Surfer, Invents Dronesurfing

Drones can be pretty cool, and are a great way to capture images of whatever you are doing from the air. There are a bunch of drones out there with some of them being the cheap consumer quadcopters that you play with, and others being incredibly expensive and aimed at professionals. Freefly Systems makes that second kind, with drones like its ALTA 8 octocopter.

dronesurfing_1

The company took this massive electric drone and rigged it up with a towrope. They then had a dude jump in on a surfboard sort and get towed around the lake by the drone.

The drone maker says that it was able to make about three 30-second passes pulling the surfer per battery pack. It’s hard to believe that the drone was powerful enough to stay aloft and pull the surfer, but the surfer did need to get a running start to get going. It’s a very cool video, and worth a watch.
