PS5 Customized Into Miniature Dwarven Kingdom

The Playstation 5 console has a certain design aesthetic to it. One that doesn’t really match the rest of my interior design motif. Now, a dwarven kingdom-themed PS5? That will fit right into my rumpus room! Customized by Martina of YouTube channel Nerdforge, this PS5 console features a miniature diorama of a dwarven kingdom/forge, complete with lava and light effects. My own PS5 has never looked so lackluster.

If you look closely, you can see the Sony logo and lips of the PS5 at the top, with the lava flow passing between them. It’s a thing of beauty, isn’t it? Martina says she had to experiment with making silicone molds for the lava flow, then making a resin cast of it, but she’s pleased with the result. Probably because it looks so good.

Will I be trying something similar? Of course not, I recognize the limit of my own capabilities, and they’re certainly far from being able to produce something of this caliber or anywhere close. No, the closest I’m going to come to customizing my PS5 is scratching the 5 into a 6, then trying to sell it on eBay for a million dollars.

Voltron Castle of Lions PC Case Mod: Activate Interlock!

There are good ideas, and then there are great ideas. And modder Robdp82 building a gaming PC (mostly emulation with some light e-gaming) into a 1984 Voltron Castle of Lions playset transcends even a great idea, and we can only hope when aliens finally visit earth this is the first thing they see so they don’t just immediately death-ray us all.

Photos by Robd82

The computer is powered on by opening the jaws of the Black Lion emerging from the front of the castle to access the power button. The entire PC is built into the middle of the castle, with a wing that opens on each side. The wing on the left opens to expose the Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red Lion M.2 SSD cards and Yeston RX550 GPU, and the right side opens to reveal the Gigabyte H370N motherboard (with onboard Black Lion M.2 SDD) and two Corsair Dominator 8GB RAM sticks. The Dominator RAM was chosen specifically “for the ability to individually address the lights for the colors of Voltron (RGBY) and went with pink for the 5th color to represent Princess Allura.” Now that’s dedication to a build!

What a glorious computer. And to think I still use the same Dell Dimension desktop I got in college back in 2006. Granted I only use it as a footrest, but still. The wired mouse also makes a great doorstop. Reduce, reuse, recycle – that’s my motto. Captain Planet even sent me an ‘Honorary Planeteer’ sticker last Earth Day.

The Ultimate Case Mod: Coffee Maker PC

Screen Shot 2013-10-01 at 3.30.46 PM

The coder’s best friend is now Red Bull. Or maybe Mountain Dew. Or is that the gamer’s best friend? We’re having trouble keeping track of the caffeinated ‘boisson du jour’, but we’re fairly certain that coffee was popular at some point. In fact, we believe it still is so we’re wondering why it took so long for someone to make a Coffee Maker PC Case. Drugnor, a user on TheZooMod (a forum for discussing and displaying DIY projects) did just that and at the link below you can read all about how it was done. Some electric board wiring, a bit of paint, some soldering and next thing you know, this fella doesn’t even need to get up to brew a fresh batch. And no, it’s not for sale, though we hope you understand that half the fun is in making the thing, not so much in using it. So go ahead, hit the link and find out how to make your own. Let’s hope you don’t burn the house down in the process.

This Steampunk Nintendo Case Mod Reminds Us That We Don’t Have Nice Things

That’s a sweet looking NES case mod, ain’t it? Well, you can’t have it. It was lovingly hand-made by redditor Andrew5785 for his cousin. It’s a one of a kind, and no one at OhGizmo knows anyone crafty enough to make a replica. Should I try, the likelihood of severing a digit is a non-negligible figure. But we can all look at pictures and wonder what it’s like to have an uncle that makes stuff like this.

These pictures, by the way, are after the break.

Atari 2600s get PC innards, 22,857 times more processing power

Atari 2600s get PC innards, 22,857 times more processing power

Atari games redesigned in HTML 5 may bring back a flood of nostalgia, but they leave out a key part of the gaming experience: the classic hardware. Hard Drives Northwest filled that void by gutting a limited number of authentic Atari 2600s and stuffing them with modern PC components. Packing a Core i7 3.4GHz processor, the retro console now boasts 22,857 times more processing power than it did in its heyday, according to Microsoft's calculations -- more than enough oomph to handle the recent remakes. Other internals include 8GB of RAM, a 120GB SSD and a Radeon HD 6570 graphics card with 1GB of video memory. With support for USB 3.0 and 2.0, eSATA, DisplayPort, DVI and HDMI, the system is well stocked on the connectivity front. Finally, the signature of Atari founder Nolan Bushnell acts as the cherry atop the faux wood grain-toting package. While the souped-up machines aren't up for sale, a pair of them are slated for a giveaway. Glamour shots and the full set of specs await you at the source.
