This minimal hammer takes inspiration from Apple’s aesthetics and twists to become a rod!

The first historical reference of hammer dates back to 3.3 million years ago – a time when hammer stone was used to break-up smaller stones to craft tools. Now in the 21st century, the hammer has got countless versions, but the purpose still stays the same. To pound nails or any other thing into a surface or wooden objects. You would shun the argument for a modern hammer design, and say – after all a hammer is a hammer, what’s the big deal?

The I-Hammer by industrial designer ZJ-DDG has a “hammering” statement courtesy of its clever design which makes it more than any other handyman’s tool. First, the looks are all tailored for a modern world setup – modern home interiors to be precise. The use of white and metal cutting highlights the fact. Secondly, the unique functionality of hiding away the hammer end of the luxurious product all goes well with the urban crowd. After all, compactness supporting portability is the name of the game.

The unique steering mechanism of the I-Hammer transforms it from a hammer to a stick with the push of a button. The instant benefit – it is easier to carry and store. The beauty of it lies in the simple form factor which serves the purpose while being aesthetically attractive enough to carry in your backpack or even brag around with your friends while on a camping trip. Who says hammers can’t be pretty to look at while being highly functional. I-Hammer proves them all wrong!

A portable DVD player+display designed to make binge watching easy for the elderly

The digital age was already booming but ever since the pandemic hit, it has reached a whole new level. Now everything has to be done digitally – working, ordering groceries, attending weddings, and even your doctor’s appointments. While most of us are well-versed with using apps for everything, we often forget about the elderly who don’t consider their smartphones as an extension of their body. This is a difficult time for them since they are more at risk but doubly difficult because gadgets are not their best friends. Keeping this in mind, Designer Chen Zhigang (ZJ-DDG) created DVDISC which is a conceptual device aimed at letting folks binge watch without Netflix!

DVDISC is for many of us who still have their old DVD/CD collection but mainly for those who just want to watch a movie without operating a laptop or an app they are not comfortable with. The goal of this design is to make using the device a super simple task, so the UI and UX revolve around that. It has simple physical buttons that are shallow dips in the physical surface and are all labeled which makes it very easy to operate. It literally tells you where to put the DVD or CD and if you need to ‘click’ or ‘press’ a certain button and exactly what it will do. Another important thing was to include a cost-effective display that doesn’t reduce the quality of the image. All you have to do is insert the DVD or CD in the slot and flip it over to watch on the screen. It truly makes watching content easier for the elderly or even those who may experience forms of mental disabilities. After all, everyone deserves a good binge-watching session in quarantine! I would call this a smart design instead of a smart device.

This futuristic smart diving mask will revolutionize the existing underwater experience!

These sure aren’t your great grandaddy’s swimming goggles! This ultramodern twist on underwater specs, called D-Mask, addresses many of the issues divers currently encounter. Secured around the forehead, jaw, and chin, the design may cover the full face, but the result feels less restrictive than traditional goggles.

While it’s usable on its own, by simply connecting the unit to an air tank, users can breathe easily and more naturally without the need for a sealed mouthpiece. It’s also equipped with an innovative bone-conduction radio system that makes it possible to enjoy tunes or communicate with other divers conversationally – something that was impossible and limited to basic sign language before. Other cool features include built-in LED headlamps, and a head-up projected display that indicates water conditions, depth, pressure and weather all on the front shield.

Microwave redesigned to be rounder and hold condiments

It’s been a while that someone has made the effort to redesign the microwave from the ground up. So far it’s only about adding features and technology. The Hybrid & Wide-Oven gives a whole new form for the oven – round! It also hosts four little pots to hold condiments and seasonings that you could use in the dish that you are cooking in the oven.

The purpose of the round design, is so that you can remove your dish with more ease and not burn your hands. I can live with that insight – and to be honest, most homes can do with the new form. My only worry is the stowing of ingredients on top of the oven. Typically you want to keep this space empty and for ventilation, but you never know … this concept could spark a debate or new thinking.

A Helping Handle for Subways

subway_escape_lighting_01

Having not grown up in a city with a subway system, I still have a pseudo-irrational fear of getting trapped in one (it does happen!). If we had something like the Subway Escape Lighting Armrest concept, I might be able to relax and enjoy the ride a little more.

The design transforms an ordinary loop handle into a multifunctional tool that can be used to aid in escaping the subway in the event of something as serious as a crash or as simple as a train stall. It features a quick-release system that automatically deploys in a crash or can be triggered by the passenger. A powerfully integrated lamp serves as a flashlight to be used in the dark tunnels or to see around the car while awaiting assistance. In the event of an emergency in which riders are trapped, it can also be used to smash a window safely in order to escape.
