Amazon discounts the Apple 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro below its Prime Day price

If you're eager to get your hands on a MacBook Pro but want to save some cash, Amazon has a good deal right now on the 14-inch MacBook Pro M3. That laptop is down to $1,300 for the model with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, which represents a $300 discount (a steeper sale than what we saw during Amazon Prime Day in July). The typical price for this version is $1,500, so you're saving a good chunk of change. Keep in mind, though, that October Prime Day is likely right around the corner — Amazon announced it would return this year, although no specific dates yet. There's a chance we could see a deeper discount during that sale event, but there's no guarantee.

This is the latest MacBook pro with an M3 chip that was released last year. It comes with a 14-inch display, an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU. We loved this laptop in our official review, calling the design a “major improvement” over previous MacBook Pro releases and praising the “gorgeous” Liquid Retina XDR display, the abundant selection of ports and that speedy M3 processor.

This machine also made our list of the best MacBooks, and for good reason. We called it “the best MacBook for creatives” due to the incredibly efficient and powerful CPU. Apple silicon ain’t no joke. The battery life is on point, lasting around 24 hours per charge. That’s about three full work days.

There’s one caveat here. This is the model with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. The storage is fine, as there are plenty of ports for external drives and an SD card slot. If you are going with a MacBook Pro over an Air, however, it might be a good idea to spring for a model with 16GB of RAM to get the most out of the machine. Luckily, the 1TB/16GB version is also on sale via Amazon for $1,700.

October Prime Day 2024 is around the corner, serving as Amazon’s (un)official kickoff to the holiday shopping season. If you’re eager to snag some early holiday deals for those on your list (or yourself), here’s what we know so far about the next Prime Day shopping event.

When is October Prime Day 2024?

Amazon has not announced the dates of fall Prime Day 2024 yet, but we do know it will be returning sometime in October.

What is October Prime Day?

October Prime Day is an extension of the regular Prime Day sale held annually in July. It features exclusive deals on Amazon for Prime members, although not quite on as big of a scale as the main summer Prime Day.

How long is October Prime Day?

In years past, October Prime Day has been two days long, just like Prime Day in July.

Glorious Gaming’s GMMK 3 is a flagship keyboard with tons of premium features

Glorious Gaming just released its latest flagship keyboard, the GMMK 3. The company didn’t skimp on the bells and whistles with this one. As a matter of fact, it’s calling the GMMK 3 the “world’s most customizable keyboard.”

To that end, the keyboard offers nine points of modularity, from the keycaps to the switch plates, cables, accent pieces and, well, “every aesthetic part of the keyboard, from top and bottom.” Glorious Gaming says there are so many ways to customize this model, that it’s actually “over one billion keyboards in one.”

Gaming keyboards, however, are about way more than aesthetics. Fortunately, the GMMK 3 checks all of the boxes for premium keyboard features. There are Hall Effect sensors, support for a rapid trigger feature and up to an 8,000 Hz polling rate. There’s also customizable actuation and 4:1 dynamic keystroke mapping. There’s even a modular gasket system to adjust the precise sound and feel of keystrokes.

Some of the customization comes into play during the ordering process. The online configurator lets you select the color scheme and make other adjustments. There are also a bunch of accessories available, including key capsules, badges, rotary knobs and more. Additionally, each keyboard is available in three sizes.

A keyboard.

Beyond sizing, the keyboards are split into three different versions. There’s the standard GMMK 3, which includes everything mentioned above, but the max polling rate shoots down to 1,000 Hz. The GMMK 3 Pro ships with a durable full aluminum body, but keeps that max polling rate of 1,000 Hz. The baddest of the bunch, the GMMK 3 Pro HE, includes the advertised 8,000 Hz polling rate, along with a revamped RGB lighting system and other goodies.

Finally, there are “barebones” versions of each keyboard that don’t include switches or keycaps, so you can hit the ground running when it comes to customization. All of the keyboards come with tools to help remove switches and keycaps, but it’s nice to have that part of the job finished already.

The GMMK 3 is available now in all of its many configurations. Prices range from $120 to $260.

Apple’s Voice Memos app is getting simple multitrack recording

Apple just announced a forthcoming update at today’s iPhone event: multitrack recording inVoice Memos.

The demo showed a guitar player laying down a progression and then simply singing on top of it. It looks like the magic stops at two tracks, but there’s a simple editing interface that lets allows for adjustments to each layer.

There’s also some algorithmic and machine learning mojo happening under the hood, as the demo doesn’t show the user wearing headphones when singing on top of the guitar track. In the old days, doing overdubs without headphones would be a one-way ticket to a ruined recording.

Apple didn’t announce when this feature is coming or what iPhone models it would be available for. The recently-announced iPhone lineup features a new microphone array, which could enable this feature. We’ll update this post when we know more.

AirPods 4 have a new design and an ANC upgrade option

Apple’s annual iPhone event sure brought the fire on the handset side of things, but the company also announced two new AirPod models to join the ever-growing lineup. There's the standard AirPods 4 and a slightly more high-tech AirPods 4 with ANC.

The biggest news is perhaps the addition of USB-C to the charging cases. This finally brings the AirPods in line with the rest of the world and, most importantly, newer iPhone and iPad releases. The AirPods 4 earbuds should also fit better, thanks to some design refinements.

Both versions of the earbuds also include the H2 chip, allowing for an improvement in sound quality. There's even personalized spatial audio, voice isolation and gesture-based Siri controls. You can nod your head, for instance, to make certain adjustments. All told, these buds should get 30 hours of battery life.

Some specs.
Apple

AirPods 4 with ANC may look identical to the standard model, but there’s an advanced feature set. This includes active noise cancellation, which isn't always a given with earbuds, and wireless charging. Both models are available to preorder right now, with shipments going out on September 20. The fourth-gen AirPods cost $129 and the AirPods 4 with ANC costs $179.

The company also announced a refresh of the AirPods Max over-ear headphones, after four long years of waiting. The latest model boasts USB-C charging (yay) and comes in new colors, like black, blue, purple and orange. The company did not announce a refresh of the AirPods Pro earbuds, and its long overdue.

Apple’s black Magic Mouse drops to $85 in a rare deal

The black version of Apple’s latest Magic Mouse accessory is just $85 via Amazon, which is a discount of $15. This is nearly a record low price, as this colorway rarely goes on sale.

This is a wireless Bluetooth mouse specifically made for Apple products like Mac desktops and iPads. If you’ve ever owned an iMac or even a Mac tower, you know the drill. It’s a good mouse. It pairs quickly and gets the job done. No muss and no fuss.

There’s a multi-touch surface that allows for gestural controls like swiping and scrolling, which is pretty cool. The mouse also boasts an optimized foot design for better gliding across surfaces. This isn’t one of those older models powered by AA batteries. There’s an internal battery pack that lasts around a month before requiring a trip to the USB-C port for a charge. To that end, it ships with a fairly high-end woven USB-C cable.

That leads me to the one major caveat with Apple’s Magic Mouse. Though the mouse doesn’t have to charge often, this process is kind of annoying. The port is on the underside of the accessory, so you can’t use it while charging. It just turns into a useless, upside-down brick. Maybe whoever finalized the port placement was a nepotism hire.

As for requirements, you need a Bluetooth-enabled Mac with OS X 10.11 or later or an iPad with iPadOS 13.4 or later. For those who don’t care about colorways, the original white model is not on sale, but it is cheaper at just $68.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is cheaper now than it was during Amazon Prime Day

Apple did not announce the Apple Watch Ultra 3 during its iPhone launch event, but right now, you can save big on the Apple Watch Ultra 2. The company's high-end, performance smartwatch is down to $689 at Amazon right now, much cheaper than what it was during Amazon Prime Day in July. That represents a savings of $110, which is one of the best discounts we've seen. Keep in mind that October Prime Day will be returning this year (although specific dates haven't been announced yet), so there's a chance this smartwatch could go on sale again in a few weeks' time.

This high-end watch is geared toward serious athletes and others with specialized fitness-tracking needs, so the sensors are on point and the exterior is incredibly durable. It still features the same 49-millimeter form factor as the original, so it's not too chonky. The screen is much brighter than the OG Ultra, up to 3,000 nits. This should make it easier to read in low light conditions, which is another boon for extreme athletes who do early morning training sessions.

As for power, the smartwatch includes Apple’s new S9 chip, which allows for the aforementioned Double Tap gestural controls and upgraded Siri functionality. The battery can last up to 72 hours on a single charge, so long as it’s in low power mode. Otherwise, it’ll brick out after around 36 hours.

This is a whole lot of smartwatch. Not only is it double the price of the Apple Watch 9, but it's chock full of features that most people don’t need. This is a machine for serious fitness enthusiasts or those who go off the grid for long periods of time. With that being said, today’s sale makes this thing pretty darn attractive for the rest of us.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 drops below its Prime Day price

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is cheaper than we’ve ever seen it before, dropping well below the Prime Day price. The company’s premium smartwatch is available via Amazon for $689, which is a savings of $110.

This is Apple’s latest and greatest (for now) ultra-premium smartwatch. It boasts the company’s Double Tap feature, which lets users pinch quickly in mid-air to bring up the home screen and make adjustments.

The high-end watch is geared toward serious athletes and others with specialized fitness-tracking needs, so the sensors are on point and the exterior is incredibly durable. This Anker 5K power bank for iPhones is cheaper than ever

Modern life dictates that the longer you have a smartphone, the crappier the battery gets. That’s where power banks come in. One of Anker’s leading 5K models for iPhones has dropped to its lowest price ever. The power bank is just $18, down from $26.

This is a well-regarded product. As a matter of fact, a variant of this model made our list of the best power banks. It’s portable and doesn’t even beef up the iPhone too much when attached. It offers 12W fast charging and provides 20 hours of additional smartphone use. That’s a whole lot of doomscrolling, or even joyscrolling.

It folds up and can easily fit into a pocket or bag when not in use. The power bank also includes the company’s ActiveShield safety system that continuously monitors the temperature to avoid overheating.

While advertised as being for iPhones, the power bank is also great for iPads and even some retro iPods. That leads us to the main downside of this device. It uses a Lightning connector, so it won’t work with newer iPhones or iPads with USB-C ports. However, iPhones had a Lighting connector all the way up to the iPhone 14. Statistically, you’re probably reading this on one of those iPhones right now. If that’s true, this is a great power bank for the money.

Apple’s Find My finally comes to South Korea in 2025

Apple is finally bringing its Find My feature to South Korea in 2025. The company says the service will launch at some point during the spring, according to a translation of a press release published by AppleInsider.

For years, South Korea has been just about the only country without access to Apple’s tracking network. So what changed? It looks like one reason behind the move is an influx of user complaints. These complaints have merit, as Apple sells AirTags in the country. Without the Find My network, AirTags are basically useless little silver pucks.

Apple has not addressed the reason behind the sudden change of heart. According to the user petition, the company has kept the feature disabled due to "internal policy." The country has strict privacy regulations, so that could be what led to the aforementioned internal policy. In the past, Apple has said that Find My was absent from South Korea because the company was unable to export high-precision map data due to local laws, as reported by MacRumors.

To that end, South Korea is particularly protective of geographic data. Associated legal restrictions have long been a thorn in the side of international platforms like Google Maps and Apple Maps, as real time mapping data is tough to come by. This has also impacted games that rely on mapping data, like Pokémon Go.

However, Find My already works in the country’s outlying territories like Baengnyeongdo and Ulleungdo, so who knows exactly why it’s taking so long for Find My to reach the mainland. In any event, this is good news for South Koreans who want to keep an eye on their precious belongings. Here’s hoping the platform works as intended.
