Recycled Yogurt Pots & Eucalyptus Wood Were Used to Make This Minimal + Sustainable Work Table

Employees have slowly but surely made their way back to corporate offices, and it is certainly a transitionary phase where they learn to adapt and settle down in an office space once again. In such a situation, it’s important to add well-designed furniture designs that help them feel comfortable, space, and motivated in their workplace. And adding the right furniture designs can greatly contribute to creating an office that is conducive to motivation and productivity. And one such furniture design that I recently came across is the Work Series II Table by Another Country.

Designer: Another Country

Designed by British furniture brand Another Country, the Work Series II Table is a long and minimal table built by combining timber and recycled plastic, in an attempt to create more sustainable products for office environments. The Work Series II table is a thoughtfully-designed furniture piece equipped with a frame made from eucalyptus wood. A tabletop insert made entirely from recycled yogurt pots by Welsh manufacturer Smile Plastics is fitted into the wooden frame. This creates an interesting material with a terrazzo-like appearance. The multiple flecks from the foil lids add intriguing metallic hints to the tabletop.

“We champion natural materials but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t other solutions that are equally valid, maybe sometimes better,” said Another Country founder Paul de Zwart.  “You can’t really recycle timber,” he added. “You can obviously reuse it but if you burn it or dispose of it, you release the carbon that’s embedded.” “The workplace has a high turnover of furniture. So inevitably, while we may design for things to last, in an office environment they are unlikely to do so. The amount of office furniture that gets thrown out annually is shocking.” The Work Series II Table is an initiative on the part of Another Country to build workplace furniture using recycled and renewable materials, that have a minimal carbon footprint and do not emit any harmful VOCs. The table can also be easily disassembled and recycled in the future.

Since the tabletops are removable and recyclable, the tops can be replaced, and the frames can be maintained and kept, after five or ten years. Smile Plastics can then buy the tops back, recycle them, and create new products.

The Work Series II table is manufactured using glue, with no added formaldehyde, and is coated using zero-VOC plant-based finishes.

Almost three years into the pandemic, you should already know by now the importance of getting up after long hours of sitting in front of the computer. Sure, you can buy all the sports equipment that can fit in your home gym and buy all the stylish workout clothes, but for many of us that need to sit for hours to concentrate on work, a standing desk may be more beneficial. ASYTRON Desk is one reliable mobile workspace you can use anywhere

ASTYRON Lightweight Transforming Furniture Release

Not another transforming furniture—that is probably your initial reaction upon learning about the ASYTRON. Even the name is very Transformers, but you will probably love its mechanism like most furniture pieces with similar inspiration.

The Asytron is a lightweight transforming furniture item designed by two industrial designers from Germany. This mobile workspace is made using a light construction method. The design aims to solve several issues digital nomads face and those that spend most of their long hours in the home office or a coworking space.

There are a lot of related products and concepts, so shopping for the proper workstation can be a challenge. A mobile workspace shouldn’t just be portable as it should really work for the user. It should be sturdy enough for frequent relocation and with frequent assembly and disassembly.

With more people having flexible work environments, it is only right for a personal space to be available. That can be achieved easily with the numerous solutions we have seen. However, many different scenarios must be covered, including frequent change of location, temporary team spaces, flexible office/classroom, easy to transport, modularly expandable, functional, and space-saving when not in use.

ASTYRON Lightweight Transforming Furniture Maker

Project ASTYRON Lightweight Transforming Furniture

The Asytron answers all those concerns as it is dynamic, flexible, ergonomic, and even aesthetically pleasing. It’s a desk and chair in one but can be folded together to save precious space. It’s ideal for flexible offices and coworking spaces as you can easily assemble, pack, and transport the item.

ASTYRON Lightweight Transforming Furniture Project

Asytron is truly lightweight, thanks to the materials used: aluminum tubes and extruded aluminum profiles. As described by the designers, the Asytron comes with a cushioning formation inspired by those automotive racing seats. It is ergonomic, lightweight, and rigid. It’s modular so you can combine the pieces. It’s ergonomic too with the lumbar support and a notch for the spine. There is also a hinge that easily swings and folds.

ASTYRON Lightweight Transforming Furniture

Every piece can fit a trunk when folded. Integrated features include a USB cable reel, USB multi-hub,
and inductive charging station for wireless charging. With this thing, you can work wherever you want. You don’t just bring your laptop with you as you can also now bring your table and chair. It’s something needed these days since the pandemic isn’t over, and many people are encouraged to work from home, which means work from anywhere.

Spiky is a desk concept with enough room to fit your working or lifestyle needs

Because I spend most of the day seated in front of my computer, I like looking at different designs of desks, tables, and other furniture that will fit my lifestyle. I also like those work areas that are not just for placing my computer on but can also store my work supplies and all the other things that I need for when I’m working. It’s a bonus if that piece of furniture is also compact but a lot of these things do take up some space. That’s why they’ll remain “dream” furniture for me since I have limited space.

Designer: Alena Prokhorova

This Spiky Desk Concept for a work table and also a display table may not be as storage-friendly as some of the ones that we previously covered but it does serve as more than just a place where you put things on top of. It doesn’t really have spikes as the name might suggest but the storage space underneath does have some uniquely shaped structures. They’re more triangles than spikes and they serve as a textured place to place some of your office supplies.

The place under the main surface area is not that huge but can be used to store things like pens, rulers, scissors, and other office supplies, at least in the parts with the triangular-shaped spaces. These spaces are on the left and right sides of the table. In the middle is a flat surface where you can place things like your books, notebooks, documents, or even your laptop when you need to take a break and stop using it.

The main table is of course just a flat surface that can be used as a work table or a display table. If you’re doing the former, it has enough space to fit in your computer and all other documents you may need. If you’re going to use it as a display area, there’s also enough space to put things like books, toys, figurines, etc. It’s also big enough to place things like a tabletop model display. As we mentioned though, this table is pretty big so it won’t fit into small spaces.

The tabletop surface has a wooden finish but the storage underneath seems to have a more industrial finish. There is no information about what material is used so we can only talk about what the finish looks like. If I had space in my place, this concept is something that I can dream of placing there.

This height adjustable smart table with customizable modules keeps your WFH space organized

The hybrid work lifestyle is scaling new highs as work from home continues to be a way to help curb the spread of the coronavirus. Considering the altering furniture demands of users confined to their homes, designers and brands are creating smart tables integrated with features to make working from home easier. This is exactly what the new Rune Modular Table intends to do as well, in a way not imagined before.

We have seen IKEA step up to transform the entire work desk into a wireless charger and Razer design a conceptual table with separate modules users can swap and install as they desire. Continuing in the same space, designer Mok Zijie foresees an intelligent table with cleaver features like height adjustment and modules that fit seamlessly into the sockets concealed in the table’s surface.

With the Rune table and its accompanying modules, the designer intends to create a new standard of productivity for a hybrid work population that is continuously juggling – day in a day out – between different roles resulting in a cluttered table every time they set out for a new task. If you have been working from home or know someone who is caught up in the act, you will instantly relate to the problem of clutter on the table. Wires, stationary, smart devices all piled up on your work desk is a problem that needs a solution, and Rune sets out to provide that through a good quality minimalistic desk.

The Rune smart table has a slim form factor, yet holds cutouts on the surface with magnetic sockets to accommodate various modules for a lamp, speaker, wireless charger, stationery container and more. Users can customize the table – with modules of choice – from the Rune website. These modules flush right into the slots on the smart table allowing seamless visual experience. Onboard is the Rune Controller module that provides users complete control over the table and its configuration. When a new module is connected to the magnetic socket, the controlled automatically detects the installed module and offers options to control and uninstall it to make space for a new module.

If you’re struggling with a cluttered desk and storage is a primary focus, the Rune Modular Table is conceptualized to adjust to your requirements and minimize unnecessary pile up on your workstation to make it look light and clean at all times.

This sleek modern desk finds versatility and simplicity through a system of organizational wooden bars!

Bars is a Scandinavian-inspired desk design that finds versatility and simplicity through an organizational system of wooden beams.

Desks do it all for us. Not only do we work there, but they become our storage bins, our mail sorting cabinets, our coffee tables. With all of their versatility, these different uses aren’t typically put into consideration when designing desks.

When desks are built too simply, they run the risk of not being able to handle all of the supplemental uses we impose on them. The more complex the desk, the less likely we are to intuit all of its uses. Product designer, João Teixeira understood the assignment when he designed Bars, a minimalist wooden desk that’s built on intuitive design principles to balance versatility with simplicity.

Aptly named, Bars is a modern desk that finds multiple uses through an overlapping system of wooden bars. Designed to help organize our work and off days, the system of bars provides clever, integrated storage options to keep our writing utensils and smartphones in designated areas and keep our working space free of clutter. Carved along each one of the wooden beams, Teixeira incorporated narrow, sunken storage bins that are just the right size to keep our erasers, pens, and stationery.

Along the desk’s rear wooden beams, Teixeira hollowed out a lengthy slot that fastens our smartphones into place while we work, keeping the threat of endless scrolling at arm’s length. Teixeira also envisioned the bars working as a sort of resting place for bulkier work-related items like over-ear headphones. Wrapping around three sides of Bars, the organizational system of wooden beams helps keep the desk’s working space free of mess so our workdays can be too.

Designer: João Teixeira

Bars is a simply built, yet versatile desk that keeps a modern, minimalist profile.

Inspired by Scandinavian design, Bars is minimalist by design and keeps a natural, polished wooden look.

This detailed desk design provides privacy while you work, and we wish IKEA got inspired by it!

Ever since work from home became the new norm, I’ve truly been realizing the importance of a great home office! Our home office should possess a nurturing environment that amps up our productivity and efficiency. And one very important element of such an environment is our desk! A good desk helps us work comfortably and effectively. Not only should our desks be clean, but they should also sport an ergonomic design! The Ash Desk by Pavel Vetrov is one such prime example.

Inspired by a visit to a library, Vetrov wanted to design a desk that embodies a modern workplace but also manages to provide privacy – a desk that invites you into your own little world, where your work is at the forefront, and you are completely focused on it. By adding a tissue partition to Ash, Vetrov was able to accomplish this. He was successful in creating “a special atmosphere of isolation”. The center of the tabletop features a cable hole, so cords and cable can be easily stored, without interfering with your work routine. There is also a little hidden compartment below the tabletop, wherein you can easily store your office accessories, documents, files, and other miscellaneous items. When it comes to aesthetics, Ash has an extremely warm and organic feel. Soft lines and dark colors allow it to seamlessly integrate with the interiors of your workspace. The neutral tone of brown used ensures that it doesn’t clash with any other piece of furniture in your home office.

Ash is a sophisticated and delicate piece of furniture that not only rates high on aesthetics but on functionality as well. It’s the kind of desk that will instantly make you feel at ease and allow you to dive headfirst into your work. It provides privacy, and functions as a personal cubicle of your own, no matter where you place it. Vetrov’s Ash is attention-grabbing, but definitely not loud! It just feels right.

This two-tiered desk uses loops to provide plenty of storage for your 2021 WFH setup

Our living spaces have seen a lot of changes this past year, but none more than our work-from-home offices. Whether you’re still working from bed or if you’ve redesigned a corner of your bedroom to fit your desk, working from home has changed the spaces where we work. With that, we’re also scrubbing our walls and ditching any hint of maximalism for the fresh look of minimalism. To construct a desk that accommodates this mode of working from home while sticking to this renewed wave of minimalism, João Teixeira designed Loop Desk, a simple computer desk that’s built for the organizing nut in each of us.

The two-tiered desktop has plenty of working space and a slim build that easily adapts to any room, making it a solid choice for future WFH renovations. In addition to its slim build, Loop Desk reflects a minimalist aesthetic that feels more sophisticated than stylish or trendy. With rounded edges and a monitor stand that hovers above the main working space, Loop Desk was named for the various loops that comprise its full-frame. Computer monitors can be placed on Loop Desk’s tallest working tier, while a keyboard and any other working material can be organized on the desktop’s main working area.

The front drawer of the Loop Desk supplies some storage for lighter accessories like staplers and notebooks, while the backside reveals roomy storage pockets that can be used for rolled-up poster blueprints and hiding knots of cable and wires. Loop Desk can accommodate plenty of practical needs, while always maintaining a refined, suave look to tie up the loose ends of any home workspace. Loop Desk’s natural wood finish and clever storage options will feel right at home in any WFH office– whether it’s still in the bedroom or not.

Designer: João Teixeira

With a slim desktop and stacked loop shelves, Loop Deks maintains a small build without compromising working space.

Loop Desk’s main drawer allows space for appliances like wireless keyboards to be stored when not in use.

With such a thin frame, Loop Desk can fit into any working environment.

The slim build of the Loop Desk doesn’t take away from the ample working space made available by the main desktop as well as the top-tier desk.

Smooth, rounded edges give the Loop Desk a neutral, sophisticated finished look to fit into any bedroom or home office.

Sorry Post-it notes, we are moving onto digital sticky notes!

Yes, we all have notes on our phones but has that phased out the use of paper and pen at our work desks? Nope, in fact, most people still prefer to write down their to-do lists because checking it off is gratifying. As a reflex, we always tend to frantically search for a notepad to jot down a number, address, meeting feedback, last-minute lists, or notes during a class. To integrate this existing behavior with the technology we already use, designer Jeong Woo Kim created Ouverture – a conceptual keyboard accessory that is a number pad + a digital notepad when you flip the cover. It has a typing mode which is the number pad and a memo mode which is the writing pad. “The leather cover acts as a number pad on a conventional keyboard. Current from the fingertips passes through the special conductive fiber to the touchpad inside the leather cover,” explains Kim.

A quick survey showed that 98% of people take notes when they are working on computers and 70% of them said it is uncomfortable and 34% complained that their desk tends to get messy or notes tend to get lost. With a device like Ouverture, your notes are saved as image files and your desk remains clutter-free. But it would be interesting if technology also lets you convert it into text for easier transfer of information. Another important point to consider if this goes into production is to make sure it is modular so that the left-handed demographic can also be included – we all deserve to have a chance at being more efficient! Ouverture comes with a magnetic pen on the side so that you don’t need to look for pen or paper anymore – it retains the tactile experience and incorporates it with our digital lifestyle without us having to learn any new behaviors. No more messy desks, paper waste, or lost memos!

Designer: Jeong Woo Kim
