OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's house may have been the target of a second attack after San Francisco Police Department arrested two suspects for a reported shooting in the Russian Hill neighborhood. The SFPD said in a press release that police officers responded to a "suspicious occurrence of possible shots fired" at around 5:56 AM ET / 2:56 AM PT on Sunday, April 12.

SFPD's Special Investigation Division took over the case and have since detained both 25-year-old Amanda Tom and 23-year-old Muhamad Tarik Hussein, seizing three firearms in the process with the help of a warrant. The two suspects were charged with negligent discharge.

According to the initial police report, as reported by The San Francisco Standard, two people inside a Honda sedan stopped in front of Altman's property that spans from Chestnut Street to Lombard Street. The police report also noted that the passenger appeared to fire a round at the Lombard Street side of Altman's property. The property's security personnel reported hearing a gunshot and there was surveillance footage that recorded the incident, according to the report.

This could be the second instance of violence targeting Altman and his residence in a matter of days. On Friday, a 20-year-old man allegedly hurled a Molotov cocktail at Altman's home, which caused a fire on one of the property's exterior gates, according to SFPD. The San Francisco Standard reported that there were no injuries in either incident. Daniel Moreno-Gama, the 20-year-old suspect from Texas, was charged on April 13 with murder and attempted arson. According to The New York Times, he wrote a document that “discussed the purported risk AI poses to humanity. The document also reportedly included the names and addresses of other executives, investors and board members of AI companies.

Waveshare’s PocketTerm35 takes a more deliberate approach, landing somewhere between a purpose-built tool and a proper portable computer. Compatible with the Raspberry Pi 4B and Pi 5, it wraps a complete Linux terminal experience into a handheld unit that’s ready to use right out of the box. Everything from the display and keyboard to the battery and connectivity is already integrated, so there’s nothing left to hunt down or assemble.

At 93.5mm x 168.5mm x 37mm, the PocketTerm35 fits comfortably in one hand, though it has enough weight to feel substantial rather than cheap. The front panel is CNC-machined aluminum, giving the face a solid, slightly industrial character. The rear is plastic, which helps keep the overall weight manageable. Status LEDs sit above the display, and dedicated boot and reset buttons are tucked on the back.

The 3.5-inch IPS touchscreen sits at a 640 × 480 resolution, which is modest by modern standards but appropriate for a terminal environment where text clarity matters more than pixel density. Optical bonding seals the glass to the panel, reducing reflections and making the screen usable outside without squinting. The 5-point capacitive touch surface sits under toughened glass with 6H hardness, which should hold up well against daily wear.

Below the screen is a 67-key QWERTY silicone keyboard laid out in a standard layout for typing commands, editing code, or navigating menus. A dedicated RP2040 microcontroller manages keyboard input, screen brightness, and volume, offloading those control tasks from the Raspberry Pi itself. The arrangement keeps the main processor free for heavier work, which is the kind of practical engineering detail that makes the difference in a device like this.

Power comes from a 5,000mAh lithium battery with a built-in UPS system that supports seamless switching between battery and external power without losing your session. You can run it plugged in at your desk, then pull the cable and walk away without any disruption to whatever’s running. It’s the kind of reliability that makes a handheld device genuinely trustworthy to use rather than just technically portable on paper.

Connectivity is where the PocketTerm35 avoids the usual compromises. Four USB-A ports and an RJ45 Ethernet jack handle wired needs, alongside a 3.5mm audio jack and a 2W built-in speaker. An I2C expansion header opens things up for custom hardware add-ons. It also supports RetroPie, so the same machine that handles a terminal session during a work trip can become a retro gaming console once the day is done, especially considering it has ABXY buttons.

The PocketTerm35 ships in a few configurations. The Pi5 variant includes a 1GB Raspberry Pi 5, a 64GB microSD card with the system preloaded, and the 5,000mAh battery, all for $148.99. A Pi 4B version is available for $179.99. Developers who’ve been carrying a laptop just to have a real terminal within reach might find the PocketTerm35 a far more sensible answer to that specific problem.

MJ Fraser Just Turned His Childhood Garden Into Living Light

Most lamps get designed around a concept. MJ Fraser designed his around a memory. His Trees From The Garden collection started not with a mood board or a material swatch, but with the actual trees that grew in his childhood garden. He pressed the bark and branches directly into moulds, one section at a time, and the result is a series of lamps that look like they were pulled straight from the forest floor, still carrying the warmth of something lived in.

That personal starting point matters more than it might seem at first. A lot of sustainable design today leans heavily on the idea of nature while keeping a safe aesthetic distance from it. Fraser collapsed that distance entirely. The irregular textures across each piece, the way no two lamps in the series look exactly alike, these aren’t stylistic choices made in a studio. They’re what happens when you let nature do the actual drafting.

Designer Name: MJ Fraser

The material Fraser works with is Worbla, a biodegradable thermoplastic that contains roughly 30 percent waste sawdust. That sawdust detail is worth sitting with for a moment. The material is literally made, in part, from the same kind of organic matter it’s being shaped to resemble. It’s a closed-loop logic that feels almost poetic, and it carries through into the production process as well. Offcuts from fabrication don’t get discarded. They get reheated and folded back into the work as welding material or as internal structural support for the pieces. The heat-activated adhesive properties of the material mean no additional bonding agents are needed, which removes one more synthetic component from the equation. Surfaces are finished with natural mineral paint, keeping the material story clean from start to finish.

All of that restraint shows up in the final objects. These aren’t lamps trying to look rustic, and they’re not performing sustainability for a press release. They carry an honesty that is harder to manufacture than the pieces themselves. Looking at them, you get the sense that Fraser wasn’t chasing recognition for the materials. He just wanted the materials to be right.

I’ll be upfront: I think the design conversation around sustainable materials has grown a little comfortable with congratulating itself. A project announces it uses a bio-based material and that tends to become the whole story. What Fraser is doing here is structurally different. Every decision in the process has a reason, and those reasons loop back into each other. The sawdust in the thermoplastic connects to the trees. The scrap material folds back into the structure. The moulds taken from real bark connect back to the childhood garden where the whole thing began. Nothing in this collection is decorative justification.

The lamps also resist the visual sameness that tends to flatten sustainable design into a single recognizable aesthetic. Because each mould comes from a specific section of a specific tree, each piece in the collection reads differently. The series is unified by process and material, not by uniformity, and that’s a meaningful distinction. It means the collection gets more interesting the more pieces you encounter, rather than feeling like variations on the same idea.

There’s a growing appetite right now for objects with a legible origin, things you can trace back to a source, a decision, a place. Consumers are more skeptical of greenwashing than they’ve ever been, and the visual language of sustainability, the linen textures, the muted tones, the vague nods toward nature, has started to feel hollow when it’s not backed by real process thinking. Trees From The Garden lands as a direct answer to that skepticism, not because Fraser set out to make a statement, but because the work is too specific to be anything other than genuine.

A lamp made from a mould of bark from a childhood garden is, on one level, an incredibly quiet object. On another level, it’s a pretty compelling argument for what design can look like when nostalgia and material rigor are given equal weight.

Picture this: You're a senior Meta employee looking for feedback from the CEO. But, instead of hearing from the real Mark Zuckerberg, you get a response from a Zuckerberg AI character. As absurd as that sounds, it could eventually be a reality. 

Meta is reportedly working on such an AI character, training it on Zuckerberg's mannerisms, tone and publicly available statements, according to the Financial Times. The character is also learning about the CEO's thoughts on recent company strategy, with the idea that it could offer advice to Meta employees. 

The company has reportedly, for some time, been working on creating photorealistic, 3D animated AI characters that can manage interactions. However, it now appears to be focusing on this Zuckerberg AI character, which would interact with employees when the CEO can't or doesn't want to.

This additional AI tool follows last month's news that Zuckerberg is creating an AI agent to help him do his job, first reported by the Wall Street Journal. It would reportedly do things like finding answers for him, but there aren't many details of the still developing AI agent.
