Home Gyms designed to perfectly complement your IKEA furniture + help you become your fittest version!

The pandemic has restrained most of us to our homes, and not that we needed any more excuses to bunk the gym, but now we have a legitimate one – there’s literally a virus on the loose! But ignoring our health and fitness is something we simply cannot afford to do anymore. If there’s one thing that COVID-19 has instilled into us, it’s that health really is wealth. And, as much as I love procrastinating, and putting off any form of exercise for as long as I can, I cannot deny the fact that health must be considered a top priority for us all. And, so what if we cannot go to the gym, we can bring the gym to us! This collection of home gyms will not only motivate you and excite you to workout, but will also ensure you stick to your daily exercise routine. No more skipping leg days!

Oliver Perretta’s Kondition was inspired by a piece of furniture that actually resembles a standard workout bench, IKEA’s BEKANT series. Both IKEA’s BEKANT and Perretta’s Kondition have similar personalities. They appear as modest, simple furniture designs whose true essence shines through in their ability to blend into any given room. At first, an unassuming side bench or low-rise table during living room hours, and then an adjustable home workout with a sliding bench come gym time. Perretta was certain to make bullnose corners for Kondition’s workout station to enhance both the piece’s adaptive nature and its approachability in its inherent baby-proof design. Additionally, Perretta plans to utilize aluminum extrusion in any eventual construction process to ensure a high strength to weight ratio for more intense workouts. Stamped panels also make for easy and deep cleaning so that job won’t ever feel stressful after a good sweat.

Peloton Vibe caters to every sense and muscle from start to finish, it is truly a whole vibe. The bench has a unique multi-position arm that can be moved to work with a variety of exercises. The lower portion stores a set of dumbbells that help expand to a larger range of guided workouts by the Peloton App service. Once you complete your workout, the bench seat and arm surface seamlessly transform into a massage experience. It utilizes built-in massage balls that can rotate and heat up based on your preferences. At-home gym equipment AND at-home spa? I would work out more often simply so I can make the most of the heated massage feature.

The ARENA creates a workout system that can be used across over 300 movement types and in tandem with multiple styles from strength training to cardio, HIIT, athletic training, conditioning, weight-loss, and even recovery. ARENA provides a physical platform for you to work out on, while a motor-controlled high-performance cable passes from within it, giving you the ability to simulate a variety of exercises. The cable is controlled by algorithms within the ARENA that can simulate any force curve as well as dynamically adapt to users’ speed of movement to help you achieve your desired training result (muscle gain, weight-loss…).

A simple web search can lead you to a host of foldable and space-saving exercise bikes but if you do your research, you’ll find there are none that can provide professional quality work out at home and fold up to the size of a carry-on bag when you’re done! This is where the Breakaway Bike steps in with its immensely compact size. Made from aerospace-grade aluminum, the bike measures 16 x 23 x 8-inches when packed down and weighs only 35 pounds. The bike boasts of being the world’s first exercise bike that can be conveniently folded down so you can pick it up and store it away in a closet at home or under a table in the office until it’s time to get pumping! Get a full-sized workout, close up shop in seconds, and hide it away under the bed – it’s all so easy. Interestingly, you can also load the Breakaway Bike in the boot of your car or can fit it in the overhead bin to be carried where your work takes you!

Whilst gym equipment may look right at home in… well, a gym, it does clash with the décor of most domestic settings. Seeing as we certainly don’t need another excuse not to exercise, it’s about time we have a more desirable alternative to all that clunky equipment! The solution is FUORIPISTA, a piece of fitness equipment that is undoubtedly an aesthetically pleasing object while meeting our functional demands. FUORIPISTA’s transparent legs achieve a visually light design so it can sit unobtrusively within the room. These legs have been paired with a wooden body that makes up the frame of the bicycle; with the design being treated in a manner that complements the existing furniture within the room instead of standing out and creating disharmony.

The XBody Actiwave introduces an electrifying new way to enhance your workouts… literally! The all-new tech consists of a wearable suit with sensors and nodes that work in tandem with a personal training system. The system will simultaneously provide instruction, track your fitness, suggest improvements, and give your muscles a boost! It uses electric muscle stimulation (EMS) technology to increase the efficiency of workouts.“Our assignment was to give shape to the new wireless system for Actiwave. The wireless system consists of Actiwear control unit and the Fitbelt holder belt. The main control unit makes it possible to move freely, while the Fitbelt held it fit on you during workout,” designers told YD.

Developed from a collaboration between personal trainers and product designers, AIIR was designed to reduce joint stress and promote healthy posture. Contained within an 8.5″ x 6″ travel case, AIIR Flow is the smaller of the two workout kits and comes with two durable, carbon-steel push-up bars so you can get an arm and chest workout anywhere. The push-up bars come with spring-loaded, folding supports that dislodge from and fold inside both ends of each handle for ultimate portability. The push-up bars pack down to the size of a water bottle and can support up to 300lbs when in use. Designed to provide a full workout in a portable format, the STRAFFR is a resistance-training band that lets you exercise all parts of your body, mimicking the gym workout… but it’s more than just a replacement for the gym’s equipment. The STRAFFR is quite literally a sensor in itself, constantly providing exercise data to you via your phone, giving you the feedback of a personal trainer at home. With just a band and an app, STRAFFR aims at giving you the ability to go through a full workout in the comfort of your home or even a hotel (if you’re traveling). The app comes with a variety of exercises that get optimized based on your performance to create a training plan that’s unique to you, while the band itself is all the equipment you really need. Designed around the idea of resistance training, the elastic band communicates with the app as you stretch it, telling your phone how you’re doing. The band comes with a variety of markings that allow you to customize the intensity of your workout by just narrowing your grip.

Meet the FLiPBENCH by Brazyn Life – a versatile wall-mounted fold-out bench that’s ideal for all kinds of apartments, big and small, and even your studio or your garage. Designed to be compact and aesthetic when closed, the FLiPBENCH sits flat against your wall until you need to exercise. When it’s workout time, the bench opens right out, creating a dedicated workout nook/area within your flat without ruining your home’s decor or eating into your apartment’s floor space… and the best part? You have the option to add a colored back panel that matches your wall, allowing it to blend right into your home’s decor.

Since physical fitness has become integral to our daily routines, the purpose behind Stoyka aims to strike a balance in using living spaces as fitness studios. In finding that harmony, the designers behind Stoyka integrated a storage system into the power rack, which slides out from behind the power rack’s rear wall. These sliding racks carry enough room to store the power rack’s barbells, round weighted plates, as well as rack accessories like support beams and spotter’s arms. Interchangeable by design, the Stoyka seamlessly blends into any home or office space simply by sliding the hidden storage panels behind the power rack’s rear wall. Equipped with the means for strength HIIT training and balance and flexibility exercises, Stoyka comes complete with reinforced racks, hooks, safety stops, crossbars, and removable wall bars.

Peloton gets redesigned for a full body workout & recovery massage with aromatherapy at home!

The pandemic gave a huge boost to at-home workout equipment, especially the Peloton bikes. Peloton Vibe is based on the brand but elevates the at-home biking workout into a more well-rounded full-body experience! It is designed in a way to incorporate traditional weight training and also includes muscle recovery, aromatherapy, and music. Peloton Vibe caters to every sense and muscle from start to finish, it is truly a whole vibe.

The bench has a unique multi-position arm that can be moved to work with a variety of exercises.

Peloton Vibe is focused on a more wholesome experience, it’s recovery features set it apart from all other home workout equipment. “Massage can release muscle tension, prevent injuries, promote faster muscle recovery, improve range of motion and flexibility. People need a massage, not only in need of treatment function, but also sensory enjoyment of environmental atmosphere, in which much equipment currently is lacking. Peloton Vibe has everything for the full experience,” says  Yinyifan Mo.

A space-saving work and workout setup designed to keep your mind & body healthy!

It has been one year of WFH and we all have quickly realized the need for furniture that can serve dual purposes and optimize space when we are working at home/living at work. Especially for the urban demographic that lives in compact apartments, it is a challenge to create a home office and also have space left for exercise equipment – another lifestyle change we have adapted to! This innovative desk design uses wall bars at its core with modular attachments that let you use it as your 9-5 set up and then transform it into beast mode.

“The designer wall bars are one of the most flexible wall bars in Germany. Can be installed anywhere in the room without dowels. Just stretch it between the floor and the rigid ceiling,” says the team on the no-screw assembly which is a huge USP especially if you are renting your home or move frequently. Shapely additions crafted from wood make the aesthetic wall bars a multifunctional fitness device for the whole family. You can customize it per your ceiling and your needs, in fact, the company also sells kid-friendly setups that have slides instead of workout benches! It lets you use a single corner for a home office, homeschooling, home gym, and a kid zone seamlessly without taking up an insane amount of space. On a personal note, I love that the desk height is adjustable given the Lego-style build because I can easily turn my table into a standing desk when needed!

Made in Germany, wall bars offer a particularly wide range of possible variations. In addition to many training options, the combination offers a functional workplace. The desk module is attached in a few seconds, without tools. The height is flexible, so it can be used as a desk or as a high table. After work, the desk module can simply be unhooked and folded in so that it can be stowed behind the wall bars, under the bed, or behind the door. With additions like the slide, the kids can find their movement-compensation on the wall bars even after work. These setups work for the whole family and the wooden finish lets it seamlessly blend with any interior aesthetic.

This boxing platform uses rhythm tech, like Dance Dance Revolution, to make workouts more challenging!

I’ve never enjoyed lifting weights – more dynamic sports like boxing and rowing have been my go-to fitness regimens through the years. But since quarantine ordered us into self-isolation, my workouts have consisted of a lot of running, running, and more running. I know I’m not the only one getting a little bored – I miss pounding sandbags and the trainers who’d scream boxing combos in my face. While I can’t wait for the day that in-person training sessions rev up again, new fitness designs like Liteboxer, a guided boxing platform, offer solutions that make sparring in the ring possible for home workouts.

Liteboxer is the only connected fitness platform currently on the market today that offers full-body boxing workouts equipped with Rhythm Technology and expert training. It’s like Dance Dance Revolution but for your fists. Built and shaped like a traditional treadmill, Liteboxer works once users stand atop the base platform, adjust the punch pad’s height as needed, and connect their personal smartphone or tablet devices to the built-in tablet shelf for engaging expert training. Opting for a more physically digital experience, Liteboxer’s instruction primarily takes place on the punch pad so you won’t spend your workouts looking at yet another screen.

Once users have connected their tablets to Liteboxer, music, also called ‘Punch Tracks,’ can be played so that boxers can punch in time with predetermined songs – this is where the patented Rhythm Technology steps in. Through the use of Rhythm Technology, Liteboxer syncs its software and larger systems with the given beat of a song. As the music plays for users, the punch pad’s force sensors light up with LED runway lights to indicate a given boxing combo. As users punch Liteboxer’s force sensors and work up a sweat, professional trainers offer tips and coaching through the user’s attached smartphone or tablet, which can either be connected to external speakers or Bluetooth.

Liteboxer was first thought of by Todd Dagres after returning home from the boxing ring only to feel slightly less enthused over his stationary sandbag compared to his time spent sparring with his friends. Liteboxer has been regularly compared to the ever-popular Peloton, that smart home-gym system that replaces physical training with a more digital experience, as well as Dance Dance Revolution, that old dancing video game that Lindsay Lohan crushed in 2004. While both seem to be reasonable comparisons, Liteboxer boasts the best from both, making for a first-of-its-kind boxing experience for your home gym.

Architecture-inspired workout equipment that balances your workout and your interior design!

I was not an active person before 2020. If you, like me, never had a desire to work out, didn’t enjoy running, or were in terrible shape? Ironically, this mentality flipped in quarantine. I’m sure many readers have grown stir-crazy this past year and can relate to this newly spurred desire to exercise. We always want what we can’t have. Living in a small space, however, means limited options for workout equipment. Currently, my arsenal includes water bottles filled with sand and a yoga mat. Even if I could safely go to a gym, I hate exercising in front of other people, who are presumably in better shape than I am. These are struggles that many individuals relate to … and they are struggles that the Arch exercise equipment tries to address.

At first glance, the functionality of the Arch is difficult to place. It looks like … well, an arch (with a stool place in front of it). The product is perfect for fitness in a small space, like my living room. Honestly, the structure could blend into the background – which in this case, is a good thing. The Arch uses resistance bands instead of weights, which take up less storage space while still providing an effective, strength-building workout. It’s a great entry-level workout appliance for exercising newbies like myself. Additionally, the Arch also offers dumbles as add-ons for people who want a more intense workout. The Arch also has a companion app. It’s a great educational and motivational tool to help users try out the different exercises available with the Arch structure.

The product is built specifically for workout needs during quarantine; its slender frame takes up limited space, allowing it to fit into almost everyone’s lifestyle – from beginners to pros. The guiding principles behind the Arch reimagine how society views health and fitness. We tend to equate bulging muscles with peak physical fitness, but in reality, those standards are unrealistic and not necessary for the general public – we’re not bodybuilders, after all! The Arch, on the other hand, encourages users, like me, to set their own fitness goals, instead of comparing themselves to the buff, childhood crushes they still follow on Instagram (also me).

This IKEA inspired bench holds a home gym while merging with your living room interiors!

Stuck inside with quarantine, we’ve all had to get creative when it comes to staying healthy, but with working out indoors, it’s hard to not feel distracted by all the clutter from our home gym equipment. Our living rooms get left with little to no walking room because dumbbells get scattered across the floor and yoga mats and resistance bands take over closets and coat-racks. Our homes have turned into micro-networks of all the businesses we had once frequented daily. Oliver Perretta, having had enough of it too, recently designed Kondition, a flexible piece of home fitness furniture, in order to maintain the comfort of our home all while providing a solution for those who want to remain physically active.

Kondition was inspired by a piece of furniture that actually resembles a standard workout bench, IKEA’s BEKANT series. Both IKEA’s BEKANT and Perretta’s Kondition have similar personalities as they appear as modest, simple furniture designs whose true essence shines through in their ability to blend into any given room. At first, an unassuming side bench or low-rise table during living room hours, and then, an adjustable home workout with a sliding bench come gym time. Perretta was certain to make bullnose corners for Kondition’s workout station in order to enhance both the piece’s adaptive nature and its approachability in its inherent baby-proof design. Additionally, Perretta plans to utilize aluminum extrusion in any eventual construction process as that would ensure a high strength to weight ratio for more intense workouts. Stamped panels also make for easy and deep cleaning so that job won’t ever feel stressful after a good sweat.

The pull-out drawer is perhaps Kondition’s defining feature as this solves the problem of home gym equipment taking up too much space. On the planning surrounding Kondition’s drawer feature, Perretta says, “The drawer in this concept utilizes load-bearing rails of 100kg plus and small castors on the underside to make pulling the drawer out easy.” Along with Kondition’s drawer frame, Perretta integrated fixtures all around the bench that will allow users to perform resistance band movements such as rows, bicep curls, tricep extensions, and lateral raises. From the more disguised features such as the fixtures and hooks to the ample storage space given by the drawer, and then to the casual, yet durable upholstery that fits into living rooms and office spaces alike, giving your workouts that plush, extra comfort sometimes needed – Kondition, as Perretta remarks,  is as “adaptable both functionally and aesthetically.”

This 180° foldable workout mat is a space-saving alternative to the traditional treadmill!

Okay if home fitness was a porridge then Goldilocks would absolutely go for this one! The WalkingPad S1 is the perfect middle ground for those looking for something that falls between a yoga mat and a treadmill. This 180-degree foldable smart mat is a home workout essential for those who want to build up their fitness without building a full home gym in their apartments. This way you can avoid risking your health by going to the gym in a pandemic while continuing your summer-less summer body journey!

The biggest advantage of the WalkingPad S1 is that it saves 95% space when folded up and also when compared to a treadmill without compromising on the workout. It has been redesigned to fit more people and more scenarios that come with a flexible life. It is also 20 lbs lighter and takes up to 45% less space than the older model. I love that it has a noise reduction feature so it can be accommodated in different rooms without disturbance. “Equipped with premium materials of the frame and the running belt, we aim to deliver the best workout experience at your home. Wake up to a morning walk at home when it’s raining or burn some calories before going to bed; WalkingPad S1 is your perfect solution to an efficient and effective daily exercise – anytime, anywhere,” says the team.

It comes embedded with a feet sensory technology that allows you to adjust and control your pace automatically based on your personalized training data (eg. HIIT training!). There is a pressure sensor at the bottom of the workout appliance that accurately measures your position change. If you want to increase the speed, simply walk to the front of the pad and it will accelerate intuitively. Once you’ve reached your desired speed, move back to the middle of the pad, and it will maintain the speed for you. To stop just walk towards the back of the pad and the belt will slow down steadily to a halt. By identifying different areas, the rate of speed changes accordingly and reduces the chances of you losing your balance when you have to manually control the speed while exercising. If needed, it comes with a detachable handlebar for those who may need support or are dependent. Safety comes first and the S1 will automatically stop if no movements were detected on the running belt. “The pre-set speed limit intends to avoid any injury due to operational errors making it perfect for senior citizens as well. The anti-slip mat is made out of EVA material and it has less friction coefficient when exercising,” assures the team.

An alternative to traditional treadmills, the WalkingPad S1 adopts a patented foldable design that allows you to literally fold it in half and store it anywhere. It occupies minimal space and can be stored vertically or horizontally, so if you have a small space or office you can still get your steps in without rearranging all your furniture! Another feature that stands out in the WalkingPad S1 when compared to a treadmill is the noise. A treadmill would generate a noise reading at a range of 65 dB on the sound scale which is a significant amount while the WalkingPad S1 minimizes the noise to an average of 45 dB. The embedded power engine increases durability while reducing noise which makes it a better fit for any environment and especially shared spaces. You can control the WalkingPad S1 using the remote control, their own app, or simply by walking. Watch my steps go from 41 to 10,000 because I will be walking while I work, cook, and watch Netflix!
