A wearable for travellers that doubles as a health monitor brings back the pocket watch in style

Smart wristwatches are found dime a dozen. But to everyone’s surprise, smart pocket watches are a thing and the smart version of these timepieces for the pocket has gained a foothold in the niche market. A charm for collectors, these intricate devices have always left me fascinated. No wonder, when I came across the Cue – a concept for a smart pocket watch – I couldn’t help but share the idea.

Once a standard, pocket watches have stood the test of time in spite of the wristwatches becoming that fascinating standard since the mid-20th century. The wristwatches are a major revenue bed for watchmakers but even though watches have become mainstream for the better part of a century now, pocket watches have not died out. In fact, these classics have gained more attraction and found a niche market.

Designer: Rahul G M

Tapping into that market with a touch of modern-day gimmickry; Indian designer Rahul has conceived the idea of a feature-rich pocket watch every adventurer would want to have handy when venturing into the wild. Designed with features to allow travelers to navigate better, track their daily activities, and keep tabs on their health, the minimalistic yet powerful Cue can send out emergency SOS alerts and even remind the user of medication time when traveling.

Staying true to the idea of a pocket watch from yesteryears, the Cue has a nice circular design outfitted with a solitary button. The button onboard can be used for switching the watch on/off or for activating the SOS service. The functioning of the button is dependent upon the way you intact with it. A click turns the device on or off, a seven-second long press opens the menu, while a long press of 15 seconds opens up the SOS slider (which can be toggled at will).

The Cue is available in a range of colors, has a nice digital dial, compass, and other abovementioned functionalities. It can even be mounted to your bike or backpack or carried in your pocket for convenience. If you have a compact and handy travel companion, that’s accurate at navigating your home or keeping a check on your medication, on your buying list, the Cue could be that companion for your next outing on the untrodden paths.

A Timepiece That Showcases Traditional Timelessness

Long before watches were worn on wrists, they were attached to waists. The pocket watch predates the wristwatch by more than 200 years… and with time, when watches could accurately display the time despite movement caused by human activities, the watch shifted from the pocket to the wrist, making it much easier to read the time by simply glancing down at one’s hand. Watches then started becoming much more commonplace, leaving the pocket watch with a history of being reserved for the elite upper class. Even today, pocket watches are often worn with traditional/vintage or high-society outfits, exuding class, while a wristwatch remains a much more modern status symbol.

Wanting to honor both pasts, the DR.W. Watch comes with two bodies and a detaching dial, allowing it to be worn as a wristwatch when needed, and transform into a pocket watch when the situation demands. Celebrating over half a millennium of personal timepieces, the DR.W. Watch comes with a style that balances the fine line between contemporary and old school. Precision made from the finest 316L Stainless Steel and Leather, the watch comes with a twist-open detachable dial and two bodies, allowing you to wear the watch as a wristpiece at some times, and a pocket watch at others. The watch’s aesthetic sticks to familiar visual cues, with a circular body, clear numbers, and two circular subdials, and a date window, allowing it to look equally classy as both a pocket watch and a wristwatch. The mechanism, devised in-house, is robust, yet easy to use. Simply push and twist the watch dial and it comes open with s click. Housing the dial in the new body is just as easy with a twist-click action.

The watch was designed by creator Reinder after he noticed that his brother, a practicing medic, wasn’t allowed to wear wristwatches while working, for hygienic reasons. Reinder immediately went to the drawing board to develop a draft for the transforming watch, that would sit well on your wrist as well as in your pocket, connected via a lanyard. The resulting watch beautifully plays both roles, and comes with a style that does justice to both contemporary and vintage/classic sensibilities. Available in black, white, and navy, the watch dials sport a radially brushed metal face with clear numerals, sitting under a sapphire crystal glass top. With a leather wrist strap and a choice between metal and leather leashes for the pocket lanyard, the DR.W. Watch sticks to a style that has been around for centuries, and isn’t going to go anywhere for a long time… in fact, it may just be the most classic representation of a timepiece ever!

With a simple twist and click you can turn your wristwatch into a pocket watch – and reverse. Two watches in one. The concept consists of three parts:

– a back plate for the wrist watch
– a back plate for the pocket watch
– and the watch itself

The watch will be complemented with an (easily exchangeable) strap and cord/chain. The watch can be attached to both back plates with just a simple twist and click.

Imagine adapting your style to every situation in just a few seconds with a simple twist!

Either if you aim to use it as a pocket watch or a ‘regular’ wrist watch only, the design of the watch does not show any compromise between the two styles.

Transforming your wristwatch to a pocket watch (or vice versa) is just a matter of:

– a push
– a twist
– and a click

A Pocket Watch You Can Wear

marv_01

Can we have a different relationship with our time tellers? That’s the question Debaser Design asked when creating Marv, a beautiful transforming timepiece.

Until the 1900s, watching lived inside our pockets! You’d hold a handsomely crafted watch in your hand each time you wanted to know the hour. With Marv, you can do both. The design features a warm mocha-color, matte ceramic carbon body, nice proportions, a precise and machined rotational wheel, as well as an Alcantara strap. In short, it’s sharp looking. But, if it doesn’t match your outfit or you want to free up your wrist… just swap out the straps and hook it on your jeans or jacket and throw it in a pocket!

Iron Man Arc Reactor Pocket Watch: If He Only Had a Heart

If Tony Stark had been born a century or two earlier,  he would have probably skipped the high-tech Arc Reactor and gone with something more like the Tin Woodsman had – a pocket watch heart. This is what that watch would look like. Yeah, basically a pocket watch that matches Iron Man’s armor.

This Iron Man steampunk style pocket watch was made by Adi Simion and even though it may not be able to keep track of time, I know that I would buy one in a heartbeat.

It also reminds me that we need to take some of these superheros and throw them into the Victorian era. Those are the movies that I would like to see. Somebody get on that.

Steampunk Iron Man Reactor Pocket Watch: Can’t Tell the Time, But It Keeps On Ticking

Steampunk Iron Man Reactor Watch

What can you do with a pocket watch, except bring it out when you want to know what time it is? Why, take its insides out and create one of the awesomest steampunked versions of Iron Man’s arc reactor! That’s what Adi Simion did and it looks out he succeeded in creating a piece that Tony Stark himself would be proud to own.

You won’t be able to read the time off of the pocket watch anymore, since its face has been taken out to make room for Iron Man’s reactor, but who needs a watch when you can have Iron Man’s source of power, right in your very own pocket?

Take Time Reinvents the Pocket Watch

I’ll admit that from time to time, I do want to carry around a pocket watch, but the obsessiveness of always being on time and knowing the exact time, right down to the second takes precedence in my timely, regimented world. However, even if it’s not necessarily the most accurate way of telling time, I do like this modern reinterpretation of the classic pocket watch.

French designer Mathieu Lehanneur created the Take Time pocket watch for Lexon. The watch is a quartz analog timepiece that has a silicone rubber band. The band can be looped around belts, bikes, and other items. However, you can still strap it around your wrist if that’s where you prefer to have your watch.

The Take Time watch retails for about £29.95 (~$49 USD) and is available in a variety of different colors over at Gifts with Style.
