Noon Home Has a Bright Idea

Lighting is an essential aspect of the home environment. It can dictate the mood whether that be a movie, a romantic meal or the need to get work done, the lighting reflects and enhances the task at hand. Knowing the effects of lighting, it comes as no surprise when you hear of the year-on-year increase in purchases of smart bulbs. Thankfully, with the Noon Smart Home Lighting System, you don’t have to replace your bulbs but can still get the same impact.

By replacing your current switches, your traditional lights and bulbs can adapt to your lifestyle needs like those mentioned above. The intelligent Noon Switches are hyper-intelligent, having built-in motion sensors so that when you get up in the middle of the night – your lights, from room-to-room, will illuminate with low-level lighting to guide you. Compatible with Alexa, Noon Switches can also be used through voice activation. A really cool and personally my favorite feature of the Noon Smart Home Lighting System is the Vacation Mode. Learning your typical behavior (lighting intensity, activation times, etc.), Noon Switches will turn on automatically so that when you’re away, it will give those onlookers the impression that it’s still business as usual.

Once installed, all of a room’s lights can be adjusted with one-touch, from the Room Director’s glass touch-screen OLED display. With Noon, there is no need to hire a lighting designer. Noon automatically creates three unique scenes – Relax, Everyday and Bright, by analyzing information about each bulb, fixture, and room type.

ThinkGeek Useless Light Switch: Home Automation, Decepticon Style

April Fools’ Day is ThinkGeek’s Christmas. The company once again prepared several fake products for our amusement, with the best one being the Useless Light Switch. It’s like the useless machine, only it doesn’t just turn itself off, it takes down the light bulb with it.

On one hand, it’ll help you save on electricity. On the other hand, you’ll find it funny for a minute and then you’ll re-install your old switch back, feeling like an idiot while doing so.

I was actually torn between this and the tiny Magic: The Gathering set, but the video won me over.

Frankenstein Light Switch Plate: It’s A Liiiight!

Turn your room into a mad scientist’s lab with this silly light switch plate. Made by Etsy shop 3D Printing Egg, the Frankenstein looks like the lever switches that are often used in vintage sci-fi films and shows.

The plate was designed by Thingiverse member Jeff Kerr aka LoboCNC, so if you have access to a 3D printer you can print it yourself.

3D Printing Egg sells the single switch Frankenstein for $10 (USD) and the double switch for $15. The shop prints it out of ABS plastic in a variety of colors, as well as glow-in-the-dark.

iOn Touchless Capacitive Switch: Wave on, Wave off

Watch out Clapper; there’s a new switch in town. iOn is a capacitive switch that lets you toggle lights and other devices simply by waving your hand in front of it. You can even extend the switch’s coverage or hide it altogether by putting a conductive object on top of it.

ion touchless capacitive switch 620x368magnify

Like most smartphone touchscreens, iOn uses capacitive sensing to work. Think of it as a much simpler theremin. Aside from waving your hand to toggle a device on or off,  you can also keep your hand in front of iOn to gradually dim or brighten a light source. Apparently you’ll also be able to control the switch via a mobile app. Finally, as I said earlier, you can also turn a conductive object into a switch by placing it on top of the iOn. iOn fits over standard US switch boxes and can replace most mechanical switches out of the box.

Wave to your browser and pledge at least $40 (USD) on Kickstarter to get an iOn switch as a reward. The switch is both practical and cool, but I hope it doesn’t consume a lot of electricity, or at least has a power saving mode.

iOn Is an Innovative Take on Smart, Wireless Light Switches

iOn Wireless Capacitative Control Switch

Using the “Stop being sad and be awesome instead” model, iOn proves us that old light switches don’t need to be replaced from scratch. Instead, we could use a wireless capacitative control switch to make them better and improve their functionality.

If there hadn’t been a global financial crisis, I seriously doubt it that companies would focus that much on repurposing various devices, or on simply improving the functionality of the existing ones. That being said, iOn promises to bring magic into your home, by allowing you to interact in new ways with your electronic and electrical devices. It can be controlled via iOS or Android devices, and requires no physical contact in order to turn the light on or off. Best of all, it can even be hidden inside a wall, fact that could definitely make your visitors wonder how in the world you switched the lights on.

The manufacturer provided an extensive description of the iOn wireless capacitative control switch on Kickstarter:

“How does it work? Just like the screen on your smart phone, iOn is controlled by a capacitive proximity switching system. We just made the capacitive field bigger, increased its range and added some clever features to make it more stable.

iOn gives you cool new ways to control your environment, opens exciting design possibilities–and brings a little magic into your life. You can simply wave your hand near an iOn switch and the capacitive field reacts to turn iOn on or off.

Hold your hand inside the field to make your lights dimmer or brighter. Or use your smart phone. Imagine controlling all of your iOn switches from your iPhone or Android smart phone or even from your smart watch.”

In case it wasn’t obvious already, the developers of this little gadget are trying to get the money necessary for mass production by running a campaign on this crowdfunding platform. They’ve set a goal of $100K, and are willing to make small steps to get there, as iOn costs only $40 for early birds and $45 for the others.

You might also want to visit the company’s website, in case you’re interested in this device and want to learn more about it. Depending on how you look at it, iOn could be either an incredibly innovative device, or just a superfluous one.

Building Brick Light Switch Plate Fits LEGO, Mega Bloks and More: Turn on, Turncoat

Who would’ve thought that a light switch plate would reunite LEGO with its sworn enemies? Thinkgeek claims that the surface of its Building Brick Light Switch Plate is compatible not just with LEGO but with Mega Bloks, K’NEX, KRE-O and PixelBlocks pieces. That means you can go wild and pimp your light switch in infinity plus four ways.

One crafty commenter even suggested that you attach your keys to a LEGO brick keychain and then you’ll never lose your keys again.

Thinkgeek sells the Building Brick Light Switch Plate for $10 (USD) per pair. If it’s really that versatile, Thinkgeek should forget about light switches and just sell vanilla base plates based on this mold.

Alien Facehugger Light Switch Plate: Better Leave the Lights on

There are plenty of things to be afraid of when you are in the dark. Anything could be walking your darkened halls and waiting to pounce on you. Aliens, a Predator, maybe even Weird Al Yankovic. Darkness is our enemy. I say embrace your fear and gather enough courage to install this awesome Alien Facehugger light switch plate.

Sure, it is scary, but at least you know it is there and not moving anywhere. It might even scare some of those other demons away. Besides, when a facehugger is busy hugging your wall switch, it’s all good. It is too busy to hug you to death.

It’s made from resin and cold cast bronze by Afterlight Sculpture and sells for about $24(USD). I don’t recommend ever flipping it to the “off” position though.

Han Solo in Carbonite Light Switch: Flick His Switch and Turn Him on

Han Solo in carbonite makes a great decoration on your wall. Just ask Jabba the Hutt. Jabba loved to turn the lights on and see Han’s frozen body staring back at him. And now you can too with this Star Wars Han Solo in Carbonite light switch.

han solo light switch
It was made by Etsy seller wickedstudio, who has worked a UL-approved switch into the crotch of Han Solo. When the lights are of Han is at rest, when they are on, it’s as if he saw the Falcon for the first time.

He hand-sculpted the switch plate to the appropriate scale for the switch. It installs directly to the wall over your existing switch outlet, and sells for $40(USD).

Freakishly Cool Monster Light Switch Plates Will Make You Afraid of the Dark

Gross Light Switch Plate

These monstrous light switch plates look disgusting enough in the light. Imagine how much creepier they’ll look to an unsuspecting victim person in the dark. Dressing up the switch plates for your lights isn’t anything new (remember the Power Up Arcade Light Switch we covered over a month ago?), but to say that these monster plates will add to the beauty of your home is an understatement. Or that could be an outright lie, depending on your taste and preferences.

These light switch plates are made from polymer clay and each features a unique mash-up of random monster and human body parts that will make any faint-hearted person queasy. The random boils and pus-filled bumps don’t help, either. Check out more variations of the monstrous light switch plates after the jump.
