When it comes to designing cat furniture, the limit does not exist. Cats will turn anything into their personal stomping grounds. Whether it’s your laptop’s keyboard or the top of your entertainment center, cats will find it and transform it into their private playground.

MyZoo, a cat goods company, designs modern cat furniture that caters to your cat’s every need, while not disrupting your interior design. Solar, one of their more recent designs, is a wall-mountable floating cat bed that mounts onto any vertical surface so cats rest midair in their own designated space.

Shaped like the sun, Solar is a small, but sturdy floating cat bed that’s built from pinewood. In a similar fashion to their other pieces of cat furniture, MyZoo lined Solar with a slotted resting platform for safe jumping. Ideal for small spaces, Solar provides a resting spot and jumping platform for your cat and saves space in the meantime.

Unlike bulky cat towers and stringy scratching pads, Solar doesn’t take up any ground space and easily mounts to any wall where there’s room. Since cats love heights, MyZoo figured Solar was the best of both worlds–a space-saver for cat owners and an ideal resting spot for cats. Solar is also easy-to-assemble and even comes with assembly instructions, which can be found on YouTube, to streamline the assembly process.

Square to Square is a versatile furniture system for the modern home built on an internal and external sliding grid mechanism to save and create space.

Squares are known for the versatile nature of their shapes. It’s said that Le Corbusier saw squares as “the most refined and pure form in nature,” as young designer Kyungseon Nam puts it. Setting out to design a furniture system concept based on the multidimensionality of the square, Nam developed Square to Square.

Initially structured as a solid block, functional as a table or ottoman, Square to Square can turn into a full dining table or workspace setup. Built around an internal sliding grid system, Square to Square transforms from one configuration to the next with seamless transitions.

Square to Square’s initial form is divided between four quadrants that contain their own internal sliding grid system with hidden pull-out shelves and integrated cushioned booths. Positioned on top of an external sliding grid system, the hidden booth components of Square to Square can be pulled from each quadrant to reveal a four-person dining table setup.

Then, from each corner booth, a lower cushioned shelf can be pulled out to provide a resting place for your pets or even your feet. Each quadrant also contains spring mechanics that unload an elevated desk space that could function as a standing desk or raised shelf. Underneath the spring-loaded desk space, Nam incorporated a storage compartment where goods can be stored even when the optional desk space isn’t raised.

Taking advantage of the square’s chameleonic creative possibilities, Nam was able to conceptualize a multifunctional furniture system that not only saves space but creates space. Transforming from a solid, blank cube into a live-and-work space that also doubles as a dining area, Square to Square is the versatile and space-saving furniture system for the modern home.

Who isn’t fascinated by transforming furniture designs? I love watching how furniture can serve multiple purposes by simple actions like a pull of a string or folding of a flap. My latest love in the realm of (furniture) transformers is FLUP – a multifunctional furniture piece that is both a rug and a seat! Furniture designs like FLUP are perfect for smaller living spaces, especially with the growing tiny house movement.

In the unfolded position, FLUP works like a conventional mat or rug on which we can sit or step without interrupting the movement of people through the space. It transforms from plane to volume, from floor to space while changing the function with its shape. In the folded position, it works as a piece of minimal furniture – it can be used as a pouf, an auxiliary seat, a footrest, a nightstand, etc.

It is a perfect example of space-saving furniture. What makes it better is that there is no assembly required, it is a singular element that transforms with folds into another object like origami. With micro-apartments and being the new trend, flexible and lightweight furniture designs like FLUP are super handy. It is minimal, multifunctional and can be flat-packed for storage – there is no reason to not love FLUP!

Modular furniture is a tiny home’s most coveted design secret. As cities across the globe grow in population, living spaces are shrinking. Those who live in cities mostly live in tiny apartments or shared homes that require a lot of space budgeting. Meeting the spatial demands of tiny living spaces, furniture designers Lee PinYi and Su Ching Yao developed a modular, versatile furniture system called Better.

Better includes a collection of furniture pieces, ranging from office desks and bed frames to task chairs and coat racks, that hinge on a modular design to adapt to changing needs over time and provide extra storage space in small living spaces. Packaged just like a piece of furniture from IKEA, Better comes complete with simple, yet comprehensive assembly instructions and interchangeable parts that can give each piece of furniture a whole new look and function. Just like IKEA, Better boasts a simple and clean design scheme. Each piece of furniture shares assembly components, allowing users to swap different parts out for new ones, creating a totally new piece of furniture.

For example, a desk from Better might require the same parts used to build a coat rack, allowing users to recycle building materials and create their own piece of furniture from the start. Interchangeable parts also allow users to build on fully assembled pieces of furniture, adding storage compartments or leg rests when necessary. The height, finish, and integrated shelving for each component can be adjusted at any time by the user to build a piece of furniture totally unique to their own needs and living space.

The coat rack can carry as many racks as needed, allowing users to add or take away when necessary.

By getting creative, users can turn average workbenches into sleek entryway shoe benches.

The workbench can also double as a cot.

Saving space in tiny homes should be considered a sport. Finding the right furniture and storage organizers can take a while, but the wait is always worth it once the right pieces come along. One way to save space is by choosing multifunctional furniture like the & Chair from Taiwan-based designer Shin Chen, a piece of furniture that blends storage into a coffee table that doubles as a high stool and bench.

Inspired by the shape of the ampersand, & Chair flows into a natural shape, handmade from a collection of sustainable materials like felt and ash wood. & Chair can be positioned in different placements to change its use‒from upright to horizontal, the & Chair changes function as it changes position. When placed upright, the & Chair morphs into a standing coat rack with ample drawer storage, where smaller items like magazines and umbrellas can be stored. Then, users can bring the & Chair down, allowing it to work as a coffee table with storage space made available through a slot-and-rack system, where magazines and coffee table books can be kept. The & Chair can also always work as a bench when placed horizontally, making for an inviting entryway sitting bench where you can tie your shoes or a more discreet seating area for overflow in the living room.

Modeled after the ampersand, the & Chair’s name is symbolic for its multifunctionality, bringing out its chameleonic personality. Designed from warm, natural wood, the & Chair enhances each living space with a hint of abstract Scandinavian design marked by its wooden structure and unique shape that changes with each of its different uses.

We bring home new furniture pieces and desk accessories all the time and as our rooms fill up, the less storage space we have for new furniture. As we live in our homes, we want to buy furniture and appliances to help make our everyday life more efficient, but the more stuff we buy, the less space we have for actual living. In collaboration with Illumika, a team of designers based in Moscow created Furnicloud, a furniture system that helps to declutter busy living spaces through a modular and vertical design.

Furnicloud essentially functions as a system of aluminum rods that can be configured to attach different container modules and create more storage space. Composed primarily of boxes that come with lids and doors, the rods can be vertically placed in varying shapes for the boxes to attach to and fill. The boxes that come with Furnicloud come with drawers, doors, and shelves to optimize their storage capabilities. In addition to storage boxes, Furnicloud includes mirrors, lights, hangars, and other accessory-sized storage containers that can be strewn from the aluminum rods, stabilizing the furniture system as a whole. Constructed entirely from aluminum, Furnicloud comes in different shades, coats, and finishes, ensuring that each furniture system can be customized for each given living space.

As we move towards a more modernist, if not futurist, tomorrow, the world of design is taking cue with industrial and even brutalist design elements. Furnicloud wears an aluminum finish to adapt to any living space and the durable, stable quality of the furniture system adds to its industrial appeal.

This desk by Studio Michael Hilgers brings to life something we’ve all said too often – “I wish I could just fold it from here and here and then it would fit!” It optimizes corner space and while the desk doesn’t actually fold (it is not as flexible as it looks), the carefully crafted corner folds double up as small, elevated, built-in shelves!

This innovative desk design uses wall bars at its core with modular attachments that let you use it as your 9-5 set up and then transform it into beast mode.“The designer wall bars are one of the most flexible wall bars in Germany. Can be installed anywhere in the room without dowels. Just stretch it between the floor and the rigid ceiling,” says the team on the no-screw assembly which is a huge USP especially if you are renting your home or move frequently. Shapely additions crafted from wood make the aesthetic wall bars a multifunctional fitness device for the whole family. You can customize it per your ceiling and your needs, in fact, the company also sells kid-friendly setups that have slides instead of workout benches! It lets you use a single corner for a home office, homeschooling, home gym, and a kid zone seamlessly without taking up an insane amount of space.

Designed by the German design studio Kaschkasch, the FJU desk is an instance of a compact piece of furniture making the most of its structure. It is an extremely linear and simple wall desk, an example of a foldable workspace. It can be closed or folded up, to make use of the two tiers of storage (maybe as a magazine rack!) or as a sleek writing surface. The writing surface is spacious enough to contain your computer, laptop, iPad, books and etc. Its ‘foldable’ quality is all thanks to an innovative hidden mechanism, owing to the genius of the designers. Crafted from oak, the FJU desk is coated with an organic finishing of muted charcoal.

Patchwork is comprised of different, interchangeable panels that fold and expand like a traditional room divider. Patchwork panels provide plenty of different uses for each individual and function as a typical divider, work station, headboard, or some combination from the above. Patchwork incorporates a built-in closet space where users can hang their clothes and, thanks to a concealed padlock accessory, can also stow away personal possessions for secure storage. Patchwork also comes with supplemental shelving units, individual mirrors, and handy hooks so that the additional panels can be outfitted according to each user’s unique needs.

The latest piece to catch our eye has been the Kyali cat climber by MADE for its almost human furniture-like design because usually, a cat climber would stick out but this one just blends in like a cozy stool! The climber has a warm inviting vibe because of the woody tones and the soft fabric cushioning that will instantly draw your cats in for a nap. It is a blend of a bed and a dynamic game for your pets. Featuring three shelves or levels, Kyali’s goal was to provide plenty of fun for your feline friends without taking up too much room. It has a modular structure that lets you adjust the shape to create more space for cats to explore or to make it more compact to store.

An umbrella-shaped chair. The idea itself sounds absolutely outrageous until you realize how incredibly clever it is. Think about it… would you rather be carrying an umbrella with you wherever you go, or have those godawful wearable chair-legs strapped to your torso like Gabe from Silicon Valley? The answer is obviously the umbrella, given how ubiquitous it is. It’s compact, and more importantly, is socially acceptable. So when designer Yanagisawa Sera was looking for a way to reinvent the folding chair, hiding it inside an umbrella sounded like a perfect idea! What’s brilliant about the Hide And Seek chair is its sheer absurdity… along with the fact that it actually works! Sera went straight from the drawing board to the metal workshop to test his idea out and from the looks of it, the umbrella-shaped chair works – at least on a prototype level!

You know what is the most annoying thing about moving? Packing up your furniture which actually doesn’t really “pack” so you basically have to play Jenga with your pieces in the U-Haul truck. How cool would it be if we could roll up our furniture just like we roll up our clothes to save space right? Well, designer Richard Price kind of make it happen by creating Plus+ – a flat-packed furniture system that maximizes living space and minimizes storage space! Plus+ fits your needs and comes with multiple configurations. The flexible furniture system increases its likelihood to adapt by using a snap-together frame with a joint system across the whole range.

Meet the Transformer Table, a table that goes from being 18 inches in length to 10 feet long, expanding nearly 7 times in the process to fit everyone from a bachelor to a couple, to an entire dinner party filled with guests. Now in its third iteration, the Transformer Table is longer, sturdier, easier to operate, and comes in a variety of styles. The designers behind the table’s slide-to-expand design went back to the drawing board to see how they could make their original expanding table a tad bit better and realized there was a lot they could do. That ‘lot’ culminated into the Transformer Table 3.0 Collection, a series of furniture that uses the same telescopic sliding mechanism to expand. Rather than just a simple table, the Transformer Table series also comes with a bench and even features a higher counter-style table option.

When it comes to kitchen appliances such as microwaves and ovens, they do tend to be bulky and space-consuming. However, the Wall-Mountable Oven is a smart microwave, that as its name implies can be mounted upon a wall. You simply press a button that brings down its front cover, which doubles up as the platform to place your dish upon. You then pull down the main cover, enclosing your dish within the microwave!

Designed to be compact enough to fit into any space, yet comfortable enough to have you sink right in with your favorite book, the Conch comes with a molded-plywood inner body and a dual-density foam outer body, giving it structure as well as supple softness. The chair’s form conforms to the contours of the body, allowing you to sit comfortably, while also conveniently having a storage unit right under you for everything from books to a cushion to other bric-a-brac. It’s the perfect reading spot for one!

Chaise Renversée is a desk that can also transform into a long chair by the famous French architect Pierre-Louis Gerlier. The literal translation of Chaise Renversée is ‘chair overturned’. Since we are all cooped up in our homes, we are constantly finding ways to optimize space. Especially if you live in a city, you are likely to have everyday objects that are modular so that you have a functional space. Our current situation and the need to be flexible within a small space is exactly what inspired Gerlier to design the Chaise Renversée. It is the perfect blend of work from home and Netflix from home into one piece of modern furniture, it provides a stable table area to work and can then transform into the ‘Chaise Lounge’ when you want to relax.

Tumble is the perfect example of intuitive product design which is well-tailored for ultra-modern interiors. It is essentially a platform that serves as a chair, side table, bench seat, storage unit, bookshelf, center table, or lounger. Depending on the nature of use and the available interior space, Tumble can be put to good use with a bit of creative thinking. The furniture piece is crafted out of natural agglomerated cork and natural oak, making it good for the environment too. The use of these biodegradable materials should not let you into believing that the modular platform lacks structural strength. It can take the weight of an above-average weighing adult and the only thing you need to cautious of is to keep water away from it.

KUR!O’s Shelving Unit doesn’t just let you build a shelf, it lets you build YOUR OWN shelf the way you see fit. KUR!O’s design features a simple grid base that you wedge shelving-plates into. The plates interlock with each other, creating walls and floors for your shelf, allowing you to store all your belongings in the dedicated spaces you planned out for them! The base of the shape-shifting, infinitely customizable shelf is its underlying grid, made from sandwiched wood-fiber boards. The cuts in the grid go as much as 20mm deep, allowing you press-fit powder-coated steel panels into it. The 2mm thick panels are heavy-duty enough to take on large loads, making the KUR!O robust, despite the fact that there isn’t any screwing or gluing of parts.

Even though these wooden chairs might look visually similar to the IKEA ones at first glance, they actually work with indoor settings too unlike the usual patio seating. They are classier and can be used in any room/interior setting. The first wooden chair has strings that form the seat and the backrest, it may make you doubtful of comfort but the strings act like fabric and contour around your body for maximum comfort. The string tension also makes sure that you are well supported. The second chair is like a classic window transformed into a chair with one swivel motion. Because it is a smooth, singular vertical plank when closed, it is easier to stack/store. It gives a true ergonomic benefit by supporting the user to comfortably be in NASA’s Neutral Body Position which was developed to promote better health in astronauts when they live in a zero-gravity environment. The user can work in different positions that are as natural as being in bed while supporting the body’s posture as if they are working on a desk. The weight is distributed across multiple points in the body which is healthier than the seated desk position which concentrates force downwards on the lower back.

NÓMADA is a modular, multi-purpose bedside table. The team behind NÓMADA decided to attain the bedside table’s modularity through the material used during its production process by carving and integrating notches, buttons, and twisted, narrow chutes into each wooden and steel panel used for construction. The end result makes up a bedside table that appears simple and whose purpose seems singular upon first glance, but when deconstructed, the possibilities for restructuring NÓMADA are laid out in front of you, all you have to do is mix-and-match as your tabular needs guide you. NÓMADA is capable of producing twelve different configurations so that it can adapt to any of your needs or living spaces.

Inspired by the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian’s composition of form and color, the Mondrian setup was made to allow a wide range of applications and blend into any interior setting. The aim was to solve three issues we experience with watching TV as we currently do – taking up space, not matching with the aesthetics, and lack of expandability. Urban apartments and single-person households need to maximize their space and should not have to choose between a large appliance and furniture when they can have both. Talking about interior aesthetics, TVs are now increasingly slimmer while the furniture remains warm and cozy – this causes a visual mismatch when the two are put together. Mondrian’s design serves both purposes with one seamless structure. TVs are now being used in many ways and need to be able to adapt to the different content it supports, not just static pre-made products.

CatYou in a Circle is a wonderful display of modular pieces that work for both humans and pets. The set includes a floor sofa and a coffee table that aims to create a relaxing space for cats and their owners to have some downtime. The hollow armrests and backrest offer cats a playground and hiding territory while the coffee table provides a place to sleep. The woven bamboo texture makes it possible for owners to see their cats even when they are hiding and play with them through its holes. The size of holes is different in different parts of the furniture to adapt to the needs of the pet as well as humans. The backrest holes are smaller to make the cats feel more secure. But holes above are bigger so that when people lean on the sofa, they can see through the backrest and find their cats underneath.

The MOON Cabinet is a timeless looking piece that is crafted from solid wood finished off with rounded corners that give it an organic form. “We got the three elements from deconstructing traditional wooden cabinets and immovable system furniture,” says award-winning furniture designer Chuang. MOON allows the user to have a flexible lifestyle as this one cabinet serves many different purposes thanks to its modular build. You can combine, assemble, and deconstruct it to fit your space or transform it from storage to seating. Just like the phases of the moon, the shape of this cabinet changes to fit different needs – in fact, it has a little circular cutout detail to symbolize that. I love that you can stack it up or take it apart to change the height of the piece as a whole.

Furniture for small spaces is essential and can make the difference between you loving or disliking your cozy zone.
