Volkswagen Created a Motorized Office Chair with Car Features

Inspired by the features found in its line of vans, Volkswagen Norway created a motorized office chair with all sorts of bells and whistles. The chair’s features include LED headlights, a seatbelt, a seat warmer, a horn, a tow hitch – even an entertainment system. So basically, an office chair that’s even nicer than my car.

The foot-pedal-operated chair has a range of about 7.5-miles and a top speed of just over 12 MPH. It also has a backup camera and proximity sensors and a touchscreen entertainment center with integrated speakers. For reference, my car has a boombox sitting in the passenger seat operated by eight D batteries.

Unfortunately for business executives with corner offices and private bathrooms, the chair isn’t actually going to be sold but was made as a marketing piece to highlight VW’s van features. Which, from what I could gather, aren’t that different than other manufacturers’ van features. Those companies didn’t put them all in an office chair, though, which is why I’m only buying VW from now on. When’s the new microbus coming out anyways?

Motorized T-Rex Pool Float: Jurassic Pool

Summer is officially here, and you know what that means – hoping somebody invites me to a pool party. And to spice things up in the pool this summer is this motorized t-rex pool float (affiliate link) from PoolCandy. The inflatable dinosaur features a 3-blade propeller powered by a 66-watt motor and six D batteries that allow you to cruise in any direction you want to. I don’t know about you, but I’ll be steering towards the swim-up bar!

As far as capturing the likeness of a t-rex goes, they didn’t do a fantastic job. It’s still terrifying, though, just not in the way I’d expect a t-rex to be. It’s more of a ‘Good lord, what happened to you?!’ kind of way.

Don’t have the money to spend on a fancy motorized t-rex pool float? No worries, that’s what pool noodles were made for. They’re not that fun, but they are cost-effective. That’s what my parents got me when I was a kid, and we didn’t even have a pool, just a bathtub.

LEGO Ideas Motorized Johnny 5 Is Alive!

Short Circuit is one of those classic movies that every self-respecting geek should see at some point in their lives. After all, the star of the show is Number 5, aka Johnny 5, a charming and inquisitive robot who craves input and understanding from the human world. It’s kind of like the pre-cursor to CHAPPiE, with its main character being a killer military robot who ends up finding its human side. If you love Johnny 5 too, you’ll want to vote for this fan-submitted LEGO design based on the movie robot.

This LEGO Johnny 5 model was designed by RJ BrickBuilds and features a motorized drivetrain using LEGO Powered Up motors. In addition, Johnny’s body, arms, head, and laser module can all be controlled using the Powered Up app. You can also pose his eyebrows, though you’ll need to do that manually. Just don’t ever try to disassemble him!

The model consists of 2,711 pieces, measures an impressive 23.2″ tall, and tips the scales at 6.24 pounds. You can show your support for the LEGO Johnny 5 kit by voting on the LEGO Ideas website. Hopefully, he’ll get enough votes to be considered for production by the LEGO powers-that-be.

This Motorized Handheld Dish Scrubber Makes Doing Dishes Easy

Maybe you live in a small apartment without a dishwasher, live alone, or have a roommate and you are both lazy. Doing the dishes is not a fun chore. Well, check this out. This handheld motorized scrubbing brush does all work for you, keeping your hands away from that nasty sink water. This gadget will be your new hero.

It kind of looks like an alligator with two long front arms. Those arms are retractable and articulated so they can securely hold onto your plates, bowls, and cups, while a motor drive rotates your dishes through the bristles, scraping off food and grime. Since it has brushes on both sides, it cleans the entire dish and there’s an additional pair of rotating brushes for cleaning utensils and cutlery.

The gadget is waterproof and powered by a rechargeable battery that will give you about an hour of runtime, which should be enough to work your way through that huge pile of dishes with the flies circling about. This is great if you hate getting your hands all dirty when doing the dishes. It might make dishwashing super fast for you. Especially if you have a lot of dirty dishes.

It’ll cost you about $80 from Thanko – which isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s way less expensive than a diswasher or a housekeeper.

Own This Awesome Light-up Helmet Replica Based on Jamiroquai “Automaton” Video

For the longest time, the coolest headgear out of the world of music had to be Daft Punk’s iconic helmets, and Deadmau5’s light up mouse head. But earlier this year, Jay Kay of Jamiroquai donned a fantastic helmet not just loaded up with colorful LEDs, but motorized pieces which could change form.

Now, the guys over at 10KLumen are showing off an amazing replica build of the helmet, which looks exactly like the one in the Automaton music video. It lights up, changes colors, and even has servos to move the bits of spiky, translucent plastic “hair” into different positions. I especially dig the illuminated “eyebrows.” Check it out in action in the video below:

Here’s the original music video for comparison:

It looks pretty darned close to the one in the music video. People are really going to be amazed if you turn up at dance party or a Halloween costume party wearing this thing.

Best of all, you can buy one of these amazing helmet replicas for yourself for $450(USD), which I don’t think is all that expensive given all of the work that must have gone into engineering this thing.

Motorized LEGO Game of Thrones Red Keep Sculpture

I didn’t like Game of Thrones at first, but the show has certainly grown on me and I like it now. It’s one of the few shows that I still like to watch the opening scenes of just to see the moving fortresses and such. The most memorable is the Red Keep.

Some fantastic geek has taken a bunch of LEGO bricks and built their own working version of the Red Keep from the opening titles of the hit HBO show. It rotates, its towers slide up and down, its cupolas spin, and it’s generally packed with awesome. Check it out in action:

The builder of this LEGO sculpture is Claus-Marc Hahn, who created it with LEGO and Mindstorms automation gear. There are over 125,000 pieces in the creation, along with four Mindstorms EV3 controllers and large servos working the show. Epic build, Claus-Marc!

Square Off Automated Chess Board Moves Pieces from Across the Planet

The next evolution of chess is here. Square Off is a smart, connected, and digital chess board set that moves pieces across the board automatically. Now this isn’t the first time there’s been a chess set with automated pieces, but this one can be controlled by a remote player.

square_off_1

Play against anyone in the world (or the AI) and their pieces will move on the board as if you are playing against a ghost. The pieces move smoothly and don’t crash into one another. Right now the available playing modes are Square Off, Training, and Live streaming. The board is controlled via an iOS or Android smartphone app which communicates which pieces to move via Bluetoot.

You can also change the game by changing the top of the board if you want to play checkers for instance. Square Off is raising funds on Kickstarter now. A pledge of €199 (~$223 USD) or more will get you in on the action, with the first boards expected to ship as early as April 2017.
