The Ultimate Tactical EDC Upgrade: Tekto’s A2 Badger OTF Knife Packs a Punch

Named after the world’s most fearless animal, the Honey Badger, the A2 Badger from Tekto has quite a reputation to live up to… and let’s be honest, it does. It’s tiny yet ridiculously capable, with a 1.85-inch OTF blade on the front that deploys as soon as you hit the switch on the handle, and a glass-breaker on the end that makes the A2 Badger a formidable EDC literally from head to toe!

OTF knives are a little different from your standard folding blades; they’re spring-loaded switchblades that shoot straight out from the front of the handle. It’s a thrill to watch and even better when you realize just how functional that quick deployment can be. Whether you’re a tactical aficionado or just someone who appreciates a well-designed knife, the A2 Badger could be your new favorite.

At first glance, you wouldn’t expect much from a knife that measures just 5.26 inches when open. But don’t let the size fool you. The A2 Badger packs a 1.85-inch tanto-style blade made from titanium-coated D2 steel. This isn’t your average pocket knife. The tanto blade’s angular tip is engineered for strength, perfect for piercing tasks or cutting through tough materials. And because it’s coated in titanium, the blade offers added durability and resistance to wear and tear. It’s the kind of material you want on your side when you’re deep into an outdoor adventure or facing a split-second emergency.

The A2 Badger button boasts an exceptional grip, ensuring maximum grip and control in any situation.

With its compact and lightweight design, the A2 Badger is both easy to store and transport, making it a popular choice among outdoor enthusiasts and those with limited space.

Featuring an oversized lanyard hole, this knife design accommodates a wider range of attachment options, including larger cords and paracords.

The A2 Badger doesn’t just stop at being sharp; it’s thoughtful in its design, too. The oversized lanyard hole is a small detail, but one that makes a big difference. You can easily thread larger cords or paracords through it, making the knife more accessible when you’re in challenging environments. Speaking of environments, the 6061 aluminum handle is lightweight yet durable, designed to withstand the kind of rugged conditions that would send a lesser knife packing. Plus, there’s a button lock mechanism in place that ensures the blade stays secure, whether you’re opening or closing it, so you can count on the knife when it matters most.

But what makes the A2 Badger stand out isn’t just its functionality—it’s how easily it fits into your life. At a featherlight 2.18 ounces and just 3.3 inches small when closed, this is Tekto’s smallest OTF knife (even tinier than their A5 Spry Mini). Yet, its size is deceptive; this little tool is nimble, quick to deploy, and engineered for ambidextrous use. A pocket clip can be attached on either side of the handle, making it perfect for left or right-handed users. Plus, at the end of the handle is a glass-breaker tip that can be used to shatter through even laminated and reinforced glass panels – perfect for an emergency escape (especially when paired with the D2 blade for cutting through seatbelts). It’s an ideal everyday carry tool, whether you’re heading into the great outdoors, running errands around town, or even protecting yourself in an emergency.

For those who like options, Tekto delivers. The A2 Badger comes in three grip colors—Black, Desert, and OD Green—so you can match it with your style or other gear. Whether you’re a seasoned outdoorsman, a first responder, or just someone who values great design, the A2 Badger proves that sometimes, the best things really do come in small packages.

Tactical and Practical: This 6-in-1 Titanium EDC Multitool Packs Versatility in a Compact Form

Remember those thick pens back in the ’90s and early 2000s with three-four refills that could individually be deployed? The same pen could write in red, blue, black, or even green, and truth be told, that’s about as versatile as pens got back in the day, but not today. Something as slim as a pen today can write, measure, cut, carve, assemble/disassemble, and even break windows. Meet the Ti-ONE, a 6-in-1 pen-shaped EDC multitool that doesn’t pack a punch, it packs an entire 6-step melee combo. The tool, no bigger than a pencil measuring less than 4 inches tall, packs a Cutting Blade, a Craft Blade, a multi-bit Screwdriver, an Eternal Pen, A Window-breaker, and even a multi-unit Ruler or Scale. Crafted from either titanium or stainless steel depending on the variant you choose, this tool is both lightweight and remarkably durable, making it a perfect companion whether you’re camping outdoors or just tackling everyday tasks at home. At just 90mm (3.5 inches) in length and 10mm in width, it’s sleek, sophisticated, and engineered to perform.

Designer: Clean One

The Ti-ONE’s six tools exist within a modular form factor no larger than the average index finger. The body features a multi-point swiveling design that either reveals the Ti-ONE’s cutting blade, or a hex-bit docking zone that lets you attach a variety of modules from screwdriver bits to stationery. The swiveling design has a unique fidget-like quality to it, but it also gives the Ti-ONE the ability to shapeshift between tools and even transform into a high-torque driver just in case you’re working with tough screws and bolts.

The first tool is the Ti-ONE’s Cutting Knife, a built-in drop-point blade. Made from steel, the blade offers the ability to achieve quite a few indoor or outdoor tasks, from opening mail to cutting/whittling branches outdoors. It’s fairly durable and lends itself rather well to intense tasks, but the best part is its ability to un-dock from the knife, letting you detach it when you want to carry your EDC on flights.

While the Cutting Knife has its specific skill-set, for other kinds of cutting, you’ve got a Craft Knife mount that accepts scalpel blades. The cutting knife isn’t replaceable, but the Craft Knife’s blades are. They’re ridiculously sharp, making them perfect for working with precision, whether it’s slicing paper, working with materials like leather or cardboard, or even carving/scraping hard materials like plastic or soft wood. Scalpel blades, made from surgical-grade steel, are a little more fragile than the Ti-ONE’s own knife, which is why they’re designed to be replaceable. They come in a variety of styles too, so you can alter the shape of the blade too – something that makes them a tad more versatile than the included Cutting Knife.

Moving beyond blades, the Ti-ONE comes with an ‘Eternal Pen’ module that lets you almost literally write forever. Designed to write up to 10,000 meters, it becomes an indispensable companion for anyone on the go. The pen fits effortlessly into the compact frame, always ready for those moments of inspiration or necessity. Whether you’re sketching out a design, jotting down field notes, or signing documents, the Eternity Pen delivers smooth, reliable performance. Moreover, built with a standard threaded design, the Eternal Pen’s nib can be replaced for traditional graphite or even any color-pencil nibs, giving you a veritable stationery set in your palms.

When it comes to functionality, the Ti-ONE’s screwdriver is a standout feature. But this isn’t your average screwdriver—it’s engineered for versatility and strength. Dock the bit in and you’ve got yourself a standard screwdriver that’s fairly elementary… but swing the Ti-ONE’s outer arm down and you now have an L-shaped screwdriver, allowing for high-torque use that makes it ideal for both small, precise adjustments and heavier jobs. Whether you’re fixing something at home or tackling a repair on the go, the tool’s design ensures that you have the leverage you need without the bulk of a full-sized driver. The clever, external extension port means it can reach deep, narrow spaces that traditional screwdrivers struggle to access, so no screw is too far out of reach.

The L-shaped Screwdriver in action

What sets the Ti-ONE apart is its compatibility with standard hex bits, giving you the freedom to use the bits from your existing screwdriver set. It comes equipped with a single Phillips head bit, which covers most everyday tasks. But for those situations where you need a flathead, Torx, or specialized bit, you can simply swap in any standard hex bit of your choosing. This flexibility is a game-changer, transforming the Ti-ONE from a simple EDC tool into an essential part of your toolkit. You no longer need to carry multiple screwdrivers or worry about the right bit for the job—Ti-ONE adapts to your needs, effortlessly.

The square cross-section lends a few advantages to the Ti-ONE. For starters, it prevents the tool from rolling around the way a pencil or pen would, while also offering a better grip thanks to the squarish design that’s perfect for when you’re working with screws and such. However, the flat surfaces of the sides of the Ti-ONE also double as a tiny makeshift scale, allowing you to measure in both imperial and metric units. Sure, at just 3.5 inches in length, there isn’t much you can measure… but it’s still a neat add-on.

Lastly (and by no measure the least) is the Ti-ONE’s emergency window-breaker tip, which sits at the end of the device. Designed to instantly shatter reinforced or laminated glass, this glass-breaker might look small, but is quite literally the difference between life and death. The inclusion of this tool really makes the Ti-ONE a must-have EDC, allowing you to make quick exits from buildings and vehicles in an emergency. Pair it with the scalpel blade’s ability to cut through a seatbelt like a knife through butter and you’ve really got yourself a life-saver on your hands. Quite a hefty reputation for something the size of a pencil, no?!

The Ti-ONE comes in two variants, with the stainless steel version starting at $59, and the titanium at $79. Both have the exact same design and features (including even tritium slots in the body for adding glow vials), except the titanium variant has the added advantage of being stronger, lighter, rust-proof, and just being nearly 4x stronger than stainless steel, giving you an EDC that could – for all intents and purposes – last multiple lifetimes. Grab yours now and the Ti-ONE begins shipping globally in December.

Leatherman ARC Obsidian: The Ultimate Everyday Carry Multi-Tool

Leatherman has been a trusted name in multi-tools for years, and when it comes to everyday carry (EDC), the ARC Obsidian is nothing short of the mother of all EDC tools. At Yanko Design, we appreciate practical and well-designed gear, and this multi-tool hits the mark. Made in the USA, the ARC Obsidian is built to handle everything from routine tasks to more demanding situations, making it an essential piece for anyone serious about their everyday carry.

Designer: Leatherman

A Thoughtful Blend of Functionality and Durability

Right away, the ARC Obsidian’s matte black PVD-coated handles catch your attention. The coating gives it a refined, professional look and helps protect the tool from corrosion and wear over time. The combination of the PVD coating with DLC-coated components makes this tool highly durable and able to withstand everyday use and more challenging environments.

At the center of it all is the MagnaCut steel blade. Known for its toughness and excellent edge retention, this steel gives the blade strength and longevity. Whether you’re dealing with small, precise cutting tasks or something more demanding, the blade stays sharp and resists corrosion, a must for anyone who needs reliability in their EDC.

Despite being packed with tools, the ARC Obsidian maintains a compact form. With a closed length of 4.25 inches and a weight of around 8.6 oz., it’s easy to carry without feeling cumbersome. The balance between size and functionality makes it a perfect fit for those who need a tool they can rely on for everyday tasks and in more challenging environments.

Easy Access and Ergonomic Design

One key aspect of the ARC Obsidian is its user-friendly design. Leatherman’s technology makes it easy to access many tools with just one hand, which is a huge plus when you’re multitasking or in a situation where one hand is occupied. The tools open smoothly and lock into place securely, giving you confidence in their stability during use.

The locking mechanisms are beneficial with tools like the pliers and bit drivers, ensuring that they won’t accidentally fold or shift once they’re in use. Every tool, from the scissors to the file, is strategically placed for easy access, meaning you won’t waste time hunting for the right one. The convenience of grabbing the tool you need quickly makes it a versatile option for any EDC setup.

How the tools are arranged also helps reduce hand strain during extended use. Whether you’re tightening a screw with the bit driver or cutting through material with the saw, everything is positioned in a way that feels intuitive and ergonomic, making the tool easy to handle over time.

Built for Versatility with 20 Tools

Leatherman has packed 20 useful tools into the ARC Obsidian without sacrificing usability or portability. It comes equipped with everything from a large and small bit driver to needlenose pliers and a saw. The MagnaCut blade, as expected, performs flawlessly across different applications, retaining its edge even after extended use.

One of the most requested features—bit drivers—has been integrated into the design with both large and small options and nine double-ended bits. This means that no matter what kind of fastening task you encounter, the ARC Obsidian has you covered. The variety of bits, including Torx, hex, and Robertson, ensures you’re prepared for almost any situation.

Additionally, the replaceable wire cutters and hard-wire cutters mean that heavy use won’t wear the tool down over time. These components can be easily swapped out, prolonging the tool’s life without needing an entirely new multi-tool. Other features like the diamond-coated and wood/metal files add to the tool’s versatility, handling everything from sharpening to smoothing rough edges.

Despite the range of tools, the ARC Obsidian remains slim and easy to carry. This balance between function and portability is one of its greatest strengths, ensuring that you always have the right tool without adding unnecessary bulk to your gear.

Ready for the Toughest Conditions

Durability is one of the ARC Obsidian’s key strengths. The MagnaCut steel blade offers exceptional corrosion resistance, toughness, and long-lasting sharpness. This material is well-suited to handle everyday tasks, but its reliability becomes even more valuable in harsher environments. Whether you’re working through routine jobs or tackling more rugged conditions, the blade is designed to maintain its edge and perform consistently over time.

The PVD-coated handles and DLC-coated components further reinforce the tool’s durability. These coatings help protect against corrosion and wear, ensuring the tool remains functional and looks sharp even after heavy use. Whether in a humid, wet environment or used daily, the materials chosen for the ARC Obsidian keep it going strong over time.

For anyone who values a tool that can handle a bit of everything—from cutting and fastening to filing and crimping—the ARC Obsidian is built to last. It’s designed with durability and functionality, making it stand out from other multi-tools, no matter the conditions it faces.

Ready for Everyday Tasks or the Unexpected

The ARC Obsidian isn’t just about extreme environments or specialized tasks. It’s also built to handle the little things you face daily. Whether you’re cutting rope, fixing gear, or just tightening a loose screw, this multi-tool is versatile enough to cover a wide range of everyday tasks.

Tools like the spring-action scissors, the bottle opener, and the wire stripper add to the tool’s usefulness in routine situations. The MagnaCut blade makes quick work of cutting tasks, from slicing through thick material to handling more delicate jobs, and the one-handed operation adds convenience, particularly in moments when you need to act fast.

Versatile for Any User

While it’s a strong choice for professionals who need a reliable tool for demanding jobs, the ARC Obsidian works just as well for those who value having a high-quality multi-tool in their everyday carry. It includes replaceable wire cutters, hard-wire cutters, and various bits, making it practical for many users.

The ARC Obsidian’s versatility means it’s not limited to one type of user. It’s equally useful for outdoor enthusiasts, DIYers, and anyone who values a reliable tool they can carry daily. With 20 integrated tools, all in a slim and durable package, this multi-tool proves that you don’t have to compromise between functionality and portability.

Leatherman’s ARC Obsidian redefines what an EDC tool can be. Whether it’s the MagnaCut blade, the durable coatings, or the carefully arranged tools, every detail is designed to provide the best in everyday use and more demanding situations. It’s the kind of tool that’s always ready, no matter what’s ahead.

EDITOR'S QUOTE:

The Titanium Milanese Loop brings next-level engineering, rivaling Rolex's precision, durability, and seamless blend of luxury and functionality.
award-icon

When I first saw the Milanese Loop for the Apple Watch Ultra 2 at the Apple Glowtime event, it immediately grabbed my attention as an impressive leap forward in band design. Inspired by stainless steel mesh historically used by divers, this new Titanium Milanese Loop is made from woven, corrosion-resistant titanium wire. It’s flattened and polished to a stunning satin texture that balances ruggedness and elegance. The parachute-style buckle features dual side-release buttons that close with an audible click, giving a sense of security whether exploring the ocean depths or heading out for a night on the town.

Designer: Apple

This band perfectly complements the Apple Watch Ultra 2’s rugged design, offering lightweight durability while looking refined. Whether heading into a meeting, swimming in the pool, hiking, or deep diving, I know the Titanium Milanese Loop can handle it without sacrificing style or functionality.

Now available in a striking new black titanium finish, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 proves why it’s the go-to choice for serious athletes and adventurers. Featuring the brightest display ever on an Apple device, the Ultra 2’s LTPO2 OLED Always-on Retina display delivers up to 3000 nits of brightness, making it highly visible even in the harshest sunlight. In comparison, the Apple Watch Series 10 offers a display brightness of up to 2000 nits and a wide-angle OLED that increases brightness by up to 40% when viewed at an angle. The Ultra 2 delivers battery life, lasting up to 36 hours during regular use and 72 hours in low power mode, compared to 18 hours of standard usage on the Series 10. Combined with the new Titanium Milanese Loop, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 represents a seamless marriage of aesthetics and performance, capable of handling the most demanding terrains while looking sophisticated enough for any occasion.

Design, Custom Fit, and Next-Level Engineering Marvel

The Milanese Loop design has a long history rooted in traditional chainmail used by divers, but Apple has reimagined it with a modern touch. The Titanium Milanese Loop, crafted specifically for the Ultra, caught my eye from the moment I saw it at the Apple Glowtime event. Made from aerospace-grade titanium, the band is lightweight and corrosion-resistant, offering strength and comfort—a perfect match for the Ultra 2’s rugged yet refined style.

What impressed me most was Apple’s commitment to craftsmanship, as the band is created through a meticulous process of weaving, flattening, laser-welding, grinding, and finely polishing the titanium wire to form a precise, interlinking mesh that balances both strength and flexibility. This design drapes comfortably on the wrist while maintaining durability. I immediately appreciated the dual-button, parachute-style buckle, which made adjusting my wrist’s natural fluctuations throughout the day incredibly easy. Whether due to temperature changes or the ebb and flow of daily activity, I could quickly loosen or tighten the fit without needing to remove the watch. This level of adjustment, down to 1mm, truly made the band feel custom-made for my wrist.

Apple’s decision to use titanium wasn’t only about strength and practicality for everyday use. The dual-release buckle offers peace of mind, providing a secure fit during various activities without any concern about it coming undone. Whether in natural or black titanium, the band perfectly complements the Ultra 2’s new black titanium finish. Achieved through a custom blasting process and enhanced with a diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating, this finish provides excellent scratch resistance, ensuring the watch and band look as good after months of wear as they did the first day I tried them.

The Titanium Milanese Loop combines aesthetics, ruggedness, and sustainability. Made from 95% recycled titanium, this band aligns with Apple’s focus on environmentally responsible materials. In my experience, it’s a stylish, practical, and durable accessory. This blend of qualities makes it a great long-term choice for anyone seeking a band that complements the Ultra 2’s versatility and style.

Fit and Comfort: Tailored for Performance

The Milanese Loop for the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is breathable and flexible, making it a great fit for all-day wear. Depending on your personal preferences, there are a couple of things to consider. While some users with wrist hair might experience slight pulling due to the mesh design, I haven’t had this issue myself.

As someone who prefers a snug fit, I tend to wear my watch a bit tighter to prevent it from moving around, a habit formed from years of wearing traditional mechanical watches. If you wear the Ultra 2 tightly, as I do, you’ll notice a slight indentation after a long day, but there’s no discomfort associated with it. It’s more about leaving a mark than feeling any pain. This tight fit keeps the watch in place, making it feel more secure during physical activities, whether hiking, diving, or running errands.

This band’s ability to adjust down to the millimeter makes it incredibly versatile for any wrist size. It’s great to know Apple offers an extra-long tail version for those needing additional length—whether to wear over a wetsuit or simply because of larger wrists.

For me, the combination of the Titanium Milanese Loop and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is all about striking the right balance between durability, comfort, and design. It’s the kind of band that seamlessly fits into my daily life, whether I’m out hiking, working in the yard, or tackling outdoor adventures. This band doesn’t just look good; it’s made to endure, and it pairs perfectly with the rugged nature of the Ultra 2. The thoughtful engineering and comfort of the Milanese Loop make it feel like it’s built to last, keeping up with the adventurous spirit that the Ultra 2 embodies.

Band Size and Fit

I went with the medium size for the Titanium Milanese Loop, which fits perfectly. The buckle centers squarely on the back of my wrist, which, for someone like me with a bit of OCD, brings a sense of balance that I appreciate. Wearing a watch every day is an intimate experience, and I pay close attention to how it sits—whether it’s a mechanical watch with a deployment buckle or a tang, every detail matters. The centered buckle feels right and adds to the comfort of wearing the Ultra 2 all day.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 on Titanium Milanese Loop

At the Apple event, I had the chance to try on the small size, but I could barely get the watch past my knuckle. Unless you have particularly thin wrists or plan on wearing this over a wetsuit, I’d recommend opting for the medium. It strikes the right balance for everyday wear, and it offers enough room for quick adjustments when needed.

Here are the official band size details:

  • Small: Fits wrists 130–160mm.
  • Medium: Fits wrists 155–185mm.
  • Large: Fits wrists 180–210mm.

With those ranges, the medium size should comfortably accommodate most wrist sizes. However, for anyone needing extra length—especially for wearing over bulkier gear like a wetsuit—the large size is the way to go. In my experience, getting the right fit goes a long way in maximizing the band’s comfort and aesthetics.

Value: A Long-Term Investment

Priced at $200 on its own or $100 more when bundled with the Apple Watch Ultra 2, the Titanium Milanese Loop might seem like a luxury option for an Apple Watch band. However, compared to titanium bracelets from brands like Rolex and Omega, which typically cost in the range of thousands of dollars, the value becomes clear. Apple has crafted a premium product that brings the high-end feel of titanium—usually reserved for much more expensive timepieces—into the world of wearable tech at a fraction of the price.

For someone like me who regularly upgrades their Apple Watch, the band’s value goes beyond the Ultra 2 itself. Apple’s consistent design language across its product line ensures this band will likely remain relevant with future watch models. Investing in this Titanium Milanese Loop means you’re getting a durable and stylish band that will serve you through multiple upgrades.

Another critical factor is the dual-lock system, which offers unbeatable security. Whether I’m out hiking, diving, or just going about my daily routine, I know the band is securely fastened, giving me peace of mind no matter what. Its durability, ease of use, and ability to adapt across future models make this band a smart investment for anyone who values functionality and design in their Apple Watch accessories.

Final Thoughts

The Titanium Milanese Loop for the Apple Watch Ultra 2 has quickly become one of my favorite bands. It offers that perfect mix of durability, premium design, and all-day comfort, whether in the field or just going through my daily routine. I’ve been wearing it for everything from outdoor activities to long workdays, and it never fails to deliver on comfort and style. I’ll continue to revisit this band in future articles as I spend more time with it. If you have any questions or thoughts about the band, feel free to drop me a note—I’d love to hear your feedback!

7-in-1 Titanium EDC Multitool combines both Tactical Gear and a Toolshed into the Ultimate Portable Form

Imagine a toolbox that fits in your palm. Not a metaphor, but an actual toolbox of sorts. The Titanium Multifunctional Magnetic Screwdriver or the TI-MMS for short, is a marvel of compact multitool design that packs a surprising punch. Small enough to disappear in your pocket but packed with enough features to handle a range of everyday situations, it’s like a Swiss Army knife that’s been reimagined for the modern tinkerer. Crafted from Grade 5 titanium, this EDC is light, corrosion-proof, and tough enough to survive whatever you can throw at it—whether that’s a quick fix at home, an emergency situation, or a tactical escape.

Designer: Comandi

Click Here to Buy Now: $69 $99 (30% off). Hurry, only 174/200 left!

About the size of a car keyfob, the TI-MMS packs as many as 7 different tools within its palm-sized design, starting with a multi-bit screwdriver. Inside its compact frame, you’ll find a set of 4 hex bits neatly stored with magnets. No more digging through a drawer or toolbox for the right bit—when you need a driver, the TI-MMS lets you mount those bits on top for a standard screwdriver experience. However, if you want to upgrade your drive, mount the bits on the side, within the TI-MMS’ ratchet mechanism that lets you apply some serious torque without feeling like you’re wrestling a stubborn screw. This side-mount option offers a more comfortable grip, especially for those longer jobs where your wrist usually starts protesting.

Beyond its screwdriver duties, the TI-MMS also handles everyday tasks like a breeze. Tucked into its sleek body is a multi-functional pry bar, perfect for prying open stuck lids or pulling out nails. Cutouts in the multitool’s side serve as a hex wrench, with slots that fit 4mm and 6mm nuts, making it handy for tightening bolts when a full toolbox isn’t an option. And for those moments when you need to slice through something—be it tape, a package, or whatever else life throws at you—there’s a foldable scalpel blade that takes replaceable 11# surgical blades. The best part? It’s TSA-compliant. Just pop the blade out before flying, and the tool remains travel-friendly.

While the scalpel blade is designed to also serve as a self-defense tool, the TI-MMS’ integrated window-breaker is perfect for tactical and emergency exits – a feature you hope you never need but are glad to have just in case. A ceramic bead is perched at the top of the tool, ready to smash through glass in an emergency. You never know when you might need to make a quick escape, and this little feature makes sure you’re covered, whether you’re dealing with an actual emergency or just one of those days when you accidentally lock yourself in (or even outside) the car.

In true multifunctional spirit, the TI-MMS also throws in a blunt saw edge (conveniently placed on the pry bar) for more stubborn cutting like thick branches. And for the night owls or outdoor adventurers, there’s an option to install tritium vials in six pre-cut slots, giving the tool a glow-in-the-dark effect that makes it easy to find in your bag or tent, even when the lights are long gone.

Grade-5 titanium was an inspired choice for this tool. Known for its durability and resistance to corrosion, the TI-MMS is built to last while staying remarkably light. At just 80 grams, it’s easy to carry around in your pocket or attached to a keychain, without feeling like it’s weighing you down. Details like brass gaskets and a well-designed integrated lock for your blades just add a chef’s kiss to the overall build. Although the folks at Comandi don’t explicitly say so, the multitool should last you decades without showing any signs of giving up. That’s where the replaceable scalpel blade comes in handy too, allowing you to switch old blades out for new ones so you spend less time sharpening your multitool’s blade and more time actually using it.

And while the TI-MMS covers almost everything you could need in a tool, there is one thing I personally miss: a bottle opener! After a long day of fixing, prying, and cutting, wouldn’t it be nice to crack open a cold one? The TI-MMS ships globally, starting at a discounted price of $69. This includes the compact 7-in-1 multitool itself, along with a detachable scalpel blade, and free worldwide shipping.

This Titanium EDC is an advanced analog calculator, a measuring tool, and a brilliant fidget toy

All great things are circular. The sun and moon, the metaphorical circle of life, pizzas, donuts, CDs, the iPod jog wheel, and the Mini Titanium Curve Measure Slide Rule from the folks at Titaner. Sure, that intro sounded rather grandiose, but this humble little torus-shaped device transcends the simple rolling scale. Crafted from a combination of titanium and copper, the Mini Titanium Curve Measure Slide Rule can measure linear and non-linear distances (in multiple units), but it can also add (or subtract) and even multiply using basic logarithmic principles. In short, this tiny handheld device is stationery from an alternate reality, capable of doing multiple things in a form factor mainstream tools haven’t explored before. The added bonus? It doubles as a fidget toy, making it just the perfect EDC for creative-folk.

Designer: TITANER

At first glance, this slide rule stands out with its sleek, circular form. Unlike traditional straight rulers, the TITANER’s hubless ring-shaped design allows for continuous measurements along any surface, whether flat or curved. Its circular construction eliminates the limitations of a fixed, linear ruler, offering limitless potential for measuring longer lengths by simply rolling it along a surface. This continuous loop system is what sets the TITANER apart, making it a versatile tool for designers, engineers, and DIY enthusiasts who often need to measure odd shapes and sizes without being limited by scales and measuring tapes.

Measure irregular shapes so fast

With a 10 cm circumference of the outer ring (there’s a larger 5-inch variant too), the Mini Titanium Slide Rule provides precise readings through a combination of outer and inner rings. Synchronizing both before use ensures measurement accuracy. For example, to measure a distance, you roll the ruler across the surface and count the number of full revolutions (marked by slight vibrations) while noting the final position of the inner ring relative to the outer scale. Adding these values together gives you the total length, making it a breeze to measure long or curved paths without having to reposition the tool.

No limit to extension length

The slide rule also incorporates simple arithmetic functions. On one side of the tool, you can use logarithmic principles to add values, and on the other, you can multiply. To add two numbers, you find the logarithms of the values on the outer ring, and their sum gives you the result of the addition. Similarly, for multiplication, the rule allows you to calculate the product of two numbers by summing their logarithms and aligning the rings accordingly. While this feature may seem rooted in history, it’s surprisingly intuitive and adds a layer of intellectual engagement that transforms this measuring tool into a small calculating device.

No need to reposition

Crafted from titanium, this slide rule is built to last. Titanium, known for its strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion, ensures that this tool will endure daily wear and tear, making it a perfect companion for outdoor activities or everyday tasks. Weighing only 20 grams, the TITANER is light enough to carry with you wherever you go. Its small size (just 31.8 mm in diameter) and thickness of 5.3 mm make it a discreet yet powerful tool that fits comfortably in your pocket or can be worn as a pendant.

The precision of this ruler is highlighted by its laser-engraved scale, which ensures that measurements are not only easy to read but also resistant to fading over time. Each marking is meticulously etched with high accuracy, providing clear and durable references even after prolonged use. The high processing precision, down to 0.01 mm, guarantees that each rotation is smooth and that measurements remain consistent across multiple uses.

Rolling Ruler

The Role of Ceramic Beads

Beyond its practical applications, the TITANER Mini Slide Rule serves as an excellent everyday carry (EDC) item. Whether you attach it to your keychain, use it as a zipper pull, or simply carry it in its leather pouch, this tool is always at hand for spontaneous measurement tasks. Its sleek, minimalistic design complements its functionality, adding a touch of elegance to your daily gear.

Interestingly, this slide rule isn’t just a precision tool; it’s also a delightful fidget toy. The smooth, rhythmic rotation of the rule, paired with subtle clicks and vibrations, offers a satisfying sensory experience. Much like a spinning top, it provides a calm, meditative activity that can help relieve stress during work or study sessions. This dual functionality as both a tool and a fidget toy makes it an excellent companion for those who enjoy practical, yet playful gadgets.

The TITANER Mini Titanium Curve Measure Slide Rule comes in a few variants. Enthusiasts can either grab the all-titanium variant (which has a slightly higher price owing to the material and manufacturing), or buy a slide rule with an inner ring made of brass (this variant’s distinct dual-color aesthetic has it standing out from the rest). The slide rule comes with a 10-cm circumference, although you can upgrade to a larger version with a 5-inch circumference. All variants rely on a precisely machined structure with an anti-slip texture on the outside, and spring-loaded ceramic beads on the inside that enable the rolling and clicking function.

A masterclass in design, the TITANER Mini Titanium Curve Measure Slide Rule merges functionality with thoughtful engineering. It’s an EDC tool that excels in precision, portability, and durability, while also serving as a unique conversation piece while in use or even worn around your neck as a mark of your creatively aligned profession (sort of like how architects love to show off their mechanical pencils, or fashion designers with their measuring tape always handy). Whether you’re using it to measure unconventional surfaces or simply spinning it between your fingers for a moment of relaxation, this ruler proves that the simplest tools can often be the most innovative.

Breaking Barriers: How Apple’s AirPods 4 Bring Active Noise Cancelation to Open-Ear Earbuds

There are moments when technology integrates so seamlessly into our lives that it feels like an extension of ourselves. That’s the sensation I experienced with Apple’s new AirPods 4, featuring Active Noise Cancelation (ANC). Recently, I had the privilege of delving into the creation of these groundbreaking earbuds with two of the minds behind them: Kate Bergeron, Apple’s Vice President of Hardware Engineering, and Eric Treski, Director of AirPods Product Marketing. Their insights revealed the technical marvels of the AirPods 4 and the dedication and innovation that went into bringing ANC to an open-ear design—a feat many thought impossible.

Designer: Apple

Innovation Sparked by a Global Pandemic

The journey to integrate ANC into a non-ear-tip design was anything but straightforward. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a time fraught with challenges, Apple’s engineering team saw an opportunity to innovate.

“Kind of like right in the middle of COVID, in a very small group, we had a demo put together by our fabulous acoustic engineers who basically tried to work ANC into a non-occluding form factor,” Kate recounted. “Of course, it wasn’t perfect because it was a little while ago, but we said, hey, we think that there’s something here and we should really work on this.”

This account highlights the team’s resilience and creativity. Despite global disruptions, they pushed forward, laying the groundwork for what would become the AirPods 4.

Designing for Universality: The Pursuit of the Perfect Fit

Apple has always focused on creating products that are aesthetically pleasing and universally accessible. With the AirPods 4, this concept takes center stage. The earbuds might look familiar at first glance, maintaining the iconic stem design that has become synonymous with Apple’s audio products. However, the fundamental transformation lies in the details—a culmination of years of ergonomic research and user feedback.

Apple AirPods 4 + ANC

“We began to educate ourselves and figure out what it is about fit and comfort that really matters to people,” Kate shared. “How do we get more conversant in the physiology and try to figure out what the best fit for as many people as possible can be?”

Creating a non-ear-tip form factor presented unique challenges. “We’re trying to make AirPods stay in your ears, and we don’t have the advantage of the compliance of the tip to help us out,” she explained. The team developed a comprehensive database of ear shapes from around the world, allowing them to model and test various designs virtually before creating physical prototypes.

Kate’s team delivered a design that feels light and natural in the ear. In my own experience, the AirPods 4 felt almost weightless. The smooth contours of the earbuds nestled comfortably in my ears, and I could wear them for hours without any discomfort. During two international trips to Berlin and London, I swapped between the AirPods 4 and the AirPods Pro 2. Despite their completely different designs, I found the comfort and fit nearly identical. Eliminating the ear tip enhances comfort and simplifies the user experience—no more fumbling with different sizes or worrying about replacements.

The Art of Minimalism: Less Is More

The AirPods 4 embody Apple’s mastery of minimalist design. The absence of ear tips allowed the team to create a smaller, more streamlined case.

“Without having to accommodate an ear tip in the width of the case, we’re able to shrink it right down,” Kate noted. “It’s our smallest case.” Indeed, the case is remarkably compact—small enough to fit comfortably in the tiny coin pocket of your jeans.

The tactile experience has been carefully considered. The hinge mechanism provides just the right amount of resistance, and the magnetic closure offers a satisfying click. Every detail contributes to an effortless user experience.

Another subtle yet impactful change is the removal of the physical pairing button. Eric demonstrated the new pairing method, explaining how tapping the case twice uses the accelerometer inside to sense vibration, simplifying the process.

Engineering the Impossible: ANC Without Ear Tips

One of the most groundbreaking aspects of the AirPods 4 is the integration of Active Noise Cancelation in a non-ear-tip design. Traditional ANC relies heavily on passive noise isolation provided by ear tips, so the team had to rethink the entire approach.

The H2 chip became essential to unlocking this performance. With its more power-efficient design, Apple was able to shrink the size of the components while maintaining the level of ANC that users expect.

They meticulously arranged the components to maximize sound quality and ANC effectiveness. “We incorporated advanced microphones both inside and outside the earbud,” Kate explained. “Adjacent to the driver is a reference microphone, which allows us to continually monitor the sound in your ear. Then, outside your ear, we use an additional microphone to monitor the outside world.”

Eric added, “It’s extremely important that the adaptive EQ mic is working very fast—up to 200 times a second—to ensure that it’s constantly monitoring what you’re hearing, both from a noise-canceling perspective and an audio quality perspective.”

The precision required for this process is astounding. Without the seal of an ear tip, external noises can easily seep in. The H2 chip’s computational power enables real-time adjustments, ensuring the ANC remains effective even as the earbuds shift slightly during movement.

Adaptive EQ, Audio Quality, and Hearing Protection

Beyond noise cancelation, the AirPods 4 delivers an impressive audio experience through adaptive EQ, which fine-tunes the sound to suit your environment and the shape of your ear. “Every ear is unique, and so is every listening situation,” Eric explained. “Our goal was to provide consistent, high-quality audio no matter the circumstances.” Whether listening to classical music or country, the clarity and richness of the sound are immediately noticeable. The bass is full without overpowering, while the treble remains crisp and clear. The adaptive EQ enhances the nuances of each track, providing an immersive listening experience.

The H2 chip plays a crucial role in this, enabling real-time processing of audio signals and allowing the earbuds to adjust frequencies dynamically. “The H2 chip enables us to maintain this level of precision,” Kate shared, highlighting how it keeps audio quality consistent across various environments.

One key advantage of this open-ear design is the ability to enjoy audio at lower volumes, thanks to effective noise cancelation. By reducing the need to increase the volume in noisy environments, the AirPods 4 helps protect hearing over time, making them a great option for users who want to preserve their hearing without compromising on sound quality or comfort.

Seamless Integration: The Magic of Connectivity

A defining aspect of any Apple product is how seamlessly it integrates within the ecosystem. The AirPods 4 enhance this experience. Switching between my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook was incredibly fast—almost imperceptible.

According to Eric, the goal was for the AirPods 4 to be something you don’t have to think about—the experience should just work, whether you’re on a call, watching a video, or switching between devices.

The seamless handoff is powered by iCloud syncing and the advanced capabilities of the H2 chip. Apple wants this process to feel completely natural, with all the complex technology hidden behind the scenes.

During our conversation, an analogy that came to mind was comparing seamless connectivity to shifting gears on a high-performance car. “To me, this is as seamless as shifting gears on a Porsche,” I said. It’s just like that dual-clutch—it’s so seamless.”

Navigating Limitations: Transparency and User Trust

While the AirPods 4 offer impressive features, Apple is transparent about their limitations. Although the open-ear design can’t match the noise isolation of in-ear or over-ear models, the AirPods 4 were optimized to deliver the best performance possible given the constraints.

This honest approach fosters trust between the company and its users. Apple remains committed to ensuring that user satisfaction remains the top priority.

Final Thoughts

The AirPods 4 with ANC represents a significant advancement in personal audio, showcasing Apple’s dedication to thoughtful design, user well-being, and seamless integration. Apple has set a new standard by overcoming the challenges of incorporating advanced features into a minimalist and comfortable form factor.

For users seeking convenience, comfort, and effective noise cancelation, the AirPods 4 is remarkable. They may not replace specialized equipment for audiophiles or professionals, but they excel as daily companions that enrich our lives in meaningful ways.

As someone who values technology and simplicity, I find the AirPods 4 perfectly incorporates these principles. From morning podcasts to evening music sessions, they have become indispensable. The comfortable design allows me to wear them for extended periods, and the intelligent features keep me connected without feeling tethered.

I was particularly impressed by their everyday convenience. “I absolutely love this after testing many other products,” I shared with Eric and Kate. Being able to take them out, use them effortlessly, and not have to fumble—that’s an everyday luxury.

As technology evolves, products like the AirPods 4 set the benchmark for what is possible when design and innovation work together. Bringing Active Noise Cancelation to an open-ear earbud is a significant leap forward, redefining expectations and opening new possibilities.

Ultra-compact Tactical Titanium EDC packs 12 Different Tools in the size of an AirPods Case

We’ve seen carabiner clips with fold-out knives or screwdrivers before, but there’s something special about the Multi-Kit. Firstly, it isn’t a traditional carabiner, and secondly, it does a little more than integrate just a fold-out knife or screwdriver. In fact, it integrates a whopping 12 tools into its tiny form that’s roughly the size of an AirPods case. This Swiss Army Knife from an alternate reality has all the tools you need to disassemble stuff, repair objects, go camping, and even defend yourself in an emergency. Moreover, it’s made from Grade 5 Titanium, every EDC lover’s material of choice, making it not just incredibly robust and reliable, but also corrosion-proof and lightweight, at just 29.8 grams… that’s lighter than an AirPods case too!

Designer: EckDesign

The overall silhouette of the Multi-Kit is defined by the fact that it’s a carabiner. It comes with a hollow cutout in the center, sporting different tools across its periphery. The fact that it’s a carabiner matters probably the most here, given the entire form follows function philosophy – but the Multi-Kit isn’t your average carabiner. Rather than having a flexible arm, it sports a bolt-style mechanism with a spring-loaded bolt that’s much more secure, eliminating any accidental opening. This allows you to affix the Multi-Kit to your backpack or belt loop, or even slide a couple of keyrings in for a more consolidated EDC experience.

Move past the carabiner and you get to the Multi-Kit’s ‘meat’, its array of tools carefully integrated into the design. First, you’ve got the fold-out tools like the tiny D2 knife and the file for sanding down objects, designed to fold away into the body of the Multi-Kit when not in use. The small blade is diminutive but deadly, sporting a drop-point edge that’s perfect for cutting, piercing, and even scraping. For abrasive work, the file works remarkably well, with its top functioning as a pry bar and flathead screwdriver too. However, if you want to work with Philips-heads or any other kinds of screws, the Multi-Kit houses a hex-bit in a slot in its body. Held in place via magnets, the bit docks in when not in use, and can be pulled out and fixed into the front, transforming the multitool into a proper flat-grip driver that’s easy to twist.

The rest of the Multi-Kit’s tools are cleverly integrated into its body design. You’ve got a thick flathead screwdriver for larger, more stubborn screws, two hex wrenches (in 4mm and 6mm standard sizes), as well as a bottle opener for cracking open a cold one while you sweat away working on your DIY project or fixing up some tech or appliance.

Hiding away in plain sight is the Multi-Kit’s final tool, a tungsten-tip glass breaker that shatters even reinforced glass with a single strike. Perfect for exiting a car in an emergency (or breaking through the glass box to access a fire extinguisher), the tungsten top sits quietly in the bottom of the multitool’s design, and can be used simply by striking the tip against any glass with adequate force. Its abrasive properties make it great for etching on glass too, or even using as a glass scorer/cutter although that’s an art you’ll need to master.

Finally, the multitool packs a lanyard hole for stringing a lanyard or paracord grip through (either for style or if you’d rather use the carabiner for holding items instead of being a clip accessory). The titanium body even has tritium slots machined into it, so you can pop tritium capsules into your EDC to make it visible in low-light settings.

Despite its tool-rich design, the Multi-Kit remains remarkably compact. It slips easily into your pocket or clips onto a bag with its built-in carabiner, which doubles as yet another tool, further emphasizing the space-saving nature of the design. A lot of this gets attributed to the use of Grade-5 titanium as a material, one of the strongest-known materials to mankind. This makes the Multi-Kit about as robust as it is compact, and although makers at Eck Design don’t specifically guarantee the Multi-Kit will last forever, they do allude to the fact that it’ll definitely be the one EDC that can take on any activity you throw at it and still survive long enough to become an heirloom.

Designed for versatility, this multitool is perfect for those who love to be prepared without carrying a full toolbox. Whether you’re an outdoors enthusiast, a DIYer, or just someone who likes to have a reliable tool on hand, the Multi-Kit’s 12 functions cover everything from slicing to tightening bolts to providing that all-important bottle opener. It’s the kind of tool that you’ll find yourself reaching for more than you’d expect—if only to appreciate how much they managed to fit into something so small.

Handsome EDC flashlight is compact, powerful, versatile, and is also a power bank

Life is like an adventure. You never know where it takes you so you best be prepared with the right tools to face anything. Everyday Carries have become popular exactly for this reason, making sure you have everything you need for any situation. Of course, not all tools are made equal, and some designs come in small packages at the expense of functionality and usefulness. A small flashlight, for example, might be able to do just one thing, and it won’t last very long on small AAA batteries. There’s no rule that says you have to pick between power and portability, and this very capable flashlight is proof of that. It crams no less than three types of very bright lights and can even function as an emergency power bank, all while sporting a compact palm-sized design that can withstand any weather condition or even an accidental drop in a puddle.

Designer: LOOP GEAR

Click Here to Buy Now: $57 $99 (43% off). Hurry, only 930/1000 left! Raised over $174,000.

EDC flashlights are quickly growing in number, and they’re defined by how small they can be to fit in your pouch or even your pocket. Most of the time, the smaller devices get, the less capable they become, but the LOOP GEAR SK05 is ready to prove them wrong. A small handheld device can function as a floodlight, a spotlight, and even a sidelight with enough brightness to let you safely see in the dark or call for help. And it’s designed to be easy to use with one hand, freeing your other hand to take action when needed.

The LOOP GEAR SK05’s ergonomic design includes grooves to rest your fingers on one side, and a rounded trim edge on the opposite side for your palm, giving you a confident grip whether you hold it with your right or your left hand. The dial ring that sits on the side is the only control you need to operate the flashlight and it’s conveniently always under your thumb, no matter how you hold it. You can easily switch from floodlight to spotlight with a turn of the dial or press the center button to activate the sidelight. There’s also lockout mode so that the flashlight doesn’t turn on accidentally in your pocket or bag and drain the battery or, worse, cause a fire hazard.

Spotlight & Floodlight Fast Switch

Sidelight

With its small size, it’s pretty mind-blowing how bright the SK05 can be. The SK05 Pro floodlight can reach a maximum of 3060 lumens output (2250 lumens for the base SK05), and the maximum beam range for the spotlight is 405 meters (370 meters for the SK05). The sidelight is no slouch either, featuring five modes (Constant Light, Flowing Light, Running Light, Night Light, and Colorful Light) and seven colors (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Cyan, Blue, Purple), and you can even adjust the brightness for each of these. The sidelight can be used not just to illuminate or set the mood but to also call attention in case of an emergency.

Powering the LOOP GEAR SK05 are two rechargeable 18650 batteries, but the EDC flashlight is so robust that it can even work with a single battery thanks to the SK05 Pro’s parallel circuit design. You can also easily pop off the cover and replace the batteries in a flash for continuous use. And when it comes time to charge those batteries, the onboard 20W Type-C charger can fill them up in just two hours. Thanks to that USB-C connection, the SK05 can also function as a 20W power bank, keeping your phone from draining its own battery too quickly.

If its industrial design isn’t enough proof, the LOOP GEAR SK05 is made to withstand extreme weather conditions, especially with its IP68 rating that helps it survive underwater for a while. The EDC flashlight’s versatile design includes a clip for belts and pockets as well as a magnetic tail cap that can attach to the side of cars or any metal surface, freeing your hands to do the work you need to accomplish. And if the $200,000 stretch goal is reached, LOOP GEAR will also make the A03 Sheath for even easier handling as well as protection for the EDC flashlight. With the compact and versatile LOOP GEAR SK05 EDC flashlight, no darkness or emergency will be too tough to handle, bringing not only brightness but even a bit of power to your outdoor and nighttime adventures.

Hands-On with the First FDA-Approved OTC Hearing Aid Software Device: Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 Transform Accessibility

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has officially authorized Apple’s over-the-counter Hearing Aid Feature (HAF), marking a breakthrough for individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss. Designed exclusively for the AirPods Pro 2, this software transforms the popular earbuds into customizable hearing aids. This development comes at a crucial time, as over 30 million American adults report some level of hearing loss, a condition that affects communication, relationships, work, and emotional well-being.

Designer: Apple

With the FDA’s recent approval, Apple’s Hearing Aid Feature allows users to tailor their listening experience without needing a prescription or professional fitting. Users can adjust personalized settings through the software using an iPhone or iPad, which enables them to fine-tune their hearing experience based on their specific needs. By offering this self-fitting functionality, Apple eliminates the need for costly audiologist visits. Instead of relying on traditional hearing aids, which often carry a stigma and high price tag, consumers can now use a product they may already own, making hearing support more accessible, affordable, and discreet.

“Hearing loss is a significant public health issue impacting millions of Americans,” said Dr. Michelle Tarver, acting director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “Today’s marketing authorization of an over-the-counter hearing aid software on a widely used consumer audio product is another step that advances the availability, accessibility, and acceptability of hearing support for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.”

The benefits for consumers are clear. The Hearing Aid Feature uses Apple’s HealthKit data to create a personalized audio profile tailored to the user’s hearing levels. This profile automatically adjusts amplification settings to enhance environmental sounds and media playback. The self-fitting process, which can be done entirely through an iPhone or iPad, is simple and intuitive, giving users complete control over their hearing aid experience. The ability to customize sound directly from a personal device reduces the barriers that often deter people from seeking hearing assistance.

The Hearing Aid Feature’s Core Functionality

This feature is specifically designed for individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss. After completing the hearing test, users receive a customized audio profile that adjusts environmental sounds and media playback to their hearing needs. The feature is not intended for those with severe or profound hearing loss, who will be advised to seek professional care. However, it’s a groundbreaking tool for users with moderate impairment, offering convenient adjustments on-the-go without specialized equipment or professional fitting.

Another key benefit is the feature’s ability to address asymmetric hearing loss. If a user has different levels of impairment in each ear, the software automatically adjusts for each side, ensuring an optimal hearing experience for both ears.

The software was tested in a clinical study with 118 participants who had perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. The results were impressive: individuals who used the self-fitting software experienced similar benefits to those who underwent professional fittings. Tests also showed that the Hearing Aid Feature provided comparable performance in amplifying sounds in the ear canal and improving speech understanding in noisy environments. Notably, no adverse events were reported during the study, further validating the safety and effectiveness of the software.

This FDA approval builds on the agency’s 2022 regulations for over-the-counter hearing aids, which allowed consumers to purchase hearing aids directly from stores or online without needing a medical exam or prescription. Apple’s software-only mobile medical application integrates advanced hearing aid technology into a familiar, everyday product. With the Hearing Aid Feature, users can now fit and adjust their hearing aids independently, avoiding the traditional challenges and costs associated with professional services.

How to Run the Hearing Test

I ran the hearing test within the Settings app during the demo after pairing the AirPods Pro 2. Users can easily access the Hearing Health section by selecting their AirPods Pro in Settings and scrolling down to the Take a Hearing Test option. From there, the on-screen instructions guide users through the process step-by-step.

The test is modeled after clinical hearing assessments, asking users to listen to tones that alternate between the left and right ears. Each tone starts faint and gradually increases in volume. All users need to do is tap the screen whenever they hear a tone. The system leverages active noise cancellation during the test, blocking out external sounds to ensure the results are accurate and unaffected by surrounding noise. Once the test is complete, the results indicate the level of hearing loss, such as mild or moderate, and automatically generate a personalized sound profile.

This profile is used to activate the Hearing Aid Feature, adjusting amplification settings based on the test results. Users can apply this profile to environmental sounds, phone calls, music, and other media, tailoring their experience to suit their hearing needs.

Reaction to the Demo

The process was simple, intuitive, and impressively smooth. As someone who demoed an incomplete version of the test, I found the setup straightforward and user-friendly, even for those without prior experience using hearing aids. The software intelligently adjusted the tones in real-time based on my responses, adapting the volume and frequency dynamically to create an accurate hearing profile.

Despite receiving generalized results indicating moderate hearing loss during the demo, the system gave me a clear understanding of how the Hearing Aid Feature would adjust to the user’s specific needs. Even though the profile was generic, the sound amplification was highly noticeable, even 5-8 feet away from the people speaking in the room. Additionally, the tonality and pitch of voices sounded sharper rather than just louder, offering a refined listening experience rather than a mere increase in volume. The real-time feedback and adaptability of the software reassured me that users could rely on this technology to provide an effective, custom-tailored hearing solution once fully functional.

Media Assist, Health Data Security, and Availability

The Hearing Aid Feature automatically enables Media Assist, which fine-tunes audio for phone calls and media playback, making conversations, music, and videos easier to hear. This feature can benefit even users with minimal hearing loss, as it automatically adjusts to individual needs without manual input.

All hearing test results are securely stored in Apple’s Health app, where users can export them as PDFs to share with healthcare providers. This ensures users have full control over their health data, maintaining privacy and security.

Apple’s FDA-approved Hearing Aid Feature transforms accessibility by integrating advanced hearing technology into a popular consumer device. This innovation reduces the stigma and cost barriers associated with traditional hearing aids, offering millions of users with mild to moderate hearing loss a discreet and more affordable way to manage their hearing health independently.
