Chipolo announces “Perfectly Imperfect” trackers at CES 2024 that are as visually unique as you are

Automation almost always means the death of imperfection. The reason we have robots manufacturing products is because not only is it faster, robots are much more precise than humans, resulting in the kind of consistency we’ve come to expect from the Industrial Age. In a world hyper-focused on sheer perfection, Chipolo is embracing the flawed with its latest release at CES 2024, the limited edition “Perfectly Imperfect” Chipolo CARD Spot, exclusively compatible with the Apple Find My network.

Designer: Chipolo

The brand has launched 10,000 of these unique item trackers, each with its own minor cosmetic imperfection, a bold move that’s more than just a marketing strategy — it’s a statement. Chipolo is challenging the pervasive societal norms dictating that perfection is paramount, suggesting instead that these so-called “defects” are often barely noticeable to others and might be unduly magnified in our own eyes.

Primož Zelenšek, Co-founder, and CEO of Chipolo, expressed his excitement about the launch, stating, “Through the ‘Perfectly Imperfect’ series, we aim to ease lives not just physically through functionality but also mentally, by promoting peace of mind.” This initiative isn’t just about producing unique trackers; it’s about inspiring a change in how people view themselves and their imperfections.

What sets these Chipolo CARD Spot trackers apart is not just their philosophy but also their design. Each tracker features a distinctive blemish on one side and the campaign’s motto, “Perfectly Imperfect,” engraved on the other in a marker-like font developed in collaboration with a female-owned type design studio in Slovenia. This choice in typography reflects the brand’s core values of friendliness and openness and supports the campaign’s message that our imperfections contribute to our uniqueness.

To ensure that this ‘imperfection’ isn’t just a gimmick but is more of a well-rounded message on sustainability, Chipolo has chosen to use plastic with minor imperfections that would typically be discarded, thereby reducing waste and avoiding the creation of additional pollution. This choice underlines Chipolo’s commitment to the environment, ensuring that each tracker is fully functional, with only its exterior bearing the marks of its sustainable journey. It also isn’t the first time Chipolo’s relied on recycled plastic, as the company debuted a series of trackers made from repurposed ocean plastic back in 2020.

Keeping in line with the campaign’s overall message, the company has partnered with The Global Mental Health Peer Network, Hilfsgemeinschaft der Blinden und Sehschwachen Österreichs, and VDC Zasavje, promising to donate $1 for every “Perfectly Imperfect” Chipolo sold. This partnership aims to support the missions of these non-profits, focusing on mental health, support for the blind and visually impaired, and social welfare, respectively.

As these limited edition trackers make their way into pockets and purses worldwide, they carry with them a message of acceptance, sustainability, and community support. Sometimes, it’s about discovering a sense of acceptance and peace within ourselves — and that’s something worth searching for.

Chipolo’s latest tracker is as slim as a credit card, and works seamlessly with Apple’s Find My network

It seems like the Apple AirTag has some catching up. At CES 2022, Chipolo unveiled its latest tracker, the CARD Spot – a ridiculously slim tracker that can slip right into your wallet, and works in tandem with Apple’s Find My network to let you track your belongings on your Apple devices. Measuring a staggering 2.4mm in thickness (0.09 inches for the metric naysayers), the tracker comes with a 2-year battery, IPx5 water resistance, and a loud 105dB alarm that’s enough to alert you of its presence or scare a potential pickpocket away.

In 2021, Chipolo announced the ONE Spot, its first item tracker to be compatible with Apple’s Find My network. The ONE Spot was a circular gadget, roughly the same size as Apple’s own AirTag, with perhaps the only material benefit being its slimness over the slightly chunky AirTag (although that meant not having a replaceable battery). With the CARD Spot, Chipolo is doubling down on this slimness advantage, giving it a significant edge over Apple’s tracking device. The CARD Spot is ridiculously sleek and fits comfortably into your wallet, money clip, or cardholder.

The CARD Spot is currently the sleekest device to boast compatibility with Apple’s Find My feature. It’s small and handy enough to be placed anywhere, and can be located from your Apple device as well as ‘pinged’, allowing the CARD Spot to ring loudly to let you know where it is. At 105 decibels, it’s nearly twice as loud as the AirTag, and even comes with the ‘Left Behind’ feature that instantly notifies you if you accidentally leave behind your wallet, or if it goes out of your phone’s range, as well as an ‘Anti Stalking’ feature that prevents anyone from planting a tracking device on you or your belongings.

Its slim design presents one caveat. Unlike the AirTag that has a replaceable battery, the CARD Spot’s battery is sealed right into the device and can’t be periodically swapped out. However, Chipolo mentions that its tracking device will work comfortably for two full years out of the box, and is even committed to accepting your old discharged CARD Spot in exchange for a 50% discount on a new one. Meanwhile, Chipolo will ensure that the old tracker is recycled to the best of its ability. (It’s comforting to see the company being this conscious about its e-waste. Chipolo even announced a series of trackers made from recycled ocean plastic in 2020)

The CARD Spot is available for pre-order on Chipolo’s website. It comes in just black for now, and costs $35 for a single tracker or $60 for a set of two.

The world’s first item-tracker made from recycled ocean-plastic

The choice of material for Chipolo’s latest Ocean Series trackers is quite poetic if you ask me. The trackers help you keep track of your personal belongings – things of value to you – but ironically or poetically enough, they’re made from the things you don’t consider valuable… single-use plastics.

Through a strategic partnership with Oceanworks.co to source ocean-based plastic waste, the Chipolo ONE Ocean tracking device comes made with a recycled-plastic body. Fishing nets, trawls, and ropes floating in the sea are collected in the shallow areas of the ocean near the shoreline, before being cleaned, treated, and turned into polypropylene plastic pellets. These pellets are the primary raw material used to create the outer body of Chipolo’s tracking device. While it isn’t much plastic to begin with (each tracking chip is the size of a coin), Chipolo is committed to helping reduce plastic waste in the ocean… in fact, they’re even committing to pledge $1 from the profits of each Chipolo ONE Ocean sold towards the non-profit organization Oceanic Global to support ocean clean-up efforts.

The Chipolo ONE Ocean joins its popular line of tracking devices, helping you keep track of your belongings from your keys to your wallet, or even your backpack. Just attach your Chipolo to any item you want to track and connect it with the Chipolo app on your iPhone or Android phone. You can ring the tracking device from the Chipolo App to find them, or see its last known location on a map, if they’re out of the Bluetooth range. The devices are backward-compatible too, and you can double press your Chipolo device to help locate your connected smartphone if you can’t find it. Each Chipolo ONE Ocean comes powered by a CR2032 coin battery, giving it a battery life of up to 2 years.
