This reversible mid-high bed concept can grow with your child

Buying furniture as adults can already be quite a stressful endeavor, but buying one for kids doubles or even triples the difficulty. Not only do you have to consider safety and comfort, but you also have to consider how they can grow up fast and make those products useless in just a year or two. That’s why parents might sometimes be tempted to buy more affordable furniture that they can either dispose of, resell, or give away quickly, which is a practical solution but not a smart one. It would be better if the furniture could actually change and adapt to the child’s growing needs, like this mid-high bed design concept that still be used by the same kid after they’ve grown a bit.

Designer: A Su (PUPUPULA)

It might be surprising to learn that there is a lot more variety when it comes to kids’ bed designs. Some types are better for certain ages, while others provide room for more than one person. Like most beds, however, these are often designed with a singular target audience in mind, which means they easily outgrow their use and their charm in just a few years. That wouldn’t be much of a problem if not for the expense and waste that comes with replacing those beds again and again.

The Big Eyes bed concept solves that problem by employing a design that can change its purpose depending on the number or age of its owners. And it doesn’t employ complicated tricks like modular or moving parts that could actually be dangerous for a toddler. Instead, you can simply flip it over to change it from a mid-high bed to a basic bed and vice-versa.

The mid-high bed position is perfect for younger kids or siblings who need to share the same bed space. The top bunk is the main bed, while the bottom space can act as a secondary bed or a spacious play area. Once the child grows up a bit, however, removing the ladder and turning the bed over changes the story completely, with the bottom now acting as a basic bed and the top frame as a place to hang cotton canvas play curtains for some privacy.

Big Eyes is made of birch plywood, which gives the bed a warm, welcoming tone. There are no moving parts or hidden compartments, making it easier to turn the bed over as needed. The bed’s design is actually quite minimalist, leaving the freedom of decoration and personalization to parents and kids. That same simple design, however, is also its strength, allowing it to have that reversible functionality you won’t be able to pull off on more sophisticated designs.

How to design your bedroom for better sleep

Designer: Lago Design

Bedroom décor plays a crucial role in providing optimal sleep that is essential for good health and the emotional well-being of its occupants. Considering we spend nearly one-third of our life resting, appropriate décor can transform the bedroom into a sleep haven and offer the perfect environment for rest and positivity. Note that even small changes can positively impact our sleep cycle and help control insomnia or sleep disorders. Here are tips for creating a relaxing ambiance and a décor best suited for sound slumber.

1. Incorporate A Relaxing Color Palette

A soothing color palette with muted colors is conducive to sleep and helps create a calm atmosphere. A soft color palette of grays, light blue, silver, lavender, pale yellow, moss green, and peach contribute to a sound sleeping pattern. The best part about pastel colors is that it adds color and imparts a balanced look to the space. Going for cool colors and avoiding warm colors like red and yellow is highly recommended. Don’t forget to introduce your personal style, and make sure to choose a color that relaxes you. To create a cocoon-like atmosphere, create an accent wall in a deep emerald green or navy blue shade and combine it with white or off-white walls. One can introduce pops of colors in cushions, rugs, art, and statement furniture. Additionally, it is advisable to go for a matte paint finish instead of a glossy finish for a restful look.

Designer: Tathya Macwan

2. Invest in a Comfortable Bed

The bed forms the bedroom’s centerpiece, so position the bed in the center of the interior wall and make space for side tables on either side. The bed should be ergonomically designed according to the height of the end user. In particular, the design should allow the hips and knees of the occupant to be aligned, and the feet should be flat on the floor when sitting. Consider a reading nook near a window to encourage reading so that it is also a transition to bed during the night.

Designer: Kreatika

3. Use Comfortable Bedding

Maximize comfort in the bedroom and create the mood for sound sleep. Use crisp and luxurious white or ivory sheets with a thread count of 300 to 400. Change the linen at least once a week, and add a soothing fragrance while washing to prevent the build-up of dust and allergens. By neatly making the bed daily, one can add to the aesthetics and imbibe positivity. Also, do not clutter the bed with too many pillows. Pick the right pillow for a sound sleep so that the neck and spine are aligned, and go for two standard pillows and just one accent pillow. For the sheets, quilts, and blankets, opt for natural fabrics and materials like cotton, linen, bamboo, wool, and linen. They are responsive to body temperature and do not trap heat. Note that synthetic materials tend to absorb heat and result in perspiration or discomfort during the night.

Invest in a new mattress that offers optimum comfort, balance, and back support. Don’t go for a mattress that is too soft or firm; changing it every 7 to 10 years is essential.

Tip: As changes in body temperature can disturb sleep, consider a mattress that allows good airflow and less heat retention. The best materials for the mattress are memory or latex foam with a thin breathable cover.

Designer: Chelsea Allen (Down Home Projects)

4. Use Warm White Light

Light plays an integral part in maintaining our natural circadian rhythm. Go for warm white light instead of bright overhead lights, as soft lighting allows one to sleep better. Install dimmer lights so that the body can unwind and enter sleep mode. Some of the best light fixtures for the bedroom include table lamps, reading sconces, and recessed lighting to lightly wash the walls.

Designer: Cheatham Fletcher Scott

5. Go for Blackout Curtains

For restorative sleep, it is essential to block any light that is filtering into the indoors. Transform the bedroom into a dark, serene space by adding blackout liners for the Roman blinds or drapery. One can also opt for curtains with heavy fabric and light-blocking properties. This is one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent natural light penetration during the wee hours of the day.

6. Create a Clutter-free Space

A messy and cluttered bedroom can affect our sleep, create stress, and cause anxiety. For a relaxing bedroom décor, getting rid of clutter and keeping the storage items out of view with adequate built-in storage is essential. Nothing that is not required in the bedroom, like extra books and to-be-folded laundry, should be there. Make optimum use of wall space with shelves to free up floor space and impart an airier feel to the room. Also, make it a habit to clear clutter and organize it daily so that space does not get overwhelmed. Finally, go for a storage bed and make sure that the underside of the bed does not become a dumping station for keeping extra items, as it may release negative energy.

Designer: LANAI Design Studio

7. Absence of Electronics

Minimizing or eliminating distractions by removing electronic items like the laptop away can remind you of office assignments, tablets, or TV, as the light from electronic items can affect your sleep. Keep the charging station of the phone outside the bedroom or in a spot where you can hear the ring in case of an emergency. It is always good to camouflage the TV in a cabinet or armoire. Watching TV can result in disturbed sleep.

Tip: As per studies, avoid using electronic devices an hour before sleep. This is because screen time may expose one’s eyes to blue light. It can disturb the circadian rhythm and negatively affect the quality of sleep.

Designer: Norvo Design

8. Create A Healthy Space

Ensure proper ventilation and airflow to create a healthy space promoting good sleep. This is also one of the best ways to control dampness and mold growth. Additionally, bringing in sunlight during the day can uplift our mood and energy and enable a good sleep pattern during the night. Live plants and flowers can help one feel calm and bring an outdoorsy vibe into the interiors. It’s also a great way to add life, personality, and color into the space. Finally, infuse warmth with family pictures that depict good memories so that the bedroom is your personal abode and is also rich in detail. The temperature should be between 60 and 67 degrees, and humidity should range from 30% to 40%.

Designer: Barn & Willow

9. Reduce Noise

External noise may disturb sleep and have an adverse effect on our health. The area around the bed is equally important, so add a rug as it helps in reducing noise; go for premium quality rugs and carpets as they provide a warm and comfortable underfoot. Finally, go for double-glazed windows that drastically reduce noise and create the ideal environment for good sleep.

10. Add Fragrance

Aromatherapy creates a calming ambiance, transforming the bedroom into a stress-free and anti-anxiety zone. Fragrant flowers, scented candles, and essential oils like lavender and jasmine are perfect for creating a calm and relaxed vibe within the interiors.

Man Builds Remote Controlled Bed So He Never Has to Leave It

I’ve heard of couch potatoes before, but never bed potatoes. But here to prove there is such a thing, a 39-year-old man from China named Zhu Jianqiang went and built himself a joystick-controlled bed so he never has to get out from under the sheets to go about his day. Talk about a genius!

The bed moves about as fast as a walking human and gets an impressive 30 miles to a full charge (there’s plenty of room for a large battery). It can tackle steep grades thanks to its large tires and braking system and includes a motor for raising the incline of your head and a canopy for staying out of the sun. Now it just needs a mini-fridge and I’ve found my dream bed!

In the video, Zhu even takes the bed down to a pond to do a little fishing. That’s cool. At least until he accidentally steers himself into the water. Then it’s less cool and more cold and wet. Unless, of course, it can transform into a submarine bed the way James Bond’s would.

Floof for People is a fluffy cave you can snuggle into to escape the world

No one is too old to have a comfortable place to escape worries and anxieties, even if you sometimes need to be a contortionist to fit inside.

Most of us had something like a fortress of solitude when we were kids, whether they were made from stacked boxes, piles of pillows, or sheets held up by ropes. As we grew older, we gave up those sacred places in exchange for a simple blanket and pillow. There is no reason not to have that comfortable and comforting space again, no matter how young or old you are. That’s the very tempting proposition that these “cuddle caves” are making if you don’t mind looking like a human inari sushi in the process. Then again, you’re trying to escape from the world’s judging eyes anyway.

Designer: Rose (Floofcouture)

There is almost nothing more comforting than being wrapped with something soft and warm, be it a hug or smooth fabric with soft, thick filling inside. That’s why we dive into our beds or duck under covers after especially exhausting days. Our bodies and brains seem to be hardwired to find such physical sensations soothing and relaxing, perhaps reminding us of human companionship and love.

Of course, we don’t always have access to hugs, even from our pets, but we can always have access to a Floof. Initially designed for our furred friends, the designer has created two human-sized Floofs for the perfect at-home getaway, even for just a few hours. Simply dive in, alone or with a friend or a snack, and curl up into a hopefully comfortable position to while the day away.

Made from high-end faux fur and stuffed with thick filling inside, these “escape dens” offer a safe and comfortable zone to chill after a day’s work or even get rid of a hangover during the weekend. Handsewn with Brazilian waxed cord, each Floof for People comes out as a unique work of art that doubles as a floor pillow, whether you’re inside or out. It’s also made to vegan specifications so that it can be used by any and all people.

The Floofs are actually made with kids in mind, but the product seems to be more popular with adults. It only goes to show that you’re never too old for a cuddle, and now you don’t have to feel embarrassed about it because you can have your cuddle completely on your own.

The Top 10 bed designs that promise to reinvent your sleep!

Our beds are our safe haven, our ultimate safe space, where we can just nestle in after a really bad day, and let go of all our worries! On my days off, I love snuggling up in bed, watching some Netflix, while munching on my favorite snacks. I’m sure most of us share the same sentiment. Our bed has literally always got our back. But finding the perfect bed can be a dilemma! We all have different requirements when it comes to the ideal bed, and just because a bed works perfectly for someone else, doesn’t mean it’ll work perfectly for you as well. Hence, we’ve curated a diverse collection of super comfy, cozy, and innovative bed designs that’ll tempt you into immediately jumping onto them. These beds promise to soak up all your stress!

Pandemic or no pandemic, we can all agree that this is the ultimate bed just like its name states – the Hariana Tech Smart Ultimate Bed! The $2800 price tag is justified with a myriad of features that make it perfect for a weekend in or even work from home – let’s be honest, they both feel the same right now. You know we always have to get up to get stuff before we settle into relax mode? Well, this bed was designed to have everything you will need to relax within your bed frame. It has an integrated reclining massage chair with a remote, a built-in Bluetooth speaker, a bookshelf, a reading lamp, an air cleaning system, an area to plug-in and charges your devices, a foot-stool that opens up for extra storage, and a pop-up desk for the ultimate WFH setup, Netflix marathon or cozy reading hours.

Suspended on a single leg, the Fluttua Bed by Lago Design truly looks like it’s floating in the air! The bed can be installed on various kinds of walls, handle up to 240kg of weight and it’ll transform your snooze session into one magical experience. Quite honestly the bed reminds me of Aladdin’s Magic Carpet! I really wouldn’t mind jumping on it and sailing effortlessly through my dreams like Jasmine. That is the closest I’ll probably get to acting like a princess!

Titled the Work/Sleep Balance, this morphing piece of home decor is ideal for tiny apartments, serving two purposes within a small footprint. The desk top is large enough to accommodate most of your work accouterments, while the cabinet on the side features a collapsible tri-axial bed frame that opens up to become a base for the mattress, which rolls right up and slides into a compartment in the desk’s back. The transformation takes around 2-3 minutes, allowing you to efficiently use your space to work during the day, and catch some shut-eye during the night!

Designed by Hi-interiors, the HiBed is quite frankly the bed of my dreams. The second generation in their smart beds, this one is a more minimal and sleeker version of its predecessor, the HiCan. A modern take on the traditional canopied bed, the smart(er) bed is versatile and integrates effortlessly with any and all furnishing. Equipped with a built-in 4K projector that can be synced with a series of devices to binge-watch movies/TV shows on a 70-inch retractable screen, the HiBed is the epitome of in-bed relaxation. A built-in surround sound system with invisible speakers makes the bed feel more like a movie theatre.

Just a mere 100mm thick when folded, the Extendable Flatpack Paper Bed is quite incredible for a few reasons. Made entirely from paper, the bed uses an accordion-style folding mechanism to allow the bed to extend and collapse when needed. The paper’s vertical layout gives it incredible strength, allowing it to easily take the weight of two people (up to 300 kilos, or 661 lbs) sleeping or sitting on it (the mattress helps distribute the pressure too). The bed’s foldable nature may give it the advantage of portability, but its foldable mattress allows it to also turn into a sofa and an ottoman stool when you need it. Just fold the base and mattress along and you’ve got yourself a simple, sturdy seating device, with or without a backrest!

zipline_loveseat_1

zipline_loveseat_2

Normally shape-shifting furniture sounds like something bachelors would have. A bed that’s also a couch? Bachelor’s dream come true! However, the Zipline Loveseat’s design makes it fit into any household. It exudes a certain finesse that’ll make it look great in any and every home! The Zipline comes in four separate parts that when put together, can be turned into either a bed, or a sofa, or even a divan. Separate elements can be used individually too! For example, the small units that you’re left with after turning Zipline into a sofa can be used as either footrests or really chic ottoman stools! You choose what furniture you want or need, and the Zipline Loveseat will shapeshift to fit your demands!

The Three Sixty bed by Savoir truly puts the extra in extravagant. As the name suggests, it rotates 360 degrees and is currently the most expensive bed on the market with a price tag of…I suggest you take a seat right now…$300,000. The Three Sixty is meant to shock and dazzle from every angle, literally. You can change your view with a simple touch on their app. It also has reading lights, USB slots, and power outlets weaved into its sides along with glowing LED lights at the bottom to give it a levitating illusion. The expensive tag comes at the cost of 300 hours of skilled labor and the state-of-the-art turntable from Bumat, a company that usually makes them for the Geneva Motor Show. To make it even more exotic, the cotton velvet used in the headboard was sourced from Dedar and the topper was made from rare natural fibers of a Mongolian yak.

slashbed_layout

slashbed

The Slash/Bed was designed to be so incredibly compact when shipped that its entire set of components fit into two boxes that are the same size-footprint as two large pizzas. Open the boxes and your entire bed sits within, ready to assemble. The Slash/Bed is designed in such a way that putting the bed is a one-person task and requires no power tools. The bed relies entirely on Japanese joineries, and the ‘Slash’ design allows each beam of the bed to be folded in half, but be strong when opened out, transferring minimal weight onto the hinge. In the places that use screws, the Slash/Bed relies on metal inserts, so the screws don’t puncture or damage the wood, making it easy to disassemble the bed too.

cuddle_bed_04

cuddle_bed_02

When we think of a bed providing us with the ultimate relaxation and comfort, we would normally connect this directly with the mattress, but what if the bed itself could contribute to this factor? Well, that’s the objective of the Cuddle bed, which features a flexible, cushioned headboard that’s packed full of functional features! Each side of the headboard can be pivoted by the user to create a sense of privacy and security that conventional beds are missing. This movement is reminiscent of the gentle human interaction that is hugging, or cuddling, adding an element of comfort to the design. The cushioned sideboard also removes the need for a bulky side table; the large pockets are perfect for storing smart devices and books in when the time comes to get some well-needed sleep!

ivation_ez_bed_1

The EZ-Bed uses a compressor and a pretty beautifully designed framework and layout to fit an entire twin-sized bed into a bag that’s good enough to fit in the boot of your car. Simply unzip the bed, connect the plug to a power source, and run the air compressor and the bed unfolds before your eyes, expanding to its full size in under two minutes. Durable, comfortable, and big enough for two adults, the EZ-Bed may have an aesthetic that’s more ‘NASA Mars Rover’ than ‘Quaint Apartment’, but it’s pretty ideal for those quick moments when guests need to spend the night over and you’re short of beds, or if you want to magically turn a spare room in your flat into an Airbnb homestay without shelling out money for a solid bed and upholstery. What’s more, the bed even compresses on its own back into its original space-saving shape when deflated.

These beds for Tokyo 2020 Olympic athletes are made from robust, eco-friendly, engineered cardboard

You wouldn’t normally equate cardboard boxes and beds with the world’s most famous sporting event, but trust Tokyo to do things a little differently. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics has, ever since the beginning, advocated keeping a low carbon footprint for the global event by reusing as many resources as possible. They’ve forged their Olympic medals from rare-earth materials sourced from e-waste, and even made torches out of metal used in temporary housing units that were created as shelter for the victims of the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Organizers of the 2020 Olympic event have announced yet another area of intervention for their eco-friendly approach. Beds.

The Olympics hosts as many as 18,000 athletes (as well as an additional 8,000 athletes for the Paralympics), and the beds for them will be provided by Japanese company (and Olympics partner) Airweave. The beds will be crafted from high-resistance cardboard, which isn’t just environmentally friendly, but is stronger than wood too. In fact, the beds can take on as much as 200 kgs of weight (which is far more than any athlete weighed in the 2016 Rio Olympics). The mattresses and pillows will be supplied by Airweave too, featuring a polyethylene construction that can be easily recycled after the month-long event that starts on the 9th of August and ends on the 6th of September with the Paralympics.

“This will be the first time in Olympic and Paralympic history that all villages’ beds and bedding are made almost entirely from renewable materialism,’ say Tokyo 2020 Olympic officials. Tokyo 2020 hopes to minimize resource wastage for its global event and has set a target of recycling or reusing as much as 99% of all items and good procured!

Bed Light, A Motion Activated LED Light For Your Nighttime Bathroom Breaks

motion-activated-bed-light-640x533

My girlfriend wakes up every darn morning around 3am, for a bathroom break. She’s kind enough not to turn any lights on, but I still hear her fumbling about in the dark, trying to make her way back to the bed. Do I feel sorry? No, sleep is important! But with the BedLight, we might find some compromise. It’s two 5ft strips of LEDs that you place underneath your bed, and that turn on as soon as they detect movement, and turn off after your 30s to 10 minute adjustable timer runs out. They come with all the mounting accessories, including clips to hide the cables, and can ship with either one or two sensors, depending on how many sides of your bed you need to outfit with the BedLight. Price is either $55 or $69, depending on your sensor requirement.

star-wars-bed-1

The Star Wars craze continues unabated, and the latest product we’ve stumbled across is this Millennium Falcon bed for kids. It’s being sold by Pottery Barn, and unlike the cheaper stuff at Ikea, is made from actual wood and not particle board. Its multi-layer finish is hand-painted, and the slat-roll foundation is designed for use with or without a box spring. It’s for kids, so if you’re thinking of getting this for yourself, you should know its dimensions: 45.5″ wide x 108.25″ long x 45.5″ high. Regardless of who this is for, this prospective buyer will need to have deep pockets since the thing costs $4,000.

Trouble Waking Up? This Bed Will Toss You Out!

bed-ejector

There’s two types of people in this world: those who wake up when their alarm rings, and those who snooze themselves into oblivion. If you’re tired of letting your life pass you by because you can’t get yourself out of bed, you might want to consider Colin Furze’s approach: he built the Ejector Bed! When the time comes, it’ll activate two flashing lights, two fire alarms, a firework, two semi truck horns… and then launch you out of bed with a hydraulic lift. The pressure is adjustable, so you can either be gently tilted out, or violently expelled. Either way, you won’t be able to keep on snoozing and your day will lay before you, ready for consumption.

Of course, the Ejector Bed is not something you can buy. But if Colin was able to build it, an enterprising reader could do the same.
