Cut Like a Ninja with Samurai Sword Scissors

Samurai Sword Scissors, try saying that three times fast. These are definitely some of the coolest looking scissors we’ve seen, because let’s face it- most scissors just look like scissors. But the Nihonto Hasami Japanese Sword Scissors are different, it looks like a katana sword. Except miniature. And slightly less deadly. But still dangerous, especially if you’re running with them. Is it weird that we’re not supposed to run with scissors but running with a sword is perfectly acceptable? What’s up with that?

These scissors come in three color choices- black, purple, or red. Just like real katana swords, they come with a sheath (scabbard if you want to get technical and I know you do). So I guess you actually can run with them, sorry Mom and every elementary school teacher ever. They’re made in Japan, no surprise, of cutlery grade stainless steel. Make it your weapon of choice for your next art project.

Documentary Shows Real Sword Combat Was Nothing Like Video Games or Movies

I like sword fights as much as the next guy. I mean, maybe I like them more. I’m not into renaissance fairs or LARPing, but I did take fencing way back in the day. I also rather like movies and video games with sword fights because they look cool.

As it turns out, back in the days when the sword was the best weapon around, the fights were nothing like what we see on screen. A fascinating documentary called Back to the Source introduces us to the community of Historical European Martial Arts, who do their best to replicate period-accurate combat, through a mix of swordplay, grappling, and wrestling.

It turns out the real fights weren’t pretty, and no one cared about anything other than sticking the other guy through their armor with a blade. The documentary is nearly 90 minutes long, but if you’re into history, swords, and fighting it’s definitely worth the time.

Prime Swords DRAGONS: Foam Fighters

I think Daenerys Targaryen would totally back this Kickstarter project. The project is to create a line of foam swords for kids (and adults) to play with that have interchangeable parts so you can repair them or make your own. We have seen similar swords from the same designer, Tyler Richins, in the past and that project funded easily.

Richins is now back with a new project called Prime Swords DRAGONS. There are three styles with an ice dragon, fire dragon, and a mecha dragon. I like the mecha dragon because robots and dragons are twice as awesome.

The project is seeking $100,000 on Kickstarter. A pledge of $45 or more will get you one of the swords around April 2017. You can get all three designs for $125. So yeah, you may have to wait a full year for your sword, but dragons!

Key Armory Makes Keys That Look Like Swords

Key Armory makes keys that look like swords, because opening your door is much more fun with a tiny weapon. You can get key swords that look like the weapons from Lord of the Rings, Kingdom Hearts, Zelda, and even Kylo Ren’s lightsaber.

They currently plan to offer five designs: Link’s Master Sword from Zelda, the Keyblade from Kingdom Hearts, King Ellesar’s Anduril from Lord of the Rings, Kylo Ren’s lightsaber from The Force Awakens, and Sting from The Hobbit. They will probably offer more assuming they blow through their Kickstarter goals. You can get these in two key types: Kwikset KW1 and Schlage SC1, which should cover about 95 percent of household locks. They will create the keys and ship them uncut, so you will have to have them cut for you at the hardware store.

Check out the Kickstarter and for $10(USD) you can get yourself a cool sword key. Totally worth it to have a unique key.

Turn Any Branch Into A Sword

sword-creator-1

Kids will go into the woods and pretend to be swordsmen. This is the way kids work. We think. But if they’re going to be doing that, there’s a chance one of them will get their knuckles hit and come back home in tears. That won’t happen if you get them the Nature Sabre-sword Creator from MonkeyBuisness. It’s a simple silicone attachment that fits at the end of a branch and creates a finger guard that not only makes the “sword” look more legit, it also gives your child some semblance of protection. They’re $11, comes in three colors, and is available now.

Sabertron: A Foam Sword With Electronic Scoring

sabertron

Sword fighting over the last few thousand years has had the unfortunate tendency to leave one of the opponents somewhat dead. In today’s more civilized society, death during swordplay is often avoided through the use of, well, non-lethal swords. Sadly, these are analogue affairs, leaving you to decide amongst yourselves who scores how many hits, and opening the door to the cheat who won’t admit to losing. Sabertron is a foam sword that introduces a digital component, one that should help you determine a victor more accurately. Outfitted with sensors, it knows when a hit has been blocked, and when it’s made contact with a soft body. Hit that soft flesh often enough, and you can walk away victorious. Perfect for those long Larping sessions, a $99 pledge will get you a pair, while more money buys more sophisticated “blades”.
