This Biochemical Food Lid changes color to tell you when your refrigerated food is about to go bad

Ever found yourself tossing out perfectly good food just because the expiration date on the package said so? Well, Kimia Amir-Moazami, a UDK Berlin graduate, has an awesome solution for that – the Vorkoster Lid. This cool 3D-printed lid is here to put an end to unnecessary food waste by giving you a heads-up on whether your food is still good, without relying solely on those conventional expiry dates.

Designer: Kimia Amir Moazami

So, the Vorkoster Lid is not your average lid – it’s got a pH-sensitive foil in the middle that can sniff out if your meat or fish is starting to turn bad. When these foods get spoiled, they release ammonia gas, and this clever foil, made from algae and coated in a special dye, changes color from light green to bright purple. It’s like a neon sign for your food – “Eat me now!” or “Better find something else.”

Kimia makes a valid point about the confusion surrounding expiration dates contributing significantly to food wastage. The Vorkoster Lid aims to revolutionize this by tapping into our natural senses, similar to recognizing the browning of a banana peel or the smell of sour milk, guiding us to make informed decisions. It acts as the superhero of your fridge, ensuring nothing unnecessarily goes to waste. Kimia’s dislike for standardized expiry dates is well-founded, acknowledging that factors like cooling interruptions during food transport and production can hamper the shelf life. The Vorkoster Lid, armed with pH functionality, responds directly to a food item’s freshness regardless of its origin or packaging, challenging the dominance of one-size-fits-all expiration dates. It’s a rebellious solution to a common problem.

The Vorkoster Lid is a chameleon, if I may say. It is designed to cover any type of tub or bowl, ensuring flexibility and compatibility with various containers. Its versatility allows consumers to use it across different types of packaging, serving as a reminder to consume that deliciousness before it turns into science experiment leftovers.

Amir-Moazami drew inspiration from the common practice of using a plate to cover food in the fridge, creating a design that fits any bowl or container. The star of the show is the pH-reactive film that takes the guesswork out of checking your food’s freshness. First shown off in 2021, the Vorkoster Lid made its mark at Dutch Design Week. Amir-Moazami anticipates that the Vorkoster Lid could hit shelves within the next two years, following thorough testing to ensure flawless functionality.

With food waste being such a burgeoning problem (and a leading cause of carbon emissions), the Vorkoster Lid is like a breath of fresh air – or should we say, a bite of fresh food. It’s not just a lid; it’s a game-changer. By offering a visual and analog reminder of a food item’s freshness, this 3D-printed wonder might just be the hero we need to kick food waste to the curb and savor every last bite.

This beautiful food container lets you use the lid as a plate without feeling awkward

It’s not unusual for people to cook more food than they can finish in one sitting. That’s especially true for single-person households that have to save money by having leftovers they can eat the next day or so. Storage for these leftovers, however, sometimes becomes just a second thought, at least until you stare at your fridge or start preparing your meal using them. Food storage isn’t just about keeping food fresh and edible, though that is definitely a primary concern. Keeping them presentable is also a key factor that could affect your appetite, and this “two-way” container design concept helps store food the way you would eat them on a plate by officially making the dish cap serve as a plate as well.

Designer: Haechan Ryu

It might sound strange at first, but it’s actually not uncommon for people to use a food container’s lid as an ad hoc plate, both for reheating food as well as eating from it. This often happens when you store food in a deep dish, like a bowl, and then have to transfer it to a plate for serving. The back-and-forth moving of food from different containers and plates not only involves more work but also risks losing some of the flavors in the process.

Roll is an attempt to preserve not only the flavors of food but also their presentation. It eschews the traditional square or rectangular shape of food containers in favor of something round. Admittedly, it might not be the most space-efficient shape, especially when you’re stocking a lot of food in the fridge. It is, however, more presentable and visually interesting, and the single-person households these containers are designed for usually don’t store as much food as large families anyway.

What makes Roll different from bowl food containers (which do exist, of course) is that it wholeheartedly embraces the culture of using the lid or dish cap as a plate. That’s why the cap itself was made to look presentable, using soft and clean tones like ivory, sky blue, and terracotta. The idea is that you set the freshly cooked food on the lid itself and then later just cover it with the glass bowl when it’s time to put it away. The next time you want to eat it, you don’t have to rearrange the food again to make it presentable. Simply take off the cover and dig in!

Roll takes the food container concept upside-down, literally, by making it usable, whether as a bowl with a round lid or a plate with a bowl cover. It definitely saves a bit of work and time and helps keep even leftovers looking scrumptious, something that you might have sorely missed if you’ve been living by yourself for a long time.

Smart vacuum food preserver increases your food’s shelf life by 2x and even reminds you before it spoils

Almost a billion tonnes of food was wasted in just 2019. More than 60% of that was in households. This wastage is a massive problem for humanity, given how the distribution of food is skewed across different economic strata, cultures, and countries… but it’s also a problem for the planet, because we’re exhausting our environment’s ability to produce, but aren’t consuming it all. Aurora hopes to change that.

Food spoilage has a pretty simple reason. Air. Microbes in the air get to your food. Cool the air and the microbes become slow and sluggish, so your food lasts longer (your refrigerator does this). Remove the air and it has sort of the same effect too. Less air means fewer microbes, which automatically makes your food last longer. That’s where Aurora comes in.

Designed to be the world’s first vacuum sealer with a state-of-the-art UV-C sterilization mechanism built in, Aurora practically doubles your food’s shelf life (an increase of 97%, to be precise).

It comes with a set of reusable containers that you can keep food in (these containers slide right into the fridge for easy storage), and the Aurora device even tracks what’s in the container by asking you to provide information, which gets added to the Aurora’s database. The food is stored in an air-locked vacuum container and is UV sterilized so that it lasts nearly twice as long as it should.

Depending on whether you’ve got meat, fruits, veggies, dairy, or bakery inside, the Aurora will even ping you just before your food’s about to spoil, not only prolonging its lifespan but also eliminating chances of wastage.

Aurora combines smart tech with intuitive design to ensure your food lasts long and doesn’t end up in the trash ‘because you forgot it in the back of the fridge’. Just place your food items in the container and secure the lid before sliding the container into Aurora. Once the container’s placed inside, Aurora asks you what’s inside the container, so it can digitally tag the container for later, reminding you when your food begins spoiling.

It then sucks all the air out, while using UV rays to kill any germs that may still remain inside. The process takes all of 30 seconds, but can increase the self life of meat by 33%, or fruits by as much as 141%. This means less wastage, but it also ensures you spend less money (as much as $1800 a year!) replenishing the fridge because stuff you bought got spoilt. It also ensures you eat healthy instead of just ordering takeout by reminding you that there are veggies and meat in the fridge! Pretty neat, eh?

This compact food pod keeps your meal at its perfect temperature anywhere you go

Whether we plan on eating at the office, having a meal outdoors, or sharing food at a friend’s house, we’ve all come across the joys and sorrows of moving food from one place to another. Extra care has to be taken that the food doesn’t spoil while also retaining its ideal temperature, be it hot or cold. Spilling food, especially sauces, is a huge disaster, and it happens too often to be called an accident. Containers that can prevent all these mishaps from happening do exist, but, more often than not, you pay for that with their bulky and heavy bodies. What should be an enjoyable meal can turn into a hellish preparation, which is why The Pod almost feels like a miracle, carefully carrying your favorite food inside, ready to be enjoyed at its best, anytime.

It might still have a stigma of being a kid’s school accessory, but lunch boxes have become an adulting thing, too, especially when it means being able to eat healthy and save money. They also come in different designs, shapes, and functions, with some simply holding food while others can also keep them hot or cold for a little while. Some also have different compartments for different kinds of food, but mixing foods that have different temperatures often results in soggy, unappetizing meals when it’s finally time to take them.

The Pod solves all these problems in a form that’s no larger than an iPad. Despite its compact size, it can hold around 1,500ml of food without spilling them. Better yet, you can put different foods in different containers, and they each keep to themselves without mixing smells, temperatures, and tastes. Say goodbye to soggy noodles, cold soup, melted ice, and spilled sauces, all thanks to this innovative thermal lunch box with a minimalist style that you can match to your personal tastes.

The secret to the Pod can be found in its two main parts. The Pod itself is a flask that uses 316 medical-grade stainless steel and a Japanese-inspired five-layer composition that keeps hot food hot and cold food cold for hours. This leak-proof container has a 13cm diameter opening that is equivalent to a typical soup bowl, making it convenient to scoop out your meal or enjoy it directly from the flask.

An equally important part of the Pod is the FDA-approved and BPA/BPS-free Silicone Container that literally adds another layer to your meal-to-go. In addition to being a place to put your food in, the container itself can be safely placed inside microwaves and freezers to prepare your food before you jet. Of course, it’s also dishwasher safe, so cleaning the silicone bowl shouldn’t be yet another cause of stress.

Just as bringing your own healthy meal is a lifestyle choice, the Omi Pod can also be a personal expression. In addition to your choice of pastel color, you can also swap out the silicone strap with an eye-catching signature rainbow design to match your style. Starting at just $68, this compact and stylish food pod will keep your favorite food at its best, removing all the prep worry and letting you enjoy that scrumptious meal just the way you like it, even when you’re not at home.

Eco-friendly food container gives a playful moment to picky eaters

One of the most common problems that parents of young children face is to make their kids finish their food, especially if it’s something they don’t like. They employ a lot of tricks and rewards just to get their kids to eat their veggies but they don’t always get results. Some kids do grow out of picky eating while some carry this habit over into adulthood. Parents and guardians do need all the help they can and sometimes, it can come in the actual containers that the food are placed in.

Designer: Wonjun Jo

At first glance, this product concept to help kids eat and finish their food seems to have no connection to picky eating. Float looks like regular food storage that kids can bring to school but upon closer inspection, it is a bit more interesting. It is made from sustainable materials with the body itself and the spork that comes with it made from CXP or Cellulose X-linked Polymer. The cap or cover is made from Polypropylene while the ring is from silicone. The entire thing consists of the main container, a side dish tray, and a spork (spoon and fork in one, in case you didn’t know what that is).

The shape of the container is inspired by a ship and that’s where the helping picky eaters comes in. Before starting to eat, parents are encouraged to talk to their kids about the perils of leftover food. After eating, you can then float the container in water and depending on how much leftover food is there inside, the ship will lose its balance and sink or if they finished everything, it will float. This gives a bit of interactivity in trying to convince kids to eat all of their food.

Not being a parent, I’m really not sure if this will actually convince kids to eat food that they may not always like. If your kid is into nautical things, they might have fun in assembling and disassembling the container and may want to see the “ship” float and therefore finish their food. At the very least, you get an eco-friendly food container that they can use for school or even at home.

Silicone finger grips in this snack box ensures your kids can eat without a mess!

Monchi is a compressible snack box with a silicone lid that comes with integrated finger grips for kids to eat with their hands without making a mess.

There are only two types of people in the world: the ones who lick their fingers after a meal, and the ones who look for the nearest sink. While I fall into the latter category, the urge to eat with my hands is real. Finger foods like cookies and fries have always been a crowd favorite, but they’re messy too.

Monchi, a hygienic silicone-based snack box, developed by A Nus Design Studio features built-in finger grips so you can eat with your hands without the mess.

Tailored for children aged three and up, Monchi is as parent-friendly as it is kid-friendly. Featuring a flexible, silicone lid, the integrated finger grips stretch to fit hands and fingers of all sizes.

Just beneath the silicone lid, Monchi has a leak-proof and airtight food container that holds snack-sized items for kids to enjoy anywhere. From picnics to school lunches, Monchi packs some fun into eating so kids will never skip their veggies.

Once snack time is over, Monchi’s silicone build allows for easy cleanup. Compressible by design, the food container can shrink in size to fit into small storage spaces, even your front pocket.

The finger-grip lid allows users to slip their fingers into each slot, allowing free range of motion to pick up food items inside the container. Constructed from food-grade silicone and polypropylene plastic, Monchi is BPA-free and made from materials that are safe for kids of all ages to be around.

Designer: A Nus Design Studio

Even below the lid, Monchi’s design is fun for kids to play with.

Following an involved ideation process, Monchi reached its final form.

This food storage concept features an intuitive control design so we can always keep our leftovers!

ODNY.BOX is a food storage concept with an intuitive control dial and a minimal aesthetic for users to store any type of leftover, from hot baked cookies to cold Greek yogurt.

What would life be like without leftovers? There’d be no post-Thanksgiving triple-decker sandwiches, no cold pizza, sadly baked ziti for breakfast would have to go too, and no more half-soggy, half-crunchy nachos. In a few words, life would be a slow death without leftovers.

Okay maybe not, but I’d need a second to bounce back. Outfitted with an intuitive layout and glossy aesthetic, ODNY.BOX is a food storage concept from Yoonji Park designed so we’ll never have to consider what life would be like without leftovers.

Inspired by the bulbous shape that water makes when it drops on flat surfaces, the glass lid of ODNY.BOX comes together as half of a globe and almost curls under the platform where food is kept to ensure sealed storage. The seasons have an effect not only on the food we eat but also on how that food is kept for tomorrow. During the winter months, the hot food we order or cook at home is subject to cold temperatures, while during the warmer months, perishables like produce are the first to go bad.

Park aimed to build ODNY.BOX with an intuitive control panel so that a plate of lasagna could be just as easily stored as a bowl of fresh fruit. Comprising just one single dial, the control on ODNY.BOX gives you three options for storage: room temperature, cool, and warm. When users would like to store food items like bananas or breakfast croissants, turning the dial to its room temperature setting would suffice. Then, when a bowl of ice cream or a side of french fries needs some storage, users can adjust the dial to its cold or hot settings, respectively.

The inner platform where food is stored also detaches from the base to function as a free tray for transporting plates of food or just keeping dishes steady on a flat surface. The overall design of ODNY.BOX is clean and minimal, considering even a micro organizer for the product’s wire to tuck into and stay out of the way.

These sustainable single-use takeout containers made from wheat husk are fully compostable!

These days, we’re ordering takeout and a lot of it. Part convenience, part laziness, takeout gives some much-needed variety with the monotony of cooking every meal during the pandemic. With this surge in popularity, Forest & Whale, a multidisciplinary design practice that focuses on products, circular systems, and future envisioning, hope to combat single-use plastic’s harmful impact on the environment with Reuse, a single-use food container that can either be composted in cities with available corresponding facilities or eaten.

Gustavo Maggio and Wendy Chua co-founded Forest & Whale as a means to explore the world of design and its relationship with the environment, along with our own human behavior and living experiences. Made from wheat husk for its base and PHA for the lid, Reuse serves as a fully compostable food container that not only amplifies our experience consuming takeout food but creates a conversation around our high-consumption habits and the negative effect they have on our environment. Wheat husk and PHA, a bacteria-based composite that works like a natural plastic derived from organic materials, can both be composted as food waste, without additional industrial-level composting facilities. The usability of Reuse hinges on its simple decomposition and accessible construction processes, appeals for large cities and small towns alike to adopt this form of containing takeout food. Similar to the paper straw revolution we’ve seen come to fruition almost overnight, the takeout industry could quickly adapt to swapping out their plastic containers for biodegradable and compostable ones like Reuse.

While single-use plastic containers are convenient and quick to get rid of, they leave a startling impact on the environment. Accounting for their low-recyclability rate, plastic takeout containers stick around for ages, running off into waterways and polluting the oceans, spreading toxins to wildlife, releasing harmful chemicals and gases into the air we breathe, and generally disrupting our waste management systems. Maggio and Chua of Forest & Whale designed Reuse to take some of the pressure off our planetary responsibility and health. With hopes of entirely replacing single-use plastic containers with compostable and edible takeout bins, Reuse marks the initial steps towards a worthwhile goal.

This vacuum pump merges the functionality of ziplock bags with a hard casing to reduce your leftover food wastage!

Storing leftovers in airtight zip-lock bags is a trick hard to follow. While mastering the dance of rolling your food tight and simultaneously sliding its bag closed might teach you patience, the prospect of leftovers always seems to circle back for seconds, and they’re just aren’t enough bags in the kitchen. Zhuhai Kelitong Electronic Co. Ltd., the company that brought us electric wine openers, has recently been recognized by iF Design for its new set of vacuum-sealed containers and automatic vacuum pump that render zip-lock bags a thing of the past.

Designed to provide food containers with high-vacuum storage to curb bacterial growth, Zhuhai’s vacuum storage system boasts that it can keep your leftovers sealed for three to five times longer than the standard food storage container. The hard plastic containers come with pre-delineated food zones that help users separate their food items and with a vacuum-sealed lid that works as the base for the accompanying pump. Zhuhai designed the vacuum pump to be automatic so that once it’s placed on top of a container’s lid and activated, the pump immediately begins pulling out the excess air inside of the container until it reaches a high-vacuum degree of -0.03 Mpa.

Each food storage container is constructed using FDA-approved Tritan materials, which means that the plastic used is BPA-free and can safely be reheated in microwave ovens. The designers built the food containers to be 70% lighter than common glassware containers so that once the containers have been vacuum-sealed, they can just as easily go into the lunch box and be transported anywhere. Once the container is ready for use again, the lid comes easily apart from the container so that each component can be properly cleaned and prepared for its next use.

Designer: Zhuhai Kelitong Electronic Co. Ltd.

Coming in three parts, each vacuum pump and lid attach to different containers.

Once the vacuum pump is activated, then excess air that could lead to bacterial growth is sucked up from the container.

An automatic vacuum pump works by draining in the container’s excess air until a vacuum degree of -0.03 Mpa is reached.

Each food storage container can be easily disassembled and put back together for cleaning and storing.

Designed to be 70% lighter than average glass food storage containers, these containers from Zhuhai are perfect to bring for lunch.

Make meal prep hassle-free again with this space-saving cutting board!

One of the biggest lifestyle changes for me was meal prep, it eliminates the fuss of deciding what to cook every day and made grocery shopping so much easier. One of the best parts was I didn’t have to order out when I was at work and it made me realize how quickly “But it is just $12!” adds up when you practically do it every other day. Seems like everyone was riding this meal prep wave till we were hit with WFH and that sudden change the pandemic brought on derailed the most disciplined people. For me, I stopped meal prep because I was adjusting to working from home and doing chores at the same time. So I started snacking throughout the day instead of cooking a meal because who wants to clean after a perpetual Monday (that is what it feels like in quarantine)? Enter TidyBoard! It is not wearing a cape but it is here to make your life easier and get your good eating habits back on track!

TidyBoard was designed to encourage healthy eating and turn it into a sustainable lifestyle change instead of a trend (looking at you, juice cleanse!). It streamlines your prep with strategically placed strainers, catches, and containers on the end of the cutting board so there is more to eat and less to clean. It keeps food and scraps separate and allows you to strain hands-free. When you are done with the chopping and cutting, one swipe of your hand will clear it all. TidyBoard is constructed from bamboo which is antibacterial and durable enough to last for years making the wear and tear worth the effort. Bamboo also makes it lightweight and eco-friendly. “The TidyBoard was mindfully influenced by math and physics. Our board is engineered as a lever to stay steady even with a heavy load in the containers,” says the team.

The product is calculatingly made to optimize your counter space and the collapsible containers make it super easy to prep and store. It can hang off the edge of your sink which actually makes you use less of your countertop for prep and you don’t have to worry about losing precious produce or fresh pasta to your sink! The cutting board acts as a lever to help hold the weight of the catch – it can hold up to 9 lbs of food in its container while hanging off your counter (do you even lift?). The BPA-free Food Grade silicone containers are made collapsible to save 50% of drawer/cabinet space which makes it perfect for small kitchens or homes that don’t have a lot of storage. The large catch and containers have volumetric and measuring marks to aid you in your prep so that you are never short on a meal because of wrong calculations! The collapsible strainers are nestled into the end of the board for cleaning or straining hands-free. The kit includes snap-on lids so you can store them in the containers right after prep. The lids also have a vent which makes it easy to microwave so you can store and eat from the same container.

Gordon Ramsey will be very pleased with your kitchen work ethic because TidyBoard keeps it clean and clutter-free. Say goodbye to chaotic cooking and welcome spick and span prep…something Monica Geller would say and we would absolutely agree with her! So prep ingredients without any stress, strain pasta, store cuttings, soak fruits and veggies, compost scraps, and serve up a whole cheese platter too if you feel like! It is hard enough to sanitize everything all the time, work from home, do all chores, so the last thing you should have to worry about is your meals and cleaning up after you cook. Bon appetit!
