A Mycelium grill design, made from edible fungus can be biodegraded and fertilizes the earth!

MYC is a sustainable disposable grill made from mycelium, a biodegradable and fireproof vegetative part of a fungus that’s safe and edible for humans.

With the end of summer already closing in on us, camping is all the more popular and so are barbeques, which means the garbage is getting left behind once the grill’s off. Disposable grills allow barbeques to take place outdoors without the hassle of lugging around a portable one, but the familiar aluminum grills often get left behind at the site once the BBQ is finished. Industrial design student Stephanie Singer created MYC, a sustainable disposable grill made from fungal mycelium as an alternative to the aluminum disposable grill.

In researching fireproof materials to build her grill, Singer found mycelium, a fireproof, vegetative part of a fungus that’s safe and edible for humans. Mycelium hosts an array of properties that make it the ideal choice with which to build a disposable grill. Inexpensive and very easy to grow, mycelium is an accessible, sustainable alternative building material that’s water repellent, naturally insulating, and entirely biodegradable. After cultivating her own lot of mycelium, Singer constructed prototypes of MYC and envisioned the disposable grill lining the shelves of convenience stores and gas stations to bring the choice of sustainable disposable grills to the masses. Following the use of an MYC grill, instead of searching for the nearest garbage can, grillers can simply cut up and leave MYC at the campsite to biodegrade and fertilize the earth.

While mycelium constructs the chunk of MYC, Singer sought out additional accessories to make the grill operable. Discussing the various biodegradable materials used to build MYC, Singer says, “MYC consists of a bowl made of fungal mycelium, a grate made of bamboo sticks, and dried corn cobs as fuel. The product is available as a compact grill kit and is protected by a minimalist cardboard cover. Dried corn cobs are used as fuel, as these are a waste product in the field in EU agriculture when growing fodder corn. As soon as the embers are ready, the bamboo sticks can easily be placed in the bulges on the side to create a grate.”

This Japanese wood-fired BBQ grill is a modern, minimal tool every cook wants!

Want to bring the evenly cooked smoked flavors of delicious barbeque grilled food to your porch or apartment balcony with a bit of style? The BBQ&co Grill makes that possible with a unique design that unites cultures in the current uncertain times.

The pandemic has taught us a lot about keeping ourselves entertained indoors with our digital devices, but things can get boring after a while constantly staring at the screen. Casual leisure in the cozy confines of the home is now much more than just scrolling through the social network feed or DIY projects – it is more about resurrecting outdoor leisure with ease. SEIKI DESIGN STUDIO, a Kyoto-based product design studio’s refreshing barbeque grill design is a budding image of this new lifestyle prompted by the COVID-19 restrictions.

The lead designer of the project, Seiki Ishii closely analyzed the dynamics of city living without compromising on the cooking of mouthwatering rotisserie, churrasco steak, or grilling the fresh salmon sushi from the market. This cross-cultural cooking space results in an elegant and compact BBQ grill that brings home the style of Spanish and Brazilian BBQ grilling. One that is dominated by wood burnt in the chimney to create a constant fire for the most evenly cooked delicacies.

Seiki’s prime focus for the BBQ grill’s design is on the relationship between the host and the guest – wherein the person cooking the food can communicate with the guest while still concentrating on the immaculate grilling process. Called the BBQ&co Grill, this minimalist barbeque grill comes with an accompanying baking table that can be customized as per the cooking needs. Continuous and even cooking is the highlighting USP of this wood-fired grill which is further honed by its ultra-modern design perfect for urban homes.

This 3-in-1 cooking appliance includes a stove, a convection oven and a grill with magnetic skewers!

Decker is a multilayered kitchen appliance which has a stove, a convection oven and a grill, that helps young professionals with their busy lifestyle cooking or heating up food quickly while also presenting the feeling of grilling outdoors. Devoid of fossil fuels like coal, and using electricity it creates a smokeless experience, perfect for an urban kitchen or a balcony.

Young Millennials and Gen Z users who to stay in urban apartments and community housing have little access to the experience of cooking food on a grill. Indoors, using a BBQ grill not only creates a fire hazard but most living quarters prohibit the use of them as there is a lot of smoke and soot. Most of the users, also prefer to use healthier food sources and means of cooking. However, with something like a sous Vide option, the authentic grill taste is not achieved which is a clear smoked flavour and the experience of cooking on a grill top.

“We worked to understand the core user and their daily habits, likes, and dislikes as well as the environment in which the product is likely to be used. Using a bunch of observational research as well as qualitative questions, we were able to get a ton of insights into how we can move away from the traditional kitchen appliance,” said the team.

Meat/Veggie Divider
Food can now we cooked separately without mixing or contaminating veggies with meat and can be served without any issue for vegetarians and vegan preferences.

Top Glass Lid For Keeping Food Warm
A heat resistant shott glass lid protects the heat and keeps the food warm and doesn’t let it go dry. Using the smart app, you can maintain a consistent temperature until you are ready to consume the food cooked.

Residue Tray
With all the messy fat and oil seeping down, the residue tray helps clear out the gunk and the messy residue. It is completely detachable and can be used to dispose of waste easily and clean it without having to handle it within the device itself.

Triple Decker
Decker is designed to be used every day to cook, heat, and grill food. It is made up of a traditional electric stove, a convection oven, and a grill top to cover various aspects of cooking. So it’s not just a seasonal appliance but can be used everyday.

Smart Docking
The Convection oven and grill docks on to the hot plate stove through contact points to provide a multi layered cooking experience. The appliance is designed to be devoid of visual clutter yet intuitive enough to access all the features and key areas

Efficient Heat Distribution
The placement of the two electric heating coils for the hot plate stove and the grill create a top and down heat just like in a woodfire oven cooking food evenly and efficiently

Magnetic Skewers
The back base of the grill has a magnetic base to hold any metal skewer in place and making it easy to roll and grill meat or veggies.

Stackable And Modular
With the contact points connecting each appliance, power can be transmitted easily to each of the coils independently so that the appliance is not only efficient but also can cater to various use case scenarios. With the smart docking feature, it can be easily assembled or disassembled to create multiple cooking features.

We created a clear yet functional UI that displays options as and when the functionalities are selected. The display screen is a hi definition OLED display that is touch sensitive with multi touch as well as provides haptic feedback to the option selected. With the three functional elements of a stove, grill, and oven, the options for each use case are already mapped out so the user doesn’t have to navigate through a whole bunch of visual clutter thus creating a Dynamic UI.

UI Components
Drawing inspiration from Skuemorphic elements of existing physical appliances, we worked to create a sense of familiarity in the user interface but modernized and minimally depicted a lot of the interactions.

A digital control interface was designed for the appliance to make sure that there are no physical buttons but there was no reduction in options. An intelligent interface that would bring together various options as and when the functionality of the appliance demanded it, added a sophisticated and ease of use. The functions for the Oven would update based on the selection, where as if it was the grill function selected the control interface would update to reveal the relevant functionalities so the user was presented with zero visual clutter and options that were irrelevant to the function being used.

This outdoor 4-in-1 grill barbeques + makes pizzas in the summer, and keeps you warm in the winter!

Temperatures are rising up, and it really does feel like summer’s around the corner! With summer in the air, there’s also a lot of excitement brewing up. Because summer means barbeque season! And, with COVID-19 basically shutting us in our homes, an intimate barbeque session with our close friends and family, in our backyard seems like the best idea ever. But the number one criteria for hosting a successful barbeque party is to have a foolproof barbecue grill! In 2019, the Noori’s V01 grill basically won all our hearts. It became the go-to grill option for barbeque lovers! And this year, Noori is back with their latest V02 AIRY model! Excited much? Me too.

Boasting an enameled steel construction, the Noori V02 AIRY is a multifunctional outdoor grill, pizza oven, rocket stove, and a fire pit – all in one! Not to mention, it’s probably one of the best-looking grills I’ve seen in a long time, it’ll be the perfect visual accessory to your backyard. The grill consists of six refractory concrete internal plates. These plates + an AIRY cylinder make up the grill’s innovative AIRY system (which also gives the product its name). This basically means that to set up an open fire, you simply need to remove a few refractory plates from within the AIRY cylinder, which instantly exposes the flames, creating the mesmerizing flame dance we all love to watch in an open fire! Much like its predecessor the Noori V02 AIRY also features a pizza disc, allowing you to not only bake up some pizzas but bread as well. The disc also supports roasters, and containers suitable for ovens. The upper half-moon grill and the lower orbital grill come together to support your cooking. However, the lower grill has a few additional uses – it centralizes the tube of the Rocket system in the refractory body, and also holds the coal you use for barbequing. A built-in thermometer displays temperature readings in both Celsius and Fahrenheit, aiding you in cooking accurately. A removable lid with a reclaimed wood and steel handle comes in handy when you want to cover up the grill and cook up some pizzas and bake.

One of the most convenient features of the Noori V02 AIRY Grill is its portability! With four wheels built from carbon steel, side handles, and the fact that you only need one person to assemble it, this is the kind of grill you can carry with you on your outdoor adventures as well. This one-of-a-kind grill is ideal for any kind of barbeque session – whether it’s in your backyard or the great outdoors!

Of course, to pull off a successful barbecue party, you need the perfect barbecue grill, and finding one is a Herculean task by itself. Grill on!

The BURCH BARREL gives you unprecedented control over your barbecue process. You can operate the barbecue lid without having to touch it, or rest the grill on any uneven surface without worrying about it falling over, you can even lift the grill plate off the coal-pan to add more fuel. Moreover, when you’re not grilling food, the BURCH BARREL doubles up as a portable fireplace for those perfect sunset social gatherings. The barrel’s design is immediately striking, with a large tripod system that has the barrel suspended from the very center. This unique format keeps the barrel balanced and vertical at all times, allowing you to mount it on rocky terrain or even on slanted surfaces without any fear of the barrel tipping over. Inspired by a camera’s tripod, the BURCH BARREL comes with telescopic legs that let you orient the unit to be stable, no matter how unstable your ground is, giving it a competitive advantage over regular barbecue grills that traditionally require a flat surface like a pavement, to begin with.

Contemporary, compact and easily portable, the V01 comprises a rounded bullet-like body modeled from heat- resistant refractory concrete. An L-shaped enamel pipe transports the fuel through the body of the stove to the grilling surface. The multipurpose stove optimizes the combustion of fuel, allowing us to completely skip out on the unwanted smoke that slithers out during the cooking process. The base consists of wheels, allowing us to easily transport, store and arrange the stove depending on the occasion and the location.  “The goal was to design a product where a ragu, a feijoada, a pasta, a pizza, grilled vegetables, and meat could be prepared,” Eduardo Gayotto, the designer behind Noori added. “We wanted to break with the limitations of a standard barbecue.” And as we can see the featured highlight of V01 remains its modularity.

Perfect for a nice alfresco barbecue, the BBQ Toolbox comes in a handy, portable size, and is made entirely from steel and coated with heat-resistant red paint. An 8×15” main grilling area is large enough to serve up a meal for as many as 4 people. The secondary grill serves as a warming rack, letting you keep food like sliders or hot dog buns warm while you grill up patties and sausages. Strictly in terms of size, the BBQ Suitcase by Kikkerland is no larger than an iPad Pro, if you were to factor in the thickness, I’d compare it to an encyclopedia. Yet it fits a fully functional grill into its rather neat and compact footprint! Perfect for carrying around in your car or even on your person (it’ll fit into a backpack pretty easily), the BBQ Suitcase comes in stainless steel and opens up from a tiffin-box to a completely capable grill enough to barbecue food for two. Designed ultimately for convenience, the portable barbecue comes with a kickstand to give it stability, and even an ash catcher that allows the product to stay mess-free. This modern colorful charcoal BBQ grill works for your terrace parties & even outdoor adventures

Compact and colorful BBQ grills fashioned for terraces and smaller backyards are hard to come by. So, when we stumble upon something in this periphery, we can’t help but stop by and appreciate the idea. Designed first to stick out in the Moroccan markets before flying abroad, the Skara’B Barbecue by Fours Afifi – a local studio focused on designing grills that are discrete yet attractive – is just one to pin your hopes on.

Envisioned as a simple BBQ that would stand upright in competition for its aesthetic design, Skara’B Barbecue proudly showcases Moroccan craftsmanship in its appeal, made possible in collaboration with avant-garde Moroccan designer Mahdi Naim. The moniker Skara’B is derived from the Scarab – a form of beetle that holds symbolic relevance in ancient Egyptian religion – and according to Fours Afifi, is known for its heat resistant properties. The hexagonally-shaped BBQ grill stands just about a meter tall and has 60cms x 60cms of cooking area. The charcoal-fired Skara’B Barbecue has a stainless steel base, which houses a cylindrical steel ash-catcher facilitating clean and hassle-free BBQ sessions on the terrace or backyard.

For convenience and portability, the design team intends to include the barbecue with an attachable table and include a carrying case so you can take it wherever your outdoorsy lifestyle leads you. The grill already features anti-corrosive wheels for maneuvering it around and comes with an adjustable, stainless steel valve for controlling the heat levels. Sorry, there is no option to control temperature and other tad-bits using the phone – this grill basically takes you back in time where grilling sessions were less about the recipe and more about the time you spent with peeps around it with a glass of wine in the hand.

The idea of Skara’B is incomplete without discussing the fun part – the colors – the BBQ grill is available in red, blue, yellow, and fuchsia colorways. The compact grill is now available in Morocco and is expected to ship internationally in the spring of 2021. Hold on to your monochrome grill for a little longer before the Skara’B is ready to fly over to your backyard and spread some cheerful colors.

This modern indoor BBQ grill is inspired by the mechanism of an air purifier!

Missing the BBQ parties during game nights and holidays in quarantine? This conceptual BBQ grill, Campin, makes it possible to still enjoy it indoors (perhaps with fewer people, and if it is just yourself then you won’t even have to share food!) while following the COVID-19 restrictions about outdoor activities and gatherings. BBQ parties are almost a cultural tradition to celebrate events big and small, and while traditionally one has to have a backyard for it, you can now enjoy it thanks to Campin within the comfort of your home without the need for the extra outdoor space – a huge blessing for the urban demographic who is cooped up inside in the pandemic.

It has two core parts – the BBQ bowl at the top and the bottom base. The BBQ bowl has a metal container that houses the whole setup including the intake vent, a charcoal bowl, a grill, and a lid. These pieces are modular and can be separated for easy cleaning and management. There is an LED located under the BBQ bowl that illuminates the lower side and making it look like there is a real fire for the ‘right vibes’.  Campin lets you grill with a charcoal fire by using the specific charcoal bowl for that authentic taste. The smoke is sucked in through the intake vent outside the grill and it is purified and discharged through the filter structure inside the body – the mechanism is similar to an air purifier. The lower part in front of the base includes an outlet to discharge the purified air.

Another thoughtful detail that saves space and reduces mess is the little storage compartment in the bottom – all sauces, seasonings, and dips can be put in here so there is no need for extra counter space or a runner who has to keep going back and forth to the kitchen. Campin can be charged when not in use via the charging port on the rear end of the base making it functional and portable. With this product, you won’t need an invite to a backyard BBQ anymore or have to wait for restrictions to ease up, just fire up that grill and celebrate that you made it through yet another day of 2020.

One Grill to Rule Them All

You don’t often here the words “operating system” in tandem with talking about a barbecue grill… but then again, the Primero isn’t your average grill! Paired with your smartphone, it gives your grill skills a power punch of tech. Additionally, this Argentinian-style barbecue makes the more tedious tasks, such as heating the coals, getting the temperature right, or that inevitable liquid drip, a thing of the past.

For starters, the Primero features an integrated charcoal starter, making it incredibly easy to generate enough flame to get embers glowing while also reducing peak heating time. It also offers a constant and even distribution of heat for cooking consistency. Repositionable settings like a V-profile grate can help adjust the heights of various grilling surfaces to make adjustments for different food types. This unique shape also allows liquids released from food to drain away from the coals where it can be collected and disposed of later. Thanks to its multi-temperature zones (up to 7 to be exact) and ability to perfectly grill everything from steaks to asparagus, it’s the last grill you’ll ever need!
