If these leaked images are any indication, the upcoming Pixel 9a might see a major design update… but there’s probably a good reason why.

The recent leak of the Google Pixel 9a suggests a fresh approach to design in Google’s mid-range offering, one that may mark a departure from the aesthetic norms established by previous Pixel devices. The leaked renders, shared by @VNchocoTaco on X, reveal a design that forgoes the familiar visor-like camera bar seen on its predecessors. Instead, the Pixel 9a opts for a sleek, minimalistic camera island. This module, positioned on a flat back panel, introduces subtle design refinements that indicate a clear intention by Google to redefine the visual identity of its A-series line. Why, you ask? I can think of a few potential reasons.

Like I mentioned earlier, the Pixel A-series has a reputation for being a little too popular. Even though it’s touted as a budget phone, most YouTubers and reviewers claim that it’s just as good as its flagship counterpart, if not better. It looks just like the flagship, with a very similar design, and an equally good camera. The A-series only gets a few minor downgrades in the form of screen quality, processor speed, lack of wireless charging, larger bezels, and notably a lower price… all of which are fairly acceptable trade-offs. As a result, most budget phone lovers prefer the A-Series phones OVER the flagships, leading to more sales while Google tries to push the more expensive models instead by providing offers/discounts, etc. This dramatic redesign is probably Google’s way of making sure the Pixel 9a doesn’t steal the 9 and 9 Pro’s thunder. If Google’s last keynote was any indication, the company is making a HARD pivot to Gemini, and the Pixel 9a will probably get the same Tensor G4 chip to support those Gemini features (otherwise nobody will buy the phone). By cutting back on the design but still providing remarkable AI functionality (along with camera chops), the Google team seems to be future-proofing their flagship phone while still making the A-series fairly lucrative. It’s a nice strategy, although the Pixel 9a images (if they’re real) show a phone that lacks any character.

The images show a phone with flat sides that curve gently at the edges, just like the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro Fold. This shift creates a more ergonomic experience, addressing one of the criticisms directed at the earlier A-series models, which were sometimes described as cumbersome in hand. Despite this redesign, the bezel size remains largely unchanged compared to the Pixel 8a. For some, this may be a missed opportunity for a more streamlined display experience, especially when considering the bezel trends across mid-range competitors. Nevertheless, these design choices suggest that Google is focused on maintaining the practicality and accessibility that the A-series has become known for, rather than chasing industry trends.

Though the images’ authenticity remains unverified, the source claims that the leak originates from a Compal employee. Compal, a well-known manufacturing partner for Google, has been involved in producing various Pixel devices. It’s also rumored that the Pixel 9a will drop at the end of this year (rather than 2025) and will be available in 4 colors. If this information holds true, it adds credibility to the likelihood that these design changes are indeed intended for the upcoming Pixel 9a. Such a move to alter the design language signals that Google is perhaps aiming to establish a different identity for its A-series, distancing it from the flagship models while still retaining core features that are essential for a consistent user experience across the lineup.

This year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance promises a week filled with elegance, engineering marvels, and a rich history of motoring. The festivities begin with the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion from August 14 to 17, where over 400 meticulously restored cars will take to the iconic WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. This event, celebrating its 50th anniversary, is a reunion of racing legends and the machines that drove them to victory. Established in 1974, it started with just 66 entries, and now, each vehicle receives a coveted acceptance letter affirming its prestigious heritage.

BMW Motorrad x Vagabund electric bike has integrated umbrella and Teenage Engineering speaker

BMW Motorrad Austria has joined forces with design studio VAGABUND to create a custom CE 02 eParkourer ride. The electric bike has a futuristic vibe and retro flair that’ll appeal to Gen-Z and millennials too.

Unlike other electric scooters, this one-off ride gives a sneak peek of where the future of two-wheelers is headed. That’s because it has an integrated BT speaker, hidden umbrella and a strapped skateboard grip tape for all your city riding needs.

The urban commuter will spark interest in electric bikes that can otherwise have the style and feature-rich element missing. It has a two-tone look which goes perfectly with the needs of the modern crowd. Coming on to the BMW CE 02 bike, it tops at a speed of 59 mph and we expect this special version to have the same 48-volt electric motor and drivetrain. It churns out a peak output of 11 kW and offers a range of 55 miles on a single charge. This bike differs in visual appeal as it has a bit more spark with the contrasted white accents. This white influence is carried onto the half-white wheels.

What makes this electric scooter distinct is the integrated OB-4 Magic Radio by Teenage Engineering and a running board with skateboard grip tape. That cool exhaust that you see is for aesthetics, as well as storing a foldable umbrella for the untimely downpour. All these added elements resonate well with the retro-futuristic vibe of the EV. Mixed with the white and black tones is the lively tan of the saddle.

BMW Motorrad has not detailed a lot about the CE 02 x Vagabund edition, however, it is ultra-exclusive simply because of the $549 TE speaker that has a minimalistic theme.

The Audi A6 e-tron combines advanced technology with striking aesthetics. Both the exterior and interior reflect Audi’s dedication to precision and innovation. From the moment you see the A6 e-tron, its clean, sophisticated lines are evident. The design integrates functionality with a bold visual presence. The digital stage concept features a panoramic display, blending a 14.5-inch MMI touch display with an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit. An optional 10.9-inch MMI front passenger display offers Active Privacy Mode, allowing passengers to enjoy entertainment without distracting the driver. The second-generation augmented reality head-up display provides relevant information directly in the driver’s line of sight.

Comfort and functionality take center stage in the interior design. The “soft wrap” extends door to door, creating a cohesive and enveloping space. High-quality materials cover every surface, differentiating between comfort-oriented and precisely designed control areas. The low-lying, slim air vents blend into the background, emphasizing the interior’s clean lines. Displays for the virtual exterior mirrors are ergonomically positioned inside the doors for easy viewing.

The Audi A6 e-tron seamlessly integrates modern technology. The infotainment system, powered by Android Automotive OS, updates over the air to keep the latest Audi Connect services up-to-date. The Audi Application Store offers a variety of third-party apps, while the enhanced e-tron route planner ensures efficient travel. The Audi assistant, integrated with ChatGPT, provides intuitive voice control for various vehicle functions, enhancing the overall driving experience.

With its curved design and OLED technology, the MMI panoramic display consists of an 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit and a 14.5-inch MMI touch display. This digital stage is complemented by the optional 10.9-inch MMI front passenger display, which features Active Privacy Mode. Thanks to intelligent light direction control based on speed and seat occupancy, the front-seat passenger can enjoy entertainment content without distracting the driver.

The interior design emphasizes a homely ambiance with clear structures and spaciousness.
