LEGO version of ‘Settlers of Catan’ is PERFECT for brick-lovers and board-game nerds

The iconic game Settlers of Catan is entirely about building a community… so why not go the distance and build the game from scratch using LEGO? This MoC (My Own Creation) from AthleticSkylor088 gives you creative control like never before, letting you build out your game in ways never imaginable previously. By relying on LEGO bricks instead of the conventional 2D board, this unique build lets you turn your game into a brick-based microcosm, with 3D details, plants, fields, humans, animals, and every detail you’d expect from the popular board game!

Designer: AthleticSkylor088

“Starting out with almost nothing, gathering materials, and building settlements is all part of the great game of CATAN. Building your own towns and cities is a lot of fun, so why not play in the form of LEGO bricks?” asks AthleticSkylor088. “Build your very own CATAN board and biomes,” he adds.

The beauty of the board game lies in the fact that it pops out of the board, immersing you in depth and detail. AthleticSkylor088 hasn’t detailed how many bricks are used in this build, but the fact that it’s so hyper-customizable means you can play around with details, make them more realistic or artistic, or even go off the deep end and build a futuristic version with cyberpunk biomes. Although that would stray a little too far from the original, the fact that it’s possible (and that it looks this adorable) is what makes this LEGO build such a charming one.

Mine for ore inside these LEGO mountains

Watch as the sheep graze on the field

Observe the farmers tending to their wheat fields

Avoid the robbers in the desert

Watch the masons molding the bricks

Multiple pieces offer the entire Catan experience, from roads to bricks, timber, and animals.

This, however, isn’t the first time we’ve come across a LEGO version of a playable board game. Many LEGO MoC builders have made a variety of popular games, like chess, Go, Scrabble, and even Monopoly… although one has to admit, there’s a distinct charm to this particular iteration of Catan.

AthleticSkylor088’s LEGO Settlers of Catan board game is currently on the LEGO Ideas forum, where fans and enthusiasts can not only build out their own unique LEGO creations but can even vote for their favorite ones. With 2083 votes under its belt, the LEGO Settlers of Catan is well on its way to hit the coveted 10,000 vote mark, following which it will get an internal review by LEGO’s own team and then will hopefully be turned into a box set that anyone can buy and build. This Wooden-Edition Monopoly Board is Beautiful Enough to Pass Down to Your Grandchildren

An upper-class version of the capitalist’s favorite board game!

The Monopoly Heirloom Edition is a sumptuous reimagining of the classic game. Its solid wood case, elegantly combining rosewood, walnut, and maple inlays, doesn’t just scream quality—it serenades it. This isn’t your typical cardboard and plastic setup. It’s a striking, handcrafted ensemble that includes a wooden banker’s tray, plated die-cast metal tokens, Monopoly money, wood houses and hotels, and custom foil-stamped Chance and Community Chest cards.

The board itself, a delightful blend of walnut cabinet and tiger maple and rosewood veneers, is not just a playing surface but a centerpiece that demands attention. Measuring a substantial 23″ wide x 24″ deep x 4″ high and weighing a hefty 17 pounds, it’s clear that this edition of Monopoly is built to last and to be cherished through generations. My one complaint? It isn’t foldable or travel-friendly.

But it’s not just about aesthetics. This Heirloom Edition is a nod to the timeless appeal of Monopoly, a game that has transcended generations, outliving fleeting gaming trends. Each set, with its rich hardwoods and veneers, gets heirloom status, allowing it to be used, cherished, retained, and passed down from one generation to another (quite like Jumanji but without any of the sci-fi drama). The inclusion of a storage drawer and built-in banker’s tray speaks to the thoughtfulness put into its design, ensuring that all the game components are neatly stored and easily accessible.

Dogs vs. Cats Chess Set: The Battle for Pet Supremacy

Dogs or cats – which makes the best pet? Depends on who and when you ask, but if you ask me on a day my dog pooped on the living room carpet, I’d probably say cats. Ask me on a day that my cat knocked a picture of my wife and me on our wedding day off a shelf and shattered the glass, I’d probably say dogs. But here to settle the debate once and for all comes this Dogs Vs Cats Chess Set available from Uncommon Goods.

The $179 set includes a folding wooden game board that doubles as a storage case for the pieces, and two sets of resin figures: one of dogs, the other of cats. Which would you choose to play as? I always choose the top hat, but that’s just me and chess makes my brain hurt; I’m more of a Monopoly kind of guy. Especially if I can be banker and steal money without getting caught.

I set up a chess board and tried to get my dog and cat to play a game to decide who was the better pet but my cat just swatted the pieces off the board, and my dog started chewing on them once they hit the floor. So who won? Definitely not me, that’s for sure. Maybe my fish will actually take the game seriously…

Thee-Eyed Goat Ouija Board Is Demon-Summoning Ready

Laser carved with an original design created by Denver artist Matt Verges, this three-eyed goat Ouija board is just the thing you need to finally make contact with the demon world. Presumably, in an attempt to have them do your bidding, only to be tricked and your soul enslaved for all eternity. Trust me; I have regrets.

Available from Matt’s Etsy store for $230, the 12″ x 18″ x 0.5″ board is made from ash wood and includes an equally detailed planchette (pointer), so you can actually understand what the demons are trying to tell you. Rest assured, I happen to know they’re quite familiar with the English language. I… have regrets. Did I say that already?

I remember growing up, my best friend had a Ouija board, and we’d play with it late at night during sleepovers. Now, looking back, I have to laugh to not cry at how foolish we were, wielding such incredibly dark power so willy-nilly from the comfort of our blanket fort. Honestly, I feel it’s terribly irresponsible of Hasbro to even sell Ouija boards to anyone who isn’t at least 400 years and/or an undead warlock looking to finally escape the mortal realm.

The Chess board get a portable and inclusive redesign with this paper-based game redesign!

Go Chess or ‘Weiqi’ is a strategic board game that is immensely popular in many East Asian countries, especially China. It’s an intriguing two-player game, wherein both the players attempt to capture and surround more territory than their opponent. However, the traditional game set is often ergonomically difficult to handle. The playing pieces or ‘stones’ are heavy and quite tough to carry and also tend to shift around during the game. Not to mention, it isn’t the easiest game for a blind person to play! Taking all these strenuous factors into consideration, designers Cheng Ka Wing Kavieng, Wei Ruo, Mak Ming Huen, and Wong Cheuk Laam created ‘Poppu’.

Poppu is a portable and tactile Go game that’s set on paper! Inspired by the Kirigami carvings, which is a variation of Origami that includes paper-cutting, Poppu replaces the traditional board and stones duo with a foldable piece of paper! This makes it extremely light, and easy to carry around. The paper is embedded with patterns created by die-cutting and letterpress printing. If you press the pattern downwards and pop it – it is considered as a black stone. If you press and pop it upwards – it becomes a white stone! A flat surface indicates empty or captured stones. The clever pattern system completely eliminates the need for heavy stones. The tactile nature of Poppu makes it super friendly for blind players as well!

Poppu is a light, portable and economical alternative to the traditional Go sets. Not to mention, it’s also inclusive and vision-loss friendly. Plus the fact that it’s crafted from paper also makes it sustainable and recyclable. Products like Poppu could be the future of board games. We can finally cut down on the conventional and expensive game sets that have been around for ages galore, and instead, opt for simpler and pocket-friendly options like Poppu!

Giant Wall-Mounted Risk Game: World Domination on an Epic Scale

Board games: some people take them a lot more seriously than other people. And for those hardcore board gamers, the WS Game Company has created this Giant Wall Edition of Risk. And giant it is, with a framed board that measures 56″ x 42″ and weighs a very respectable 36-pounds. I can already close my eyes and imagine it falling off the wall due to improper hanging on my part.

Available from the Pottery barn for $999, the game includes enough magnetic troops for up to six players. Of course, buying this giant edition of Risk is also going to pose a real-life risk when my wife finds out how much I spent on it. She doesn’t even like playing Risk, she’s more of a Clue or Battleship gal and beats me every game.

My legs are already getting tired just thinking about having to stand and play an entire game of Risk. That game takes hours. No, if I’m going to stand and play a game that game is going to be Twister, and even then I’m not going to be standing for long before I fall and sprain or break something.

Genius plastic covers let you play a game of poker on your iPad while concealing your cards

WonderCover Card Cover for playing Poker on iPad

I hope there’s a Battleship version in the works too!

The most obvious convenience with gaming on an iPad is that you can practically play anything on it. You don’t need to go out and physically buy a board game or order cards online. Everything is just an app-install away… although that comes with an obvious caveat – it isn’t easy playing group games on one iPad. The Wonder Cover comes up with a clever little hack to facilitate better group-gaming on the iPad. The covers are just plastic parts that slide onto the tablet, creating a shielded enclosure to allow players to “protect their hand”.

Perfect for card games like Poker and Uno, or even for Scrabble, the Wonder Cover is a nifty way to bring a physical/personal element to a digital gaming experience. Poker-face not included!

The plastic ‘dugouts’ act as physical barriers, preventing other people from seeing your cards. The fact that they can be clipped on anywhere to the side of a tablet makes them accommodate different games and numbers of players. They can also be used on any tablet, working as well on an iPad as they would on a Galaxy tab or a Microsoft Surface Tab.

Upgrade your weekly game night with these modern versions of your favourite board games!

The pandemic has restricted most of us to our homes, and after a while spending the majority of our time indoors can become quite tedious. We’re always looking for different and interesting ways to spend our time, and pass the day! Especially on the weekends, when our work takes a backseat, and we prefer to avoid crowded bars, restaurants, and other leisure spots. One activity that I find myself indulging in from time to time is board games! Remember those? The intriguing and mindful games we spent most of our summer holidays playing with our friends and families. Board games are a productive means of passing the time, as they go beyond mindless video games, and encourage us to utilize our brain juices, creativity, and vocabulary, whether it’s a game of Chess or Pictionary! However, designers have been adding modern twists and turns to the classic games we spent most of our childhood playing. These innovative games retain the essence of the iconic games of old while making them more entertaining and exciting. From a display tablet that lets you play all your favorite board games virtually to a rollable chess set, each game in this list will take you on a playful trip down memory lane!

With such a classic — instantly recognizable design – how does one reimagine the visual aesthetic of a chessboard? There are chess piece sets modeled after skyscrapers, popular TV characters, mythical creatures, abstract shapes, etc. Many board game creators have experimented with new chess board designs, but this chess + checkers set stands out from the crowd, despite the competition in its arena. What makes the Origins Check – Chess Set different from other interpretations of this classic game design? The set as a whole encapsulates an elegant, minimalistic aesthetic, but the pièce(s) de résistance are the chess figurines themselves. The characters take on simplistic, abstract profiles that represent each piece’s role or how they would move across the board. For instance, the knights are cut into L shapes to indicate their directional movements. The pawns’ roles are reflected in the simplicity of their shape: just rectangular blocks – which can also double as checkers pieces. The abstract nature of this design may alienate beginners, who might not be as familiar with the pieces. However, one could argue that a novice chess player may not want this particular board set in the first place due to the price tag.

The best way to describe the GEMJI is by calling it a game system. This means that GEMJI’s tiles can be used to devise and play multiple types of games for various audiences across all age groups. Younger GEMJI-players can use it to create mazes, while more proficient youngsters can snap multiple tiles together to build complex 3D models. If you’re looking for less of a creative outlet and more of a traditional game, the GEMJI’s black-and-white pieces can be used to play anything from Chess to Draughts, Jenga, Go, Mahjong, Backgammon and even devise your own games along the way! Each GEMJI box-set comes with 70 of those dual-color magnetic tiles, along with a playbook of 30+ games you can play (including GEMJI’s own original games) and an online app that promises many more games with future updates. Moreover, the system can be even used as a framework for learning specific skills – for example – programming fundamentals (yes, there are games for that, too). To make it easy to travel with, the box even packs a traveler’s pouch so that you can carry it wherever you go.

Designed by Arcade1Up, the same group of people who brought back cabinet-style arcade games like Pac-Man, Frogger, Mortal Kombat, TMNT, Street Fighter, Galaga, and other iconic classics to life (seriously, you should check their website out), the Infinity Game Table is the ultimate piece of gaming furniture. Designed to be just like the coffee-table you’d play board games or assemble jigsaw-puzzles on, the Infinity Game Table comes with a touchscreen display built into its surface that lets you play a multitude of board games from Monopoly to Yahtzee, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, Candyland, Hungry Hippos, Tic Tac Toe, and a whole bunch of other games including indie titles (with new ones being added every day). The dynamic display even allows you to assemble jigsaw puzzles, and since everything is virtual (as opposed to physical board games), you can potentially save your progress and continue playing your game after a couple of days, starting where you left off!

What started as a game played with simple DIY chess pieces and a very basic board has ever since seen innumerable iterations – bringing new board styles, set-piece designs, and what not! The game has seen a drastic technological evolution in the form of the Squared Off chess set with self-moving pieces that let you play against opponents from across the world. Yes, as the remote player moves the pieces on his/her board, the pieces move on your board and vice versa. Now, the budding start-up is bringing to the fore a rollable chess set that can be stashed in your backpack or postman bag. The self-moving pieces are not a luxury in this chessboard and for obvious reasons as the technology doesn’t exist wherein you can roll up a board with all the advanced components that make the self-moving magic possible. None-the-less, this new version of Square Off’s chessboard revealed at CES 2021 retains the AI and connected tech – allowing you to play with buddies or complete strangers globally.

Putting Pantone’s deliciously colorful swatches to a different use, Pantone: The Game replaces the drawing element of Pictionary with the ability to depict imagery through Pantone’s color swatches. The game comes with a set of 60 Swatch Cards in 15 different colors, and as many as 132 character cards. The gameplay is simple. Read the card and build the character using Pantone’s swatches. You can use as many as you like, but be warned… more isn’t necessarily better! Overlap cards to create unique shapes and minimalist representations and have your team members guess the answers! There are hints provided too if you’re paired with people who lack a certain artistic and creative sense… there’s always one or two of them. Pantone: The Game is a wonderful way of combining the joy of color with the joy of gameplay. The swatches are inspired by Pantone™, the world’s leading color expert, while the question-cards feature characters from pop culture, with very distinct color palettes.

Baduk or Go is a strategic board game that has fuelled a competitive feud between players for thousands of years, but don’t you think that it’s about time that one of the oldest known board games is due a refresh? Well, Bo offers just that, as it introduces an element of futuristic flair into the unique Asian classic. As opposed to requiring multiple Baduk stones to play, it instead utilizes the engaging and visible properties of light to indicate the positioning of the ‘stones’. This not only creates a clear, fuss-free aesthetic but also allows the colors to create an engaging and captivating visual that transports the wooden-board game into the 21st Century! Every single element of the game has been designed to complement one another and elevate the gameplay; each stone place-matt doubles as a Baduk watch, which, when not in use, neatly resides in the body of the board.

Gridopolis was designed by Dave Schultze, an award-winning designer who believed board games had a tendency to become restrictive and repetitive. With a dynamic gaming surface that exists in 3 dimensions, Gridopolis embraces adventure, prompting you to exercise your creativity to build a multi-level gaming surface. Depending on the game-length and complexity, you can build a board that’s either conforming or completely haphazard… and rather than be restricted to the board you’ve built, Gridopolis even lets you expand your board’s design as you go, adding multiple twists to the game. Gridopolis, in every way, is the antithesis of board games. A combination of building, playing, and overall strategy, Gridopolis even has flexible rules. The box set comes with a set of gaming guidelines, but Schultze encourages people to develop their own rules and strategies. Whether you want to play variations of chess, draughts, ludo, or backgammon, with two, three, even four players, Gridopolis provides you with the framework and ability to build your own board, and design your own game.

The beauty of the Story Creator is that it’s engaging and hands-on. Rather than kids getting their parents to read them stories, the Story Creator really puts the kid in the driver’s seat, prompting them to conjure up a story of their own. The background, plot, and character/item cards help provide a steady framework for the kid to weave their story around, but things get more and more interesting as backgrounds change, new plot-lines emerge, and new characters make their grand entry. Finally, the story is brought to a close with a climax and a finale, resulting in the plot-line being resolved and all the characters getting their happy (or not-so-happy) endings. As the stories develop, kids exercise their creativity on the fly, prompting them to be quick and keep the flow of the story going. This quick-thinking even helps them develop a strong vocabulary in the process!

Founded by Bhavya Gohil and Atur Mehta, Square Off set on a mission to help people play board games like never before. With the Neo and Swap, that’s now possible, allowing you to play with players online, as their moves in a different country or time zone can trigger moves right on your board. You can even play against Square Off’s inbuilt AI that lets you calibrate the difficulty setting. The Neo is restricted to the game of chess, but the Swap, interestingly, lets you play more than one game. The board stays the same, but by simply swapping the Chess pieces for other flat discs, you can play Draughts, Connect 4, or even create your own game using the game’s open-source software. The board, for something as remarkable as it is, is incredibly portable, with a smooth surface and high-quality gaming pieces. It even features a training coach that goes by the name of Viktor (get it, for victory?) that you can interact with. Viktor can compete with you, guide you, and help you understand how to be a better player, so you’re much more skilled the next time you’re playing against the AI, or with your best friend who lives in the other end of the world.

Finally, a board game for cats! All you need to entertain a dog is a stick… A cat, on the other hand, needs something more advanced, like a state-of-the-art laser light. Cats are pretty smart animals. They’re alert, nimble, and have absolutely zero interest in boring toys like chew-sticks or balls. Cats need stimulation, entertainment, and something that’s more of a challenge… which is why the guys at the Cheerble Technology Co. designed a literal board-game for them. Designed to constantly pique a cat’s curiosity, the Cheerble is a board-and-ball combination that is to cats what pinball is to humans. It features a hyperactive vibrating ball that darts around a board, while your cat constantly follows it as a predator follows its prey. At the heart of the Cheerble board game is its ball, a durable ping-pong ball-shaped device with a synthetic fiber coating that almost looks like an abstract mouse. The ball, with built-in motors and lights, can be set to one of three active settings, causing it to dart around chaotically, grabbing a cat’s attention in the process. Paired along with the ball is the Cheerble board, which comes in two variants, both with corrugated cardboard bases – the same material used to make cat-scratching posts.

This children’s board game helps develop their creative storytelling skills!

If the phrase “Kids say the darndest things” was a board game, it would be the Story Creator – a game made expressly to help children develop their creative storytelling skills by giving them everything they need to form a plotline. The Story Creator, apart from being an incredible way to pass time during the pandemic (after all, how much TV can a child really watch?), is a fun way to help children develop and resolve storylines, creating their own fantasy tales with a bunch of characters set against a backdrop. The Story Creator game comes with multiple cards that help kids choose a plot, a background, and roleplayers. The children then use these cards to create complex storylines that only kids can weave. The story progresses as new plots, characters, and backgrounds are revealed.

Each Story Creator board-set comes with multiple character cards, background cards, plot-cards, action cards, emotion cards, and even blank cards to help kids cover all the areas required to build their sensational storyline. Kids can take turns choosing their deck of cards, and building on the existing story, sort of like an Improv session. Moreover, the stories can be turned into videos too, as each card comes with a QR code that can be scanned and imported into the Story Creator app to build visuals around your child’s narrative. The next thing you know, they’ll probably be reading YOU bedtime stories!
