Mudra is a minimalist cutting with a simple game-changing trick

There are a lot of tools in the kitchen that we take for granted. While we pay very close attention to knives, pots, pans, and ovens, things like graters and cutting boards are often neglected. After all, they don’t get displayed in the kitchen that often, though probably that’s because they’re not much to look at in the first place. Cutting or chopping boards, in particular, have even less time under the spotlight since it’s almost always expected to get stained and dirty over time. They also don’t have many purposes outside of food prep, stored away after use and after cleaning. Of course, that’s only by convention and tradition, and there’s no reason why a cutting board can’t be more than that. This slab of wood, for example, is beautiful enough to show off, but it actually has a few other tricks up its sleeve, all thanks to a single cutout.

Designer: Contexte Design

Of all kitchen tools, the cutting board is probably the simplest. Its most basic requirement is just a flat material that can withstand slicing and chopping from a sharp knife. Bonus points if that material doesn’t stain or can be easily cleaned, retaining its pristine appearance and texture over the years. That’s why most cutting board designers try to mix things up by using different types of materials and colors, including transparent tempered glass, to produce an attractive yet functional piece for your kitchen.

At first glance, Mudra might actually look comparatively plain, though its simple appearance does have its charm. Made from solid oak or beech, the board is already quite handsome on its own. Unlike most wooden cutting boards, though, there is a very noticeable notch on its body. This cutout, however, isn’t just a whimsical embellishment and is probably the main draw of this board.

That cutout serves as a holding place for cut and chopped pieces, as well as a sort of funnel when you have to pour the contents over to some container. Most cutting boards are completely flat on all sides and corners, which means there’s a tendency for pieces to fall off in the process. It’s a small change in the basic form of a cutting board, but one that has a huge impact on the tool’s usability and flexibility.

That notch also functions as a sort of handle when carrying the board upside-down. That transforms the cutting board into a tasting board, perfect for showing off pieces of cheese, meats, and fruits, as well as a way of serving them fresh off the cutting board, literally. It’s another example of how that simple design change turns this cutting board’s world on its head, again literally, allowing it to be both a functional kitchen tool as well as a beautiful platform for showing off your culinary skills.

This strangely shaped cutting board was designed for people with limited mobility

I always argue that good design shouldn’t be measured by how many people it’s benefitting, but rather by the nature of the problem posed to the people. Handicapped people and people with motor impairments make up just a small fraction of humanity, so products that help them overcome daily tasks are arguably and measurably better than products that help solve problems for the masses. The ‘Bulge Cutting Board’ is one such product, designed for people with limited hand mobility.

I’m sure you’ve never tried chopping vegetables with one hand, but there are a lot of people who have no other option. “People with motor impairments, such as the absence of a hand or their limited usability, are often dependent on aids that are more reminiscent of tools and are far from any aesthetics”, says Germany-based designer Jon Starck, who created the Bulge Cutting Board. Designed with a set of ‘hillocks’ that somewhat randomly cover the board’s surface, the Bulge Cutting Board enables single-handed chopping and cutting. The bulges help trap and stabilize food while you chop them, preventing them from rolling or shifting and enabling you to go through the experience with just one hand.

Designer: Jon Starck

“The elevations of different sizes and distances from each other allow fixing various foods for processing. They provide support when cutting, smearing and transporting”, says Starck.

Bulge is a rare example of a product that serves a smaller audience, but serves them well. The design isn’t ‘universal’, but caters to a universal need for a marginalized audience. Perfect for people with limited use of their hands, the Bulge Cutting Board gives them the control they need as they pursue an independent life! Pairs rather wonderfully with this ‘knife for the visually impaired‘!

This travel cutting board with a built-in knife cuts out the stress of food prep on the go

We love good food, and we love to travel but why are there so many tools for making food on the go that are inconvenient, difficult to use, and of such cheap quality. You can either get portable camping cooking tools that are compact but don’t last and suck to actually cook with, or you have to lug around a full-size cutting board, while safely carrying a chef’s knife while on the go. When adventuring and traveling, you want to have the best gear possible while still being easy and convenient to travel with. It would be great if you could safely tie a chef’s knife and a high-quality cutting board together, without it being hard to carry, awkward to use and a pain to maintain. AK Studios have elegantly solved this problem with their new high-quality tool for food prep on the go The BACA Board. Standing for Bring Anywhere and Cut Anything, The BACA Board shows how out-of-the-box thinking and acute attention to detail can go a long way in cutting through the problem of a sub-par cooking experience.

In effect, the BACA Board acts as a knife holder like the ones you might have in the kitchen, except it’s portable and easy to carry around. The knife slots perfectly into the side of the board, and a strong magnetic retention system makes sure that the razor-sharp 440c stainless steel knife stays put and safe inside, no matter how much the board shakes and jiggles, whether it’s in your bag, on the boat or in the RV.

The cutting board itself is a work of engineering and art despite its unassuming appearance. Made from a staggered grain hard maple wood butcher block, the board is specially manufactured to resist warping and cracking. Its perfectly portable size makes it easy to stash quickly inside any bag or compartment, while its minimalist design will make you proud to have it hanging for everyone to see. This product would be a great fit for van life, boating, wilderness camping, or just those looking to enjoy a picnic or equip their city apartment kitchen.

Magnetic Retention System – Secures the knife in the board until you’re ready to use it.

440c Stainless Steel – The knife is honed to a razor-sharp edge.

Drainage Channel – This allows for deep cleaning and proper drying.

Juice Groove – Keep the juices where you want them and your work surface clear and clean.

Bottle Opener – Perfectly sized to pop tops.

The BACA Board’s story doesn’t end there, though, and it’s the little details that really make this cooking tool shine. For example, the groove near the edges of the board isn’t just a random design detail but actually functions as a canal for juices to drain out of and keep your work area clean. There’s also a drainage channel that makes cleaning and maintaining both the board and knife easy and painless. The knife itself also has a secret talent in the form of a bottle opener on the dull edge, removing the need to have another tool you might forget at home.

From the simple design choices to the high quality of the manufacturing, the attention even to the smallest detail makes The BACA Board the sharpest knife in the drawer. Or rather the sharpest drawer for the sharpest knife. AK Studios has a focus on making high-quality products that last. That perfectionism even extends to the maintenance kit, which includes a dual-sided diamond sharpening plate, a 100% heavyweight cotton maintenance cloth, a 2oz amber glass bottle of food-safe mineral oil for re-oiling the board on the go, and even some black paracord for hanging your board if you so choose. The BACA Board come with everything you need for a worry-free outdoor cooking experience as well as the tools to keep the board and knife in top shape. The preorder pricing of $120 is a steal given the quality of these tools, which have a retail price of $150.00. Life is too short to deal with and is an adventurous journey, and it always helps to have top-quality tools that you’ll be able to enjoy for the full trip. Buy once. cry once. Cooking on the go doesn’t have to be a disaster when you have the right tools for the job, especially with The BACA travel cutting board and its built-in razor-sharp knife.

This smart sustainable kitchen cutting board has 10 features including a 99.99% germ-killing UVC light!

Chop it like its hot! I’ve always wanted to say that but this chopping board truly is one of the best designs I’ve seen and it is 100% going on the top of my kitchen essentials list. Chopbox is a smart chopping board that has so many unique features but the most relevant one in these ‘unprecedented times’ is the fact that it can actually kill germs on your cooking tools and space! Get rid of counter clutter and those extra kitchen accessories with this much-needed upgrade.

You can easily sanitize your knives and cutting surfaces, embrace your inner quarantine chef with germ-free cooking thanks to Chopbox’s built-in disinfecting UVC light – see I told you, this board is lit and literally! We clean our knives but do we ever think about the germs in knife blocks or the crevices of our cutting boards? With Chopbox all you have to do place your knife in between the two cutting surfaces and activate the small but powerful 254nm UVC light that can sanitize up to 3 knives at once as well as both the cutting surfaces. “Just one minute of UVC light exposure is guaranteed to kill 99.99% of germs and bacteria. The 254nm UVC light used in the ChopBox is small and has a limited angle with only a small gap in the boards when in use. It is 100% safe for all humans to be around and near this light. The UVC light will automatically switch off when you separate the two boards or you can press the second button on the control panel to turn it off. You will receive no negative side effects from this UVC light,” says the team.

With two cutting surfaces, you can switch between veggies and meat to avoid cross-contamination. Use the smaller cutting board for food scraps, as a side piece to store chopped produce, or for transferring the ingredients to the stove. The clever design even lets you replace the main cutting surface when needed. Another interesting feature of Chopbox is that it can also weigh your food with a built-in scale. The middle button on the control panel is used to switch between grams, ounces, pounds, kilograms, and a tare function for accuracy so you always have the right portions. Kitchen timers are not revolutionary but this one is integrated on the surface itself and can run for 9 hours! Chopbox also has two replaceable knife sharpeners on the right edge of the board – one is made with a diamond stone and the other is made with a ceramic stone so you adjust your level of sharpness accordingly.

Chopbox is not only smart, but it is also strong and can hold 150 pounds of weight. It is crafted sustainably using bamboo wood which was used for its hard density, durability, and affordability. The board and its replaceable parts are all 100% recyclable as sustainability is important to the designers and the consumers. It runs on a 3000 mAh battery that lasts for 30 days of daily use on a one-hour charge cycle. It is also waterproof and is rated IPX7 which means it can withstand being in water up to 3 feet deep! Since this is a smart cutting board with batteries and other tech features, it is not meant to be put in a dishwasher as the heat will cause damage to an otherwise long-lasting, multifunctional appliance. Even Gordon Ramsay will only have nice things to say about Chopbox!

Chopbox protects you against germs and bacteria

Did you know that knife blocks, drawers, and even regular cutting boards harbor tons of bacteria and germs? It seems like no one talks about it, but the hidden germs in your kitchen are very real.

The revolutionary ChopBox makes sanitizing your knives and cutting surfaces easy and brings germ-free cooking to your kitchen with a built-in disinfecting UVC light in the cutting board. Traditional knife blocks and cutting boards with gouges and scrapes can harbor harmful bacteria and germs. But who thinks to sanitize their knife after grabbing it? Now you can place your knife in between the two cutting surfaces and activate the small but powerful 254nm UVC light to sanitize up to 3 knives at once AND both cutting surfaces at the same time! Just one minute of UVC light exposure is guaranteed to kill 99.99% of germs and bacteria.

The 254nm UVC light used in the ChopBox is small and has a limited angle with only a small gap in the boards when in use. It is 100% safe for all humans to be around and near this light. The UVC light will automatically switch off when you separate the two boards or you can press the second button on the control panel to turn it off. You will receive no negative side effects from this UVC light

Replaces 5 Kitchen Gadgets

chopbox

Instead of needing up to five single-use gadgets and tools in your kitchen, the ChopBox combines all five into one amazing cutting board. You’ll never need to find or store smaller single-use tools like a food scale or kitchen timer again and will have more room for storage and organization in your kitchen.

Two Boards in One: Double up your space and avoid cross-contamination.

chopbox2

With two cutting surfaces, you can switch between raw meat and seafood to other foods without ever having to worry about cross-contamination. You can also use the smaller cutting board for food scraps, as an area to store cut foods, and for transferring your chopped food to the stove. The main cutting surface is replaceable. Buy parts via Kickstarter, or from Amazon after the campaign.

Scale: Built-in digital scale weighs up to 6.6 pounds

 chopbox3

The built-in scale is part of the cutting board on the left-hand side. You can measure your ingredients in grams, ounces, pounds, kilograms and the scale weighs up to 6.6 pounds. Always get the exact right portion! The middle button on the control panel is used to switch between grams, ounces, pounds, kilograms with a single long-press. The scale features a tare function. To zero out the scale for a bowl or other vessel, just place the bowl on the scale and press the third (middle) button on the control panel to zero out the scale so that you’re only weighing the goof, not the container.

Timer: 9-hour kitchen timer

chopbox4

Your food will come out perfectly every time with our 9 -hour digital kitchen timer built-in to the ChopBox. Unlike traditional kitchen timers which can only go up to 59 minutes, the ChopBox timer has a longer readout and can be set for up to 9 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds, so even big meals and slow cooker meals can be set on this timer.

Knife Sharpeners: Dual Inset Knife Sharpeners

chopbox5

It’s tough to remember where you put that small knife sharpener or know you’re using the honing steel type of sharpener correctly, so we made it easier than ever by putting two knife sharpeners right on the side of the cutting board. They are easily accessible and simple to use. There are two different knife sharpeners built into the ChopBox. One is made from diamond stone, and the other is made of ceramic stone, so you can pick your level of sharpness. The sharpeners are replaceable. Buy parts via Kickstarter or from Amazon after the campaign.

Groove for catching runoff

There is a groove surrounding the cutting surface on the larger cutting surface for catching any juices from falling off and onto your counter, clothing, or floor. Just another small feature to make this the best cutting board you’ve ever used.

Use the second board as a presentation plater

chopbox6

In addition to food preparation, this smart cutting board is a perfect food presentation platter for parties and guests! With two clean uniform surfaces, you can use it as two separate food serving surfaces or as the perfect cheese or charcuterie board with the second surface coming out from the bottom to hold cheese knives and catch any drips.

Long-lasting battery life: lasts up to 30 days on a single charge

The ChopBox has a large battery inside [3000 mAh] which charges quickly. With just one hour of charging you get up to 30 days of regular daily use of your smart cutting board.

Completely waterproof for an easy clean up

IPX is a waterproof rating system that refers to the ability of an object to resist water. For example, IPX0 means something is not water-resistant at all, such as a book. IPX2 means your object is protected from “some water drops when the device is tilted up to and including 15 degrees.” The rating goes up to IPX8, which means your object is protected even if it is dropped in over 3 feet of water and is fully waterproof.

The ChopBox is rated IPX7, meaning it is fully waterproof and can withstand being in water up to 3 feet deep! However, we do NOT recommend putting the ChopBox in a dishwasher, as the high heat in dishwashers warp and break down all natural cutting boards over time

Durability tested and high strength

chopbox7

ChopBox is incredibly strong! It holds up to 150 pounds of weight. Bamboo is completely natural and organic and is considered a “low maintenance wood,” meaning it is very hard and dense, so it keeps water out of the wood itself so it will not warp or crack as other woods can. Other woods like maple, walnut, or cherry require regular maintenance with mineral oil or beeswax to keep it from cracking and warping. Bamboo is also resistant to knife scarring, due to its hard density and is known for its durability and affordability.

Make meal prep hassle-free again with this space-saving cutting board!

One of the biggest lifestyle changes for me was meal prep, it eliminates the fuss of deciding what to cook every day and made grocery shopping so much easier. One of the best parts was I didn’t have to order out when I was at work and it made me realize how quickly “But it is just $12!” adds up when you practically do it every other day. Seems like everyone was riding this meal prep wave till we were hit with WFH and that sudden change the pandemic brought on derailed the most disciplined people. For me, I stopped meal prep because I was adjusting to working from home and doing chores at the same time. So I started snacking throughout the day instead of cooking a meal because who wants to clean after a perpetual Monday (that is what it feels like in quarantine)? Enter TidyBoard! It is not wearing a cape but it is here to make your life easier and get your good eating habits back on track!

TidyBoard was designed to encourage healthy eating and turn it into a sustainable lifestyle change instead of a trend (looking at you, juice cleanse!). It streamlines your prep with strategically placed strainers, catches, and containers on the end of the cutting board so there is more to eat and less to clean. It keeps food and scraps separate and allows you to strain hands-free. When you are done with the chopping and cutting, one swipe of your hand will clear it all. TidyBoard is constructed from bamboo which is antibacterial and durable enough to last for years making the wear and tear worth the effort. Bamboo also makes it lightweight and eco-friendly. “The TidyBoard was mindfully influenced by math and physics. Our board is engineered as a lever to stay steady even with a heavy load in the containers,” says the team.

The product is calculatingly made to optimize your counter space and the collapsible containers make it super easy to prep and store. It can hang off the edge of your sink which actually makes you use less of your countertop for prep and you don’t have to worry about losing precious produce or fresh pasta to your sink! The cutting board acts as a lever to help hold the weight of the catch – it can hold up to 9 lbs of food in its container while hanging off your counter (do you even lift?). The BPA-free Food Grade silicone containers are made collapsible to save 50% of drawer/cabinet space which makes it perfect for small kitchens or homes that don’t have a lot of storage. The large catch and containers have volumetric and measuring marks to aid you in your prep so that you are never short on a meal because of wrong calculations! The collapsible strainers are nestled into the end of the board for cleaning or straining hands-free. The kit includes snap-on lids so you can store them in the containers right after prep. The lids also have a vent which makes it easy to microwave so you can store and eat from the same container.

Gordon Ramsey will be very pleased with your kitchen work ethic because TidyBoard keeps it clean and clutter-free. Say goodbye to chaotic cooking and welcome spick and span prep…something Monica Geller would say and we would absolutely agree with her! So prep ingredients without any stress, strain pasta, store cuttings, soak fruits and veggies, compost scraps, and serve up a whole cheese platter too if you feel like! It is hard enough to sanitize everything all the time, work from home, do all chores, so the last thing you should have to worry about is your meals and cleaning up after you cook. Bon appetit!

Millennium Falcon Cutting Board: Punch (and Chop) It Chewie!

The Millennium Falcon is best known for its ability to do the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs. But did you know it’s also suitable for cutting parsnips? Or chopping onions? Or julienning carrots? Well, it is if you pick up this Millennium Falcon cutting board from Promi Design.

This $50 cutting board is the perfect addition to any Star Wars geek’s kitchen and would look awesome alongside your X-Wing Fighter knife set and R2-D2 measuring cups. I don’t know if Chewbacca’s knife skills are as sharp as his bowcaster skills, but I do know he’d do a pretty good job ripping turkey bones out of their sockets, so he’d still make a good sous chef. Even if you don’t chop too much stuff in your kitchen, this wooden cutting board will look great sitting on your counter or hanging on your wall from the attached leather handle.

The Millennium Falcon cutting board is made from glued solid woods and measures 14.5″ x 10.6″ x 0.8″, which is way smaller than I remember the actual Falcon being. Though this one only needs to be big enough to hold some tomatoes, so I guess that’s okay.

Death Star Cutting Board

That’s no moon! Sorry, we are obligated by international Star Wars law to say that every time we post about the Death Star. Rules are rules. But there’s no rules when it comes to kitchen gadgets and there’s no reason why you wouldn’t want a Death Star Cutting Board to use instead of a regular boring plain cutting board (or maybe you live like a caveman and have no cutting board? how do you do it?)

This galactic planet-sized superweapon inspired cutting board is made of a hygienic glass surface that is odor and stain resistant. It protects your countertops from scratches and Rebel attacks (hopefully it’s better at the former, if you know what we’re saying). A non-slip rubber base keeps it in place. Use it as a trivet too. Measures approximately 12″ across. Fully operational.

Food Prep is More Fun With Origami

gami_01

A 2018 Red Dot Concept Award winner, the GAMI cutting board might just be the most versatile of its kind. Inspired by origami (get it, GAMI?!), this practical design goes beyond folding down into a compact size that’s easy to store and carry.

In just three simple steps, it breaks down into a handy knife cover that folds around the blade to protect it (and anyone or anything that it comes in contact with). Embedded magnets ensure that both the knife and folded unit stay secure even when transporting. Ideal for compact kitchen spaces, it’s even better for mobile chefs or anyone who enjoys taking their cooking skills on the road while camping or traveling!
