Denim-covered furniture and gym equipment are a striking nod to the iconic material

It may now be a common sight on jeans, jackets, and even some bags, but there was a point in history when denim was considered revolutionary and cool. It has been and still is plastered on billboards and advertisements for casual wear, but denim was once a symbol of the American dream. From miners to cowboys to blue-collar workers, denim jeans have been worn by people from all walks of life, striving to make a living and establish a home for their families. The way we live today is drastically different from those times, yet denim remains a staple of clothing, and this almost eccentric collection of homeware and other projects pay tribute to the material in a way that reflects how much has changed over the decades.

Designer: Harry Nuriev

As a material, denim is known for its rugged looks and properties that have made it favorable in certain rough conditions. Of course, denim clothing today has more or less become a staple of casual wear all over the world, but for a very long time, it has been a classic American symbol that was associated with workers and the middle class. Times have changed, and so have the way we live and work, and these denim-clad products convey that fact in an interesting new way.

The pieces are already unique and distinctive on their own. After all, who would have dreamed up gym equipment covered in this blue fabric? A relatively soft DJ booth is also a bit ironic when you think about it, and a denim wall paneling almost makes you want to run into it for fun. Other objects are a bit more understandable, like tables and chairs that give off a sense of comfort even just by looking at them.

The collection, however, seems to also make a statement about the modern lifestyle, especially where “home” has become as much a place of activity as it is of rest. The denim pool bed set, for example, seems to embrace anything and everything that you do at home, whether it’s sleeping, eating, working, or connecting with family and friends. It is the extreme manifestation of our hybrid work life after the COVID-19 pandemic, where borders and divisions are torn down, for better or for worse.

Denim today has become a part of both everyday wear as well as the haute-couture world, but it also once symbolized the American dream. It has left an indelible mark on human culture, and this odd yet beautiful selection of furniture and products for the home honors that history while also emphasizing how much denim is part of everyday life, at home, at work, and work-from-home.

Rubik Stool is a seat and shelf concept to fit into smaller spaces

Those who live in relatively small houses or apartments (like me) are always looking for furniture and appliances that are meant for spaces like that. And while a lot of the products we do find are just concepts or prototypes, it’s nice to dream of getting things like these in my place. Well, if they ever get made into actual products of course. But a seat that can double as storage that can be turned into a shelf? I’m all for this.

Designers: Jeonghwan Shin and Hyunbin Yang

When you hear the word Rubik, it brings to mind something that can be turned whatever which way and can still be functional. Well, the Rubik Stool is somewhat like that as it can be “turned, flipped, and combined” so you can use it for whatever purpose you may have in your house. The furniture is specifically designed for spaces that cannot accommodate a sofa or shelves to store books, magazines, and other smaller knick-knacks.

If what you need is somewhere to sit, you can have it upright with the seat on top. But you can also use the underlying part as storage for things like shoes, magazines, or whatever it is that you don’t mind being under your seat. If you want it to become a mini shelf, you just flip it over and now you have two layers where you can place books, toys, plants, or even some decorations. It’s not exactly modular but it can serve multiple purposes.

The prototype they made was made from banded plywood with a patterned wood film finish. Hopefully, this is sturdy enough to hold an actual grown human being who will sit on it, maybe even for a prolonged time, although it doesn’t seem to be made for long sitting. The Rubik Stool does look pretty decorative and should fit in with your wood aesthetic, if and when it gets made into something you can actually buy.

Revisit the ancient art of woodturning with this line of furniture that gives a modern take to traditional design!

“A different turn,” is a line of furniture pieces created by Koen Boersma from the art of woodturning, an ancient craft that’s Boersma revives through modern design and traditional tools.

The craft of woodturning has been around for centuries, but today, the art is slowly dying out. For as long as it’s been in use, the art of woodturning has varied in form over the years. Only requiring a few woodworking tools, like a lathe and cutters, woodturning can transform wood blocks into an array of different shapes and patterns. Returning to the ancient craft to design their new series of furniture, Koen Boersma created “A different turn,” a line of furniture produced from Boersma’s modern take on woodturning.

Starting out with a rectangular block of wood, Boersma spins each piece into alternating patterns of round and square shapes. Boersma describes the process, “When making this series, the rectangular shape of the starting piece was used, and patterns were developed from this shape.” Spurred by the Netherlands’ specific love for and connection to the craft of woodturning, Boersma turned to traditional tools and cultural building methods for the foundation of “A different turn.”

Beginning with a single, rectangular block of wood, Boersma creates undulating patterns to expose the wood block’s natural, unstained grooves and grains. In showcasing each block of wood’s natural grain, each piece of furniture is unique in its own light. Describing this in their own words, Boersma explains, “The patterns on the straight, black flat sides of the objects flow into the soft, round shapes of the turned away wood. A confluence of the designer’s signature, and the natural beauty of the wood itself.”

This Transforming Robotic Furniture Going From Bed To living room setup Is The 2021 Investment We Need!

This past year has seen some pretty innovative work from home office solutions. But working from home is not all about work! In fact, the majority of our time oscillates between procrastination and clearing up home space to resemble that Instagram influencer’s tidy organized home setup. Fluffing cushions, folding throws, and making the bed is the first step that, if skipped, causes a residual tension you feel every time you walk past that untidy space and one thing’s for sure, you don’t need that!

Meet Ori’s latest bed that drops any time you want to drop! We love furniture design that saves space because space/building efficiency is key to climate change. Ori, an MIT-based startup has been a key factor in helping us look at designs a new way, Ori’s Cloud Bed, Sofa edition is giving us our Instagram goals, without the folding up you don’t want to do! Accurately called Cloud Bed because it drops from the ‘skies’ when you wish to sleep, this innovative piece can be a game-changer for tiny homes, urban apartments, and more. Logic dictates that for any person, only one product will be in use at a time – either their bed or the couch. Keeping this in mind, Ori’s bed hides in the ceiling when not in use during the day and reveals a complete living room setup underneath it – a couch as well as a matching coffee table. No more making the bed needed!

Brooklyn-based brand, Ori, adds this ceiling bed to complete its range of expandable closets and offices which are all created around the notion of minimizing space while maximizing functionality and never compromising on the aesthetics! Taking inspiration from the Japanese art of Origami, Ori is the need of the hour and finally gives you an easy way to Netflix, chill, and sleep without cramping on your tiny couch!

This modular office desk transforms into a minimal hanging display when not in use

Content creation is a task that is more difficult than it looks. You may think creating content is simple, but expressing yourself successfully and meeting the demands of your fans is a challenging task requiring TONS of focus. And what is the first step to focusing correctly – your workspace. Everything right from the ambient light setting to the ergonomic desk setup plays a part in their work. Desk space is sacred, be it the animation master Miyazaki’s cluttered organization or the clean and organized setup of your favorite Instagram influencer. Among the limitless options for home office desk setups, design student Alphee Grand from Paris, France, has come up with a refreshing solution that makes complete sense in current pandemic stricken times.

Named the “Program” this modular desk is ideal for creative individuals who love the freedom of organizing their desk as per their needs. Depending on the task at hand or the kind of tools required, the desk comes equipped with various cubbyholes and hanging spaces for you to get creative, literally! The different storage modules can be suitable for storing files, documents, or even your favorite magazines or sketches. In addition, the desk has a large storage box and a two-part table to further extend the modularity aspect. I find the design an eclectic mix of structure yet chaos – it has enough options to create an organized workspace or to embrace the chaos – it gives you the freedom to make your desk setup work for you.

The most fun aspect of this modular furniture design is the air of openness to it. The side section of the desk has stepped storage modules which feel more like an extended “me space.” We can hang headphones on it or favorite novels displayed on the compact metal storage elements – always in the purview of the peripheral vision. We can tweak the central section of the Program desk for artistic chores like sketching, which is another significant advantage, especially for artists. Finally, when you want to close up for the day, we can collapse the Program’s desk section and make it a display for all your hanged memorabilia, courtesy of the wheels on the underside!

Disguised as furniture, these simple pieces doubles as fitness equipment for working out from home

If anything, this past year has shown us that the possibilities are endless when it comes to home fitness. With a little creativity, cinder blocks transform into dumbbells, stacks of books become kettlebells, and packed backpacks can work as weights for leg raises. Since cinder blocks don’t exactly make for the most eye-catching pieces of interior design, Japanese sports brand Mizuno released a line of home furniture that doubles as exercise equipment, like stools that use resistance pumps for impromptu squat sessions.

Presented as a cushioned coffee table with a rich hardwood top, the Le Coeur table also functions as a shoulder-stretching device. Two knobs punctuate the center of La Coeur’s top surface and work as grips for the table’s top surface to rotate, loosening up your shoulder muscles the same way arm circles warm them up. Then, when the stretching is through, the coffee table remains a functional piece of chic home furniture that blends into most living spaces with its ash-gray padding. Similarly, Mizuno’s Le Moignon poses as an inconspicuous ottoman with foot straps lining its sides that morph the furniture into a weight for leg raises and thigh crunches, or a stretching device for your feet and toes.

Sporting a minimalist color scheme and cushioning, La Coeur and Le Moignon make up two pieces for Mizuno’s larger Healthy Interior home furniture line. In addition to the ottoman and coffee table, Mizuno’s new sports line consists of Ringretch, a chair cushion that becomes an exercise ring for strength-resistance training, Abs Pulule, or a cushioned seat that trains your core, recalibrating your sacrum and the back of your pelvis, as well as Les Plie Squat, a minimalist office stool that enacts a central resistance pump for squatting.

Designer: Mizuno

Made up of more than six different pieces, Mizuno’s new healthy furniture line including a coffee table, ottoman, floor seat, office stool, chair cushion, and weighted hand pillows.

Le Coeur presents as a coffee table that doubles as a shoulder-stretching device.

Le Moignon functions as an ottoman as well as a weight for leg raises and stretching.

Ringretch functions as a chair cushion that transforms into a weight for thigh and core-focused exercises.

The Pulule works as a cushion for sitting on the floor as well as a trainer to strengthen the core and back muscles.

Les Plie is first an office stool that uses a central resistance pump for vertical squatting.

Snuggle-worthy sofa designs that combine form, functionality and aesthetics!

For me, a great, not even good, but a GREAT sofa design is extremely imperative for a home space, and especially my home space. I mean, imagine you’ve had a rough day, and you come home to sink into a sofa…that isn’t super cozy and comfy? That simply does not sit right with me. But besides being super cozy and comfy, a great sofa must also be ergonomically designed, provide good lumbar support and aesthetically match your interiors! Not to mention it should also be easy to maintain, to an extent. The criteria for a great sofa design are plenty, but finding one is another ball game altogether. Hence, we’ve curated a collection of sofa designs that meet all our requirements for a top-notch sofa!

The Lawless Sofa by Evan Fay is a complete mind twister. A concoction of swirling masses hoisted on a metallic base. Something about it just makes me want to dive right into it! It’s hands down one of the most creative sofas I’ve come across, and although I’m unsure of how comfy it maybe if I have to sit on it for long, it definitely is an eye-catching piece that will be the topic of many conversations. It can really be deemed as a piece of art!

lift_bit_sofa_2

lift_bit_sofa_33

The Lift-Bit sofa is nothing short of magical. Designed by Carlo Ratti Associati and Opendot, and premiered at the Milan Design Week this year, it looks like an unsuspecting sofa but has a vastly better user experience than any sofa you’ll see. Just hover your hand above the cushion and the sofa height adjusts, moving up and down, based on where you move your hand. The sofa comes as a single yet modular unit. Pair multiple pieces together and you have yourself a completely customizable 3D playground that also serves as comfortable seating!

For the benefit of every working from home couch potato, recognized Portuguese designer João Teixeira has designed Brick Sofa that offers additional convenience while working. For over a year now, we have been working from home. In the interim, if you have found the best corner to work out of, you may want to add a table or two from Teixeira’s collection. Otherwise, for some reason, the best I can guess being comfort; if you’re working from your sofa still – Teixeira’s Brick love seat with armrest attached in the center supporting a swivel shelf to place your equipment is by far the most practical option out there.

The inspiration behind the Dog House Sofa is pretty noble. In an attempt to raise awareness about the ever-increasing number of abandoned dogs, Seungji created the Dog House Sofa “to enhance the harmony between humans and their pets”. The sofa is the first design for the pet furniture brand “mpup”. Created out of solid wood ash and fabric upholstery, the sofa can seat two people. The entire piece is draped in neutral shades of beige and mocha, so no jarring colors to alarm your pet!  The wooden armrest also doubles as a cozy hideaway for your pets. It’s a private section where they can laze around, with an opening in the armrest, allowing them to sneakily cuddle up to you!

Titled the ‘Pallet Thief’, this wooden throne was created by Anton Brunberg in response to a question he once had – “How to still celebrate the pure joy of making and craftsmanship without having to use up the planet’s precious raw materials?” Just by Anton’s calculations, there are roughly six billion pallets in circulation worldwide, most of which are made of wood. Each year, one percent of those pallets (approx 60,000) reach the end of their lifespan or are lost. By tapping into this industrial global supply, Anton discovered a way of turning unusable waste from one industry into raw material for another industry. The ‘Pallet Thief’ is certainly no ordinary piece of furniture, but then again, it’s a vision and a proof of concept for Anton, who aimed at showing the potential this recycled pallet wood has in the furniture-design world. It comes with hundreds of pallet planks joined together before the seat is carved out of the central mass.

With a voluminous yet hollow frame, the Shell sofa is instantly visible. It is, in a strictly physical sense, minimalist (because it’s mainly hollow), but visually, the Shell sofa is almost pillowy, spacious, and a treat to look at. The sofa is a frame that curves from the left to the back and to the right, with space in between for cushions, or even two side tables if you remove the cushions at the extreme ends. It’s visually imposing, but still manages to look light and airy, thanks to its wickerwork of metal rods. The interwoven rods also create this moire effect that creates a dynamic optical illusion, making the Shell sofa’s body incredibly interesting to look at… and while we’re on the subject of interesting, the sofa comes with two small openings at the beginning and end of its structure, making it perhaps the most entertaining play area for a domestic cat.

Since we spend most of our time in our homes (especially in 2020), we might as well make those spaces as comfortable and relaxing as possible. One problem that the massage chair business has not solved yet is creating space-efficient furniture. Massage chairs are often bulky, and they might not match the aesthetic of your existing furniture. The solution proposed by the Dong Dong sofa is to create a piece of furniture that just happens to include a massager. Based on the couch’s design alone, I would buy this product. Its plush, buoyant cushions and its bright yellow color would make for a great statement piece. The design pulls inspiration from a classic inflatable pool tube, which you can see in the couch’s large, bouncy cushions.

IKEA and Tom Dixon collaborated together to create ‘Delaktig’. Delaktig is a two in one modular sofa and bed! The design can be modified into different styles of furniture according to personal needs and requirements. The unique design can function as a sofa system for homes and even airports, a double-decker bed, and a raft. The modular piece of furniture “explores notions of adaptability and future-proofing”. Minimal, clean, and multifunctional, this is a sofa design that can cater to diverse furniture requirements.

Blå Station, Thomas Bernstrand, and Stefan Borselius collaborated to create a flexible and modular sofa named ‘Bob’. Quite like its name, Bob is a simple and sturdy sofa with narrow cushioned slices. It’s amped with six diverse modules, allowing you to customize and arrange it into various settings – from a single-person armchair to a long creative sofa formation. Bob provides unlimited options with a limited number of modules! Who knew home furniture could be this fun?

Imagine sinking into a couch that envelopes you from the sides and gives you a true “quiet space.” This multifunctional couch called the Transformer SHELL Sofa is inspired by Art Deco and tries to mimic the modularity of the form. The sofa is encompassed with a ‘sink’, whose colors can be changed from a retro white and grey combo to modern dark grey and black. Teamed with accessories that are in brass and bright red, the sofa is a delight!
