Sonic The Hedgehog 2-themed Xbox Series S controllers are a big no-no for sweaty gamers

Xbox is all set to release a limited-edition Hedgehog-themed Xbox Series S console and furry controllers to celebrate the premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie set for April 8, 2022 release.

Limited edition Xbox controllers are not something new, but this one is right up there with the most eye-popping yet bizarre creation. Co-developed by Microsoft and Paramount Studios, this creation is for diehard Sonic the Hedgehog fans. The Xbox Series S is draped in a black hue with the big iconic golden ring around the vent. The image of Sonic and Knuckles in emotion is embossed on the front. If you thought that was cool enough wait till you glance over at the controllers.

Designer: Microsoft and Paramount Studios

The gaming controllers are something that got me bamboozled right away, and probably the reason why I’m writing this piece. Coming from the house of Microsoft, these controllers are as outrageous as the brand will ever get. Why I say that is because they are covered in a thick layer of furry-colored hair. One has the cool blue texture of the Sonic’s hair while the other bears the striking red texture emulating Knuckles’ fur. It goes without reasonable doubt, these controllers will be dirt magnets and definitely not meant for sweaty palms.

These limited-edition bristly controllers have frankly swept me off my feet for their sheer out-of-the-box (not Xbox’ish) thinking. While a major chunk of the controller designs follows the proven wisdom of going with a smooth plastic feel matched with the matte buttons and joysticks, this one by Microsoft is totally on the flipside. Gaming on these will be a little tricky as after a while you might have yourself a controller all sticky and gooey – imagine playing a high stakes FPS game with that feeling, eww! That said, I would have appreciated if the console also got the furry treatment – of course not around or over the vents!

The fuzzy combo can be a part of your collection via the official contest aimed to promote the movie. The international version of the contest requires the gamers to retweet with the hashtag #XboxSonic2Sweepstakes while interested contestants in North America need to spend Microsoft Reward points earned through gameplay.

LEGO Sonic The Hedgehog set comes with a highly detailed track and even the evil Dr. Eggman

Yet another collection born from the highly creative LEGO Ideas community, the Sonic The Hedgehog Green Hill Zone is a 1,125-piece set inspired by SEGA’s hit videogame (which also translated to the silver screen). Owing to Sonic’s flat, cartoonish, ‘sidescrolling endless runner’ game design, the LEGO set translates wonderfully into real life, with the overall diorama looking incredibly similar to the actual game! Named after the Green Hill Zone, the first and most iconic level in the Sonic The Hedgehog videogame, the LEGO kit comes completely detailed with a stretch of track that’s dotted with palm trees, coins, lever-activated spring jumps, and even a loop! There are even obstacles to jump over/through, including 7 rings, and 5 TVs with interchangeable sticker-based screens! Characters in the set include Crabmeat, Motobug, Dr. Eggman (with his spaceship), and obviously, our favorite sapphire-tinted speedster, Sonic!

The LEGO Sonic The Hedgehog Green Hill Zone is perfect for any videogame buff. Its brilliantly detailed design feels almost like a screenshot from the real game, and you can even customize the track by shifting elements and characters around, or extend it by procuring another box-set! If you personally ask me, this one definitely calls for a short, cute stop-motion video!

Sonic the Hedgehog Head Plush: Sonic the Headshog?

I don’t know about you, but I’m used to seeing Sonic the Hedgehog with his head attached to his body. But if you don’t mind having a decapitated blue hedgehog head sitting on your couch, then you might want to grab this colorful plush toy from Tomy and Club Mocchi- Mocchi.

The 15″ plush collectible is a Target exclusive and sells for $29.99. The soft and squishy hedgehog head looks incredibly huggable and would look great in your game room alongside all of those other video game characters who have had their heads separated from their bodies. What? You don’t have any other plush heads lying around? Well, you’d better get your scissors out and start cutting up your stuffed animal collection now.

I think that Sonic’s Spin Dash move would be much more efficient if he was only a head.

LEGO to Produce a Sonic the Hedgehog Playset: Start Saving Your Gold Rings

Because dreams occasionally do come true, a Sonic The Hedgehog themed LEGO playset originally proposed by LEGO Ideas user toastergrl (aka 24-year old Viv Grannell) has garnered the necessary 10,000 supporters on the website and approval by LEGO to become an actual product. Wow, 10-year old me is so excited right now! Also: current me.

LEGO is still finalizing the set’s design, although I hope it’s as close to Viv’s original “Green Hill Zone” submission as possible because that looks like a fun playset. Just not to step on – especially not Doctor Robotnik’s drill hands. My toes curled in pain just thinking about it.

Did you watch the Sonic The Hedgehog movie that came out last year? I liked it. And apparently so did enough other people for Paramount to decide to make a sequel, currently set for release April 8th, 2022. Race you to the theater! Get it? Because Sonic runs so fast. I know, with gems like that I’m surprised they didn’t hire me to write it.
