This smart tape measure comes with a digital display and can turn measurements into spreadsheets

With the ability to display completely accurate measurements in metric, imperial, and even fractional units, the DataPro 25 is an incredibly handy piece of hardware for engineers, plumbers, architects, DIY home enthusiasts, and anyone who measures spaces and objects for a living. Moreover, with the touch of a button, the tape measure broadcasts the exact measurement to its companion smartphone app, which lets you log readings into a spreadsheet. Welcome to the future.

Sort of a hybrid between your regular tape measure and a nifty calculator, the DataPro 25 gives you the best of both worlds. It’s as compact as the tape measure you’re used to, and is designed to be operated the same way (so there’s absolutely no learning curve)… however, a presence of a seven-segment LCD display on the top (with buttons on the side) gives it a significant upgrade, and Bluetooth connectivity quite literally changes the entire game.

This isn’t the first a tape measure’s gotten a digital screen, although it is the first tape measure to also have the ability to broadcast exact measurements to your smart devices via Bluetooth. You use the DataPro 25 the way you’d use a normal tape measure – simply pull the tape out and place it against the length of an object or a surface. Although, instead of staring at the tape to see what the measurement reading is, the DataPro 25 gives it to you with sheer precision.

The screen displays the exact measurement you need in metric units or even in imperial ones… and unlike your regular tape measure, you can even view the measurement in decimal or fractional styles. For measuring between two facing surfaces, such as within window or door frames, the DataPro 25’s ‘inside measure’ feature automatically adds the width of the tape measure body to your final measurement. No more needing to flex or bend the tape to get the right measurement!

The DataPro 25’s new Bluetooth ability, however, is being touted as a total game-changer. Now with the ability to easily send your measurements to an app, the DataPro 25 eliminates any sort of human error. Instead of reading the measurement, noting it down, making conversions, and then sharing the data with someone, the DP25 does it with a simple push of a button. Sure, you could read measurements on the digital display (removing any chances of visual/parallax error) and then note them down, but you don’t need to anymore. Simply installing the DataPro 25’s companion app on your phone or tablet (or software for your computer) allows you to save measurements and even input them into spreadsheets that can prove to be incredibly handy and time-saving later down the line.

The tape measure is just one of those objects you end up taking for granted. Given that it’s been used for decades now, there’s little impetus to change it, but the DataPro 25 definitely takes that charge. By introducing tech (in a thoughtful, actionable way), the DP25 streamlines the measuring process without complicating things, ensuring that anyone and everyone can use it easily, without any chances of human error!

OTOTO’s Giraffe-inspired measuring tape is the “height” of creativity!

Giraffe necks and “height” of creativity may just be my weakest pun ever, but isn’t this giraffe-inspired measuring tape just adorable? Miss Meter, as it’s called, is an exotic animal from the savannas of Africa, with a unique neck that can elongate and contract. Designed, however, to be a fully functional measuring tape, Miss Meter cleverly integrates the tape-roll within its body, with a switch on the spine that allows you to lock the auto-retraction feature.

Another really clever detail lies in Miss Meter’s head, which sort of easily works as a hook too (seen on most tapes) to help hold the tape against a corner or edge of an object or surface to help you single-handedly measure better. When not in use, Miss Meter proudly sits on any tabletop with a certain majestic appeal, rather than being dumped in your tool-drawer like any other measuring tape. What next?? A Rhino that can sharpen your kitchen knives?!

This Measuring Tape Measures Both Time and Distance

If you want to know the time, you use a clock, a watch, or a smartphone. If you want to measure the length of an object, you use a tape measure. But it appears this tape measure didn’t get the memo, as it’s actually a clock.

Alex Fiel and Anna Lynton made this unusual timepiece that uses its measuring tape to indicate the current time. They built it by ripping apart an ordinary tape measure, then installed a custom 3D-printed enclosure, along with an Arduino Nano controller, a stepper motor, and some ball bearings to move the measuring tape in and out of its shell.

While it’s first and foremost designed to work as a clock, I see no reason why you couldn’t use its tape to measure things – assuming it’s late enough in the day to fit the object you’re measuring, and you work fast enough that the time doesn’t change time on you.

You can check out the full build log for the Measuring Time clock over on Instructables.

To Infinity and beyond!

infinite_ruler_1

I think it’s time to say goodbye to the measuring tape. It’s just one of those inventions that we cling to from the past. The Infinite Ruler gives us a good reason to move beyond the traditional measuring tape. For starters, it’s much smaller. It also comes with a screen that displays the measurement, and most importantly, it doesn’t have an upper limit! It can just keep going, because it doesn’t have a tape!

The ruler design also has a unique inner ring structure that allows it to fit on the smallest as well as the largest of fingers!

The Infinite Ruler is a Red Dot Design Award winner for the year 2015.

Giraffe Tape Measure Sticks out Its Neck for You

Tape measures come in all different forms, but most of them have boring designs. Not this one. This tape measure goes by the name of Miss Meter and it is shaped like a tiny giraffe. It is probably the most adorable way to take measurements that was ever created.

Miss Meter is the creation of Tel Aviv-based designers OTOTO. They are the ones responsible for those equally cute Nessie products we showed you a while back.

You can find Miss Meter at the SOHO Design Shop. This would be the longest necked giraffe in the world, if it were a realistic scale model.

Xyze Takes & Saves Body Measurements for Online Shopping: Extra Large Convenience

Clothing stores online usually have sizing guides for their products, but those guides assume that the customer knows his size. A company called Xyze is working on a way to ensure you get the right clothing size when buying online.

xyze_on_measuring_tape_for_online_shopping_1zoom in

Xyze’s system includes the On, a measuring tape that doesn’t actually have any measurements on it. Instead, it will send your measurements to an iOS or Android app via Bluetooth. The app will also walk you through the steps of taking your measurements. Finally, Xyze is working on a widget for online clothing stores. When you’ve stored your vital stats with Xyze, the widget will use that data to give you the right size for the store’s products.

Xyze says it’s also working on a smartwatch app so you’ll always have your measurements at hand. At wrist?

Pledge about $44 (USD) on Indiegogo to receive the On measuring tape. I think this is a great idea that will benefit both stores and customers. I bet a large database of vital stats has scientific applications as well. I just hope Xyze will also open up their software and service to people who don’t need the “smart” measuring tape.

The Half & Quarter Trick

For some unexplainable reason, measurements for stuff (products, clothes, tables etc.) end up being in quarter or half-inches. They seldom are rounded off to the nearest whole number, which is why accuracy in measuring is of prime importance. The Half & Quarter tape highlights the 1/2 and 1/4 measurements via an intuitive LED strip in the tape interface. It just makes life easy for fashion designers, professional carpenters, product designers, engineers and architects.

The Rolling Rule

Your index finger has many purposes; just add plus one to it! Thanks to the Finger&Ruler concept, you can measure the dimensions of an object by simply rolling the ruler over it. The wheel concept makes it easy to measure using just one hand, in lieu of the traditional tape measure and two-hands! Simple and functional, I really think this concept rocks!

Measuring Tape iPhone Case Design

There’s no app for that. There are some things that just can’t be done exactly right in the digital realm. Like proper measuring (fans of laser measuring tools, pipe down, you know what I mean). So this rugged looking Measuring Tape iPhone Case design concept simply adds a measuring tape to the back of your iPhone case. Could you get a better measuring tape by just gluing a real one on to the back? Probably, but it wouldn’t slip into your pocket as easily. No matter, it’s just a design and not an actual product.

An Improved Measuring Tape

measuring tape An Improved Measuring Tape
You probably see a measuring tape and think, “there’s nothing major that can be done to improve on this”. And that’s why you’re not Sunghoon Jung, who has designed additional features for his Hole Measuring Tape. The first innovation is the holes and pin. You extend the tape, press the pin down through the hole, insert your pencil in a hole at the tip, and now you can rotate the measuring tape to draw perfect circles and round objects.

But that’s not all. A slit in the length of the measuring tape allows you to draw perfectly straight lines quickly and easily. This conceptual design is up for an IF Design Talents award. We like this one, simple improvements to an everyday object.
