Meet the Blossom, an award-winning ceiling fan with a minimalist flower-inspired aesthetic

Ceiling fans never got their ‘Dyson’ moment… for the most part, they’re still the same boring-looking bladed structures that spin from your ceiling. The Blossom challenges their age-old aesthetic with fresh, nature-driven inspiration.

Titled Blossom, for the way it looks like a blossoming flower in the center of your ceiling, this fan + lamp was designed for the discerning Indian market that’s currently saturated with ‘boring’ fans that look like ‘engineered appliances’ that hang from your ceiling. The Blossom adds a breath of fresh air (quite literally) to the category, by creating a fan that’s just as aesthetic as it’s functional.

The Blossom Fan is a winner of the Red Dot Product Design Award for the year 2022.

Designer: Ticket Design for Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals

The Blossom fan replaces the traditional blade with a more organic petal-inspired form that still drives air efficiently. There are no engineering details, no rivets, no fixtures in sight. The entire fan takes on the role of a kinetic sculpture, with a dimmable light right at the center. On the inside, a quiet brushless DC motor powers the appliance, giving the entire experience a complete upgrade.

Google Nest Ceiling Fan is all-in-one smart hub that ties together all devices in your smart home

I’m sure the concept of smart home has already touched you. And you have thermostats, smart lights and many other smart devices set up at home trying to do their bit. Standalone, all these smart products would do a great deal in making life simpler, but unfortunately, having different devices doing their tasks can become slightly cluttered and cumbersome. To add more finesse to a modern home, a Nest Ceiling Fan – designed for Google’s collective of smart home devices – has been embedded with a range of these devices to eliminate the clutter and make your chick ceiling fan the ultimate smart home hub.

Just like our appliances, ceiling fans have also received smart treatment in the past. The Nest Ceiling fan is a productive and more interesting take on the other smart fans that can only be turned on and off through a smart assistant. This new adaptation of a ceiling fan designed for the Google Nest lineup has been conceived as an all-in-one smart hub that would tie up all the smart products you have spread across each room in the house. The compact and stylish two-fin fan with omni-directional speaker, smart light bulb, sensors for the thermostat, and a smoke detector and alarm will replace each of the mentioned devices for good and leave you with a single contact point to create an interesting smart home setup.

Designer: Joseph Morlote

Arguably, ceiling fans offer a very limited cooling relief. If you live in a warmer climate, you’d definitely prefer air conditioning over a ceiling fan; though using a ceiling fan with an air conditioner will help improve efficiency and eventually allow you to lower the energy costs. There is no denying the fact that fans carry out cooling at a much cheaper price point and therefore a fan dangling from the ceiling in the center of the room is a nice vantage point to perhaps act as a unified hub for all your smart home requirements.

As a ceiling fan with a smart speaker, light, thermostat and spoke detector onboard, the Nest Ceiling Fan will allow you to interact through the Google Assistant/app to just one device, thus ensuring you don’t need these products installed separately anywhere in the house. Providing a perfect balance of performance and smart design, this fan in addition to offering cool air, will disperse music from your playlist in every direction of the room with a click of a button or your voice command.

Ideal for replacing the smart light bulb and traditional wall switches, you are using, the ceiling fan has its own LED light bulb that contains software to connect to a smart home assistant, an app, or some other mobile devices and can automate your lights so you can control it remotely. It is also embedded with a thermostat to automate the central heating system or an integrated smart smoke detector that can alert everyone with a warning alarm in case of a fire in the house.

It is a prerequisite for the multifunctional Google Nest Ceiling Fan to be equipped with microphones so that it can hear your commands to the Google Assistant from across the room. However, the microphone could be used for eavesdropping! Smart home products including those from Google, are notorious for constantly listening to our conversations, as they are always on the lookout for wake word “Hey Google.” I’m assuming, the fan will not include a camera as sitting right above the head it would have a terrible vantage point, so the risk of privacy breach there is lower. But even if we were to consider that the microphones would have compromised reception (owing to their high positioning), the mics will be listening to us perpetually and storing information in the cloud. You would have to make an effort to turn the mics off when not required, which could limit the fan’s productivity as smart hub around the clock.

The otherwise effectively designed Nest Ceiling Fan comes in the existing color theme of Google products, which is guaranteed to lighten up the mood and blend with the interiors of the room where it is installed. The installation is going to be somewhat complicated with all the wiring and drilling required, but that’s going to be the case with any ceiling fan, and it’s only a one-time cost for your smart home’s future with a ceiling fan hub as smart as this.

R2-D2 X-Wing Ceiling Fan: Use the Downforce

Until I saw this picture, I wanted one of those Big Ass Fans to hang on my ceiling. But now that I’ve seen this awesome Star Wars fan – made by a Star Wars fan, I want one of these instead.

Redditor Marcus Nery shared this sweet fan which features X-Wing fighter wings for its fan blades, and R2-D2’s domed lid hanging down underneath. It’s even got illuminated eyes, or whatever you call those lights on a droid’s noggin.

Sadly, you can’t go to the local Home Depot and buy one of these, but you could certainly copy the idea. Just gotta make sure you keep those fan blades perfectly balanced, or there could be trouble. So now what I really want is a Big Ass Fan Star Wars Edition.

Prepare to Hate your Ordinary Ceiling Fan!

orbit_ceiling_fan_layout

Ahhhh, ceiling fans! Hate ’em, but gotta have ’em. What do you choose? To suffer from hot, stale air OR to kill your room’s vibe? It’s a tough choice and many of us cave in for comfort. The Orbit fan, however, offers an entirely new solution to air circulation that’s a whole lot easier on the eyes.

The clever creation takes on the form of a gyroscope. It’s at once artistic and functional, with moveable sections that are enchanting to watch. Better yet, it differs from traditional ceiling-mount fans in that it can rotate in any direction to direct air exactly where you want it. This is especially useful for people who enjoy the circulation but don’t want to be blasted by air while they sleep or for circulating air in a dining area without blowing air on warm food.

This Fan Sucks!

fantone_01

Literally… it blows and sucks! As more urban-based companies lean toward work-from-home policies, so does the need to have better indoor air quality at home. Designed with this in mind, Fan Tone by designer Hyojeong Lee is an interesting twist on the ceiling fan that does double duty as an indoor air cleaner that rids your home of harmful particles.

It can easily replace any existing fan or installed as a new fixture as it integrates into any standard electrical system. The unit utilizes a HEPA filter system and directly targets air where it matters most. Its fan system also ensures air is circulated for more comprehensive cleaning that stretches beyond room boundaries. It’s also equipped with wireless connectivity so it can relay information to a smartphone app that will give you real-time air quality stats. This also means it can work in tandem with any smart climate control system to provide more efficient cooling during summer months. No one would blame you for not wanting a big, bulky, asymmetrical object as the focal point of your room… but the idea of combining ceiling fans with air-cleaning tech is long overdue!

Transforming Ceiling Fan: More than Meets the Eye

Check out this video that demonstrates the Fanimation Air Shadow ceiling fan. This thing is basically a Transformer for your ceiling. The blades stay retracted until it gets up to speed, then they spread out. I just can’t think of a good Transformer name for it. Spin-imus Prime? Arm-itron?

It looks like it moves a lot of air. Which is what it should do. It also looks like it could seriously chop your head off when it gets up to speed, which it should not do. Definitely a Decepticon.

It’s pretty cool as far as ceiling fans go. I love the way it swings its arms out as if to say it’s alive.

Portable Air Conditioners: Are they for Real?

There is such a thing as a portable air conditioner but it is heavy and clunky as well as a bit slow in its performance. Whatever the case, they are the object of cooling that people are least...

Shark Warplane Ceiling Fan, Stay on Target

Who needs a plain old ceiling fan when you can have this WWII fighter plane nose on your ceiling, complete with propeller? I hope the pilot isn’t an Ace, otherwise you are toast.

It isn’t a real warplane nose and propeller, but is instead a fun recreation that is perfect for your mancave or for any kid’s bedroom. It is painted just like the P-40 fighter jets were when used during WWII. The triple “warplane” blades operate on a reversible three-speed 153-by-12mm motor for optimal air movement, but this thing will never leave the ceiling and start chasing you.

The unit also includes an integrated light kit, with a single 60-watt candelabra bulb that casts a warm, ambient glow. Fans of aviation will love it. It sells for about $261(USD) over on Amazon.

Helicopter Ceiling Fan Lands Upside-Down

I’ll start by saying that a ceiling fan that looked this cool would never fly (pun intended) in my house, as our decor is a little too “modern and sophisticated” for this to blend into any of our current spaces. That said, I’d be willing to consider a redesign just so I could have one of these ceiling fans that looks like a helicopter.

helicopter ceiling fan

This aluminum and fiberglass helicopter ceiling fan comes from Raffaele Iannello Creative Studio and it’s spectacular. Not only does it look just like a 1:6 scale version of the Hughes/MD500 helicopter, but it’s hanging upside-down, which isn’t exactly the easiest way to fly or land one.

helicopter ceiling fan 2a

Each of its four carbon fiber blades measures appx. 28-inches long, and it should do a good job cooling off a small- to medium-sized room. There’s no word on how much one of these will cost, but I suppose you could always try and hack one together from your own large R/C chopper. You’d just need to make sure it’s well secured to the ceiling, and the blades would have to be flipped over to ensure the breeze blows down instead of up.
