MesoGlue Room Temperature Metallic Glue: Universal Solder

Welding and soldering form strong bonds that conduct electricity and heat, but they require high temperatures that can be dangerous to both people and equipment. A new company called MesoGlue claims that its eponymous metallic glue has all the advantages of welding and soldering but with the ease of use of polymer adhesives.

MesoGlue is made of metallic nanorods that are spaced just right such that a pair of coatings can lock into each other. It has two types: one made of silver and another made of copper “with other metals.” The latter can fuse objects together with very little pressure, like ordinary glues. The silver MesoGlue on the other hand needs a higher pressure to fuse without gaps, but the resulting bond has a higher electrical and thermal conductivity than the copper alloy MesoGlue.

I know that the concept of nanomaterials is hard to grasp, but that intro video is oversimplified and didn’t show the product itself. It doesn’t help that the company has no other demo videos as of this writing. That said, MesoGlue says it’s willing to demonstrate its wonder glue and join nearly any flat surface, but only at their facility.

Bender Wood Stove Ready to Smoke Some Meat in His Shiny Metal Carcass

Futurama’s Bender is quite possibly the greatest robotic character in the history of television or the movies. Sure, there are more sophisticated robots like David in Prometheus, but none has made us guffaw as hard as the perpetually drunken, self-absorbed, belligerent, and conniving robot that is Bender Bending Rodriguez. It turns out that one man likes Bender so much that he turned him into a wood stove.

This bad-ass ‘bot was made by a guy going by the name of “Rob Halftroll”, cut from old gas bottles, welded together to form his torso, neck and head. Bender’s legs were fabricated from tube steel, and cylindrical bands of metal were used for his arms.

Clearly, there was plenty of bending (and welding) that went into the fabrication of the Bender stove, so it might have been nice to have an actual Bender robot to help with the construction.

Steel and Bullet Chess Set Looks Killer

We’ve featured lots of cool and geeky chess sets over the years, but never one that’s quite as badass as this one, made from bullets and steel. Yeah! This chess set will chew you up and spit you out like an Expendables movie.

Every individual piece in this chess set is meticulously crafted by Olde World Collectibles and Creations. They take empty .223 caliber bullet casings and cut and bend them into various shapes – then mount them each on a hardwood base. Each one conveys the different chess pieces well, and I especially like the way he made the rooks look like little castles, and the king is just an undisturbed bullet, complete with tip (but hopefully no gunpowder inside.)

Not only are the pieces cool but the board underneath is a work of art, made from cut pieces of hot-rolled steel, welded together onto a sturdy frame. You could probably drive a truck on this thing without damaging it (but don’t.) Shipping weight for the set, including board and pieces is a whopping 23 pounds. Heck, yeah!

The Steel and Bullet Chess Set is available over on Etsy for $550(USD), and each one is made custom to order, so it’ll take 2 to 4 weeks for completion. If you can’t afford one don’t try and make your own using live ammo.

Gun Shaped Grill Makes for a Killer Barbecue

Ding ding ding- winner! This grill is shaped just like a Smith & Wesson Magnum 500 revolver, but juuuuust slightly bigger. This Smoking Gun Grill was built by a bunch of talented high school students from Idaho for their welding class. Yeah, while you were “reading” (sleeping through) Madam Bovary in school, these guys were building a massive barbecue gun- sucks for you. The gun grill is 15 feet long and went to a local gun shop for promotional use where I’m assuming it still resides today (I looked for an on-location shot but the shop is not on streetview and their website doesn’t show the grill or mention it).
