Dog Hut Desk puts a dog bed within the ‘d’ of your work desk

Modern homes are fancy and well-decorated! We take all the care to ensure our homes are furnished to the T, and this involves furniture we choose for our pets. However, not all apartments have space to accommodate additional furniture for our pooches, or for that matter, some parents – me included – want their pal to be just by their side at all times.

This demand owing to space constraints and over affection has given birth to pet furniture that is usable by both people and their pets simultaneously. It makes living with pets enjoyable and engaging and sparks an emotional connection between the two. A case in point is the Dog Hut Desk, which puts a dog bed within the ‘d’ of your work desk.

Designer: Liam de la Bedoyere

Designed as a new nap spot for a dog, the wooden desk has a metal U leg on one side and the small letter D-style bed for the dog as the support leg on the opposite side. With the dog by your side – napping in comfort – as you work, you can give yourself the peace of mind and the furry friend the ultimate comfort of a cozy space tailored for their slumber.

The interesting design allows provision for a cushiony mattress to fit within that the dog will love and would create a comfy space for it to sleep and relax. Presented as a desk that is perfect for you and your dog companion, it is the designer’s second iteration of the pet and human-friendly furniture after the cat-compatible desk.

The Dog Hut Desk with space for man’s best friend when working from home is a good idea if you have an obedient pet, but if your little pal is rowdy or a distraction from your focus, having it right under your eye may not be the best for your work routine. So, choosing this desk will come with its own user pros and cons. Think hard!

IKEA pet accessories collection is the minimalist vibe for fur babies

The past years we’ve seen the growth of “fur parents” so this means there’s also a significant spike in products that will appeal to this market. There are a lot of options out there when it comes to accessories for dogs, cats, and all other pets that may need different kinds of habitats, toys, etc. But when a big name brand puts a lot of effort into research and product development for our fur babies, then they immediately catch our attention.

Designer: IKEA

Swedish brand IKEA is getting into the pet world craze with their UTSÅDD collection that is meant to bring joy not just to the cats and dogs but to their “parents” as well. The brand came up with this 29-piece collection by consulting with veterinarians and pet product specialists and also testing it out on those who will actually be using the products, the cats and dogs themselves.

This means that the products are not just well-designed but also are dishwasher-safe, water-repellant, machine-washable, durable, and of course safe and gentle for the pets. The collection has some items for playtime like the soft toys for dogs and the play tunnel for cats but also has functional ones like pet bowls, beds, and houses. The habitats in particular, like the dog bed and the cat house can both be fun and useful.

The collection will be available globally starting this April. And like with a lot of IKEA products, there is a wide range when it comes to affordability with items ranging between USD $2-70. Also as with most items with the Swedish brand, expect a clean and minimalist vibe.

Petvation lets your pets in and out safely with a smart door that recognizes their faces

Every kid thinks that keeping a pet is easy-peasy, at least until they get to the nitty-gritty of feeding and grooming, and that’s only for pets confined at home. Even grownups have issues when it comes to letting dogs and cats out and back in daily, which requires installing a pet door that is often an open invitation for other critters to come uninvited into your home. We don’t have such problems with humans, thanks to advancements in machine learning and computer vision. It’s about time that we use those same technologies to keep our pets and our houses safe, which is the peace of mind that this smart pet door promises homeowners and their furry friends.

Common pet doors can easily let pets in and out easily, but they also don’t offer protection against other animals that aren’t your pets, especially raccoons and, worse, coyotes or wolves. Other doors might go overboard, on the other hand, and become safety hazards to pets themselves. There are also some smart doors available, but they require putting an uncomfortable collar around your four-legged companion, akin to asking your family to wear ankle monitors just so your smart home security will recognize them.

We live in a time of AI-powered facial recognition, and those don’t actually have to limited to be limited to humans. In fact, there are plenty of examples where AI accurately recognizes different kinds of animals, and that is exactly the kind of technology that serves as the foundation of Petvation’s innovative smart pet door. In a nutshell, this door can distinguish your pet’s face from other animals to make sure it only opens your home to extended members of your family.

Anti-pinch Sensor

Petvation is a lot more sophisticated and a lot smarter than that, of course. It also has motion detectors to make sure that it closes the door only after your pet has gone through it completely. And just to be completely sure, it also has an anti-pinch sensor that can detect objects as small as 0.2 inches, ensuring that no tail will be harmed ever again. And last but definitely not least, the door runs a self-diagnostic check every time it opens and closes to make sure everything is in order and warn you if one of its sensors isn’t working properly. Of course, everything can also be controlled and monitored through your phone app, putting you in complete control of the door and your pets, not the other way around.

The smart door’s intelligence actually goes beyond the technology and extends to the very design of the product. Rather than flaps or doors that slide sideways, Petvation’s specially-designed motor quietly raises and lowers the cover, which means it requires less space for a door to be installed. Along with the built-in security latch, the PC door and aluminum alloy frame ensure stability, durability, and safety, both for pets and humans alike.

Despite its advanced features, Petvation is designed to be easy to install and can be used on any type of door or wall between 20mm (0.8in) and 185mm (7.3in) in thickness. It is powered by a 12V wall plug, which is actually a strength rather than a disadvantage. It means that the smart door will always be getting the right amount of power to remain accurate and fast all the time. You can even power it from a power bank, which can come in handy during power interruptions.

Our human lives have become safer and more convenient thanks to innovations in technology, and there’s no really no reason why our pets have to continue living in the past. This smart door takes technologies and techniques that have been around for years now and applies them to something that sounds so trivial but has a compounding effect on the wellbeing of our pets and, in the long run, our own peace of mind as well.

This minimal Japandi-style coffee table doubles up as the ultimate cat home for your pet!

If you have a cat or two at home, then you know that they manage to weasel into almost any corner of your home, leading you to search for them for hours to no avail. They appear when they want to, they disappear when they feel like. Is it your cat’s home or your own? You’ll never know. But I do believe a well-designed piece of furniture, created especially for your kitty, could be a solution to this problem. It could provide your cat with his/her very own spot, a haven for them to cozy up in, and indulge in some much-needed me-time. And, Julia Kononenko’s Miu is a brilliant example of such a design!

Miu is a minimal and elegant coffee table, that would fit perfectly into your living room, functioning not only as a stunning centerpiece but as a comfy nook for your cat. Something about Miu almost reminds me of a mushroom! A circular wooden platform serves as the tabletop, whereas the lower body is bulbous in shape and a warm chocolate brown in color. The bulbous body is hollow from within, with a little kitty-sized entrance. Your pet can easily enter the table, and snuggle up inside. It’s your kitty’s own personal den! A soft cushion inside the table makes it a super comfy space for your cat. The legs of the table are cushioned as well, and also quite stubby! They are so cute to look at.

Miu is unlike other complicated and bulky furniture for cats, it’s a simple and clean design that caters to both humans and pets – functioning as a coffee table for us while also doubling up as a cat home! It’s the perfect integration of a furniture design and pet product.

Meet the Tesla Model-L, a cat tower with an in-built litter box and green moss for your pet to lounge in futuristic style!

Cat owners know how much their fur babies love towers. These big, sometimes not-so-tall structures benefit cats in several ways. First, they function as a play area and are ideal for scratching, climbing, and lounging. Second, since these appeal to a cat’s instincts, cat towers have gone through years of transformation now to reach a point where designers believe it’s a market big enough for Tesla to explore.

Before Elon Musk takes heed, designers Hyeonji Roh and Yeonhong Kim have conjured up the Model L – a cat tower named after the letter ‘L’ and is inspired by the cat’s tail. Drawing inspiration from the Tesla logo, which designers believe resembles a cat’s nose, this rather unusual cat tower has more to it than a traditional scratching post, perching slot, and a route to it. The Model L is pretty unique in the choice of material and finish. The glossy idea is rare for a product that usually utilizes wood and fabric. Nonetheless, it doesn’t let down on modernism. This tower with Tesla symbolism may not have the customary scratcher, but it gives your cat a high position to perch in when resting.

The design utilizes the entire top to bottom here. The top is where your pet will lounge. When nature calls, the middle section is designed for the pet to do their business, and the section at the bottom is terraformed to grow mosses, viewable through a transparent area in the middle. These mosses form a fascinating bright green carpet to replicate a natural environment for the cats. Given Elon Musk’s design of a flamethrower, I would say a rocket-inspired litter box is an idea that is entirely within the box! But it’s always fun to see the brand’s design approach inspiring designers to create unique products!

This pet house is designed like an accordion with silicone and magnets so it can be flat-packed!

Most people avoid using pet houses in their homes because it takes up too much space and they can’t tuck it away like they can with the pet beds. But Accordio is here to solve that dilemma, it is a portable, flexible, accordion-like pet house that can be expanded for your pet’s use or flat-packed away if you have guests over!

Accordio’s form drew inspiration from the designer’s niece who had a silicone bowl plate. “I was intrigued by its flexibility and portability. After some research, I found that silicone also has a fascinating collapsible feature, which was later adapted into a foldable house,” explains Seong. The unique pet house is a study in portable pet furniture. The silicone makes it super lightweight and gives it a distinct collapsible feature. Silicone not only makes it easy to carry along for outdoor activities or travel but is also very easy to clean. Accordio can be compressed into 1/6th of its full size by pushing both sides. The fabric cushion included conveniently fits into the collapsed form for portability.

The biggest challenge was keeping the pet house in a flattened shape when it is collapsed. Seong explored several ways like as snap buttons, straps, and more. But amongst all of them, magnetic frames were chosen to be the ideal final solution because they provided structural stability as well as visual clarity. There are a total of eight magnetic frames in Accordio’s structure and each magnetic frame is reinforced for stability. When collapsed, these frames adhere to each other and keep it compact.

This pet-friendly sofa’s two-tiered design means everyone has a place to rest!

Just like their owners, pets need space. A dog bed to call their own, a cat tower they can easily climb up and down, or a corner of the living room no human can reach. And when it comes to time spent together, it’s important for our human spaces, like sofas and big beds, to be accessible for our animal companions. To create a sofa for both pets and their owners, Hyun Jin Oh designed CoZY, an adjustable, two-tiered couch that meets both pets and their humans right where they are.

When it comes to pet furniture, during the construction phases, functionality sometimes outweighs style, but Hyun Jin Oh found a sweet compromise with CoZY. The sofa’s stripped-down frame is made from stainless steel, evoking an industrial-chic personality, and utilizes the tension of four bold, bright red straps of leather that wrap around the steel bars of CoZY’s armrest and base, two along the rear and one on both sides of CoZY. Hyun Jin Oh’s sofa was designed specifically to create a space that’s accessible for older and smaller dogs to take a breather. Since we typically rest on sofas, dogs naturally follow suit, but sometimes the sofa requires too high of a leap for a smaller or older dog to manage all on its own. In order to encourage dogs to join their human on the couch, Hyun Jin Oh’s CoZY design utilizes a pull-out wooden board that slides easily along the sofa’s X-axis.

Once the sofa’s wooden board is fully extended, a quarter of CoZY’s cushioned area lowers down for small and old dogs to easily hop onto and rest beside their owners. On the days, your dog would rather be alone, simply slide the wooden board back into place to return to CoZY’s original form. Even for the dog owners who typically don’t allow their animal companions to rest on human furniture due to the hassle that sometimes follows – stains from dirty paws, leftover clumps of fur from shedding, or maybe you just wanna spread your legs some – CoZY provides owners with plenty of legroom and separate sofa space, and also an already defined space for pets to relax without worry, so you can too.

This bedframe hides a cat maze and is a dream den for you and your pet!

Anyone who loves cats can relate to the feeling of excitement when the aloof pet decides to grace you with its presence. Cats are fickle creatures when it comes to attention-seeking, though. Some cats love to snuggle next to you, like a dog, but others prefer their alone time. My roommate’s cat will occasionally curl up in the corner of my bed, coexisting peacefully. But if I shuffle too much or, God forbid, try to scoot him over so that I have space to lie comfortably on my bed, he’ll get up and leave.

Dang it, I think, when this happens. I ruined the moment.

My needy, pet-loving self has tried to create a comfortable resting space for this cat. I’ve left nests of beach towels on my floor, hoping he’ll curl up on top of them. Sometimes I wonder, What could I do to make my bedroom his favorite place? The Gatrimonial bed frame, made by a company called CatLife, made this dream a reality. They make furniture that doubles as an adventurous cat’s dream. At first glance, the bed frame looks like a hollow base with circular entrances in each corner. It has plenty of space for your cat to stretch its limbs underneath your bed. When you lift the mattress, it reveals an elaborate maze to keep your feline entertained. The frame also has two sections with a splattering of tiny paw-sized holes that could either be peep-holes, or a little trap for unsuspecting paw swipes. Your ankles will not appreciate it, but your cat will love the hunt.

The idea behind the Gatrimonial bed frame is that it should be a comforting space for the pet and owner. The cat gets a secure, comfortable den, and does not feel as if you are invading his/her space. The furniture also provides plenty of stimuli to keep him/her entertained. I can already hear my roommate’s pet darting through his maze while I lie on the bed above him. Perhaps this cat-friendly furniture will encourage some casual bonding time between the two of us.

Furniture meets cat lovers for modern designs that help you perfect your work-pet balance!

ascend_desk_for_cats_layout

I was a certified dog person, till I got married to the ultimate cat lover and was subjected to hours of their family cat and more fluffy cat videos which helped me appreciate the whimsical humor cat owners love (given how witty sarcasm is my go-to style, this tells me something about my husband’s type). Okay, I may be downplaying my affection for cats, which reveals itself anytime I see one walking by and if I do get one home, this is exactly the kind of furniture I need to give myself the exact work-pet balance. Given our work-from-home scenario, it is imperative that our home be designed for all it’s inhabitants and the designs here respect your home and space as well as let you and your cat spend quality time – together as well as away!

ascend_01

In all the desk designs I’ve seen over the years, this is a first for me! It’s called ‘Ascend’ and it’s been created by Dan Devine for all the cat ladies and fellas out there. Like any cat person will tell you, the moment you give attention to anything but your furry friend, they’ll find a way to lounge on your keyboard or knock over your utensils until it’s back on them! Designed with this in mind, the wood desk has been crafted with multiple ramps and landings for cats to perch up and play. If you can’t fight ’em, invite ’em!

The Cat Flat has been carefully designed based on the advice of Sweden’s first cat psychologist, Susanne Hellman Holmström, who brought to light the 10 necessities apart from basic essentials that cats need for the best emotional and physical health. The needs range from scratching, cleaning fur, playing, discovering, being social, etc. and Cat Flat takes care of them all keeping in mind they spend most of their time indoors. Think of it as a hybrid of a home and a jungle gym for your cat. Based on the cat psychologist’s advice, Hellman Holmström collaborated with interior designer Eleonor Moschevitz created the details, aesthetics, and functionality of the Cat Flat.

People in small living spaces use low furniture (such as rugs, floor chairs) to build intimate relaxing areas while cats prefer covert spaces, but due to the limited space, there are not many places to hide or play. CatYou in a Circle by Jack Dogson (ironic huh!)didn’t want to separate the pets from their owners so it is designed to cleverly bring them together while also maintaining boundaries. The hollow armrests and backrest offer cats a playground and hiding territory while the coffee table provides a place to sleep. The woven bamboo texture makes it possible for owners to see their cats even when they are hiding and play with through its holes. The size of holes is different in different parts of the furniture to adapt to the needs of the pet as well as humans. The backrest holes are smaller to make the cats feel more secure. But holes above are bigger so that when people lean on the sofa, they can see through the backrest and find their cats underneath.

Are you a cat person? Well, I am, and if you are a cat person or a cat owner like me, you know the amount of attention and care that goes into looking after them. They’re fussy and prissy, worthy of all the luxuries the world has to offer! But what about the pet-owners? While our cats hold the center of our attention, we don’t want to compromise the aesthetic value of our homes as well. To please our feline friends and their owners, product designer Yoh Komiyama collaborated with Tokyo-based Rinn to create the NEKO Cat Tree, and to be honest, it’s pretty modern and fancy!

Forget those ugly carpet-covered cat towers! Give your furry friend a place to perch up and keep an eye on things with the Spaceship Gamma Clear Cat Perch by MYZOO. Feline tested and approved, the easy-to-mount design provides an elevated sanctuary for your cat to nap and hang out. A see-through dome provides your pet with panoramic views of your room while well-placed vents keep the inside fresh. Crafted from a combination of transparent acrylic and wood in light and dark finishes, it’s also designed to accent your interior.

Your pet is also your co-worker now so it is important to keep them occupied while you focus on work and since most of us live in shared apartments or small flats, it is important that we don’t buy a cat palace but invest in a more space-saving structure like Studio RYTE’s Catssup. This particular piece of cat furniture is extremely easy to set-up and seamlessly integrates with your current home setting minus the bulkiness of a conventional cat tree. In 2020, it is all about how modular the product is and that applies to pet furniture too. With Catssup you can create a DIY jungle gym by simply clamping the different parts onto existing furniture and changing the set-up whenever ‘you’ (read: your cat) need. The best part is that it doesn’t require any floor space so if you want to lie down and WFH – you absolutely can with the extra room!

The Circle Zero from PLUTO is a smart litter box that takes care of your cat’s business. Designed to be fully automated, fully enclosed, and exceptionally silent, the litter box comes with a completely enclosed design to provide a private experience. Sensors on the box detect the presence of the cat, and wait for a full 7 minutes after they’re done to automatically (and silently) scoop the waste from the litter and store it separately while completely containing and eliminating any odor too. Once the waste compartment is full, you can use any bag or liner to collect it and throw it away

The latest piece to catch our eye has been the Kyali cat climber by MADE for its almost human furniture-like design because usually, a cat climber would stick out but this one just blends in like a cozy stool! The climber has a warm inviting vibe because of the woody tones and the soft fabric cushioning that will instantly draw your cats in for a nap. It is a blend of a bed and a dynamic game for your pets. Featuring three shelves or levels, Kyali’s goal was to provide plenty of fun for your feline friends without taking up too much room. It has a modular structure that lets you adjust the shape to create more space for cats to explore or to make it more compact to store.

The designer He Yuhui has imagined everything your pet needs to live their best life possible and included it in the details of this modular cat house. Every traditional shape and element has been reimagined to add a fresh perspective. The scratching board, for example, has been created to evoke an emotional response from the cat and make it a pleasant experience not bound by the stereotypical forms but still meeting the behavioral need to dig/scratch. Play around with the shape and structure, create something that works for you and your pet and if your pet gets bored easily, just switch up the arrangement and voila, a whole new apartment! The scratch pads can be set up in various different ways to increase the playing area while still being a practical element.

Made from individual felt panels, the Catzz kitty-bed by Mirko Vujicic is a flat-packed bed that can easily be assembled in minutes. When put together, it forms the perfect haven for your kitten, being a combination of robust and sturdy yet fuzzy and comfortable. The Catzz bed even comes with a dangling toy that you can suspend from the bed’s ear (for the cat to periodically play with), and when the bed does get dirty, it can easily be disassembled and machine-washed. Paw-sitively delightful isn’t it?!

This modular cat climber was designed to fit in with your existing furniture set!

Furniture design has flourished during this pandemic as we all need something multifunctional, flexible, and space-saving – and it applies to pet furniture too. The latest piece to catch our eye has been the Kyali cat climber by MADE for its almost human furniture-like design because usually, a cat climber would stick out but this one just blends in like a cozy stool!

It has a modular structure that lets you adjust the shape to create more space for cats to explore or to make it more compact to store.

It keeps the space clutter-free while giving the cats enough surfaces to scratch and hole-some entertainment. The walnut and navy aesthetics give it an evergreen look that works for any interior style. Your cats would be happy and comfy with Kyali while letting you work from home in peace!
