Kohler wants to ‘infuse’ your shower water with aromas that give you a spa-like experience

Imagine your Nespresso coffee machine and shower head had a baby…

Kohler unveiled what it believes to be the ‘future of bathing’ at this year’s CES – a shower infusion system that relaxes and rejuvenates you as you bathe. The way Kohler does this is simple – the Sprig Shower Infusion System includes a device that can be attached to any showerhead, which lets you add ‘Sprig Shower Pods’. Unlike your Nespresso, these pods don’t turn shower water into coffee… however, they do infuse the water with pleasant and calming aromas that give you a therapeutic experience as you bathe. Think scented candles and bath salts, but without the bathtub.

Kohler is building on this system with a range of pods that offer a variety of fragrances like eucalyptus, chamomile, rose, lavender, lemongrass, along with minerals and ingredients that are supposedly good for your skin, like hyaluronic acid and sodium. According to The Verge, each pod provides infusions for “several minutes.”

The Sprig Shower Infusion System works with any existing shower head by sitting between the head and the water outlet in the wall. Water passes through the pod, picking up its eclectic blend of fragrances and chemicals, and then exits the shower head in the form of an aromatic spray of water. There is a catch, however. You can only use Sprig Shower Pods with this system, and there’s currently no way of breaking away from Kohler’s tight ecosystem. It feels a lot like the kind of business model Nespresso and Keurig built (first popularized by printers who bundled cartridges with hardware), with Kohler charging $21 for a 6-pack of single-use infusion pods. I’d keep them for special occasions, if I were you.

When I am in a work slump, I try to kick-start my creative juices in different ways. I microwave a cup of coffee, put on music, and (this might surprise people) light a candle. Wait, you might think, Candles are supposed to have a calming effect, right? They aren’t supposed to spur your productive flow. For a long time, I believed that my correlation between productivity and scented candles was just a placebo effect. It turns out some research suggests that certain scents can increase alertness and work performance. How? The basic principles of aromatherapy say that smells can evoke positive emotions and memories associated with those emotions. That correlation can enhance the experience of various activities, from relaxing in a spa to typing this article.

The smart diffuser/speaker embodies the idea that your other senses, particularly smell and hearing, can be evoked to enhance whatever activity you are taking part in. What does the speaker do? It analyzes the music you’re playing and chooses a fragrance to complement the mood. By combining smell and sound, the smart speaker/diffuser creates a more immersive experience … even if that experience simply involves lying in bed or researching award-winning product designs.

We think of scent diffusers as relaxation products, but this design shows that aromatherapy has many more uses. My one gripe with the smart speaker/diffuser is its current marketing. Its description on Instagram fails to show off the versatility of this concept because it only names one available scent: lavender, which connotes relaxation. I would love to see what scents the speaker would choose for an upbeat song for the hours when I want to be productive. Overall, you can tell that I was impressed with a concept if my main critique was for the online presentation. I love this product because it also validates smell-motivated workers like me, who thought their candle-lighting routine made them an oddity.

You can call me a fan of Fulden Dehneli’s work because everything she has designed so far always has a personal story or deeper meaning apart from improved functionality. Her designs, be it TV or a face mask, always leave you feeling good and the latest one to evoke that emotion is BOOP – an aromatherapy oil diffuser that has been specifically made for kids!

When you hear the word ‘boop’ you would usually associate it with a gentle, swift touch on the nose. The oil diffuser was called so because Dehneli wanted it to embody that ‘boop’ feeling in a physical product that made you feel as if someone gave you a loving pat. Aromatherapy is a proven natural solution to create a healthy environment while enhancing the mood. It adds to the ambiance while soothing the nervous system with the essential oil blend. Aromatherapy is known to induce calm, reduce discomfort, and promote good sleep for every user but usually, the diffusers’ aesthetics are chosen for grown-ups. This product combines an oil diffuser with a white noise machine for a more multidimensional effect.

The oil diffuser features interchangeable magnetic ear and nose parts so children can easily transform it into a cuddly bear, a sweet bunny, or a playful fox within seconds. This little modular detail lets little ones come up with their own stories and form a bond with a product – it’s as simple as “This is mine, this stays in my room, this is not my mom’s thing,” which inculcates a sense of personal space as well. Its friendly form, calming sound selections, and the gentle glowing light in the belly add to the warmth of the product. BOOP aims to make kids feel comfortable and protected by giving them something that kickstarts their own self-care routine early on.

Hey Alexa, diffuse me some oil. This is one device that actually makes a LOT of sense to have connected to your smart home. With the Smart WiFi Essential Oil Aromatherapy Diffuser you can use the app to control the diffuser or use your Alexa or Google Home to control it with just your voice. There’s a lot of settings you can actually control here: the LED color on the light, mist intensity, timer settings, and scheduling.

The scheduling feature is the real attraction here; you can create regular schedules so your diffuser comes on whenever you want it. So you can have it running just before you arrive home from work every day- the ultimate stress reliever already set for you as soon as you walk in the door. Or have it come on when you wake each morning, to set the mood for a great day. Or if your schedule is irregular, just use the app or Alexa to have it going when you want. Plus you can set the LED light to ANY color. I’m feeling a light green right about now. No red. Definitely red.

This smart diffuser uses ultrasonic frequencies to vaporize water and oil molecules into the air (a better alternative than heat-style diffusers). The big 400ml water tank lets you get up to 12 hours of continuously misting aromatherapy. If that’s not enough, maybe you need another type of therapy, like one with an actual therapist or something. Just saying. But for the rest of us, this diffuser is not only highly functional, it also has a really nice style that looks really sleek and artistic.

In Chinese tea drinking, traditionally, the lid will be placed ever so slightly tilted so as to leave a gap so that the aroma of the leaves can escape and fill the air, creating an olfactory experience in addition to the taste. Inspired by this, designer Lu Yicong developed GAP, an aromatherapy diffuser that mirrors this age-old process in an minimalistic, ultra-modern device.

After placing the desired essential oils, inside, the user can activate the diffusing process by pressing the top section. The tilted top mimics that of the tea cup and allows the aroma to disperse for psychological and physical well-being.
