PinSwitch Turns Your Nintendo Switch into a Tiny Pinball Machine

One of the many things that’s cool about the Nintendo Switch is how people are coming up with creative ways to dock the handheld. Most of the docks I’ve seen keep the screen hidden. In this case, the dock turns the Switch into a tiny pinball machine instead.

Created by Sakura RetroModding, the PinSwitch is a miniature replica of a pinball machine, where the screen of your Switch becomes the playfield.  It works in concert with the Zen Pinball game Pinball FX3, and has real arcade style flipper buttons, a launcher button, and a mini joystick for nudging. The tiny cabinet is made using 3D printed PLA, and covered with colorful decals with fun Nintendo art on them. It connects via the Switch’s USB-C port for zero-latency control, and holds the bezel in front of the handheld with mini neodymium magnets.

Check it out in action, and see how to set up the PinSwitch in the videos below.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear to provide a passthrough charging port, so you’ll be running entirely on battery power, but otherwise this looks like a really nifty accessory for pinball fans. If you’re interested, you can pre-order yours on Etsy for about $222. If you don’t want to spend that much, they’re also making a version without the backbox section and graphics for about $116. They’re expected to start shipping around the end of the month.

‘Stranger Things’ pinball machine melds two forms of ’80s nostalgia

Dubble Bubble Pinball Machine Gum Dispenser

It’s the little pinball machine that rewards you with bubble gum! The Dubble Bubble Pinball Machine Gum Dispenser features flashing lights and pinball arcade sounds for a realistic pinball experience (except smaller, and with candy, and at your house instead of a strip mall in suburbia). Kids of all ages will love getting their gumball reward. All you need to do is hit the pink bumper and a gumball is released from the big chamber on top, through the machine, into your hand and then into your hangry pie hole.

It doesn’t use gumballs on the playing surface but a stainless steel silver ball. Stand like a statue, hit the bumpers, keep the ball in play, keep your wrists supple, play by sense of smell, get those crazy flipper fingers ready so you too can be a gumball wizard. Includes a starter supply of gum. There doesn’t have to be a trick. Just a treat.

LEGO Lord of the Rings Pinball Machine: J.R.R. Tilt-Kien

Much to the delight of fans, LEGO has been selling some nice big sets for a while now, so that nerds with disposable income can build some epic models. That said, I hold out the tiniest bit of hope that LEGO will turn Vladimir van Hoek’s full-size working Lord of the Rings pinball machine into a massive set we can buy. I doubt it will happen, but I want this so badly.

It features locales, and scenes from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, along with minifigs of some of the characters sprinkled throughout. Gollum is here, orcs guard Mount Doom, even Smaug is lurking about. While we don’t know how many pieces are in this amazing build, it is a stunning work of art. From the video, it looks like it plays pretty smoothly too. The scoreboard doesn’t do anything, but it looks like everything else works. I totally get that. It would be a tough task to wire this thing up to keep score. I don’t care about a high score anyway, I just love the game.

I would love to have this one in my home. Vladimir van Hoek, you win the LEGO pinball award. Who will rise up to dethrone him? I can’t wait to see.

Handmade Wooden Pinball Machines Feature Wonderful, Whimsical Illustrations

I’ve always loved playing pinball machines. I even have a classic 1990s Terminator 2 pinball machine in my basement. But not everyone has the spare cash or space needed to have a full-size pinball machine in their house. For those of you looking for something a little smaller and less expensive, these handmade pinball machines look pretty neat.

Each of these wooden pinball machines is handcrafted by designer Anti Saar and KolmElu. The machines feature working flippers, nails, and rubber band bumpers to bounce their balls around. While they’re quite primitive in terms of gameplay, what makes these pinball machines truly special is the artwork.

I love the illustrations, which come from various artists, and range from whimsical images from the pages of a children’s book, to images of monsters and architecture. They’ll make a great addition to a kid’s room, basement, or even an office.

Each table measures 90 x 44 x 22 cm (~35.4 x 17.3 x 8.66 in) and sells for $182.50 (USD) over on Etsy.

2-Player Pinball Machine: Ain’t Seen Nothing Like It In Any Amusement Hall

Typically, pinball is a one player at a time game, but artist Cristiana Felgueiras of Get Hands Dirty has created an awesome two player pinball machine that two players can use simultaneously. She had some help from Inventables‘ X-Carve 3D carving machine.

Both ends of the plywood and acrylic pinball table slopes up towards the middle, so both players’ balls can possibly dart across to the other player’s side.

This is a great idea. I love me a game of pinball, so naturally I would love to try this out. Check out Cristiana’s project video, and her Inventables project page, where she shows you the steps to build one for yourself using about $129 worth of supplies (not including the cost of the carving machine.)

It looks like it plays very well and would be a lot of fun. It’s sort of like air hockey, but with flippers. I would love to see people make more of these. I would play it for hours.

Skyrim and Fallout Virtual Pinball Machines Are Here

If you love pinball, you’ll love this news. Xbox One and PC owners can now get Bethesda’s new Skyrim, Fallout and Doom themed pinball machines. They are available today as DLC for the game Pinball FX 2.

You can try these new tables for a limited time for free and if you want to own them outright, the 3-pack will cost you $11(USD). I know many people don’t like digital pinball, but when it is done right, it can be just as fun as the real thing, and these tables look pretty fun indeed.

There is a lot of detail here. There are fully rendered models of fire-breathing dragons, vault-dwellers unleashing VAT-powered shots, and there’s even Skyrim’s lock-picking mini-game.
