Satechi’s cool new USB Hub gives you front-access to all the important ports on your 2021 Apple iMac

The iMac’s 11mm thick design, unfortunately, means it isn’t really port-friendly (even the LAN port had to be relocated to the charging brick), although Satechi has a solution. The newly debuted USB-C clamp hub for the 2021 M1 iMac puts 6 different ports right where you need them. From USB hubs to even card readers, Satechi’s nifty little multiport hub has it all, and it conveniently blends right into the iMac’s form factor with a design language that matches the all-in-one computer perfectly!

At a price of $54.99 (which shouldn’t seem much if you already shelled out the cash for an M1 iMac), Satechi’s USB-C clamp hub puts all the essential ports at your fingertips. It plugs into one of the USB-C ports at the back and grips onto the iMac using a rotating clamp. The hub comes with 3 USB-A ports, 2 card readers, and one USB-C port on the front, and has data transfer speeds of up to 5Gb/s for the USB ports and 104Mb/s for the card readers. The Satechi USB-C clamp hub ships in September and comes with an all-aluminum body, although Satechi hasn’t really indicated whether they’re offering the hubs in the same color schemes as the iMacs.

A perfect ‘iMac’cessory

satechi_imac_clamp_1

The way the iMac Clamp Hub sits on the iMac is nothing short of fascinating. It makes use of a series of small slots running around the base (the speaker grill) to dock itself in a rather beautiful manner, flushing perfectly with the surface of the iMac’s front, while giving you the one thing Apple couldn’t. Accessibility.

Using a Type-C jack, the iMac Clamp Hub connects to your desktop, instantly giving you 3 USB ports, a Type C port, and two card reader slots (an absolute blessing if you use your iMac for photography post-processing). The beauty of the Clamp Hub is the fact that it not only gives you more ports, it gives you more ports exactly where you need them, so you’re not fumbling around to locate them on the back of the iMac. Satechi even went to lengths to ensure that the hub matched the iMac perfectly in color, material, and finish, creating products that bring true value to the users, while looking their part. Mr. Cook, do take note.

The jaws of light

c_lamp_1

In the spirit of giving mundane objects a new avatar, designer Rashmeet Saggu is back with her design, the C-lamp. Following the trend she set with her Chemistry Lamps, the C-lamp makes use of a common workshop tool the c-clamp. Adding an incandescent bulb precariously between the two jaws, it looks like the lightbulb’s been held firmly in place. Just don’t crank that handle too far!

Lamp, meet Clamp…

peliclamp_1

The Peliclamp looks a lot like a futuristic, minimalist alien. It latches on to things of intrigue and observes it from various angles with its slender, flexible goose-neck.

The designers at Canada based Gagan Studios really teach us a lesson in minimalism and good design with the Peliclamp. The lamp brilliantly executes its functions. The materials used for it allow it to achieve utmost minimalism. An extra bonus point for the leather branding on the clip, giving it a certain pizazz!

Introducing, the cLamp

This clever lamp design has a subtle vintage vibe thanks to its unique base composed of two clamps styled after classic clips of the past. Together, they hold and support the shade. To adjust the height and direction of the light, simply unclamp the shade and adjust!

Clamping The Wood For Furniture

It started off as a project exploring the possible ways of using clamps, and soon the Holdfast assignment stumbled into this eclectic range of exciting furniture. The idea was to employ clamps as tools as well as fasteners and are fashioned to reflect simplicity. They are based on the holdfast clamping system that holds materials to the surface of a workbench.

Samuel explains, “The components are manufactured using a computer controlled wire bending device. The components are then inserted into a through hole and wedged under the material they are supporting, creating tension in the vertical leg and in turn creating a strong stiff supporting structure for shelves as well as side tables, stools and other occasional home furnishings.”

I find it a fascinating new way to create furniture, a wonderful blend of metal and wood.
