Minimalist & Modern Church In China Looks Like An Intricate Origami Layered Construction

Dubbed the Chamber Church, this stunning church by German-Chinese architecture practice Büro Ziyu Zhuang has us completely mesmerized! Located in Qingdao, China, the church features an imposing tower and expansive walls built using dozens of spaced-out aluminum ribs. The church is designed as a part of the Aduo town project in the Qingdao Zangma Mountain Tourism Resort. The use of aluminum ribs creates an alluring layered approach that gives the structure a weightless and lithe appeal.

The Chamber Church is situated at the end of a public plaza, allowing it to be well-connected with other amenities. According to the architects, the structure harmoniously merges a religious experience with a secular attitude. They say that the church “aims to create a spatial container that both respects the past and looks towards the future.” The church is reminiscent of the classical churches we are accustomed to. This is evident in the bell tower with its spire and rose window, repeating interior arches, and the classic basilica layout. However, by utilizing vertical ribs, these traditional elements were given a rather simple and modern form.

“To create a modern icon, we needed to create a pure shape that still evokes the archetype of a church,” said Büro Ziyu Zhuang. “Therefore, during the design process, we integrated different vernacular facade images of traditional churches. The derived base volume is then expressed through a series of slices.”

An interesting manmade lake surrounds the building, not only providing it with privacy but also allowing the shapes of the church to be beautifully reflected in the water. The stairs that lead from the plaza to the entrance are surrounded by terraced water, which further creates a surreal connection to nature. In fact, because of the church’s east-to-west orientation, it looks as if it is raised above the plaza.

The interior is quite open and expansive, with a swooping and arched sensation to it. Bands of light flood into the modern and minimalist interior. Sheets of glass-reinforced gypsum were utilized to create this cave-like feel. The gentle curves and fluid ambiance of the interiors playfully contrast against the geometric and sturdy exterior.

The red rock and glass construction of this African Museum feels almost Martian!

A combination of modern and traditional, of indigenous and industrial, the restoration of the Old Palapye Museum truly feels otherworldly. Set in the heritage site of Palapye in Botswana, the building’s setting is highly reminiscent of a Martian landscape, surrounded by red soil and rocks. Amidst this lie the ruins of a burnt brick church built in 1891, standing proudly within perimeters of a rich historic site of the 19th century capital of the Bangwato tribe. Still holding immense cultural relevance, the building’s restoration (and subsequent conversion into a museum) aims at bringing attention back to the rich traditions and the ways of the Bangwato people.

Beullah Serema’s design builds on the ruins of the Palapye church, supporting it, rather than replacing it. The stunning contrast between the burnt brick and the glass highlights the contrast between the old and the new, while giving equal emphasis to both. Plus, the combination of materials and styles almost makes me wonder if colonies on the red planet will echo a similar architectural aesthetic!

The Old Palapye Museum is a winner of the A’ Design Award for the year 2019.

Gotta Hymn ’em all!

That’s one interesting Poke-stop! I mean chapel! I feel like I’ve gone on a pilgrimage to catch Pokemon given that each PokeStop is a religious building/monument. I’ve however noticed that there’s this signature style to churches, cathedrals, etc. They were probably made highly ornate, back in the day as an appeasement to the gods… but our sense of aesthetics has surely evolved in past few centuries, has it not? The Aurelios Chapel shows that a religious monument can look breath-taking without all the intricate marble carving and stained glass. It uses a beautiful blend of wood and stone with just a hint of marble to give the chapel an auspicious aura. I have to say that I absolutely love the way the skylight channels the rays of the sun inwards to make it look like a halo around the idol. This also gives the chapel an unusually eye-catching outer silhouette. I’d totally drop by everyday to get my share of blessings and Pokeballs!

Resurrection of another kind

Hey… The father, son, and holy ghost need an upgrade too. Neo-Gothic architecture can get on your nerves after two millennia. WVA Architects (the guys who made this) gave the church a much needed revisit with a very Frank Lloyd Wright-ish vibe. Designed on a waterfront, the Zhangjiagang church just epitomizes “pristine”. The holy trinity is reinforced by the three structures/buildings within the church grounds.

All in all, I really like the modern reimagination. The new steeple looks really iconic. The modernized stained glass art couldn’t be more appropriate! A perfect church for the second coming, don’t you think?!
