Small iPhone 16 camera design change could have important implications

Apple is known for moving slowly but surely, changing things only when it really makes sense and after numerous tests. That can be especially seen in the iPhone’s cameras, which don’t change year after year, unlike the general trend in the mobile industry. Whether it’s the hardware itself or the design of the camera bump, Apple has been careful and meticulous in introducing changes. That’s why it’s a bit of a big thing that Apple is rumored to be changing the iPhone 16’s camera design for the first time in three years, but it’s a change that will bring a significant change in functionality, at least for the base iPhone models, and possibly a very different aesthetic as well.

Designer: Apple (via MacRumors)

Apple has traditionally been modest with its camera hardware because it is able to pull off great images even with sensors that look outdated on paper. It also doesn’t change the design of the camera island as often as other brands, introducing a pill-shaped bump in the iPhone 8 Plus in 2017 and only switching to a square enclosure in the 2019 iPhone 11. In the 2021 iPhone 13, it moved the position of the lenses so that they’d be diagonally opposite to each other, creating a visually more interesting composition than the plain vertical arrangement of the iPhone X.

According to rumors, however, Apple is switching back to a vertical design for the iPhone 16 cameras, and it’s unlikely just on a whim. There is a chance that this change will enable the Spatial Video function that’s only available on the iPhone 15 Pro models, a feature that allows recording video in three dimensions. This, however, requires using both the main wide camera and the ultrawide shooter in tandem, in which case these two sensors have to be aligned vertically or even horizontally.

What’s a little more interesting is that Apple is reportedly testing a different design for this new camera as well. There is one that looks exactly like the iPhone 11 and 12, with the cameras vertically arranged. Another potential design, however, places the vertical pill shape of the iPhone X on top of the square bump of the iPhone 15. As interesting as that may look visually, it’s a rather distracting design and would be a bit complicated and inconsistent with the current iPhone design language.

Changing the camera arrangement to enable Spatial Video recording is another sign that Apple is aiming to bring Pro features to the base iPhone 16. An earlier leak claimed that a redesigned Action Button will be available on all iPhone 16 models. That button will supposedly switch from a mechanical button to a pressure-sensitive capacitive surface, a feature that could expand what the button is capable of doing.

This beautiful MagSafe collection offers a sustainable way to top up your devices

Some might consider Apple’s new MagSafe tech for iPhones and Apple Watches as simply catching up to the already existing wireless charging technology, but it clearly does a lot more than what its industry rivals have accomplished so far. The smart addition of magnets is no small matter, as it enabled many different forms of wireless chargers that no longer required devices to lie horizontally flat on a desk or charging bed. That kind of freedom and flexibility gave way to rather interesting designs, some minimal, some multi-functional. It also gave manufacturers a bit more leeway when it came to materials, which this new collection of MagSafe chargers takes advantage of in order to bring accessories that are not only handsome but also less harmful to the environment.

Designer: Magdalena Gembala (Oakywood)

Apple’s first-party MagSafe chargers are already extremely minimal, comprising only a small puck that magnetically latches on to an iPhone or Apple Watch. While that did offer more flexibility in how to use it, the designs were not entirely elegant. Fortunately, it’s also possible to actually use those official chargers in ways Apple doesn’t, like putting them inside bases and holders that add a little more functionality and style to the charger.

This Oakywood MagSafe collection does exactly that, utilizing the Apple MagSafe chargers to provide the actual charging function of these beautifully designed products. What they offer, instead, are solid and multi-functional bases that not only keep your iPhone or Apple Watch in place but also add some life to your desk. With a mix of wood and matte aluminum materials, these stands and mounts look handsome on any motif you might have going for your desk, providing eye-catching ornaments without being distracting.

These MagSafe accessories are not as trivial as they might seem. One actually mounts onto an edge of a shelf, preferably one on or near your desk, while another sticks to a wall. In all cases, the MagSafe charger they hold can be removed and used as normal, just in case you prefer not to see the device’s screen but still want the beautiful presence of these wood and metal ornaments.

This Oakywood collection isn’t sustainable just because of the materials used, though that definitely plays an important role. None of these accessories actually come with an Apple MagSafe charger, so you can and will have to use what you already have anyway. Not only does this mean that the stands and mounts themselves don’t have any non-sustainable components, it also helps prevent more e-waste in the long run. It’s definitely a win-win situation when you get not only a multi-functional MagSafe charging stand but also beautiful accessories that, at the very least, don’t contribute to the death of the planet by their mere existence.

EDITOR'S QUOTE:

Cute, compact, and capable, the Anker 3-in-1 Cube with MagSafe charging station is a great addition to any Apple fan's arsenal if they can overlook the charging time and price tag.

With Apple’s trifecta of mobile devices that can charge wirelessly, there has been a rise in charging stations that try to accommodate all three. While it isn’t always the case, many people who own an iPhone are likely to also own an Apple Watch or AirPods. Conversely, those who own an Apple Watch or AirPods are guaranteed to own an iPhone. 3-in-1 wireless charging docks for these three initially came in the most common form of a flat bed, but this design has become somewhat old-fashioned and impractical because of the amount of space they take up. Some charging dock designs have become smarter and fancier to use very little space, but these beautiful docks are not things you’ll be able to take with you on your travels. Casting its net wide, Anker launched a rather adorable 3-in-1 Cube charging station for that very purpose, so give it a few spins to see if it’s more than just a pretty face.

Designer: Anker

Aesthetics

The Anker 3-in-1 Cube with MagSafe’s design is uncommon enough to grab anyone’s attention, at least anyone that’s paying too much attention to your desk or stuff. In its inactive and folded form, the charging station almost looks like a desk toy if not for the obvious Anker branding. Its black surface and premium looks do suggest that it’s no plaything, though, but it will still be eye-catching either way.

When fully unfolded, the Cube looks like a toy battle station with its tilted top and extruded shelf on one side. Those familiar with wireless charging accessories will now see telltale signs of that kind of functionality, especially with the ring that marks MagSafe-compatible chargers as well as the white concave surface common to Apple Watch chargers. When all charging surfaces are occupied, the charging station definitely looks the part of a battle station. Some might find it too busy to the point of being distracting, but it definitely saves a lot of horizontal and vertical space to keep your desk or shelf tidy.

The accessory is pretty minimal in terms of visual design, but Anker put a few odd accents that try to spice things up without making much sense. There is a small patch of reflective material on the front for the hinge of the adjustable phone charger, for example. Even stranger, however, is the mirror surface beneath that “lid,” reflecting the AirPods case charger or the case itself. Its purpose is a complete mystery since it can’t really be used as a mirror for your face, nor does it reflect anything that you wouldn’t be able to see directly anyway.

All-in-all, the Cube’s unique appearance makes it a good accent on a desk, whether folded or unfolded. Its compact form, however, is also ideal for stuffing into your bag when you need to travel with all your Apple devices. It is a bit heavy at 14.46oz/409g, but that also means it will stand without wobbling on desks or tables, even if all you’re charging is the Apple Watch and nothing else.

Ergonomics

The Anker 3-in-1 Cube with MagSafe has a simple appearance that belies its functionality. After all, who would expect that a small box would be able to hold three devices all at once? Fortunately, the accessory is also so easy to use that you can never go wrong, even if you try hard. It’s trivial to set any of the three charging spots up and still fold the box down in a flash, making it ideal for people who need to pack up and go at a moment’s notice.

The charging area for iPhones and other compatible smartphones lifts up like the lid of a treasure box, except that the opening is facing away from you. This allows the phone to be tilted to face you rather than always looking up at the ceiling. It can only tilt as far as 60 degrees, but that’s more than enough to see the phone’s screen comfortably. Since this is MagSafe charging, the phone won’t slide down in that position, either. Even better, you can put the phone sideways, too, turning the charging station into an ad hoc stand for watching videos.

The Apple Watch charger pops out from the side with a simple push, revealing a familiar surface for placing the phone. This retracting mechanism makes it super easy to access that function without getting in the way when you don’t need it. There is enough space to accommodate Apple Watches from any generation, though the small space might make for a tight fit for the larger Ultra model. Unlike the iPhone charging part, the Apple Watch charging platform is fixed at its angle, so you won’t have access to its Nightstand feature while charging. That might not be necessary since the iPhone can be charged at a visible angle, but that won’t be the case if the Apple Watch is the only one sitting there.

In comparison to the iPhone and the Apple Watch, the charger for AirPods is a bit more awkward but still convenient nonetheless. You’ll have to flip the phone charging “lid” open to put the charging case in the gap, so there’s no way to keep that top closed while charging the AirPods. Since it will be lying at the back of the charger, there’s no way to check the case’s charging status without having to turn the box. It’s not exactly too much work, but it could be inconvenient, especially if you consider that the charging cable could be pulled in the process.

Performance

While the 3-in-1 Cube with MagSafe offers the convenience of charging all three devices at the same time, it doesn’t exactly offer the fastest charging speeds for any of them. On the box, the iPhone MagSafe charger maxes out at 15W, while the AirPods charger goes up to 5W. Perhaps the most disappointing figure is the Apple Watch charger at its max speed of 5W.

The 15W output of the iPhone charger is admittedly faster than what the old Apple chargers put out for years, but it’s hardly the fastest now that Apple has adopted more modern technologies. It can charge an iPhone 14 Pro Max to full in almost three hours, but smaller iPhones will definitely charge faster. The magnets are definitely strong enough to keep that large iPhone in place, but some people might want to take particular note of the cases they use, just in case they’re too thick to make a proper connection.

At 5W, the Apple Watch charger is sadly behind the times, but that might not matter much to people who charge the smartwatch overnight or during working hours. It takes about two hours and a half to fill the Apple Watch, which is plenty of time except if you’re in a hurry. Anker is definitely capable of providing more power, but it might have had to make some compromises in order to gain Apple’s certification for MagSafe products. In a compact box like this, higher output could result in higher temperatures that could, in turn, become a safety risk.

Anker ships a 30W charger in the box along with a 5ft/1.5m USB-C cable (more on that later). That high output is necessary to supply enough power to all three devices simultaneously, so it’s also good that the respective chargers need very little in the first place. The power brick has foldable plugs that make it compact and easy to throw in a bag, along with the 3-in-1 Cube. Given its output, it might even be the only charger you’ll have to bring along aside from your laptop charger, even for some wired devices.

Sustainability

Like many accessories for mobile devices and consumer electronics, the 3-in-1 Cube for MagSafe uses plenty of plastic materials. Fortunately, Anker is one of those companies that are trying to change that formula and reduce its negative impact on the environment. The charging station itself is typical in that regard, but Anker has taken steps to mitigate the damage.

Like Apple itself, it started by reducing the amount of plastic it uses in packaging by an average of 90%. It has also switched the inner material of the packaging from plastic to pulp and has used 100% FSC-certified recyclable packaging paper, which also uses natural soy ink to reduce the use of harmful chemicals. While the Cube itself has plenty of plastic, its more compact size allowed Anker to reduce that by 30.9g during its construction.

Unfortunately, those sustainability gains are undone by shipping a charger with the Cube. On the one hand, it is definitely convenient since you won’t have to scavenge for a 30W charger, presuming you don’t already have one anyway. Admittedly, not all iPhone users have such a fast charger since Apple no longer ships one with iPhones. With the addition of adapters for different plugs, that still adds quite a significant amount of plastic to the total package, not to mention making the packaging bigger than it could be.

There’s also the worry of repairs and replacement parts, especially with a pop-out mechanism for the Apple Watch charger. It’s a little more complex than a simple hinge and adds moving parts that will wear and tear over time. It could definitely be the part that will get damaged first, and it won’t be something that owners will be able to fix on their own. And once that mechanism is broken, accessing one of the critical functions of the device also goes out the window.

Value

In terms of design and convenience alone, the Anker 3-in-1 Cube with MagSafe looks like a solid deal already. Cute, attractive, compact, and multi-functional, it is both an excellent travel accessory as well as an eye-catching desk decoration. And since it comes with a Made for MagSafe certification, it comes with the same confidence and trust that people give Apple’s first-party products.

It does cost a rather hefty $149.95, which is quite higher than what other 3-in-1 docks cost. Given how average the charging speeds are, you might be reluctant to make such an investment, especially if you’re one that relies heavily on super-fast charging. That said, you’d be hard-pressed to find something as adorable and as space-efficient as this, especially one that you can easily pack with you on your regular travels.

Verdict

Who said that charging docks have to be literal docks that take up a lot of space on your desk or shelf? Who says that they have to stay on said desk or shelf in the first place? The Anker 3-in-1 Cube with MagSafe Charging Station definitely doesn’t say so and challenges the status quo of its kind. Yes, it is a bit pricey, and the charging speeds could be better, but one can imagine that Anker had to make some compromises to keep the device small and satisfy Apple’s requirements. Minimal yet attractive, compact yet multi-functional, this little box makes a great companion anywhere, whether on your desk or your hotel room’s bedside table.

This MagSafe power bank can charge an iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods all at once

We’ve come to rely on a lot of gadgets in our lives today. From smartphones to smartwatches, we surround ourselves with battery-powered devices that often need to be charged every now and then. That’s especially true if you’re knee-deep into Apple’s mobile ecosystem, owning an iPhone and the accessories that go along with it. Keeping these devices charged at home is no longer a problem, thanks to a variety of multi-functional chargers that try to accommodate all of them at the same time. When you’re on the go, however, it’s an entirely different matter, especially because they have different ways to charge. This new portable battery pack from Momax, however, solves all of that and is the only power bank you’ll need to top up your Apple gadgets all at the same time.

Apple’s new MagSafe for iPhone opened the doors to a new breed of accessories that could take advantage of the magnet-aligned wireless charging technology. Many docks for home or office use incorporated these wireless technologies to create a haven for iPhones, Apple Watches, and compatible AirPods cases, many of which can charge all three devices simultaneously. While convenient, the problem with these docks is that you can’t bring any of them outside, let alone use them when there’s no power outlet to plug into.

MagSafe-compatible power banks do exist, but those are designed only for iPhones, leaving no room for its accessories. That’s where the Momax AirBox Go comes in, providing a home away from home for your Apple devices. Even more importantly, you don’t actually have to choose between those devices which to charge first because you can charge them all at the same time. Even if you don’t actually need to charge them simultaneously, it’s still reassuring that you can use the same power bank for your iPhone, Apple Watch, or AirPods.

The AirBox Go uses a rather ingenious design to make this possible. There is a small circle that flips up in order to support charging an Apple Watch even in Nightstand mode. There is a cover that reveals a nook for an AirPods wireless charging case. And, of course, there’s that telltale circle for MagSafe for iPhones. In addition to ensuring a precise alignment every time, the magnet is also strong enough to hold an iPhone in place, even while holding the power bank upside down.

The Momax AirBox Go is also no slouch when it comes to actual power output. With a 10,000mAh battery inside, the battery pack can charge an iPhone three times over at a fast 15W output. That’s twice the output of most aftermarket MagSafe power banks. And for everything else, there’s still a 20W USB-C port that can be used to juice up other devices, such as an iPad mini. Of course, it can also be used for any USB-C device, like that odd Android phone you might have lying around.

Portable, powerful, multi-functional, and convenient, the Momax AirBox Go offers the ultimate flexibility in charging your iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods wherever you go. Mixing the best of Apple technologies with innovative design, this power bank might very well be the only one you’ll ever need. For just $136, you no longer have to worry about your Apple devices running out of power, especially when you need to charge them all at the same time.

Apple self-repair program begins its long sustainability journey

Apple has finally opened the doors that will make it easier to repair its products, but there might still be some caveats to an almost perfect situation.

Today’s smartphones weren’t designed to be easily repairable, at least not by regular people or unauthorized personnel. In addition to making sure that phones don’t easily fall apart or get damaged by dust or water, companies are also quite keen on protecting their intellectual property from prying eyes. Of course, that has made the repair narrative of these expensive devices even more expensive, tedious, and uncertain. Things have gotten so bad that even governments have started to weigh in on the matter. Before things come to a head, though, Apple spearheaded a new trend to offer self-repair services, which it has now finally launched, starting in the US.

Designer: Apple

Companies have many reasons and excuses to limit repairs to official channels only.

There’s the usual quality control and legal liability, which manufacturers can’t guarantee the moment other people start tinkering with their products. And if people don’t have the right knowledge and the right tools to repair phones, they might end up doing more harm than good in trying to save money.

That said, there are also plenty of reasons why people should be able to open up and repair phones, though not necessarily regular consumers. Third-party services, which had existed long before the iPhone came to the market, have been struggling to make ends meet because of the high and expensive barriers to entry to be an authorized service provider. Going beyond simple quality control, this state of affairs has allowed a select few to obtain a monopoly and dictate high prices for those services.

Fortunately, it seems that things are starting to change, at least for major phone brands like Apple, Samsung, and even Google. It’s not that these devices have suddenly become easier to repair, but companies are now giving third parties equal opportunity to obtain parts, tools, and information on how to repair iPhones and, soon, Macs. It’s not without its catches, though, such as its initial availability only in the US for now, and the repair specialists at iFixit point those caveats out.

The biggest one is that you can only buy original replacement parts from Apple’s website, which is the only way the company can retain control over the quality of its products. That pretty much still gives Apple a very tight hold and monopoly over those parts, ensuring that it is both the gatekeeper and the bottleneck for this supposedly more open ecosystem. Ideally, it would allow even third-party replacement parts to be used in order to create a more competitive ecosystem that would help drive the prices of parts and services down.

Of course, just because you can doesn’t mean you should, at least for normal iPhone owners that have broken screens or dying batteries. This self-repair service program is intended more for smaller shops than individuals, especially considering the prices for the parts and tools. At the moment, only the iPhone 12 and older as well as the 3rd gen iPhone SE are supported, and the program is only available in the US. Eventually, however, that will spread to Europe later this year and will cover Macs with Apple Silicon as well.

DIGI SWAP gives your old film camera a new lease in life as an upcycled digital camera

You can now continue enjoying the unique analog experience of a film camera without giving up the conveniences of your smartphone.

Although the camera market continues to survive and even thrive despite the onslaught of smartphones, one type of dedicated shooter has almost gone extinct. Except for pros and hobbyists that are trying to faithfully recreate the intricacies and flaws of the physical medium, film cameras have been mostly left gathering dust, unused, and forgotten. People often keep these old cameras as memorabilia of a time long past, when taking pictures had a certain element of uncertainty and excitement whenever you pressed the shutter button. Now you can relive those moments and reuse your old film camera thanks to this rather ingenious system that combines the feeling of an analog shooter with the conveniences of a smartphone camera.

Designer: Yoshihiro Komori

Click Here to Buy Now: $188 $235 (20% off). Hurry, only 974/100 left!

DIGI SWAP is actually made up of two parts, two sides of the same coin. On the one hand, you have an adapter that attaches to the back of your film camera and acts as a mount for your iPhone. In a nutshell, the adapter projects the image that goes through the film camera’s lens into the iPhone’s camera, effectively turning the smartphone into the equivalent of the roll of film. Of course, that alone doesn’t complete the experience, which is where the DIGI SWAP app comes in.

That app is almost magical in the way that it seemingly syncs with what you do on the film camera without actually connecting physically with those controls. Aside from adjusting some settings on the app, like the ISO sensitivity, everything happens automatically. You use the film camera’s controls for aperture, shutter speed, and focus adjustment, but the photo is automatically saved to the iPhone’s gallery the moment you press that physical shutter button.

Samples were taken with DIGI SWAP.

This has the effect of recreating both the feeling as well as the visual style of old-school film cameras, which often have a rather blurry quality. You can pull the wind-up lever just before you shoot your picture, just like in the old days. In fact, the app even has a “Film Empty” screen that shows up after taking 36 shots. Of course, it’s just an artificial limitation, and you can keep on shooting by tapping the “Film replacement” button, but it still faithfully recreates the emotions that often run high when you realize you’ve run out of film.

More importantly, DIGI SWAP offers shutterbugs a fun and useful way to upcycle their old faithful companions. Rather than just letting them gather dust or, worse, throwing them away, they can now use that very same film camera in a new way that lets you relive the feelings that even digital cameras today don’t provide. It can even become a way for different generations to connect, where the young and the old meet halfway with a loving and nostalgic blend of the past and the present.

iPhone 15 concept includes a scroll wheel alongside the periscope lens and we’re wondering why

iPhone 14 is the next possible iteration of the Apple iPhone that we’d be expecting this year. The upcoming iPhone is likely to land without a notch and an updated body design. Moreover, Touch ID may make a comeback and the camera bump could be evened out. But even months before the iPhone 14 goes official, we are already hearing rumors about the iPhone 15. In fact, designers have taken cues from these leaks and envisioned their idea for the iPhone to appear in 2023.

As Apple gears up for a fruitful new year, iPhone 13 is blowing sales figures for the Cupertino tech giant. Over 40 million units of the iPhone 13 have sold during the holiday season. These sales numbers are elating for Apple since the company continues to struggle with supply chain issues. iPhone 13 wasn’t a radical shift from the redesigned iPhone 12; for the iPhone15 the designers think there is a possibility of the iPhone going portless and may include a magic wheel controller alongside the cameras.

Designer: Antonio ADR De Rosa

Whenever a new iPhone is on the horizon, the design world cannot help but believe that Apple would deliver something groundbreaking to shock us. This is a sentiment devised on the previous experiences where Apple has gone against the tide not only to stay afloat but even swim all clear. iPhone 14 concepts are dime a dozen on the internet, and steadily the hypothetical takes on the iPhone 15, like this one with a strange scroll wheel on the side, are keeping us enthralled.

To get a clear picture of what the speculations are and how they could look on the iPhone 15, this design is a fine example, except for the camera bump, which is likely to be done away within the iPhone 14, so there is a little chance it will appear back in the iPhone slated for 2023. Other than that, the concept is pretty much in line with the rumors currently. Two variants of the iPhone 15 appear in 6.1 and 6.7-inch displays touting an impressive 144Hz screen refresh rate. The phones appear portless on the bottom, which has been Apple’s intention; it has been mulling the possibility of offering iPhones without a port in the future.

The iPhone 15 concept depicts a triple camera module that has a slight bump from the body and comprises a telephoto, wide-angle and a twin periscope camera. The design still uses a very familiar iPhone frame with the classic power button and volume rocker on the left side. The most intriguing feature is the scroll wheel on the right side – the specific purpose of which is anyone guess at the moment – but most likely, given its placement, it has something to do with toggling the periscope lens. But is that sort of hardware something Apple will ever want? We are sure it doesn’t!

This iPhone Air Flip design with pro-level camera array is how the first foldable from Apple should be

Since Apple’s foldable iPhone is the next big pie consumers are waiting anxiously to have a bite off; foldable iPhone mockups are landing dime a dozen. In that league, Designer Antonio De Rosa’s take is closest to the interesting rumors about the phone, and it begs a glance!

Apple’s foldable iPhone is one of the best-kept secrets in recent times. While numerous leaks, renders and mock-ups have pooped up, there is no official word on such a device from Apple. This is not slowing down the rumor mill, which predicts the first folding iPhone could unveil the latest in 2024, and it would appear in a flip-style form factor, which might steal the light from Sammy’s Galaxy Z Flip range. Presumably, Apple considers flip iPhone as a more appealing form factor, for a large screen device that can fold to fit in the pocket, as opposed to inward folding Galaxy Z Folds or the outward folding Royole FlexPai.

Designer: Antonio De Rosa

Designers love to draw inspiration from rumors and leaks by industry insiders to create their renditions of upcoming/in-works Apple devices. And so, we keep seeing these mockups. But Apple itself likes to play the waiting game. The tech giant takes its own sweet time to adopt a new form factor. We have seen that in the case of smartwatches. Apple entered the market with an Apple Watch only in 2015 while smartwatches were commercially available for years.

Now even in the case of the foldable iPhone, Apple seems to be playing the wait and watch game. Supply chain sources suggest, Apple has ordered flexible OLED panels from Samsung (which it has likely perfected for its own foldable smartphones). There is little doubt then that iPhone Flip is on the horizon. Before Apple perfects the iPhone that flips probably like the Motorola Razr, Antonio shows “iPhone Air”, a premium iPhone Flip with an iPhone 13 Pro-like, triple camera module.

Next to the flagship-level camera array is the secondary display to show notifications when the iPhone is flipped close. When flipped open, the iPhone has a large, lively display with a punch-hole camera alongside a longer cutout for sensors. The display looks as large as the rumored 8-inches with 144Hz screen refresh rates. This is indicative of Apple’s intention to offer iPhone Flip with a screen that’s larger than on the regular iPhone Pro Max variants. We love the conceptual interpretation of floating rumors in this iPhone Flip design, but the peculiar hinge distinction on the back is a put-off for me.
