Maps users can also save their favorite national park hikes, custom routes, and locations to an all-new Places Library, adding personal notes about each spot.

Game Mode significantly enhances the gaming experience by providing more consistent frame rates, especially during long play sessions, and making wireless accessories like AirPods and game controllers incredibly responsive.

Apple Pay now offers new ways to pay, including redeeming rewards and accessing installments from eligible credit or debit cards. With Tap to Cash, users can send and receive Apple Cash by simply holding two iPhone devices together. Tickets in Apple Wallet offer a richer experience for fans, providing key event information such as stadium details and recommended Apple Music playlists.

SharePlay with Apple Music allows more users to share control of music playing from HomePod, Apple TV, or any Bluetooth-enabled speaker, making group listening sessions more fun and engaging.

The AirPods experience becomes even more personal and convenient with Siri Interactions, allowing AirPods Pro (2nd generation) users to simply nod their head yes or shake their head no to respond to Siri announcements. Voice Isolation ensures clearer call quality in noisy environments, and updates provide the best wireless audio latency for mobile gaming, along with Personalized Spatial Audio for more immersive gameplay.

In the Notes app, formulas and equations entered while typing are solved instantly with Math Notes. New collapsible sections and highlighting make it easier to emphasize important information.

The Journal app features an all-new insights view to help users track their journaling goals. Users can search and sort entries easily, save time spent journaling as mindful minutes in the Health app, and log their state of mind directly in Journal. A Journal widget is available for quick entry from the home screen or lock screen, and audio recordings are automatically transcribed. Users can also export and print journal entries.

Calendar becomes even more useful by showing both events and tasks from Reminders. Users can create, edit, and complete reminders directly from Calendar, and the updated month view provides a comprehensive overview of events and tasks.

The Health app has a redesigned Medical ID feature, making it easier for first responders to find crucial information in an emergency. The app also helps users better understand their data during pregnancy by making adjustments and recommendations to reflect changes in their physical and mental health.

Emergency SOS Live Video allows users to share context through streaming video and recorded media. During an emergency call, dispatchers can request live video or media from the user’s camera roll over a secure connection, making it easier and faster to get help.

Rewrite allows you to adjust the tone of your text to suit different audiences, whether you need to be more formal for a cover letter or add some humor to a party invitation. Proofread checks your grammar, word choice, and sentence structure, offering edits and explanations to help you improve.

Summarize is another fantastic feature, perfect for condensing long articles or documents into digestible key points or paragraphs. Imagine being able to take a lengthy research paper and quickly create a concise summary for easier review. These tools are integrated into apps like Mail, Notes, and Pages, as well as third-party apps, making them accessible whenever and wherever you need them. With Apple Intelligence, your writing becomes clearer, more precise, and tailored to any situation.

These tools are particularly useful because they enhance communication and productivity. For students, professionals, and casual users alike, having an intelligent assistant that helps refine and improve writing can save time and reduce errors. Whether you’re preparing a report, sending an important email, or simply jotting down ideas, these features ensure that your written communication is effective and polished.

2. Priority Messages and Notifications

Managing your communications has never been easier with Apple Intelligence’s Priority Messages and Notifications. This feature ensures that you see the most important emails and notifications first. For example, a same-day dinner invitation or a boarding pass for an upcoming flight will appear at the top of your inbox, so you never miss critical information. Instead of previewing the first few lines of each email, you can see summaries that highlight the key points, making it easier to manage your inbox efficiently.

The new Reduce Interruptions Focus mode is a game-changer for those who need to stay focused on important tasks. It filters notifications to show only the ones that require immediate attention, such as a text about an early pickup from daycare. This means fewer distractions and more time to concentrate on what matters most. By prioritizing urgent messages and minimizing unnecessary interruptions, Apple Intelligence helps you stay organized and in control of your communications.

These features are crucial for anyone who juggles multiple responsibilities. By keeping you informed of the most important messages and minimizing distractions, Apple Intelligence helps improve productivity and reduce stress. Whether you’re managing work emails, family schedules, or social invitations, having a streamlined communication system ensures that you stay on top of what truly matters without getting overwhelmed by the noise.

3. Audio Recording and Transcription

In the Notes and Phone apps, Apple Intelligence introduces advanced audio recording and transcription capabilities. This feature is incredibly useful for capturing detailed notes during calls and meetings. When you record a conversation, Apple Intelligence transcribes the audio in real-time, allowing you to read and review the content immediately. This makes it easy to keep track of important discussions and decisions without missing any details.

Once the recording is finished, Apple Intelligence generates a summary of the key points, making it simple to recall and share the most important information. For instance, after a brainstorming session, you can quickly review the main ideas and action items without having to listen to the entire recording. This feature saves time and enhances productivity by ensuring that you have accurate and organized notes at your fingertips.

The importance of these features lies in their ability to enhance efficiency and accuracy. For students, professionals, and anyone who attends meetings or interviews, having an automatic transcription and summary tool can significantly reduce the time spent on note-taking and ensure that no critical information is missed. This allows you to focus more on the conversation and less on capturing every detail manually.

4. Image Playground and Genmoji

Image Playground and Genmoji are two exciting features powered by Apple Intelligence that make communication and self-expression more fun and creative. Image Playground lets you create engaging images in seconds, choosing from styles like Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. It’s built right into apps like Messages, so you can easily spice up your conversations with personalized visuals. Whether you’re creating an image of your family hiking or a fun meme for a group chat, the possibilities are endless.

Genmoji takes emojis to the next level by allowing you to create unique, personalized emojis based on descriptions or photos. For example, typing “smiley relaxing wearing cucumbers” generates a Genmoji that you can use in your messages or as a sticker. You can even create Genmoji of friends and family members based on their photos, adding a personal touch to your digital interactions. These features make it easier and more enjoyable to express yourself visually, whether you’re chatting with friends or creating content for social media.

These features are especially significant in today’s online interactions. Visual elements, such as images and emojis, are essential for expressing ourselves. With tools to create personalized and unique visuals, Apple Intelligence enriches our connections with others. This approach makes conversations more engaging and allows for deeper, more personal expression, ultimately fostering stronger relationships and more enjoyable interactions.

5. Enhanced Photo and Video Search

Apple Intelligence makes finding and managing your photos and videos a breeze with enhanced search and editing capabilities. Using natural language processing, you can search for specific photos and videos with simple descriptions. For example, searching for “Maya skateboarding in a tie-dye shirt” quickly pulls up the exact photo from your library. This feature saves time and makes it easier to relive your favorite moments.

The Clean Up tool is another handy feature that helps you enhance your photos by removing distracting objects from the background without altering the main subject. This is perfect for tidying up those almost-perfect shots. Additionally, the new Memories feature allows you to create movies from your photos and videos by simply typing a description. Apple Intelligence selects the best images, crafts a narrative, and even suggests music from Apple Music to match the mood. This makes it effortless to create beautiful, shareable memories from your digital collection.

These features are invaluable for everyone who captures and stores digital memories. With the sheer volume of photos and videos we accumulate, having tools that simplify searching and editing can save significant time and effort. Whether you’re organizing a photo album, creating a digital scrapbook, or just looking for that perfect picture from last summer, Apple Intelligence makes it easier to manage and enjoy your visual content.

6. Siri Enhancements

Powered by Apple Intelligence, Siri is now more capable and contextually aware than ever before. This transformation means your assistant can understand and act on a wider range of requests, making it even more useful in your daily life. Whether you need to schedule an email, switch from Light to Dark Mode, or add a new address to a contact card, Siri can handle these tasks with ease. It can follow along if you stumble over words and maintain context from one request to the next, providing a more seamless interaction.

One of the most exciting improvements is Siri’s ability to perform hundreds of new actions across Apple and third-party apps. For instance, you can ask Siri to bring up an article from your Reading List, send photos from a recent event to a friend, or play a podcast recommended by a contact. The new design includes an elegant glowing light around the edge of the screen when Siri is active, making it visually engaging and easier to know when Siri is listening.

Siri now pulls from your messages, emails, and other apps to provide more personalized assistance. If a friend texts you their new address, you can simply say, “Add this address to his contact card,” and Siri will update the contact information without needing additional input. Additionally, Siri can understand and follow up on previous requests, making it easier to carry on more natural, conversational interactions. Imagine planning a day trip; you could ask about the weather at your destination, book a reservation at a local restaurant, and get directions—all in a seamless flow of conversation.

Another significant enhancement is Siri’s deep integration with personal context. For example, you can ask, “What’s the weather like near Muir Woods?” and then follow up with, “Create an event for a hike there tomorrow at 9 a.m.” Siri maintains the context of “there” to schedule the hike without needing you to repeat the location. The assistant also supports switching between text and voice input seamlessly, which is perfect for situations where speaking aloud isn’t convenient.

These improvements are crucial for making technology more accessible and user-friendly. By expanding its capabilities and making it more contextually aware, Apple Intelligence ensures that users can rely on Siri for a wider range of tasks. This can significantly enhance productivity and convenience, making it easier to manage daily activities and access information quickly. For anyone looking to streamline their workflow or simplify their interaction with technology, these enhancements make Siri an even more integral part of everyday life. Whether you’re coordinating a busy schedule, managing home automation, or simply trying to stay organized, the new capabilities make your digital assistant more indispensable than ever.

Conclusion

Integrating deeply with personal context, Apple Intelligence redefines how we interact with our devices. It understands your routines, preferences, and relationships, offering solutions that feel tailor-made just for you. With most tasks processed on your device, it keeps your data secure while boosting productivity through advanced writing tools, priority notifications, and real-time transcription. Fun features like Image Playground and Genmoji bring a personal touch to visual communication, while enhanced photo and video search make managing digital memories a breeze. Siri’s enhanced abilities enable smooth, conversational interactions, making everyday tech use more intuitive and efficient, all while upholding strong privacy standards. I hope this helps answer and explain what Apple Intelligence is, what the features are, and how you can benefit from them.

Apple was right about the iPad Calculator App… After 14 years, the iPad Calculator is Game-Changing

After over a decade, the iPad finally got a calculator app. Let’s just get one thing straight – Apple just made the calculator glamorous.

Steve Jobs debuted the iPad back in January 2010, that’s a whopping 14 and a half years ago… and mysteriously enough, the iPad never shipped with an Apple-branded calculator app. Whenever pressed on the issue, Apple spokespeople always had the same answer – they didn’t want to release a calculator app just for the sake of it. They wanted to get it right by designing the best-ever calculator app for the iPad. Up until yesterday, all that felt like deflection, that Apple didn’t quite care about calculators on the iPad (after all, it was an entertainment and visual productivity device). Today, however, Apple is vindicating itself after over a decade of judgment. The new iPad Calculator app debuted at WWDC and it’s INCREDIBLE.

The new Calculator app for the iPad comes with a familiar interface, but uses the iPad’s larger screen to its advantage, delivering more oomph thanks to larger real estate. It has a history feature and built-in unit conversions, but if you have an Apple Pencil lying around, the Calculator experience gets MUCH more interesting.

Pair the Calculator with the Pencil and you get what Apple calls Math Notes, a more interactive, personal experience that takes your hand-written notes and graphs and turns them into computable datasets. Write an equation and the calculator understands your handwriting and solves the equation for you. Draw geometry, label the parts, and add a ‘=’ sign and the app intuitively understands what you want to calculate, giving you the answer. It’s like the self-answering Horcrux book from Harry Potter and the Chamber Of Secrets but on steroids. The app understands what you’re drawing/writing and how you’re doing so too. It mimics your handwriting to deliver answers (so when you write 2+2=, it adds ‘4’ to the end in a similar writing style). You can change parts of your calculations and the answers update in real-time. You can turn equations into graphs, change variables, and watch the graph change in real-time too.

This brilliant reinterpretation of the calculator comes thanks to Apple’s integration of the calculator’s features in its Notes app. It’s nothing like anything we’ve seen before. In fact, we’ve seen ChatGPT and Google Bard (or Gemini) fail in this exact area, with their inability to understand graphs or photos of equations, resulting in hilariously wrong answers. The iPad calculator app sidesteps all that by giving you the ability to intuitively take notes and compute calculations using the Pencil. You don’t need to upload an image from a text book, just draw stuff out instead. Now whether the Math Notes will be able to do all this correctly is something entirely different. It could end up making the same mistakes as GPT and Google, or create unique errors that will only be made evident once the Calculator and Math Notes features roll out with iOS 18 this fall. For one, I can definitely say that math teachers are NOT going to be happy about all of this!

Daniel Arsham and Hublot Reinvent the Pocket Watch with the Arsham Droplet

In a bold departure from traditional watch design, Daniel Arsham and Hublot have collaborated to create a timepiece that is as much a piece of art as it is a functional object. The Arsham Droplet, a pocket watch that defies convention, pushes the boundaries of horological innovation. This creation captures the convergence of past, present, and future, encapsulated in a form inspired by the fluidity of water and the precision of modern engineering.

Designer: Arsham Droplet +

Daniel Arsham

From the first glance, the Arsham Droplet captivates with its organic, droplet shape, setting the stage for a tactile and visual experience that is unique and mesmerizing. The watch’s sapphire crystal body showcases material innovation, providing a window into the intricate mechanics within. Unlike the solid, opaque cases of traditional pocket watches, this transparency invites the wearer to engage with the movement of time on a deeper level.

The vibrant Arsham Green accents break the monochrome norm, adding a splash of color that is both striking and playful. This bold choice enhances the aesthetic appeal and underscores the watch’s modern, innovative identity. The incorporation of titanium and rubber elements further distinguishes the Arsham Droplet from its predecessors, emphasizing durability and contemporary design sensibilities.

This limited-edition masterpiece, restricted to just 99 pieces, is a collector’s dream. The collaboration between Daniel Arsham and Hublot challenges the status quo, presenting a pocket watch that is anything but ordinary. It is a daring exploration of form, function, and artistry, set to redefine the future of watchmaking.

Design, Craftsmanship, and Functionality

The Arsham Droplet diverges from traditional pocket watches with its unique drop shape, reminiscent of fluid droplets. This form is not only visually striking but also ergonomic, ensuring a comfortable fit in the hand. The design reflects Daniel Arsham’s fascination with organic, fluid forms found in nature, creating a seamless blend between natural aesthetics and technological precision.

The use of sapphire crystal as the primary material enhances the tactile and visual appeal. It offers exceptional clarity and durability, allowing an unobstructed view of the intricate mechanics within. This choice of material ensures that the watch maintains its pristine appearance over time, resisting scratches and wear. The sapphire crystal’s transparency also highlights the inner workings of the watch, making the movement a central visual element. Traditional pocket watches often utilize materials such as gold, silver, or stainless steel, which, while luxurious and durable, do not offer the same level of transparency or modern aesthetic as sapphire crystal.

Titanium is used for the case and chains, lending the watch a modern, industrial aesthetic. Its lightweight yet strong properties enhance the overall durability of the watch, ensuring it can withstand daily use. The addition of Arsham Green rubber bumpers adds a contemporary touch, providing extra protection against impacts and a striking visual contrast. The vibrant green color pops against the metallic and clear elements, drawing the eye and adding a playful element to the design. In contrast, traditional pocket watches typically use more classic materials like leather for the chain or fob, which offers a different, more vintage aesthetic.

The craftsmanship involved in creating the Arsham Droplet is meticulous. The open-worked titanium case resembles delicate lace, showcasing Hublot’s expertise in detailed metalwork. This intricate design is not only a realization of technical skill but also of artistic vision. The delicate, almost skeletal structure of the case allows light to pass through, creating dynamic shadows and reflections that change with movement. Traditional pocket watches tend to have solid cases with engraved or polished surfaces, offering a more static visual appeal.

Arsham Droplet on a stand

The watch can be worn in three different variations: as a pocket watch, a pendant, or an eye-catching table clock. This versatility allows users to adapt the timepiece to various settings and personal styles. The titanium chains and decorative stand provide additional options for display and wear, emphasizing the watch’s multifunctionality. The stand itself is a work of art, complementing the watch with its smooth curves and reflective surfaces. Traditional pocket watches are primarily designed for pocket wear and occasionally come with chains or fobs but rarely offer the same level of versatility in wear and display.

Technical Specifications, Artistic Vision, and Collaboration

Measuring 73.2 mm by 52.6 mm by 22.5 mm, the Arsham Droplet is substantial yet manageable in size. The ergonomic design ensures it fits comfortably in the hand, while the smooth, rounded edges enhance its tactile appeal. At its heart lies Hublot’s Meca-10 manufacture movement, which boasts a 10-day power reserve. This enhances the user’s connection with the timepiece, offering a prolonged period of uninterrupted use. The exposed gears and mechanical components are functional and add to the watch’s aesthetic allure, showcasing the complexity and precision of its inner workings. Traditional pocket watches often feature mechanical movements as well, but the extended power reserve and visible mechanics of the Arsham Droplet provide a more interactive and engaging experience.

The double-sealing system and 30-meter water resistance ensure the watch is durable and capable of withstanding everyday wear. These features make the Arsham Droplet both a beautiful object and practical, suitable for various environments and activities. In contrast, many traditional pocket watches lack significant water resistance, making them more susceptible to damage from moisture.

Arsham is celebrated for transforming everyday objects into “future relics.” The Arsham Droplet reflects this vision, blending the past, present, and future in a captivating and unexpected way. As Arsham notes, “The Arsham Droplet is a true realization of the power of collaboration. By combining Hublot’s technical expertise with my own artistic vision, we have created a timepiece that transcends the traditional pocket watch.” This collaboration is a fusion of art and horology, pushing the boundaries of what a timepiece can be. Traditional designs tend to adhere to more established aesthetic and functional norms, focusing on heritage and classical elegance.

Hublot’s commitment to innovation and material mastery is evident in this collaboration. The seamless integration of advanced materials and technical precision showcases Hublot’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of horology. Their expertise in crafting complex, high-performance watches is perfectly matched with Arsham’s creative vision, resulting in a product that is both a functional timepiece and a piece of art.

Limited Edition and Collectibility, Visual and Aesthetic Details

Limited to just 99 pieces, the Arsham Droplet is a true collector’s item. Its distinctive design and exclusive production run make it highly desirable among watch enthusiasts and art collectors alike. Ricardo Guadalupe, Hublot CEO, emphasizes the unique nature of this collaboration: “Together with Arsham, we made the impossible possible! The Arsham Droplet is a realization of Hublot’s unwavering dedication to pushing the boundaries of both form and function.”

The Arsham Droplet’s color scheme features a harmonious blend of clear sapphire crystal and Arsham Green accents. The open-worked titanium case and custom rubber bumpers add visual interest, while the artist’s monogram is a subtle nod to Arsham’s signature style. The green accents are strategically placed to highlight key design elements, such as the edges of the case and the tips of the hands, ensuring they stand out against the more muted metallic tones.

The overall aesthetic is both futuristic and timeless, challenging conventional notions of pocket watches. The combination of transparent, reflective, and matte surfaces creates a dynamic visual experience, with each angle revealing new details and interactions between light and shadow. The design invites viewers to explore it from multiple perspectives, appreciating the interplay of form, color, and material.

By integrating advanced materials, meticulous craftsmanship, and a visionary artistic approach, the Arsham Droplet redefines the boundaries of watchmaking. This limited-edition pocket watch stands as a realization of the power of collaboration and the endless possibilities of horological design.

Is the HMD Skyline the Nokia Lumia Revival We’ve Been Waiting For?

The rumor mill is churning for HMD, the company behind the Nokia brand of smartphones. Their upcoming phone, codenamed Tomcat and now seemingly confirmed as the HMD Skyline, is generating excitement with its feature set and targeted price range. Slated for a July release, the Skyline is shaping up to be a mid-range contender with high-end features. Leaks suggest a €520 ($565 USD) price tag, positioning it above HMD’s recent offerings. It will boast 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but most notably, leaks show a design language that’s highly reminiscent of Nokia’s Lumia range. The phones boast sharp corners and colorful bodies that hark back to Nokia’s Windows Phone days.

Designer: HMD Skyline

The display is rumored to be a highlight, with a FHD+ OLED touchscreen featuring a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Powering the device will likely be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 SoC, a capable chip for everyday tasks and even some gaming. Camera enthusiasts will have a triple-lens setup on the back to play with, rumored to consist of a 108MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide sensor (likely), and a 2MP macro or depth sensor. Selfies will be handled by a 32MP front-facing camera.

Keeping the phone juiced is expected to be a 4,900mAh battery with support for 33W fast charging. Durability is also addressed with IP67 certification for dust and water resistance. The Skyline is also said to run the latest Android 14 operating system out of the box and will have an under-display fingerprint sensor for added security. Stereo speakers round out the package for an immersive entertainment experience.

Although HMD hasn’t officially released any images, these blurry leaks are proof that the Nokia brand language is alive and well. The company’s Lumia series captured many hearts back in Nokia’s heyday, and even though Satya Nadella (who shut Nokia’s mobile division down) said that the Windows Phone was a mistake, their catchy design language clearly wasn’t. The Skyline will allegedly be available in four gorgeous colors – pink, blue, green, and yellow. A sub-600 price tag and fairly impressive specs make it a great snag for anyone bitten by the nostalgia bug.

Logitech Debuts Wave Keys for Mac: Ergonomic Keyboard for Apple Enthusiasts

In an exciting announcement today, Logitech expanded its “Designed for Mac” lineup with the introduction of the Wave Keys for Mac, an ergonomic keyboard crafted to provide comfort and enhance productivity for Mac users. This launch, set to coincide with the release of other Mac-centric peripherals in Logitech’s portfolio, underscores the company’s commitment to creating seamless, user-friendly experiences within the Apple ecosystem.

Designer: Logitech

Ergonomics Meets Mac-Specific Design

The Wave Keys for Mac stands out as Logitech’s first ergonomic keyboard specifically designed for the Mac, adapted from the Wave Keys that launched at the end of last year. Emphasizing comfort and usability, it features a signature wave shape that ensures a natural typing posture. This wavy design positions the hands, wrists, and forearms in an optimal manner, reducing strain and promoting comfortable typing throughout the day.

A key highlight of the Wave Keys for Mac is its cushioned palm rest, which comprises three layers: memory foam, high-density foam, and a knitted fabric covering. This thoughtful design offers 57% more wrist support compared to traditional Logitech keyboards without palm rests, making it an ideal choice for prolonged use.

Compact and Versatile

The compact layout of the Wave Keys for Mac is not only space-saving but also strategically designed to promote a more natural shoulder position while using a mouse. This makes it a practical addition to any desk setup, particularly for those who prioritize ergonomics without compromising on functionality.

Further enhancing its appeal, the keyboard includes easy-to-use +4° tilt legs, allowing users to adjust the keyboard’s angle to their preference for maximum comfort.

Seamless Integration and Personalization

Logitech’s commitment to enhancing user experience is evident in the Wave Keys for Mac’s seamless integration with macOS, iPadOS, and iOS devices. Users can connect up to three Apple devices simultaneously and switch between them effortlessly with the tap of a button. This multi-device capability is complemented by the Logi Options+ app, which enables users to personalize their keyboard shortcuts and optimize their workflow.

The Wave Keys for Mac also boasts an impressive battery life, capable of lasting up to three years on the included AAA batteries, reducing the need for frequent replacements and ensuring consistent performance.

Sustainable Design

In line with Logitech’s dedication to sustainability, the Wave Keys for Mac is made with 48% post-consumer recycled plastic, excluding the plastic in the printed wiring assembly, receiver, and packaging. This eco-friendly approach aligns with Logitech’s broader initiative to reduce the carbon footprint of its products and promote environmentally conscious manufacturing practices.

This launch is part of a broader initiative by Logitech to cater to the needs of Mac users. Alongside the Wave Keys for Mac, Logitech is also introducing other products such as the MX Keys S for Mac, MX Keys S Combo for Mac, MX Anywhere 3S for Mac, and MX Keys Mini for Mac. These additions are designed to enhance productivity, streamline workflows, and ensure ergonomic comfort for Mac users.

Delphine Donné, Vice President and General Manager of Personal Workspace Solutions at Logitech, highlighted the company’s focus on integrating user-centric solutions with the Apple ecosystem while maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability. “With a focus on optimizing workflow, productivity, and comfort, our Designed for Mac portfolio empowers Apple users to unleash their creative potential and enjoy day-long comfort at the desk without sacrificing Mac compatibility and look,” said Donné.

The Wave Keys for Mac will be available for purchase in May 2024 at a price of $59.99.

Steve Jobs would be absolutely proud of how far the new iPad Pro M4 has come

Here’s a snapshot of the new iPad Pro – an industry-leading M4 Chipset, Tandem OLED screen technology, a design thinner than any other Apple device ever made, nano-textured glass, studio-quality mics, graphite-sheet-infused hardware and copper-infused logo for better thermals, and an absolutely game-changing Apple Pencil Pro. It’s almost as if Apple is operating with alien technology.

I’ve mentioned this in the past that the iPad Pro really has no true competitor. It’s left Android tablets so far behind that almost every Galaxy, Pixel, or OnePlus tablet is just a budget competitor with Apple’s regular iPad. The iPad Pro has always been in a league of its own, and truth be told, I entered the Apple event thinking we’d get an incremental iPad Pro M3 update… because why does Apple really have to blow minds any more than it already has? Turns out I was absolutely wrong, because the more-than-one-year wait for a new iPad Pro was absolutely worth it.

The tablet PC itself was a category that Jobs pioneered, ushering in a new era of handheld devices that would go on to become the intermediary between a phone and a laptop. Jobs introduced the iPad as a multimedia device back in the day, but today the iPad Pro is much more. In fact, it’s so ridiculously powerful that it could dethrone even Apple’s own MacBook. The landscape camera and Magic Keyboard with the function row are just two small updates that put the iPad Pro more and more in MacBook territory… except with an XDR touchscreen, a brilliant stylus, a flawless front-facing camera with LiDAR, and with FaceID – all features that the MacBook currently lacks.

Yes, I sincerely believe that if Jobs were around today, the iPad Pro M4 would have blown his mind because I’m pretty sure the CEOs of Samsung, Google, OnePlus, Huawei, and Microsoft are all mighty pissed at how much Apple has leapfrogged their own tablet efforts. There’s really no comparison between tablets the way there is between phones and even to some extent between smartwatches. No Qualcomm chipset matches the M4’s capabilities, neural engines (NPUs) on tablet chipsets aren’t that common or powerful (to our knowledge, only Microsoft’s Surface Pro has them), and the fact that the iPad is so good it could potentially eat into Chromebook sales is probably really irking some companies right now.

So what makes this iPad so ground-breaking? Well, for starters, pretty much all of us entered into this keynote expecting the usual – a chip upgrade, the shifting of the camera module, and maybe some Pencil tweaks. However, what Apple served up instead was miles ahead of what anyone could think. The first iPad Pro was touted as a magical piece of glass, given how thin and compact it was – this new iPad Pro, even with its new almighty M4 chip, is thinner than any iPad ever made. At 5.3 and 5.1 millimeters respectively (the 11 and 13-inch models), the new iPads are thinner than the thinnest iPod. Heck, they’re a full 40% thinner than an AirTag. AN AIRTAG.

That isn’t all, Apple’s new design is a combination of incredible engineering and borderline futuristic material sciences. The new screen gets bumped up from Retina to Tandem OLED, a technology that Apple developed in-house, merging two OLED panels together to bring screen brightness up to a peak of a whopping 1600 nits. Meanwhile, a nano-textured glass helps cut glare while refracting ambient light perfectly without causing any clarity issues. A better screen, an M4 chipset, and a radically thinner design obviously means the iPad Pro is prone to immense heating (it doesn’t have a fan the way laptops do either), but that’s where Apple’s ingenuity shines again. Instead of simply relying on machined aluminum, the new iPad Pro’s housing has graphite sheets incorporated into it… and that Apple logo on the back, that also has copper infused into it too, helping turn the iPad’s body into a much more efficient heat sink to dissipate heat.

The iPad Pro’s nano-textured glass

The new iPad Pros also have better speakers, a set of studio-grade microphones, and a repositioned landscape camera that manages FaceID as well as functions as the perfect video-conferencing camera with CenterStage capabilities. The camera sits right where the wireless charging coil for the Apple Pencil would otherwise sit, so the fact that Apple’s managed to squeeze both of those in, while still making the iPad Pro thinner than before seems like a borderline miracle.

The new iPad Pro is also complemented by a redesigned Magic Keyboard that’s slimmer, and has an all-new function key row and a pressure-sensitive trackpad… and a Pencil Pro that’s so ground-breaking it puts other styluses to shame (fun fact, the Pencil Pro got 5 full minutes of coverage in a 44 minute keynote, including an in-depth breakdown by Procreate CEO, James Cuda), but more on that in a separate article. Despite its radical redesign, the iPad Pro doesn’t get a price-bump. Instead, it still starts at $999 for the 256Gb model (the 128Gb model is now discontinued), and $129 for the Pencil Pro. Even by Apple’s own standards, that’s a massive technological leap for the same price each year. Like I said, Jobs would be absolutely chuffed.
