A Side Table That Helps You Organize and Showcase Your Personality While Enhancing Your Love for Reading

Books have long been a source of knowledge, escape, and self-expression for people from all walks of life. The genres we read often reflect our tastes and interests, allowing us to showcase our individuality. However, in today’s fast-paced world, reading can sometimes feel like a daunting task, akin to homework. To bridge the gap between our love for books and our busy lives, the ORDO Book Side Table was created, providing a unique and functional solution to help us embrace reading more effortlessly.

Designer: Jugwang Lee

The ORDO Book Side Table is more than just a piece of furniture; it’s a statement of personal style and a reflection of your literary preferences. In a world where the average person reads only 5-6 books per year, this innovative table allows you to display your favorite reads proudly. With six book boards incorporated into the design, you can curate a selection that suits your taste and personality.

Reading should be an enjoyable experience, not a chore. The ORDO Book Side Table acknowledges the weight of books, both literally and figuratively. Its unique feature of providing a space for hanging books on the side table allows you to experience reading more lightly, much like clothes hanging on a dryer rack. This innovative design not only makes your books easily accessible but also adds an artistic touch to your living space.

Furthermore, the table’s “Resting Part” offers a convenient spot to save your place in the book you’re reading. This thoughtful addition ensures that your reading materials are always within arm’s reach, making your reading experience even more enjoyable.

The marriage of straight lines and curves in its design forms a harmonious aesthetic, blending seamlessly into various interior styles. Whether your home boasts a modern, minimalist decor or a more classic ambiance, the ORDO Book Side Table effortlessly complements any environment. The ORDO Book Side Table is designed with versatility in mind. Its rotation capability enables you to switch between two types: Type 1, measuring 600x360x350 mm, and Type 2, with dimensions of 500x360x500 mm. This adaptability allows you to customize the table’s height according to your environment and preferences, ensuring it seamlessly fits into any room.

The creation of ORDO involved a meticulous design process. Beginning with conceptualization and sketching, it progressed to the development of prototypes to ensure structural integrity and the proper sizing of components. The materials chosen, including MDF, stainless steel pipes, and steel book racks, were carefully selected to provide durability while maintaining a lightweight appearance.

After production through various companies in Euljiro, meticulous sanding and painting work were carried out to create a final product that exudes quality and craftsmanship. The result is a piece of furniture that not only serves a practical purpose but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of your living space.

In a world where the demands of modern life can often overshadow our love for reading, the ORDO Book Side Table rekindles our passion for books. Its innovative design allows us to express our individuality, making our book collections an integral part of our living space. With its practical features and adaptability, this piece of furniture not only makes reading more accessible but also elevates the overall aesthetics of our homes. In a world where life is undoubtedly better with books, the ORDO Book Side Table makes that life even more enjoyable.

This minimal steel side table will instantly uplift your home without drawing too much attention

I find side tables to be extremely adorable, to be honest. They’re never the center of attraction, always come second to coffee tables, and yet manage to provide great functionality without a single complaint. They also subtly cozy up against a wall in your home, occupying minimum space while offering maximum value. This last trait is gaining more and more importance since space constraint is becoming an increasingly popular issue in modern homes. We’ve seen quite a few innovative side tables – from the Winding side table that doubles up as a stool and features a ‘nose’ to a side table that also functions as a bookshelf. Another side table to join the league is the TO side table.

Designer: Naoto Fukasawa

Naoto Fukasawa designed this minimal and unassuming side table for the Italian design brand Plank. But it is that very minimal and unassuming nature of TO that makes it quite unique and an eyecatcher. Constructed from three simple shapes, TO was created to pair up with Plank’s comfy-looking LAND lounge chair, as well as other furniture pieces that are versatile enough to be placed in different settings – whether it’s an office space, a home, or a public place. Crafted from steel, the tiny table has a very clean and sharp aesthetic that perfectly complements Plank’s sophisticated range of furniture.

“The structure was meant to be traditional and clean and create impact by the simplicity of the design,” said Fukasawa.

A humble O-shaped top is mirrored by an O-shaped bottom, with a long T column in between them, to support and hold them together. All the different components measure 4 millimeters in thickness, thus giving the design a very precise and harmonious form. It’s the kind of furniture piece that you could place into any room of your home, and it would instantly uplift it, without coming off as loud and obnoxious. It could merge with the interiors of any home, while also making its presence quite clear.

TO is available in four color options – agate grey, quartz grey, black red, and black. Boasting a powder-coated finish, the TO is the perfect addition to your modern millennial home, if you’re on the hunt for a humble table that is a style statement, and does its job!

A table that works vertically or horizontally is perfect for small spaces

Everyone’s needs change, some more often than others. One day we might need a simple side table, but a laptop desk might be necessary a few weeks later. Considering how needs and situations change so frequently, it doesn’t always pay to keep on buying new things to fill the need. A single piece that can do the work of many is going to be more practical, especially when pressed for space. In some future world, we will probably have furniture that can change forms, functions, and even designs at a moment’s notice. Until then, however, we can always enjoy smart solutions designed to adapt to our context, like a simple yet beautiful table that works whether it’s standing on its legs or on its sides.

Designer: Oguz Ergin

Most of us will probably have at least one table that serves as our workspace, but some might need a side table for smaller objects or other purposes. If you have a spacious house or a sufficiently large room, having both and more is definitely more convenient. When you’re renting a tiny room or trying to economize your space, however, that really isn’t an option.

Verticale is a furniture design concept that tries to fit the bill with as few compromises as possible. In one mode, it is a desk that can stand beside your bed or in the middle of a room, holding a book and a drink on top while nestling magazines inside its open drawer. It’s not tall enough to work on, though, which is where its other “mode” comes in.

If you turn Verticle on its side, it transforms into a makeshift or even permanent laptop table. The side, which is now its top, is long enough to support a large laptop and even a cup of coffee if you so wish to live dangerously. You also don’t lose any storage space because that drawer becomes a magazine rack that can still hold your favorite reading material. Admittedly, it might be a bit uncomfortable working with the other leg on the floor, but it does leave ample room for your legs.

It’s almost amazing how a simple but thoughtful design could change a product’s functions so significantly, all without using fancy gimmicks, mechanical tricks, or unnecessary parts. The Verticale is all wood, made from layers of plywood that are bent and curved to form simple lines. It is intentionally spartan and lightweight so that it would be easy to turn the table on its side or back on its legs.

While you’re unlikely to do that ritual every day, it’s still reassuring to know that you’re getting one for the price of two, so to speak. In theory, Verticale saves you space and money, letting you get the most out of a piece of furniture that takes up room in what could already be a cramped area. Plus, it looks visually interesting, appealing, and even welcoming becomes of its natural tones. It’s a multi-functional product that provides a beautiful accent to your room, which is definitely a win-win situation.

Walden Furniture Series unveils new design classics you can shop for the home

YUUE Design Studio Walden Series

Fixing up a new house or an apartment can be really fun and, at the same time, exhausting. However, it can be a delightful experience if you know exactly what to do and where to buy stuff. Shopping should be a joy and not a chore, but it can only happen if you have already identified your needs and wants and the aesthetics and style that work for you.

Furniture shopping is always a good idea, but one needs to know what to buy so no time is wasted. One’s taste may change depending on needs and location, and even season in life, so it is essential that important factors are considered. Of course, there is the budget you can spend, the space where the pieces will be fixed, the features of the furniture items, durability and comfort, plus the overall look.

Designer: Weng Xinyu (YUUE Design Studio)

Walden Side Table

Walden Furniture Series

The trend for 2022 is curved furniture with soft lines; that is why you will notice that many furniture makers’ designs and items come with curves and soft arcs. The use of simple and natural materials like wood is also more prevalent, especially since there is a global campaign to go sustainable. The YUUE Design Studio team aims to develop affordable alternatives to iconic designs and expensive pieces. With the intention to craft new design classics in the modern age, designer Weng Xinyu decided to utilize solid wood. This is also so the elements can easily adapt to the design requirements and needs of the consumers.

The Walden Series of furniture pieces is a product of the designer’s special journey in life and career. Weng Xinyu is honest enough to say his journey has been lonely, coming with lots of contemplations, gains, and pains, but we can see the beauty that resulted from his different experiences. The new furniture series includes three mainly useful items: a Side Table, a Floor Lamp, and a Lounge Chair.

Walden Side Table Series

The Walden furniture pieces all present modern minimalism and each product shows elegance and simplicity, starting with the side table. The handmade wood table comes with precisely crafted parts offering a mechanical fit. There is a round tabletop that is the same size as the base ring, but the base is slightly thicker for added support and stability. The combination of the two offers visual balance while a wooden stick joins the two sliding parts. Another advantage of this design is that it can be combined with other pieces. Storage is also a plus because it can be slid easily under the bed or a sofa.

Walden Lounge Chair Details Concept

The Lounge Chair is yet another 3D puzzle-like furniture piece you can display and use at home. It uses simple materials such as leather sheets and wooden boards, and the flatpack design makes it easy to assemble and disassemble. There is some sort of geometry interplay here, as seen in the combination of the lines and curves.

Lounge Chair

The wooden boards are designed to be inserted into each other while still allowing space to contain a human body. The designer made sure there was a clever distribution of weight and pressure so the boards won’t be stressed. Check out the smoothened edges of the wood that offer comfort, especially on parts touched by the body.

YUUE Design Studio Floor Lamp

Last is the Floor Lamp as another minimalistic item ideal for a minimalist home— coming with a three-dimensional look– combining a surface, line, and a dot. This functional floor lamp features a rotatable lamp holder that is also helped by magnets so you know it is sturdy enough. It can be used as both a reading lamp or an upright as it can illuminate an object or a surrounding. At the base, there are three slots where you can fix the pole when you want to adjust the height.

Tadashi Side Table comes with a stomach for extra storage

Tadashi Side Table

There is no stopping creative designers from coming up with new side tables. There are plenty of choices now compared to before as the design world is moving towards innovative and aesthetically pleasing furniture items.

There seems to be a theme among Deniz Aktay’s designs. He has already designed a slew of side tables with some bending action on the tabletops. This time around, the tabletop bends on one side, turning into a transport handle. Like his other designs, the Wavelet and the Rool, the Tadashi shows corners that bend. There is no curve, but the lines and edges offer different surfaces.

Designer: Deniz Aktay

Tadashi Side Table

The side table appears to be two hallow cubes intersecting. The effect is a space underneath for storage. The area can be used for your books or other knickknacks. It can also be a space for your pet cat or dog where they can just lounge or sleep. It can also be used to store cushions, pillows, and blankets.

The space is like a stomach which can be used to store anything. You can leave it empty for a truly decluttered look. The wood finish offers a natural warmth, so it can fit most interiors.

Tadashi Side Table

Tadashi Side Table

In some ways, this Tadashi Side Table, reminds us of the Plot Twist Bookshelf. You can place it anywhere—the living room, the doorway, or the children’s bedroom. It can work as a side table or a stool where you can tie your shoelace before going out. It can be a toy storage, but the edges may not be safe for younger children.

The side table’s form makes it appear like a sculpture or art piece that can be another conversation starter. You see, the side table doesn’t have to be boring. It’s a furniture piece that can bring life to any room. It can serve as both a table and as a decor. The more unique the design is, the more attractive a table can be.

Tadashi Side Table

The German furniture designer Deniz Aktay is really serious about design. He doesn’t just show off something that looks nice or unique. He makes things that are really useful and innovative. He creates timeless pieces that people of different ages will love.

Aktay is becoming a recent favorite here as his works are really interesting. We’ve seen the Plot Twist Bookshelf and the Pet Table. The Triforce side cabinet is exquisite and we also can’t forget The Levels Table.

Ryosuke Harashima adds two modern antique tables to the STILLIFE Collection

A Day in the Harvest STILLIFE Collection Miss You Shanghai Blue RYOSUKE HARASHIMA

Ryosuke Harashima knows how to combine the past with the present. Every piece from his STILLIFE collection is making an impression. Two new creations have been added to the series, ready to wow the market.

What Ryosuke Harashima usually does is combine old things to create modern furniture pieces. The STILLIFE collection was introduced in 2019, and it is getting two new designs. Two tables are being added: the ‘A Day in the Harvest’ and the ‘Miss You, Shanghai Blue’.

Designer: Ryosuke Harashima

A Day in the Harvest STILLIFE Collection

The two tables take advantage of antique tools and combine them with glass and copper. The glass tops are available in color, while the copper table legs look very elegant with their shiny finish. The traditional item used in Chinese or Japanese culture is transformed into a modern iteration in this collection by the designer. Traditional tools being used in the modern age are not unusual. We have seen similar creations, but Ryosuke Harashima’s STILLIFE series is still very much elegant while retaining the natural beauty of the old tools.

A Day in the Harvest RYOSUKE HARASHIMA

The ‘A Day in the Harvest’ coffee table features a basket used for harvest from decades ago. On the back of the basket is an inscription that says ‘1965’. It can be assumed it was made that year or it was when the previous owner used it for the first time.

The basket comes with a woven bamboo pattern that has been retained up to these days. The winnowing basket underneath the glass table balances with the other sleek and shiny materials. Its original purpose is for sifting rice and grains. Such a basket is common in antique stores in Japan, and the designer made good use of it. The yellow glass top is inspired by the ears of rice we usually see in rice fields, especially during autumn.

Miss You Shanghai Blue RYOSUKE HARASHIMA

Miss You Shanghai Blue RYOSUKE HARASHIMA The ‘Miss You, Shanghai Blue’ uses an old Chinese folk tool, topped by clear blue glass. The idea is similar to the other table, but this one can be used as a cocktail table because of its height and size. It is taller with a round glass top that will remind you of either the water or the sky.

Underneath is a black Chinese water bucket that can hold your stuff. The legs are also copper, looking really sleek and classy. The water bucket appears to be hanging underneath the glass top. The bucket doesn’t move because the table legs surround it so you know it is sturdy and durable enough.

Wavelet Side Table’s curled side doubles as a handle

WAVELET Side Table Concept

A side table is now more than just an essential furniture piece. It also serves as home decor and can be a conversation starter. We are always on the lookout for interesting ones that we believe can make quite an impact in the furniture design world.

No matter what your style, you will find the Wavelet interesting. The tabletop appears to be showing off a wave curl which isn’t just part of the aesthetic. The curl also doubles as a handle for when you want to move the table to a different location.

Designer: Deniz Aktay

WAVELET Side Table

Not that transporting a side table is a problem, but admit it, the wave curl as the handle makes sense. There really is no need for a handle, but the Wavelet is what “form meets function” is all about. You will probably think the solution is trivial, but it makes it easier to move the table from one location to another.

The Wavelet’s tabletop is plywood with a smooth finish and is bent on one side. The bent wood becomes the transport handle to make your life easier. It’s ideal for those who like to move things around the house—you know, those who can’t seem to be content with how they arrange their living room or bedroom. (Ehem, that’s me.)

WAVELET Side Table Design

WAVELET Side Table Style Design

Another exciting thing about the Wavelet is the leg portion. There are only three legs that meet in the middle to hold the tabletop. It’s sturdy enough to hold the table’s weight, but of course, we don’t expect you to put a lot on the table.

A metal version of the Wavelet has been rendered as well. Again, it is exactly the same minimalist side table except for the material, finish, and color. It appears to be spray-painted red with a smooth matte finish.

WAVELET Side Table Red Metal

German furniture designer Deniz Aktay has studied architecture and urban planning. We have seen his other furniture design projects, and we can say his background and work experience have been helpful. His style becomes evident in how he creates, forms, and designs.

WAVELET Side Table Concept Design

The designer believes that good design is about “finding the right harmony between proportion, material, and functionality.” He focuses on the appropriate materials, originality, simplicity, detailing, and proper element joining with this principle. For Aktay, designing a furniture item can be a challenging but exciting experience. The Wavelet Side Table is perfect proof of that simplicity and originality.

Miscellaneous Side Table created from waste marble fragments

Miscellaneous Table Details

Miscellaneous is a word that means a collection of various random things. It is a term used to describe items of different characteristics grouped in one. People don’t usually pay attention to it, but every article is deemed necessary.

The Miscellaneous Side Table got its name from the idea of being varied in form and shape. Waste fragments have been collected from marble sculptures. Some of them resulted in beautiful forms that are stunning. The side table from this collection is unique, so you’re getting something that is uniquely yours.

Designers: Chiara Pellican and Edoardo Giammarioli (Millim Studio)

Miscellaneous Table Image

The materials are different types of marbles and stone—Udaipur marble, Carrara marble, Marquina marble, and Arenaria stone. The aesthetics appear to be grand and luxurious. No two side tables would be alike because of the unique shape and form of the scrap marble.

Right now, there is only one Miscellaneous Side Table. It’s unique in every sense since it is asymmetric, looking like an artistic sculpture. Millim Studio introduced the side table by co-founders and designers Chiara Pellicano and Edoardo Giammarioli. Using leftover materials from sculptures, a new table is made and looking every inch a masterpiece.

Miscellaneous Table

The designers have been researching and exploring new ways to express themselves in their work. As a creative duo, they were able to take advantage of nature in its most natural form and came up with something that is more useful. Since waste marble fragments are used, this can be considered a sustainable effort. More side tables like this must be created for people who like “variety” and one-of-a-kind furniture pieces.

Millim Studio is an Interior Design Studio based in Rome, Italy. This particular studio explores the concept of beauty and creates “experiences between art, communication, culture, and design.” The studio also provides value to time and research by creating innovative and unique processes.

Miscellaneous Side Table Millim Studio

This side table uses different types of materials that show different colors and textures. Some parts are smooth while some areas appear to be rugged. The raw aesthetics are seen on the final sculpture as the designers decided the material would influence the design process. Describing the concept behind the design, Millim Studio used a quote from Salvatore Settis’ book The Future of the ‘Classical’: “The fragment has in itself an invincible necessity, the germ of something, something that is worth more than a meaning, the obsessive urge to be completed, the peremptory eloquence of the incomplete.

Top 10 furniture trends of 2022

What truly makes or breaks a home at the end of the day is the furniture that’s placed in it. The right kind of furniture design can create the essence and soul of a home. And I do feel it’s essential that the soul of our home is a reflection of our own soul. Hence picking furniture pieces that bring out the best in our homes, while authentically representing our personality is a must. There are certain types of furniture that have gained enough popularity to be deemed as trends! These furniture trends are fun, sophisticated, and functional. They add an extra spark to your home, without compromising on utility in the least. From furniture designs that transform and save space to sustainable furniture created from cardboard – these intriguing furniture trends are definitely here to stay.

1. Transforming Furniture

Finding a spacious apartment in our urban cities is a rarity! And if you’ve managed to scrounge one up, then you’re an exception and a very lucky one that is! Because let’s be honest, our modern apartments can be pretty cramped. Space constraint is a major issue, and we often find ourselves squeezing through our own belongings. It’s the ultimate test of our maneuvering skills. However, transforming furniture designs are an ingenious solution to this issue of space restraints.

Sustainable furniture design studio Ori adds a WFH apparatus called the Cloud Bed to the mix, merging an office and desk setup with a cantilevered lofted bed that descends to the floor to really hone in the mutability of working from home. In its initial form, the Cloud Bed features a working desk and table beneath a lofted bed. Built for hospitality interiors and personal spaces, this space-saving work from home solution was designed to cover a small footprint inside the home. UL certified to ensure the bed remains lofted and close to the ceiling during working hours, the desk area folds into itself, merging with the floor as the bed descends from its raised position. While it might be tempting to hop up to the top of the bunk bed and sleep from such a high height, the Cloud Bed, Table Edition comes equipped with an internal mechanism that lowers the bed to the floor once the workday is done. With the push of a button, the mattress and wooden bed frame lower down from its elevated post in time with the desk folding inwards toward the floor.

2. Multifunctional Furniture

There’s just something about a multifunctional piece of furniture that ticks all the checkboxes for me! Imagine a product that’s been designed to work as a clothing rack and a treadmill?! Or a side table that transforms into a chair! Space-saving goals much? That’s the magic of a multifunctional furniture design. It looks like a single product, but functions as more than one! They’re a smart option for our modern urban homes, which tend to be pretty cramped, hence adding multiple bulky and cumbersome furniture designs to them isn’t really an option. But multifunctional pieces that serve a variety of purposes, and solve a bunch of unique problems can be a lifesaver in such situations.

Inspired by the blurring of work and play in WFH spaces, Juwon Kim, Jiwon Song, and Eunsang Lee framed Layout with a translucent, corrugated exterior finish that immediately catches the eye. Wrapped in sea green, the Layout desk is modular by design to incorporate a plethora of different work and entertainment features. The Layout desk is topped off with an upper cover that’s designed to conceal the workspace after the workday’s done.

3. Sustainable Furniture

In 2022, we cannot ignore the needs of our planet anymore, we need to take the environment into consideration, and what better way to start doing that than from our own homes? Sustainable furniture is taking the design industry by storm, they’re a step towards making our homes and our daily lives more eco-friendly and sustainable. They’re an attempt to cast aside toxic materials, and instead, add furniture designs to our home that won’t rot away on Earth for years once we’re done with them.

Rattan is an eco-friendly natural material that is usually used in the creation of baskets or furniture, especially chairs. It is sustainable and resilient which makes it an exceptional wood that renews in just 5-7 years. Designers love rattan for creating furniture because the manufacturing is low-tech and the production process usually involves crafting by hand or using facilities that do not negatively impact the environment. Rattan is also an easy material to mold physically and creatively to fit your idea, it accepts paints and it can be worked into many styles. Moreover, the inner core can be separated and worked into wicker – talk about reducing waste! This stool explores the malleability of rattan as a material in furniture design.

4. Smart Furniture

As pleasing as aesthetic and visually intriguing furniture designs can be, people are now shifting towards furniture designs that are more focused on function and utility (that simply put make our lives a whole lot easier) and one such interesting genre is Smart Furniture! Tech-enhanced furniture is a whole new ballgame, catering to our multiple needs, and making our daily lives more comfortable.

The Hariana Tech Smart Ultimate Bed is one such example. It was designed to have everything you will need to relax within your bed frame. It has an integrated reclining massage chair with a remote, a built-in Bluetooth speaker, a bookshelf, a reading lamp, an air cleaning system, an area to plug in and charges your devices, a foot-stool that opens up for extra storage, and a pop-up desk for the ultimate WFH setup, Netflix marathon or cozy reading hours. The sound system also features an SD card slot, an auxiliary port, and a USB port.

5. Pet-friendly Furniture

Ensuring your pet feels safe, secure, and comfortable at home is every pet owner’s priority. We want to make sure they always feel loved and truly at home! It’s important to create an environment where they feel completely safe to let their guard down, while also managing to stay active and playful. And, pet-friendly furniture designs are one way to help your pet feel completely at home! It allows them to truly integrate and feel at one with your living space.

The Playground is a doghouse that also alternates as a modular sofa! The various modules of the sofa can be arranged creating not only different sofa designs but also fun spaces wherein your doggo can hop, bounce, and play about! The wooden doghouse on one side of the furniture piece seems super comfy and adorable! A little hole on its roof, allows your dog to pop his head out of the doghouse, and connect/interact with you while you lounge about on the sofa. It’s the perfect way to spend quality time! Xiao designed Playground, especially for millennial pet owners. The designer kept in mind that the homes of millennials often have space constraints, and nor do they have much free time on their hand. Hence, Playground is extremely easy to put together, and will not occupy much space in our modern-day cramped apartments. Since Playground was created for young target customers, Xiao tried to give it a trendy and cool appearance! Bright colors, minimal woodwork, and a little plant give the furniture design a modern appeal.

6. Floating Beds

The most important and sacred space in our home is our bedroom! It’s our happy place, a space where we can simply sprawl on our bed and de-stress after a long day of adulting. I believe doing up your bedroom in the right manner is extremely essential to a peaceful mindset, and of course, the core focus on any bedroom is its bed. Floating beds have somehow crept into a lot of bedrooms these days. These beds quite literally float above the floor of the room, creating an open and airy effect, and making the bedroom seem much more spacious than it actually is.

Designed by Anna Kireeva, this bedroom in a house called ‘In The Woods’, is truly placed right in the middle of a forest! A floating bed is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, that provide access to the woods around it, creating a space that feels large and open.

7. Flat-packed Furniture

Flat-packed designs are really quite intriguing! They’re portable, easy to put together and occupy minimum space. And, this innovative technology is now being introduced to almost all kinds of product designs…including furniture! From foldable chairs to pet houses, there’s nothing that cannot be flat-packed. These designs, not only rate high on space efficiency, but also eliminate the usage of heavier space-consuming designs. They are definitely functionally and ergonomically beneficial, but they also possess minimal and clean aesthetics, that allow them to harmoniously blend with any living space. Flat-packed furniture is also a major boon when you’re moving houses. You can easily ship all your furniture from one home to another, without having to do any heavy lifting and carrying. Flat-packed furniture designs are truly the future!

In the unfolded position, FLUP works like a conventional mat or rug on which we can sit or step without interrupting the movement of people through the space. It transforms from plane to volume, from floor to space while changing the function with its shape. In the folded position, it works as a piece of minimal furniture – it can be used as a pouf, an auxiliary seat, a footrest, a nightstand, etc. It is a perfect example of space-saving furniture. What makes it better is that there is no assembly required, it is a singular element that transforms with folds into another object like origami.

8. Minimal Furniture

I absolutely love minimal furniture designs! A subtle and simple piece of furniture can truly complete a room. It can be the final piece that makes a space come full circle, building a comfortable and cohesive haven, rather than a random area. Furniture pieces make or break a home, they add to the essence or soul of a home, hence one needs to be extremely picky while choosing a furniture design. The design should be a reflection of you, and what you want your home to be. When you place a piece of furniture in a room, it should instantly integrate with the space, creating a wholesome and organic environment. And I believe minimal furniture designs do exactly that!

The Piano desk gives that traditional piano design a nod by incorporating it into your familiar wooden desk with some additional inspiration from the Standard chair by Jean Prouvé that elevates the minimal piece. The Piano desk created so the designer could experiment with a hybrid material selection and play with interesting visual contrasts. On the one hand, we have metal which is a cold material that is beautifully balanced by the warmer wood. On the other hand, the same metal which allows for a slimmer silhouette is given the sturdiness with the addition of wood. The key factor in the briefing was to design a product with a democratic approach. That is how the minimal desk without any complex production processes was born while still featuring a small design element that other minimal desks didn’t have – the dipped shelf!

9. Furniture with Hidden Details

Designed with extreme attention to detail, overflowing with love and care, and not only aesthetically but functionally pleasing, furniture designs with hidden details are an invaluable addition to your living space, making you feel truly at home. These furniture designs not only feel like pieces of art but also touch your heart. Once you settle on to them, or place your favorite book upon them, or simply brush past them, you instantly feel “Ah, I’m home!”

Designed by Casey Johnson Studio, the Billow Desk is a majestic wooden desk. Its most intriguing detail would be the shelving space, below the tabletop, which is billowed out from the front. It’s a storage unit that instantly calls for attention, and is at a distinction from the usual storage designs.

10. Cardboard Furniture

We always associate furniture with being built from traditional materials such as metal, wood, or plastic. And, although these materials create fantastic products, I do wonder if they are the most sustainable and efficient option out there. A material that furniture designers have been recently venturing into is…cardboard. Cardboard is great for building sustainable furniture, as these designs tend to leave a minimal carbon footprint, and are recyclable and biodegradable as well! Not to mention product designs crafted from cardboard tend to be light, portable, and also easy to assemble.

Every piece of furniture that Kibardin makes is one of a kind, there is no mold and he shapes them all himself. We are now moving towards a sustainable lifestyle but Kibardin has been doing this for over 25 years – he has successfully recycled 2000 pounds of cardboard which is equivalent to saving 17 trees into sustainable furniture. To put it into perspective, 17 trees absorb 250 pounds of carbon dioxide each year and we need to ramp up the materials we use in design so that they serve a functional purpose while also contributing to slowing down the climate crisis. Using sustainable construction materials like paper and turning it into furniture that is stylish, modern, and eco-conscious is the future of long-lasting interior design.
