What Games Are People Playing? The Orr Group Shows off Roll20 Stats

Roll20 is an interesting game platform. It’s designed for you and your distant friends to get together, just like the good old days, for a session of a tabletop RPG. The difference is that you’re using a virtual tabletop that comes with a ton of digital apps and assistance. The Orr Group, which is the company behind Roll20, has released some stats on what its players are playing. Where is your game of choice?

One of the things that the Orr Group mentioned in the report was that 10% of players identify as Warhammer 40K gamers, but less than 2% are actually playing the game on Roll20. The report says that this is puzzling to the group, based on the fact that 40k is usually played 1v1, but if you look at what is actually listed under “Warhammer 40k” on the website, it’s all RPGs that aren’t Dark Heresey, which has its own heading.

It seems that nobody is playing 40k, but that the Orr Group thinks that’s what this heading refers to. Notice anything else interesting in here?

“Mordheim: City of the Damned” Looks Much More Polished Than Usual GW Games

The occasional Games Workshop-licensed game is spectacular, but the vast majority of them look more like hastily assembled student projects than professional releases. It’s a huge shame, since the evocative setting is tons of fun, but I’m scared to buy most games until I’ve seen reviews telling me that the game is a Dawn of War or a Dark Omen rather than one of the awkward Space Hulk adaptations.

Mordheim: City of the Damned looks like a Warhammerified version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and it’s based on one of my favorite tabletop games of all time. Better still, my favorite cowardly, weirdly charming, and totally creepy ratmen, the Skaven, are a playable faction.

Focus Interactive and Rogue Factor are putting it on Steam Greenlight later this month, so if you’re champing at your proverbial bit to raid the ruins of Mordheim in search of dangerous and valuable warpstone, you won’t have to wait long.

Warhammer 40K Blood Angels Costume: Don’t Mess with the Space Marines

I’m not a fan of Warhammer 40,000 myself, but this Blood Angels Space Marine costume looks so awesome, I want to check it out and see what I have been missing. Youtuber Pilerud scratch built this Warhammer 40K Space Marine Blood Angel Tactical Sergeant, 7th company, 9th squad, costume himself.

He obviously loves Warhammer, having devoted 400 hours over 10 months to making this badass costume. The completed outfit weighs 25kg (~55 pounds) and stands about 215 cm tall (~7 feet). I am about 183 cm without armor. He used foam and hot glue and as well as other tricks to make it look more like the miniatures. Mech sounds are provided by ThinkGeek’s awesome little Mega Stomp Panic box. Check it out in action in the video below:

The cost? About €2500 (~$3206 USD) I love how everything moves as he is walking around. It’s all very fluid. Nice job!

Best Warhammer 40K Costume Ever

I’ll be honest- I haven’t played Warhammer 40K myself, but I do know the soldiers in the game can be pretty bad-ass. Though no tiny game figurine or polygons on my computer screen could possibly compare to this:

I spotted this ginormous Warhammer 40K costume over on Dezilith’s DeviantArt page, and it is truly epic. It was made by Daniel Høgh (Boltshells) and Justina Šniukštaitė (Roses) over at Roses and Boltshells, who make custom props and cosplay accessories, and it truly shows off how amazingly skilled they are at their trade.

The costume is based on a Imperial Fists Terminator Captain, Tancred, but since I’m not too familiar with the game, I’ll just have to take their word for it. All I know is that I wouldn’t want to run into this guy in a dark alley – or in broad daylight for that matter.

It’s made from foam and can be walked in. It took them about 2 months and $2,000 (USD) of parts to build, and it looks like it was worth every penny. Its creators say there are still a few kinks to be worked out (like rivets coming off while walking), but fully expect to resolve these minor quirks.
