Handmade Samurai-inspired randoseru backpack looks pretty but heavy

There is a certain fascination that people have with the Japanese art of the samurai, whether it’s through movies, books, anime, and even just the accessories in general. Combining it with other Japanese cultural things will appeal to a certain market, even if those things may just be decorative and not totally functional.

Randoseru are leather backpacks used by Japanese school children that are made to last for years. But this particular version of the backpack is probably not something you’d let your kid use or even you yourself would use. It is hand-crafted and intricately designed, inspired by the samurai tradition. The yellow, black, and red backpack would have looked right at home in the 11th century, if there were expensive, leather bags back then.

Leather craftsman Noriki Okada created this bag from scrap pieces from other bags and have some accents like small leather plates and brass rivets. There are even faces of oni demons on the sides to add to the samurai theme. The manufacturer, Murase Kabanko, says that they are recommending that you just use this for “decorative purposes” although you can of course use it if you don’t mind carrying something that looks heavy and ornate.

Each bag that they are selling is handmade so you would have to wait around 6 months for it to get to you. And of course it’s expensive given all that. If you have around $3,300 and are a collector of samurai inspired things, go for it.

Split box cutter concept has a neat trick for keeping spare or dull blades

Box cutters, or simply cutters, are a common sight in any office or workshop. The basic design hasn’t changed much over the years, with the most common style using a long segmented blade where you can snap off a section when it has become dull. This simple design, almost like a stackable “push-point” pencil, offers an efficient mode of operation, but not without its drawbacks.

One big problem is that the actual section of the blade you can actively use might be too small since you can’t push it out too much or it will snap and break if you apply too much pressure. A single, unbroken blade might still be the most stable design, but it’s also the most wasteful. This concept tries to find a middle ground by employing a rather unorthodox design for a box cutter.

Given how you need to have a secure and firm hold on a cutting tool, you might presume that you need a large unibody handle design. As small EDC knives and cutters have proven, however, that’s necessarily the case. And just because something comes in parts that can be separated doesn’t mean that it will be structurally unsound and unreliable.

Split is a concept that uses these ideas to design a cutter that can split into two halves. It isn’t just a gimmick, though, as the upper half houses the currently “active” blade while the other half holds spare blades or blades you have removed but have yet to throw away. It suggests a box cutter that’s still self-sufficient yet more efficient than current designs, at least in theory.

The cutter still uses a retractable mechanism to deploy the blade, but you will have a larger blade to work with. This means you can push it out further without worrying that the blade will break along its segment when applying force. At the same time, you still just have a short blade, so you don’t need to throw a long blade should it become dull.

The Split box cutter concept houses those replacement or used blades in the lower half. The concept doesn’t exactly mention it, but you might be able to store more than one blade there. The blades seem to be clamped down to keep them from moving inside, and a simple screw loosens or tightens the cover. The one disadvantage to this design is that you might need some other object or your fingernail to turn that screw.

The cutter concept has a rather asymmetrical design when the two halves are connected, with one part extending a bit further than the other. This imbalance almost creates a jimping part or at least a finger rest, allowing you to hold the cutter with a firmer and more confident grip.

Carl Pei is making strong inroads into the consumer electronics and gadgets space with the smartphone and earbuds that have improved a lot from the inaugural versions when the company was launched. The Nothing Ear (a) has been topping the charts of budget earbuds that punch way above their weight, competing with the more premium options.

While the brand is keeping its portfolio strongly knitted in the gadget ecosystem (and I presume it’ll stay that way for a long time) a designer has envisioned a Nothing hair dryer that’ll have you looking your best with that luscious mane. Since this is one personal care accessory that you keep always handy, it better be stylish. So, what better than the Nothing’s see-through persona?

Designer: Will Parsons

Nothing is all about monochrome colors in a transparent aesthetic with a dash of signature red. Will has emulated those elements with perfection in this concept design that might not be an official product in the brand’s line-up, still, it could inspire a knock-off version in the big marketplace. The tasteful housing showing off the internal components is complemented by the glyph interface around the power and speed buttons. This glyph interface also indicates the charge levels of the hairdryer. The curvaceous design of the motor housing with the stainless steel inlets adds an industrial design element to the mix.

As per Will the Nothing hair dryer is fully ambidextrous and makes use of a centrifugal fan setup to suck air through the rear intake. This cools down the battery before flowing through the front heating element. The placement of the fan allows for a more slimmer look that other dryers which is a huge advantage.

While Dyson currently owns the closet space with options like Supersonic, this hair dryer is nothing less than impressive. It gives off the vibe of a classic muscle car modded to add more firepower under the hood and visual beef with the curves at the right places.
