Samyang has introduced a revolutionary prime lens designed to lighten the load for photographers by allowing them to change focal lengths without swapping out the entire lens. The Remaster Slim autofocus lens, just 0.8 inches thick, features a unique design where photographers can switch the optical elements inside the lens rather than carrying multiple lenses. This innovation maintains the benefits of prime lenses—sharper images and a shallower depth of field—without the usual drawbacks of weight and cost.
The optical elements in the Remaster Slim are housed in smaller magnetic mounts that can be easily swapped in and out, offering flexibility without the bulk. Initially, Samyang is offering three inserts: a 21mm f/2.8 for wider shots, a 28mm f/3.5, and a 32mm f/3.5 ideal for portrait photography. These inserts take up significantly less space in a camera bag compared to three full-sized lenses, though this convenience comes with some trade-offs.

Samyang describes the Remaster Slim as delivering an “analog sensibility” reminiscent of classic point-and-shoot film cameras, suggesting it might produce slightly softer images compared to modern prime lenses with faster apertures like f/1.4. While this may appeal to photographers seeking a more nostalgic aesthetic, it’s a consideration for those prioritizing image sharpness.
The Remaster Slim is currently only compatible with Sony’s E-mount system and was available for pre-order in South Korea at approximately $229. Although the initial pre-orders quickly sold out, Samyang plans to begin shipping in early September, with broader availability expected in South Korea by early October. Global availability details have yet to be announced.
