Foldable ham stand lets you save space in your kitchen

If you live in a part of the world where ham is already served to you sliced and you don’t mind that, then having a ham stand as a kitchen staple might be strange to you. But there are also some parts of the world, particularly in Europe, where it’s pretty common to have that as a fixture in family gatherings, parties, or maybe even just daily life for those who really love this kind of cured meat. Most of those available in the market however are pretty bulky so they need to make space in their kitchen for it.

Designer: Francesc Vilaro

Spain is one of the countries that take their ham “seriously” and a Barcelona-based designer has come up with a solution to the space issue for the ham stand. What he designed was a folding ham stand called Jamonero that serves its main purpose which is to hold your ham while you slice it. When you don’t need it though, it can be folded and tucked into a drawer to save space for other kitchen accessories which you may need at the moment. It’s a small design adjustment to a simple accessory but it is pretty useful especially when you don’t have that big of a kitchen or a dining table.

The foldable ham stand is made of FSC certified beech wood and stainless steel. When you need to use it to hold your ham, the arm folds out and is held in place with a bolt. There is also an anti-slip feature that should keep the holder (and the ham) in place at your table or the counter and make it easier for you to cut and serve the meat. It’s also pretty easy to clean it, either with just a cloth or with water directly. There are two “variants” of the Jamonero, a smaller one for ham that weighs 5-7 kilos and a bigger one for the 7-9 kilos of ham.

It’s little tweaks for accessories like this that make a ll the difference for something as simple as a ham holder. Each piece that they’re selling (from Spanish kitchenware brand Lodivi) was designed and produced in Barcelona so there’s also a local thing going on there. So if you regularly buy legs of ham for your gatherings or regular meals, this is something you might want to have if you also want to be able to put it away in the drawer when you’re not using it.

This versatile kitchen aid will help you cook great meals without the mess

Nothing beats a home-cooked meal, made from fresh ingredients and with a sprinkling of care and love. That said, even the most seasoned home chefs dread the part that comes after the dish has been cooked, served, and consumed: the cleanup. Pots, pans, and cooking tools are pretty much a given, of course, but part of that process involves cleaning up the countertop, stove, or microwave, ready for the next use. Some of the mess could be avoidable if only oils and sauces didn’t sputter and splatter while they simmer, boil, or fry. Fortunately, that messy nightmare is now a thing of the past, thanks to this simple yet ingenious solution that keeps all that cooking goodness inside the cookware and off your stovetop. Best of all, you won’t even have to change a thing in your kitchen or abandon your favorite cookware.

Limit your Mess, Not your Cooking – SplatterDōm is a stovetop protector fitting 2 different-sized pots/pans. It helps keep your cooking area clean.

Cooking pots and frying pans come in many sizes, but they all have one thing in common: they’re just large enough to hold the food you’re cooking. Unfortunately, food has a tendency to splatter outside of these cooking vessels, adding to what you have to clean up after. While there are different types of “splatter guards” in the market, none of them can really live up to expectations. Mesh covers are only effective when they’re completely covering cookware and offer no protection the moment you need to stir the food inside. Metal walls around your stovetop protect everything else except the stove and yourself. Perhaps worst are those flimsy silicone cones that offer 360-degree protection but sit inside the cookware, which means the silicone is actually cooking in your food!

Continuous Access Without the Mess – SplatterDōm offers 100% access to your food without compromising the cleanliness of your stovetop.

SplatterDōm is a revolutionary kitchen tool that redefines what a splatter guard can and should be. This height-adjustable guard pretty much extends the sides of your pot or pan upward, ensuring that none of the mess ever jumps out to ruin your stovetop. What makes it different from regular splatter guards is that you still have complete access to the food that’s cooking inside, allowing you to continue stirring, adding ingredients, or watching your food turn into a masterpiece. SplatterDōm comes in two sizes to fit 8-inch & 10-inch or 10-inch & 12-inch cookware, so you can keep on using your favorite pots and pans without missing out on the mess-free goodness.

Microwave Safe – It’s 100% food grade silicone structure lets you use it as a microwave cover to heat up leftovers.

SplatterDōm is made of BPA-free, 100% FDA-approved food-grade silicone, and it can withstand temperatures of up to 450°F. This means that it is also designed to be used in microwaves to heat up leftovers or cook quick dishes, instead of buying those common plastic covers that are actually bad for your health. The ventilated lid itself can be used as a cover, in case you’re heating up shallow items.

Dishwasher Safe – SplatterDōm washes easily by hand or in the dishwasher.

Folds Flat for Easy Storage – It is height-adjustable to fit your cooking needs, and folds flat for easy storage.

Just as it helps keep your kitchen clean, the SplatterDōm itself is also easy to clean, whether by hand or inside a dishwasher. It folds flat as well, so it gets out of the way when you don’t need it, or you can hang it from its handle holes to proudly display your cooking helper. This versatile and innovative splatter guard helps cut down your cleaning time while providing complete access to your food, letting you enjoy cooking without worrying about the mess. So say goodbye to ineffective splatter guards that get in your way and say hello to a delicious meal from a splatter-free kitchen with the SplatterDōm.

Reusable Seal Tray helps keep veggies fresh and reduce single-use plastic

Anyone who has ever cooked something knows that you are not always able to use all the ingredients you’ve cut up even if you try to buy the exact recipe. And when you store these left-over vegetables and fruits in the refrigerator, there’s almost always single-use plastic involved. Thinking of kitchen accessories to reduce the use of these kinds of plastics is something that product designers have been conscious about the past few years. Users are also now on the lookout for things that can make life easier and help reduce carbon footprint at the same time.

Designer: Blank (Shanghai) Co.,ltd for Lékué S.A

This Reusable Seal Tray is a food preservation tray that is simple yet highly functional. It is able to preserve your pre-cut food ingredients in your ref, reduce oxidation, and also prevent odor contamination by other stuff inside your ref. It has a sealing system with a 100% Platinum Silicone flexible sheet that will still keep various shapes and sizes of vegetables and even cheese and sausages. There is a disclaimer though that what you can store here are those that have just a little liquid.

You’ll be able to use it in two positions depending on the size of the items that you’ll store. You just have to turn the tray either way in order to fit either your thin slices or the bigger pieces that you need to preserve. You can also store different kinds of food and different sizes in just one container so you can get stop using single-use plastics and also organize the stuff in your ref as well. It’s also dishwasher safe and you just have to disassemble the Platinum Silicone sheet on top before cleaning.

Using it is pretty easy as well. Just open it with the front tab and then put the ingredients on the base of the tray, turning it over depending on the size. Position the lid with the silicone sheet on top and press until it is properly fitted to the base. It’s already ready for storing in the ref after you’re satisfied with the fit and it’s sealed properly. It just comes in a light green color as it’s probably the color most associated with freshness.

The Reusable Seal Tray got an honorable mention at the Design Intelligence Awards this 2022. If you have an innovative design for a product, you can click here to enroll it FOR FREE.

Unique bottle opener concept is inspired by Chinese architecture

Most people have a lot of tools and devices in their kitchen that is mainly functional and not that decorative. All you need anyway is a knife to slice your veggies, a can opener to open your cans, a coffee maker to make your elixirs, and a bottle opener for your favorite bottle of beer. But there are product designers who will tell you that it’s possible to have both form and function. Well, at least we get a lot of those as product concepts and some of them even become actual products.

Designer: YUUE Design Studio

The Viiu Bottle Opener is a product concept for a tool in your kitchen that will mean more than just something to open a bottle of cola, juice, or beer. Normally you will just get a handle and a head whose main job is to just open that bottle with a crown. This time around you don’t get a handle but rather some decorative objects that will give you a pretty unique way of getting those drinks ready for you. At first glance, they look like some pieces of baubles or knick-knacks lying around but they do serve a very important purpose.

The design is inspired by window grill patterns, specifically those from classic Chinese architecture. There are three shapes featured: one hexagonal, one rectangular, and one with a semi-circular design. All of them have these patterns that may remind you of windows in old houses if you live in such a place influenced by this kind of architecture. While there are no handles to grip while opening a bottle, the grill design can help you with the grip problem.

I’m not sure though if something like this can be useful when opening bottle caps but the product renders seem to indicate it can fulfill its function. Well if it doesn’t work, at least you’ll have something pretty-looking lying around, maybe not in your kitchen but in your shelf housing all of your cute but useless knick-knacks.

This series of blind cooking utensils allows a multi-sensory experience for the visually impaired

Haptics of Cooking

Cooking is not for the blind because the preparation of ingredients alone can be dangerous to them. But in a world where everything must be inclusive, we must think of ways to include the visually impaired. It can be a challenging task, but the person behind the ‘Haptics of Cooking’ believes there are kitchen tools that can help. The term “haptic” alone tells us this idea can use the sense of touch and motion because cooking may be difficult without the sense of sight. Anything is possible if the design is credible and workable, and that won’t be a problem when it comes to cooking and food preparation.

The Haptics of Cooking is a special series of blind cooking utensils designed by the experience of touch. Presented by designer Boey Want at the DIA 2021 (Design Intelligence Award), this set is for the visually impaired. It received an Honorable Mention Award at last year’s DIA and other recognitions from different award-giving bodies that also focus on design.

The Chinese designer describes himself as a narrator at heart with his ability to tell stories through an object’s visual and functional design. His works usually encourage the sense of hearing and touch for people to experience the world without any established routines. For example, his five cooking tools have been designed for such purposes: Cutting Board, Knife, Tall Measuring Cap, Low Measuring Cup, and a Pan Lid.

Sectional Cutting Board

The Cutting Board allows the visually impaired to cut and slide food without the danger of getting their fingers cut. The round-shaped board is designed to keep the food neat inside, thanks to a flat surface and a groove where the cut food can be collected. There is small storage underneath the Sectional Cutting Board (a small gap) where the knife could be placed when not in use, this way, no one gets hurt.

Haptics of Cooking

The Close Holding Knife removes the fear of danger when cutting food because the knife is handy while keeping a sharp blade. This makes the knife more efficient because the grip is firm, and cutting can be done perfectly without repeating everything. A small knife is preferred by the visually impaired as it gives them total control and balance so this could be an ideal solution.

Haptics of Cooking

The Tactile Measuring Cup comes in two sizes (Tall and Low), but both work the same way; the only difference is the amount of water it can carry. What makes this efficient is that even without seeing, you can know the measure of the liquid by simply putting your fingers on a hole to feel if the amount of water is enough, instead of placing a finger inside. The idea of holes also prevents spilling as you don’t have to fill the cup up to the brim.

Haptics of Cooking 2

The Warm Pan Lid prevents burning, thanks to the wooden pan lid that allows friendly haptic feedback and safe touch. It also comes with a grooved inner edge for an all-rounded grab, while the lid can also carry the cooking ingredients. This way,  you can quickly put them on the pan when needed. So if you have similar smart product designs you want to share, feel free to submit an entry, and click here to enroll for the 2022 Design Intelligence Awards FOR FREE!. Godzilla gives you toothpicks in dispenser concept

You probably don’t use a lot of toothpicks during the day but it is something that you would occasionally need especially during meal times. Where it is stored is also something that you probably don’t pay much attention to, unless you have a restaurant or cafe or any place that serves food. But if you like collecting cute kitchen stuff, this concept for a toothpick holder might interest you. And if you’re a fan of that cute, cuddly Japanese-created film monster Godzilla, then you’ll wish this was an actual product.

Designer: 肖启航

GZL Godzilla is basically a toothpick container whose design is inspired by arguably that most famous of all movie monsters. It doesn’t look exactly like the kaiju we’re used to seeing in the movies but the toothpick dispersal device is reminiscent of it. It is tube shaped with a semi-opaque window with the initials GZL etched in it. The Godzilla design is found in the “scales” that are found on top, adding a bit of whimsy and color to something that is functional.

With just one press, you’ll get your toothpick out of the dispenser through a tiny hole at the top. It removes the “stress” of having the toothpicks stuck in your usual dispensers or having to constantly open and close containers just to get toothpicks to pick food out of your teeth or whatever you need it for. Again, it’s not the most important thing to have in your dining table or kitchen but it is a cute thing to display and use.

Aside from the actual product, what stood out with this concept is the “photo shoot” that they did for GZL. We get several renders with the toothpick dispenser starring as a Godzilla character in different scenarios, like at work, under the rain, celebrating children’s day, catching fish, worshipping at the Dragon Boat Festival, having a Christmas party, and resting. Now it will be cute if you did your own scenarios with the actual GZL if it becomes a real thing someday, sitting on your kitchen counter or dining table.

This clever iPad tray and organizer turns your messy kitchen into a smart kitchen

As someone who’s tried watching and following a recipe on YouTube, I can attest to the fact that cooking with gadgets nearby is a bit of a tragedy waiting to happen. You get your hands dirty, then your screen dirty, then you struggle to unlock your device because you got dough on the fingerprint sensor or the camera. Chances are you spill stuff on the counter and your phone gets drenched, or worse, you accidentally knock something over because you’re in a rush. Designed by mother-daughter duo Mirabela and Alessia, the sousShelf is a handy kitchen countertop device that organizes your workflow so you don’t leave a mess that you have to then clean up. The sousShelf, modeled to look like an organizer tray, comes with its own tablet and phone stand, containers for kitchen tools, a dedicated bottle opener, a set of coasters, and get this, a stylus that lets you control your gadget without getting your grubby paws on that pristine touchscreen display.

Designers: Mirabela & Alessia Muresan of AlessiaAdora®

A clever twist on the name sous chef (or an assistant chef), the sousShelf just makes life in the kitchen easier. You could be watching Netflix while cooking, filming a TikTok, or just watching a recipe video as you whip up something fancy for date night, and the sousShelf just makes sure everything you need is organized and accessible. The built-in tablet/phone stand means you can watch stuff on the screen without holding your device up, and the sousShelf even packs a stylus that works on capacitive touchscreens, so you can swipe, tap, type, and navigate without getting fingerprints or food on your expensive gadget.

Maple Finish

Walnut Finish

Designed and manufactured in Canada, the sousShelf is available in Maple and Walnut finishes using local, indigenous wood. Each shelf comes with 4 wooden coasters, two porcelain utensil-holders, a nested bottle opener, and a dual-tip touchscreen stylus. The sousShelf isn’t necessarily a kitchen accessory either – you could use it as a bedside organizer, a bathroom caddy, or just a dining table accessory that doubles up as a tablet stand and cutlery organizer.

Any Room Functionality – Use your sousShelf as a desk organizer, snack tray, or bathroom caddy.

While people were struggling with sourdough starters back in 2020, mother-daughter duo Mirabela and Alessia were focusing on solving much larger problems. Not everyone is an intuitive cook, and chances are you’re bound to want to consult a recipe (or an experienced cook) while preparing something in the kitchen. Determined to create an organizer that kept the kitchen neat, kept your gadget accessible, and occupied a small chunk of counter space, Mirabela and Alessia got to designing the sousShelf.

The shelf measures 18″ across, and 6.5″ in depth, making it perfect for counters, kitchen islands, or even dining tables. Its 0.33″ stand fits all standard tablets and phones (unless you have an extremely thick case), and the stylus is guaranteed to work with most contemporary touchscreens. Yanko Design readers can grab their own sousShelf for a special discounted price of $75 CAD ($59 USD) with international shipping beginning as soon as August 2022. Oh, and Mirabela and Alessia also pledge to plant one tree for every sousShelf sold!

Peel-Pal takes inspiration from fruit peels that we discard

I love fruits. But what makes me not always eat them is the fact that you need to peel most of them. I like fruits that I can eat immediately, not ones that I have to put extra effort into. But what happens to those skins once we’re done peeling them? Some are used as air fresheners while some are finding ways to re-use or recycle them. There are also those who find inspiration in these discarded parts of the fruits to create new products.

Designer: Hyunbin Yang

The Peel-Pal takes inspiration from several fruit peels that often take an arch shape once removed from its fruit. It basically serves as a button stand for your cutlery and utensils. There are five “flavors” of the utensil stands that you can choose from: orange, watermelon, kiwifruit, lemon, and grapefruit. The variants follow the colors of the fruits as well, specifically the colors orange, red, green, yellow, and orange.

This fruit-peel stand also has some support underneath to make it more stable. They look like an on/off button although it doesn’t necessarily do anything except to make your Peel-Pal more stable when you place your chopsticks or cutlery on it. It comes in a box that goes with the color of the stand itself. Design-wise and function-wise, it’s as simple as it gets. It adds a cute touch to your dining table especially if you have either colorful or monochromatic plates and utensils.

It’s unclear from the product page and description if the material they use for the Peel-Pal is actually made from materials from fruit peels. It would be great if that was so and if the peels are not just inspiration for the design. It would be hard though to make it from actual peels but at least in concept, it might just work. The important thing though for an actual product to be recycled from things like these to make sure nothing really goes to waste.

A folding digital kitchen scale that uses kinetic energy to help you go battery-free

If you don’t always measure ingredients in the kitchen, you might want to get a scale that doesn’t take up space or even needs batteries when it comes time to use it.

There are many things we take for granted until we realize we need them, and they are nowhere to be found. That goes for pens, blank sheets of paper, working batteries, or kitchen scales. Of course, these are also easy to purchase and keep, but you might not always need them all the time. One kitchen scale is designed to stay out of the way when you don’t need it and just work when you do, without having to worry whether it still has a battery inside when you need it the most.

Design: CASO

Kitchen scales come in all shapes, sizes, and designs, both the analog kind as well as more modern digital ones. In almost all cases, they take the same rectangular or circular plates that can take up precious shelf space. Digital scales, of course, also require power to function, mostly from batteries.

CASO’s Kitchen Ecostyle throws all that down the drain, so to speak. You might not even recognize it as a kitchen scale because of its unconventional design. It looks almost like a fat rectangular compass or protractor, with one leg that fans out to the side. This creates a gap where you can securely place a bowl that is too big to balance on the scale’s closed form safely.

Moving that leg also serves another purpose, though. It generates kinetic energy that is used to power the digital scale, at least for a short period. Not only will you no longer have to worry about batteries, but you also won’t have to be afraid of the batteries corroding over time when not in use. You can simply use the scale and then stow it away in a drawer or on some shelf without having to worry about a potential fire or chemical hazard in your kitchen.

The odd shape might need a bit of getting used to, but the benefits outweigh that brief learning curve. The CASO Kitchen Ecostyle’s unique form takes up less space than most other kitchen scales while also providing the power needed to use it. Along with its stainless steel construction, this makes it one of the most sustainable and environment-friendly kitchen scales you’d find in the market.

Innovative kitchen appliances designed to add a fun spark to your kitchen + cooking process!

The pandemic birthed a lot of home chefs, who discovered a deep and profound love for cooking! Surprisingly, I was one of them. Before the pandemic took place, cooking was a chore I completely avoided. But now, I honestly find it quite therapeutic! The pandemic, and all the free time that came along with it, somehow awakened my inner chef, and I do love making use of kitchen appliances in my cooking process. I feel they really cut down on my prep time, simplify complicated and tedious procedures, and make the mundane little cooking tasks a whole lot bearable. But quite honestly, I’m bored of the usual and traditional appliances that are lined up in my kitchen cabinet. So, how about kitchen accessories that promise to be totally fun and quirky, that not only look super cool but are also interesting to use? In my hunt for appliances that will liven up my kitchen space and my cooking process, I came across a whole bunch of designs that I am now completely dying to buy! From an adorable penguin-shaped egg boiler and holder to a back-scratching Grizzly bear that will grate your veggies, herbs, and cheese – these fun yet functional appliances are the breath of fresh air your kitchen needs!

Made from heat-resistant and food-safe plastic, the Egguins are an innovative way to store, boil, or serve eggs. The hollow penguin shape allows you to slide eggs (both small and large) into it, completing it visually and making it look like a flock of Emperor Penguins ready to dash right into the water (the visual metaphor of connecting the egg, the bird, and the water is just perfect)! Immerse the Egguins into a saucepan of boiling water using the handle above, and just lift them out when you’re done boiling them to the softness or hardness of your choice.

This uniquely playful grater comes from OTOTO, one of our favorite design houses, as a part of their new kitchen and home items catalog. Barry’s back-scratching abilities work best with carrots and cheeses, as its metallic back grates your produce to a fine pile that gathers right inside Barry’s chubby old body. Lift Barry up and your grated cheese or carrot is collected in a nice pile, ready for you to use in your cooking or garnishing!

The Food Crayons really don’t need much explaining – traditional crayons are made from wax and dye and are formed into the crayon shape… Food Crayons, on the other hand, are made from food ingredients suspended in an edible substrate, agar-agar. Commonly used as a gelling agent, and a vegan alternative to animal-based gelatine, the agar-agar helps bind the ingredients into the crayon shape. Once the crayon’s been cast, they can easily be shaved over food, flavoring it in an absolutely engaging and exciting way!

OTOTO‘s Tea Trap puts a fun spin on the art of brewing tea. Unlike those boring metal infusers, the Tea Trap models itself on a carnivorous plant that chomps down on your tea leaves. Once the Tea Trap’s stomach (or mouth) is full, just dunk it in a cup of hot water, and the tea begins infusing through the perforations on the sides of the infuser. Use the Tea Trap’s elongated handle to stir it around till your tea reaches the right color, and when you’re done, the Tea Trap will very kindly spit out the tea leaves into the waste-bin, because nobody likes eating tea leaves… not even carnivorous plants!

Inspired by a bird, Beerdy by Peleg Design is the most patient bottle opener you’ll ever meet! You can use Beerdy to open your beer for you, and then place it on the cap of your next beer. It’ll wait there patiently for you, while you finish your beer, and get ready to drink the next one! How cool is that? Beerdy is the most loyal bottle opener I’ve seen.

The Conchiglie is a neat, conch-shaped device inspired directly by the conchiglie pasta. Colored in yellow and molded out of food-grade silicone, the Conchiglie comes with a hollow inner that’s perfectly sized for a lemon half. Slip the lemon in and squeeze it from the outside and the Conchiglie does a wonderful job of juicing the lemon without getting your hands all sticky and messy. The silicone construction gives you the friction and grip you need, and a tiny strainer at the end of the conch helps catch the lemon seeds as you juice away.

Designer Gil Cohen has created Pelix for Peleg Design, a cute kitchen companion that will reduce your internal shrieks and actually lift your mood while doing dishes. This little pelican-shaped cloth and sponge holder will be perched on your counter and the only thing that will fly is the time taken to do chores. Pelix’s bright break is actually a cloth holder, so hang up that dishcloth while the body of the pelican is a cup for your sponge. Pelix makes it easy to keep dish cleaning essentials right where they are needed with its suction cup bottom, but unlike Ross Geller, it can pivot and make your life easier!

These tongs come with an interlocking design that turns them into a handly citrus juicer when joined together. However, when you’re done drizzling your salad with lemon juice, just pull the tongs apart into two spoons and toss your greens with them! The Juicepair’s 2-in-1 design makes it handy during use as well as while storing them. When interlocked, it’s easy to stash them in the drawer without worrying about one of them going missing, and while in use, the dual-purpose design makes the tongs the perfect set of tools for juicing citrus fruits, tossing/stirring food, or even serving up tasty meals.

The largest mammal on earth is now going to help you keep your teeth clean! Jonah-The Toothpick Dispenser by Peleg Design is a happy-go-lucky blue whale, that happens to store toothpicks in its belly and releases them through its spout. Just shake the dispenser, and pick the lucky one that escapes through Jonah’s spout.

Dip Sea is a dipping dish with a beautiful whale carved in it. Pour some balsamic vinegar and olive oil in it, and watch as the whale floats in a sea of oily heaven! Dip some bread in it, and enjoy your meal. Or if you’re in the mood for some Japanese, you could use Dip Sea to serve some soy sauce with your sushi.
