The team’s earliest prototypes, he notes, were shaped by hand in polymer clay to mimic the radio’s rugged, function-first ergonomics, and even then, they “looked remarkably close to it.”

This move from fiction to field equipment wasn’t just a stylistic choice; it was a direct response to the device’s new capabilities. The core challenge in creating the Flipper One wasn’t about living up to the Zero’s reputation, but a years-long technical quest. “For years, we were chasing the right balance between performance, battery life, and price,” Zhovner recalls. Every processor they considered “forced a compromise we weren’t willing to make.” The breakthrough finally came with the arrival of the RK3576 chip. “The moment we looked at its performance specs and peripheral support, we knew – this was it.”

But that power came at a cost: heat. “Unlike Flipper Zero, Flipper One runs hot,” Zhovner says. Suddenly, the housing couldn’t just be a passive shell; it had to become an active part of the thermal solution. This is where the Yaesu’s design influence became critical. The rugged, armored look isn’t just for show. “The metal elements are doing real thermal work, acting as part of the cooling system,” Zhovner points out. The design team decided to lean into this necessity, creating a device that visually communicates its own power and thermal demands. The team landed on two types – M.2 and GPIO – both designed to either “disappear completely under the back cover, or they extend flush along the rear surface.” It’s a small detail that reveals a mature approach to product design, focused on the realities of daily use.

Ultimately, the Flipper One’s serious, function-driven design is meant to signal that it’s an entirely different kind of tool. Zhovner is quick to clarify that this isn’t a replacement for the Flipper Zero. Instead, the two devices operate on different technological layers. Flipper Zero is a “Layer 0” offline tool for NFC, RFID, and other low-level interfaces. Flipper One is a “Layer 1” IP/network cyberdeck – a pocket-sized, open Linux computer. It can be a portable gateway, a smart home hub, a media center, or a radio platform for listening to everything from pilot communications to satellites.

By grounding its design in the world of serious hardware, Flipper has created a device that feels less like a controversial gadget and more like a piece of portable infrastructure. The Flipper Zero always looked like it was designed by someone who grew up on Game Boys and cyberpunk anime simultaneously, and that instinct paid off spectacularly. A toy-shaped hacker tool with a pixelated dolphin mascot somehow became one of the most culturally significant pieces of open hardware of the past decade, racking up a million units shipped and a string of government ban attempts that only made it more desirable. We’ve covered the Zero’s behind-the-scenes, and the throughline was always the same: great design lowers the barrier to entry, and a device that looks fun gets picked up, explored, and loved in ways that a purely utilitarian box never would.

Flipper One lands with that same energy, except the mascot is now visibly unhinged. The screen on the press images shows the dolphin yelling “Are you f*cking mad?” at the user for drawing too much power from the USB port, which tells you everything about the tonal direction here. Flipper One vs Flipper Zero: The Size Difference Tells You Everything You Need to Know

Someone has already printed the Flipper One. Not a real one, but rather a prototype model to show its size compared to the Flipper Zero. First reaction, it’s massive. Second reaction, where did they get the 3D file from? Well, Flipper Devices actually published full mechanical enclosure files for their upcoming Linux-powered handheld on Github. The CAD files put it at 152.6mm wide, against the Zero’s 97.5mm, a difference that becomes viscerally obvious in photos. The front face alone tells you what this device is for: a wide display recess for the 256×144 screen, four function buttons, a D-pad with integrated OK button, a dedicated joystick, and a lanyard/carabiner loop suggesting field carry over pocket carry. A Rockchip RK3576 SoC running Linux, an M.2 slot for modular radios, and dual-processor architecture all need somewhere to live, and Flipper gave them a proper home.

The repository breaks the enclosure into three published parts. The body is the main shell containing everything: display, controls, electronics. It ships as a solid exterior with an intentionally hollow interior in the public files, meaning Flipper is sharing enough geometry for accessory makers to work with while keeping the internal mechanical layout proprietary. The back plate, which covers the M.2 expansion port and swaps out depending on what module you have installed, is published in full including internal surfaces. Same goes for the antenna rail, a separate bracket for routing SMA antenna cables before the back plate closes, a decision born from actual testing where routing cables through an integrated back plate kept damaging connectors during assembly. These are not arbitrary design choices; every split in the enclosure reflects a specific problem someone ran into during prototyping and solved deliberately.

The modular back plate represents a fairly new (and exciting) direction for the Flipper One’s community. Because the back plate geometry is fully open, third-party manufacturers can design their own versions tailored to specific module configurations without waiting on Flipper. Someone building a custom SDR module with a non-standard antenna setup can design a matching back plate that fits the same screw pattern. The Zero had a thriving accessory ecosystem built on top of its GPIO header, and Flipper seems to be seeding the same dynamic for the One, except this time the third-party entry point is baked into the enclosure architecture from day one rather than discovered after launch.

The sheer size of the Flipper One printed next to the Zero tells you something important about where Flipper Devices thinks the market has moved. The Zero was designed for a world where the coolest thing a pocket device could do was clone your hotel key card. The One is designed for a world where security researchers want a full Kali Linux environment, SSH access, and swappable radio hardware on their person during a pentest, without pulling out a laptop. The cyberdeck community has been hand-building devices like this for years at significant cost and effort. Flipper is essentially productizing that whole category, and publishing the enclosure files before the device even ships is a very deliberate signal about who they’re building it for.
