Palais de Tokyo artisanal objects are open-ended art and functional pieces

When it comes to furniture and accessories, most people probably look for things that are functional rather than just decorative. Of course it would be nice if it can be both but for those that are more concerned about budget and usage, then the former is more important. But there are also products that serve more as decoration or art pieces that also has a secondary function as an actual piece of furniture or accessory that you can use.

Designer: Aequo Design

The OBJ Collection from the Palais de Tokyo is one of those that are derivative products that look more like art pieces that belong in an actual museum. They were commissioned to present the essence of the modern and contemporary art museum into miniature artwork that can still serve some function if the user so wishes to use them. But their purpose or function are actually “open-ended” so it’s up to the user to use them whichever way they want, therefore making them part of the creative process.

For example, the travertine stairs sees several blocks put together as “stairs” so you can use them as a candle holder, bookends, or whatever else you can use it for. The Zinc container, which is made from actual zinc pipes, can serve as a flower vase, pen holder, or even just as a design for your desk if you’re into the aluminum aesthetic. There are other things in the collection like concrete columns, powder coated rod, and a stainless steel pin, which you can use whichever way you want.

The design company says that there are two levels of reading the objects in the OBJ Collection. The first is to your “memory of the place”, which probably means how you interacted with the artwork in the Palais de Tokyo. The second level is where the function of the object comes in. It would be interesting how they will actually be used by people who buy these artisanal pieces.

A desk to kill for

Good Design is thorough, down to the last detail” – Dieter Rams.

The Functional Integrated desk is the dream workplace for the product designer. Not just because it looks amazing, but because it takes into account every detailed task an industrial designer may need to perform in their workplace, from sketching to modeling, from prototyping to documenting. The beauty of this workplace truly lies in its holistic approach.

Kimono Sleeping Bag: Wear It, Sleep In It, Stay Warm

Kimono sleeping bag

Kimono? Check. Sleeping bag? Check. Bag full already? Yep. It’s always best to pack light when you’re traveling or camping because nobody wants to lug around a bulky or heavy backpack. If you had a choice between bring a jacket and a sleeping bag, or something that combines both in one neat little package, then which would you go for?

If you chose the latter, then that would be the aptly-named Kimono Sleeping Bag. It is both a kimono that you can wear to stay warm, and a sleeping bag that you can sleep in when night rolls around.

Flexibler is an Umbrella That Stands

Standing Umbrella

There are many reasons why most people prefer folding, automatic umbrellas. For one, they’re more compact and expand with a simple push of a button. They’re less of a pain to carry around and you don’t have to deal with one problem that people with regular umbrellas have: trying to make it stand when it’s prompted against a wall or table.

Solving this first-world problem are Liang-Hock Poh and Ming-Hung Lin, who came up with the Flexibler. It’s basically an umbrella with a flexible, adjustable handle that you can bend and twist this way and that to stabilize it when you want to make it stand.

When you’re ready to use it again, the handle can be bent back to its original position. The Flexibler is a 2013 Red Dot Award: Design Concept winner.

Dress Shirts Featured Reinforced Tails For Better Bottle Opening

reinforced-shirt-tail-

You’re supposed to be able to open a bottle of beer by twisting the cap off, but lets face it: your baby smooth hands don’t always enjoy it. Those sharp edges dig deep and while you keep a straight face because you don’t want to be made fun of, you secretly wish you had a shirt like the above Long Sleeve Button-down from Austin, Texas-based Criquet. Why? Because the front tails feature an extra layer of fabric strategically placed to make it easier to twist off bottle caps, which the company calls “The Bendle Sleeve”. Unfortunately, the shirts from this company are also really expansive at $85. Presumably you’re getting some good quality fabric, but we’d like to suggest a better alternative for easy beer bottle opening: use your hands on something other than a keyboard now and then!

Doodle-an-AC

Functional Window AC is a lighter-side-of-life take on window ACs and the general concept of owning updated appliances. With innovations in technology and frequent design changes, most window air conditioners get outdated pretty fast. By equipping this concept with a blank sketching surface, the designer suggests that we design our own AC covers and keep them updated with doodles and current themes.
