These Eco-Friendly Dog Accessories are good for your pooch and the planet too!

Canadian dog brand Earth Rated has embarked on a transformative journey, collaborating with design agency Layer to redefine its identity and expand its product line. The result is a clean and simple rebrand that not only emphasizes recycling and natural products but also introduces a captivating range of sustainable dog toys. This extensive two-year project represents a commitment to holistic design, integrating sustainability into every aspect of the brand.

Designers: Earth RatedLayer Design (Benjamin Hubert)

At the heart of the rebrand is a simple yet effective brandmark that captures the playful essence of Earth Rated. The brand name, expressed in a minimalistic sans-serif font, features a characterful dog silhouette cleverly integrated into the negative space of the “T” and “H” letterforms. This subtle representation of a dog marks an evolution from the more overt cartoon canine mascot associated with Earth Rated’s origins, reflecting a sophisticated and modern approach.

The new identity is defined by fresh greens and vibrant yellow accents, creating a distinctive and ownable signature. The choice of yellow holds significance beyond aesthetics, as it is one of the few colors visible to dogs, aligning with the brand’s focus on creating products that resonate with our furry companions.

Earth Rated proudly holds B Corp Certification, reflecting its commitment to social and environmental impact. The rebrand by Layer reinforces these sustainable values, with new products crafted from recycled and recyclable materials, post-consumer waste, and natural resources such as natural rubber. Even the packaging is designed with eco-friendliness in mind, utilizing recycled plastics, post-consumer waste, recycled cardboard, and natural ink.

Affordability is a key aspect of the rebrand, making great design accessible to a wide range of dog owners. For instance, the poop bag dispenser retails for just $5.99, while a pack of 315 scented or unscented poop bags is priced at $18.99.

Earth Rated is renowned globally for its distinctive poop bags and dispensers, both of which have been reimagined by Layer. The new poop bag dispenser features an intuitive design with a clip to hold used bags, a textured strap for easy attachment to a leash or bag, and a slot for easy access to the bags. The bags, available in compostable, lavender-scented, and unscented versions, not only offer practicality but also serve as a subtle billboard for the Earth Rated brand as they unroll.

Layer’s influence extends to a new collection of dog toys that celebrates the sustainable values driving Earth Rated. Joyful geometric forms and textured surfaces invite interaction, creating an intuitive user experience for both pets and their owners. The material palette includes recycled and recyclable materials, compostable and post-consumer recycled plastics, and natural rubber. Dishwasher-safe for easy cleaning, these toys are designed to be recycled at the end of their life.

The five toys in the collection—Fly, Tug, Fetch, Treat, and Chew—reimagine classic typologies for added functionality. Each toy offers a unique interaction, from the Fly Toy’s raised rim for easy gripping to the Chew Toy’s twisted form that enables dogs to hold it effectively. The Fetch Toy, with its intersecting forms, adds an element of unpredictability to playtime, keeping both pets and owners engaged.

Designer Benjamin Hubert, leading the Layer team, expressed excitement about collaborating with Earth Rated, emphasizing the project’s rewarding nature. The results, he states, celebrate shared values of responsible, sustainable, and affordable design, marking a significant step in the evolution of Earth Rated and setting a new standard for the pet industry.

This sleek modern pet furniture collection ditches fluff for a stylish blend of comfort and aesthetics!

This line of modern pet furniture from Nicolas Cunsolo features a dog bed, food bowl carrier, and a small toy for your dog to get a day’s worth of fun and relaxation.

Pet furniture tends to embrace fluff over modernity. It makes sense–dogs love the fluff. If they didn’t, our couches would still be intact. But the fluffier the dog bed, the less likely it is to fit in our homes.

Modern dog bed designs have come a long way from prioritizing comfort over versatility. Argentinian industrial designer Nicolas Cunsolo created a line of pet furniture for the modern home that maximizes comfort but doesn’t skimp out on aesthetics.

Cunsolo’s modern pet furniture is constructed with a wooden frame that props up a taut, yet plush cushion where your pup can rest. Designed with a curved base, the collection’s dog bed provides a slight overhang for your dog while they’re resting on the cushion. The pet furniture designed by Cunsolo is made of different materials to provide a flexible, yet rigid feel for the dog bed.

In addition to the dog bed, Cunsolo’s furniture collection comes with a water and food bowl station, composed of a wooden frame with two circular frames that keep bowls in place for your pup to eat and drink from.

The water and food bowl frame also has a wooden build, keeping a dark wood stain and polished look to appeal to more modern kitchens.

When dogs eat and drink from the frame’s bowls, a sliding mechanism angles them to meet your dog’s mouth. The raised platform and sliding mechanism make the bowl frame ideal for aging dogs who have trouble outstretching their necks.

Cunsolo also designed a small toy for dogs to play with that keeps a similar profile to the collection’s dog bed, echoing its curved and taut design. Dogs can play with the collection’s toy for a while, drink water from the raised bowl afterward until they find a bit of respite in the furniture line’s modern dog bed.

From pouncing around with the toy, to a much-needed water break, and finally a power nap, this collection has a little bit of everything.

Conceptualized in three different styles, the dog toy won’t look out of place in the living room.

Clean lines and an overall curved design offers a modern appeal to this collection of pet furniture.

This indoor dog game brings in the outdoors and hides treats for your pet to sniff out!

Keeping pets entertained is a ‘round-the-clock sort of gig. Chew toys get boring too quickly and sometimes dogs might confuse their pent-up energy for a reason to take a walk – forty minutes and two laps around the block in and your dog still hasn’t gone number two, instead only endlessly sniffing and marking territories. While they might not be releasing what we’d like them to, even on those walks, dogs need ways to relieve energy. The constant stimulation that naturally comes with spending time outdoors gives your pup space and time to discharge all their energy, but it also shouldn’t be the only means for that. While taking your dogs on walks should always be encouraged, Gosewalk, a nose work play toy for dogs, offers a playful way for dogs to funnel their pent-up energy that won’t require putting on your outdoor shoes.

Designed by Jihyun Han, Gosewalk consists of two toy pieces, a multi-surfaced mat that resembles the different terrain found outdoors, and a silicone puzzle that stows away dog treats for your pup to sniff and find. The multi-surfaced mat brings the outdoors to your dog with different fabrics resembling different terrains. Twisted and shaggy polyester mimics the look and feel of grass, while tan corduroy and water-repellant canvas brings the colors of sand and soil to your dog’s snout. Pockets and flaps line the mat’s fabrics and provide perfect hiding places for treats and mixtures of herbs and scents to entertain your pup. The silicone puzzle, which seems to be a smaller, more portable companion piece to the bulkier mat, resembles the look of grass through its tender, spring green silicone nubs that grid the toy. Hidden compartments are carved into the silicone puzzle where dog owners can store treats for their pups to sniff out and munch on. Then, in the middle of the puzzle, a darker green, ruffled and leafy centerpiece camouflages yet another hidden storage compartment which can be used to stow away packets of herbal mixtures for dogs to sniff on while hunting for treats. Both parts of Gosewalk, the silicone puzzle, and the mat are washable and also designed to last long, so your pup won’t be able to dig this toy to shreds.

Gosewalk’s origin comes from the merging of three words: grass, nose, and walk. Taking a dog on a walk even one time will show anyone that a dog’s sense of smell is everything. Knowing that dogs make sense of their world through different smells and their memory associated with them, Han centered Gosewalk’s solution concept around the ability to smell and locate. Designed to offer the same effect that comes with taking your dog on walks outdoors, Gosework gives your dog reason to dig and chew and sniff until they’ve found all the hidden treats stored inside. Make sure your pup doesn’t get too good at the game though, treats add up, you know.

Standing up and even running around outside together will surely get the job done, but why get up for exercise when you're perfectly comfortable on the couch? That's the idea behind Go-Go Dog Pals, coined "the funnest most fun way to exercise your dog." Unless you have a few acres to play with beyond the front door, you'll still need to to bring Rover out to the yard before unleashing the wireless gopher look-alike, but there finally appears to be a solution for controlling your dog just as you do your TV -- with a remote. The Go-Go has plenty of pep under the hood, thanks to its dual-motor, four-wheel drive and top speed of 35 kilometers (22 miles) per hour, and it could be yours for the not-so-modest sum of $300. There is a $25 discount on order, if you can pull the trigger by July 1st -- just enter "CHASE" at checkout. Paws-on video is just past the break.
