ILMA lets you carry your lamp, CCTV, and smoke alarm on your travels

There seems to be a trend and a desire these days for products that do more than one thing, especially when it comes to tech gadgets. While minimalist design still informs the external appearance of some products, designers have become a bit craftier in hiding multiple functionalities from view. There are cases when more than one or two features unnecessarily increase the complexity of a product, but there are also times when combining functions into a single device sort of makes sense. Then again, one can also easily justify those use cases, even if they sound a bit convoluted. The jury is still out on which end of the scale ILMA falls, but this portable device might be a literal lifesaver for those who stay at hotels and Airbnb frequently, exactly because it mashes three devices into one.

Designer: André Terchanian

At first glance, two of ILMA’s functions are immediately apparent. It’s a cylindrical lamp sitting on top of a tall circular base with what is obviously a camera right in the middle. Aside from the obvious signs of a recording device, ILMA’s shape and design are meant to be a calming presence in any environment. It runs on a battery that can be charged via a USB-C cable, so it’s actually a portable lamp that you can take with you on your journeys. In fact, ILMA doesn’t actually make sense unless you actually travel a lot and stay at unfamiliar lodging.

That camera serves the purpose of a typical indoor home security camera, except it’s portable. It’s supposed to even have motion detection and tracking so that it can have a 360-degree view of your hotel room or Airbnb whenever you’re out. Alarms can be sent to your phone, just like any security camera, suggesting the presence of an unwelcome guest that may or may not be the cleaning crew.

The idea is that ILMA will be your sentry at your home away from home. There is always a sense of fear and uncertainty when staying in unfamiliar places, and this portable 3-in-1 device attempts to bring some peace of mind, in addition to some lighting at night. Of course, it won’t stop thieves from taking the ILMA itself, but at least you’ll have evidence to show authorities later.

ILMA actually has one other functionality that might come as a bit of a surprise. It is also a fire and smoke detector and can identify harmful gases like carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and paint thinner. The device will similarly send an alert to your phone in case it detects these substances in the room.

The designer also gave a lot of thought to the construction and packaging of ILMA. Its 18 parts are mostly held together by push and snap fits, making assembly and disassembly a lot easier. The box should also be made from 100% recyclable material and reduces the included accessories to just a USB-C cable, just like many smartphones today.

A Better Detector

00

BEEEEP! When your smoke detector is going off it seems like the reset button is the HARDEST thing EVER to reach! With Rook, you don’t have to fiddle with tiny buttons because the body functions as one big button. Finally, you can turn your false alarm off quickly and easily. Unlike the average sector, it’s also equally easy to change batteries. Once the batteries are running low, the Rook will make the user aware of this by emitting and reflecting a red light on the ceiling. Then you only have to turn open the Rook like a big bottle cap, put new batteries in the upper part and put the two parts back together. With a minimal yet functional design, it’s the best in both aesthetics and safety!

Sense+ iPhone Dock With Built-In Smoke Detector Might Just Save Your Life

Sense+

People have really begun giving more thought to how they make smartphone accessories. For example, the conceptual iPhone case with a built-in carbon monoxide detector could especially come in handy if you’re wary about carbon monoxide poisoning. Then there’s the Sense+ iPhone dock that does a one up on the case, because not only does it come with a gas detector, but it also has a built-in smoke detector and alarm.

The Sense+ isn’t just a concept though; it’s an actual product and it’s currently up for funding on Indiegogo. It’s a smart dock that comes with a companion app that provides you with custom personal protection options to safeguard the life of you and your family.

The Sense+ features a photoelectric smoke and gas detection sensors that can detect cold smoke that other systems might not be able to detect. This photoelectric sensor is then combined with a carbon monoxide sensor as a backup of sorts to protect you from even more threats. Once smoke is detected, an alert pops up and the Sense+ app will automatically start up the iPhone. If the user doesn’t respond, an alarm is sounded and the companion app will call emergency numbers listed on the phone.

The Sense+ draws power from the mains or from the docked device. It also has a built-in battery as a back-up power source. The dock is designed for iPhone 5 smartphones, but other devices can be connected via USB.

The Sense+ Dock is currently on Indiegogo, where a minimum pledge of $79 will get you one of your very own.

TaG is a Smoke Detector and Life-Saving Mask in One

Where there’s smoke, there’s bound to be fire. More people actually suffocate to death in fires rather than actually die by burning, so why not do something about this head-on?

That’s probably what Germain Verbrackel was thinking when he came up with TaG, which is short for ‘Take and Go.’ It’s basically a concept for a fire alarm-slash-gas mask so users can grab it and navigate corridors without having to breathe in all that smoky air.

It also uses flashing LED lights and a built-in locator to help the rescuers find and evacuate those who need help. Check out the video below to see how it would work:

Pretty ingenious, right?
