Smart pill dispenser concept safeguards your medicine from kids

Pill boxes and dispensers are becoming more common inside households, especially those with members that require daily medication for their health. The simplest designs are just containers with compartments for different days, but there are also more sophisticated machines that try to automate that routine so that you won’t forget to take your pills. Unfortunately, neither of these solutions takes into account unauthorized or accidental access to those medicines, especially by children for whom those drugs could very well be fatal. This smart pill dispenser concept tries to bring all those concerns together, offering not only a convenient tool but also a safe one for users as well as the people around them.

Designer: Anthony Chupp

The tedious work of taking medication regularly actually starts at the moment you allocate them for each day. Pill boxes and dispensers make it easier to dispense those pills and capsules, but they don’t exactly make it easy to fill them up in the first place. You might drop a pill or two on the floor in the process or, worse, drop them in the wrong compartment, forcing you to lose time trying to double-check and correct that mistake. We’re still a few steps away from a completely automated process that segregates and distributes those pills without human intervention, so any aid toward this part of the process will be significant, even if it still involves manually dropping in pills.

That’s the kind of help that the Cadence concept design offers, using a pharmacy-grade pill sorting plate that makes it easier to put pills where they belong. The specially-designed tray only has an opening for a single day so you don’t accidentally drop medicine inside compartments that have already been filled up. You can also just pour your pills on the tray and then use the built-in spatula to move the exact kind and number toward the opening.

The smart pill dispenser has 30 slots arranged like spokes around a wheel. When it’s time to dispense the day’s dosage, it releases the pills down a dropper shaped to guide the pieces into a cup or glass for collection. And then it turns the wheel so that tomorrow’s pills will be ready for the next round. The button to dispense the pills for the day is located at the top, out of the reach of kids, while locks prevent those same children from accidentally getting into the dispenser itself and scattering its contents.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a smart pill dispenser if it didn’t have any hi-tech features. When connected to a mobile device, Cadence will be able to keep track of your intake, calculating how many doses you have left or how many you’ve missed in that month. The dispenser itself has a small digital clock in the corner to take note of the time, and an LED light strip around the box that gently catches your attention when it comes time to take your medicine. Cadence isn’t exactly a sophisticated smart device, but it’s this balance of digital and analog methods that actually makes the design concept even more effective.

Smart device reminds you to take your meds when you have to

When I was diagnosed with a certain condition a couple of years ago, it also comes with the tedious (and expensive) “habit” of drinking all kinds of medication. While in my head I know I have to drink these meds at certain times of the day, there are still a lot of times that I actually forget. Sure, we can always add reminders on our phones but sometimes we just snooze those reminders. Or that may just be me. But in reality, people still need all kinds of reminders to take their meds.

Designer: Rume Studio

Ownum Pod is a concept for a device that may be the first one with a smart reminder for medication. This isn’t just an app that can give you notifications when it’s time to take your meds. It’s actually a smart device where you can put your medicine bottle in it and then configure the app to give you reminders when to take it. There is a precision scale inside the device so it knows whether or not you took the correct dosage of your pills or tablets.

The pod itself looks like a smartphone or device charger with a space in the middle to put the medicine bottle. It probably has a standard bottle where you can just store your respective medicine in. And if you’re like me that takes several different meds, you can interconnect multiple pods with just one power cable / charging connection. It has a rubber base and is also modular so you can place double or multiple pods together.

The UI and function seems pretty simple based on the product renders, although there wasn’t much explanation or visuals of the connected app. I don’t know if something like this can help discipline someone like me into taking their meds regularly. But having an option like this may be helpful.

The Speakerbuds design is by Alain Berteau—the same person who created the Nano Garden. Berteau, who is also an architect and professor, has been recognized for his work that marries simplicity and functional innovation.

Lexon Mano Design Details

Lexon has also introduced the Mano-LH79, which is an automatic hand gel dispenser. We finally see nicely designed dispensers from the usual, standard designs. We never imagined we would need dispensers to be beautiful, but the pandemic hit, and the creatives are dying to see and use something more attractive.

The Mano-LH79 is a design by Andrea Quaglio and Manuela Simonelli. If you may remember, Quaglio Simonelli also designed something for Lexon before–the Lexon Oblio Wireless Charger. The new hand gel dispenser features automatic hand detection that helps kill 99.9% of bacteria. There is an LED light, adjustable pump flow, rechargeable battery, and a USB-C port. The LED ring comes with adjustable brightness so you can set the mood.

Aliya Hand Sanitiser Dispenser allows fast and automatic hygiene

The pandemic has definitely presented a lot of unique challenges. It has been two years since the dreaded virus started to affect the whole world. As a result, many people have formed habits like wearing facemasks, frequent handwashing, and for some, using alcohol or hand sanitizer.

Those habits may probably be part of our lives for a while and even after the pandemic. However, when it comes to hand sanitization, innovations have been introduced in ways we never imagined they would. One perfect example is the award-winning Aliya from Valentino Bianchi Studios. It’s a fully automatic bentwood sanitizer dispenser inspired by the Asian Elephant.

Designer: Valentino Bianchi

Aliya Hand Sanitiser Dispenser Usage

The Aliya can be a new staple in your life. Since your daily routine won’t be complete without hand sanitation, you may want to get something fun, quirky, and useful. This special hand sanitizer dispensing unit is aesthetically pleasing. It can be another conversation starter because of its unique design and purpose.

The fully automatic liquid hand sanitizer dispenser can be mounted on the wall. You can also place it on a table or stool in your living room for easy access. It’s a masterpiece that design enthusiasts like you and me will appreciate. The Aliya uses seasoned natural softwood bent to give the elephant trunk shape. The alcohol or sanitizer comes out of the “trunk” part after being stored inside the “belly.”

Aliya Hand Sanitiser Dispenser Where to Buy

Valentino Bianchi’s Aliya makes hand cleansing a delightful experience. It has become a chore, but there are ways to make things interesting. The hand sanitizer dispensing unit is a masterpiece you’d want to show off to family, friends, and guests. Doing things in style should be the norm now, so life will be a bit better and brighter.

The Aliya dispenses alcohol or hand sanitizer with a single button press. The trunk is where the sanitizer comes out, from the belly where the liquid material is contained. This thing is sustainable as it is made from old, upcycled materials. The result is a creative reuse of wood into something that is useful, functional, and beautiful at the same time.

Aliya Hand Sanitiser Dispenser Details

The Aliya features a light that turns white while in operation. It turns red when the bottle is empty. There are hangers within the aluminum frame for proper weight distribution. There’s also enough space to conceal or wall-mount the unit. The designer used bentwood curvature, as well as, an aluminum skeleton for additional strength. Inside, a reused refill bottle is found, while the interior lining boasts a great-looking finish.

Engineer Builds Hands-Free Oreo and Milk Dispensers

Are you hungry for some milk and cookies? You could trudge all the way to the kitchen cabinet and grab some Oreos, then open the fridge to grab a bottle of milk, but that would be way too much work. Why can’t we just walk up to the wall and be fed milk and cookies without any effort at all? Well, now we can, thanks to the work of Emiel, aka The Practical Engineer.

In the interest of progress, Emiel built himself a pair of wall-mounted dispensers which can feed him Oreos and milk without the need for hands. He simply walks up to each lever, pushes down with his neck, and out pops a snack from one machine, and a stream of milk from the other. The cookie dispenser is powered by a spring, while the milk dispenser actually has a pump built into it.

He built the dispensers using a combination of off-the-shelf and 3D printed parts, and you can build your own with the instructions and template files he’s selling on his website for just €5.95 (or about $6.50 USD). While I can get behind the Oreo dispenser, I’m afraid that milk dispenser would be pretty impractical to keep clean – and without refrigeration, the milk won’t last long.

A new dispensing experience

super_s_purifier_1

Most water purifiers focus on technology, and a form that complements it, while looking advanced and fresh. The Super S water purifier does that, but also focuses on the interaction one has with the purifier. Not many people focus on this interaction because their prime concern is to get fresh purified water. However, a product with a good experience goes miles in becoming iconic, and setting standards for the society (look at the iPod or the Nest).

The Super S comes with a back-lit dispenser button that tells you what you need to know about the water by shining in four different colors. Blue and red for cold and hot water respectively, green for purified water, and orange for baby-safe water (which is temperature regulated, contains more minerals, etc.) The purifier even features a dispenser button for children, located on the lower side of the device, so that kids can easily access it. Clever, don’t you think?

Want, Need, Now: Water Draining Soap Holder

Water Draining Soap Holder

Looking for a way to increase the useful life of that bar of soap? Not that it’s a big deal or anything, but goopy soap is a huge pet peeve. Aside from, well, wasting good soap, it also makes washing your hands a difficult process. Unfortunately, it doesn’t make sense to dry the bar after every use (can you even imagine doing that?)

But here’s a bit of good news: a soap holder which does just that for you exists. The Water Draining Soap Holder basically drains away the excess water from the soap so it doesn’t slowly melt away in the holder.

One first world problem, solved. It’s available online for $5.25.

Synek Draft System Lets You Keep Your Favorite Draft Beer at Home

In many towns around the country, there are craft brewers that make their own beer. If you have a favorite, or like one of the common beers more when it comes out of a draft tap than a can, the Synek Draft System is for you. This device is your own personal draft dispenser for beer.

synek 620x348magnify

Rather than requiring kegs or pre-packaged beer, it’s designed to use vacuum-sealed bags that hold your favorite beer taken from a tap or keg. This lets you dispense a much wider variety of beers than kegerators. The Synek device keeps the beer chilled perfectly and fresh for 30 days at a time, according to the team behind the product on Kickstarter. The bags are interchangeable and keep beer fresh and carbonated even when they are outside the cooler device.

If funded, the Synek system will ship in April 2015. The project is seeking $250,000 to come to market, and is well on its way towards its goal. You can pre-order one of these devices for a pledge of at least $349(USD).
