Futuristic indoor pot concept turns your plant into a virtual pet

We all know that plants are living things, but we also often just treat them as objects simply because they don’t behave like animals and humans. It’s almost hard for us to wrap our heads around the fact that the mostly stationary creatures in pots are alive until they show signs of withering and dying. We’d probably have a completely different attitude if those plants started to show expressions or visibly react to changes in the environment and human interaction. That’s the kind of paradigm shift that this smart plant pot concept is trying to develop by creating a holographic representation of the plant that makes you feel like you’re taking care of a pet instead of just a succulent.

Plants are like pets with very stoic personalities. They don’t immediately react to the way you take care of them but the effects reveal themselves sooner or later, whether they’re good or bad. The delayed feedback might sometimes make us also slow to respond, sometimes leading to a detached and impersonal relationship that could lead to the plant’s untimely demise. Of course, we could just use one of those smart, self-watering planters, but that widens the gap even further.

Planpet is a smart plant pot concept that tries to create a more personal connection between humans and plants by giving the plant a face and changing the way we see it. There’s a glass cube standing on one end of the box-shaped pot, right beside where the actual hole for the plant is. This cube isn’t just some extraneous embellishment, however, and is actually a holographic display that shows a miniature 3D representation of the plant with one big difference: it actually has an expressive face.

The idea is that the user will select a virtual character that best resembles the type of plant being put in the pot. But more than just a passive face, this virtual plant will change its facial expressions based on real-time soil and environment analysis. It will react when you give it enough light, when you water it, or even when forget to take care of it.

Planpet is pretty much like Tamagotchi for plants but with more significant consequences in the real world. Rather than waiting for the plant to dry up and die before you get a clue, seeing the expressions the “plant pet” makes gives more immediate feedback and warnings when things aren’t going well for the plant. It still won’t be able to dynamically respond to your actions or commands unless you add a pinch of AI, but just having a face that can express some emotions is enough to really make the plant feel more alive, driving home the responsibility of raising a plant just as you would a dog or a cat.

The smart flower system with climate control automatically helps grow plants sans human involvement

Arguably, greens inside the house spread healthy, positive vibes to relax the body and mind. But caring for these plants inside the house is not everyone’s piece of cake. Some people try very hard but to no avail. This is where smart planters step in. Using high-tech monitoring and growing techniques – with minimum human effort – these planters can water, care for the soil, and automatically adjust the environment to intensify plant growth.

Smart planters are available dime a dozen. While some options rely on artificial light to help grow greens in shadier parts of the house, there are others that keep the plants happy and healthy autonomously. In the already crowded, but high-demand segment, designer Evgeniya Burmistrova has introduced a smart flower system with climate control that takes care of the plants independently and leaves you with a green, inviting environment at home.

Designer: Evgeniya Burmistrova

This smart planter can monitor the condition of the air, soil and the plant to ensure it receives the right amount of water and light to grow healthier. Designed with the working population in mind (who have less time to care for their plants, but love to have them in their indoors), the plant pot can artificially control humidity, air temperature, and more to ensure plants do not die during the user’s long absence. This endeavor can be further beneficial for the users, who can through a mobile app, control, monitor and see the plant’s performance from anywhere.

This flower system comprises three elements: a pair of smart flower pots and a stand. While all components are designed to work independently, they are best used together, with the two pots hanging from the stand. The stand is as versatile as the planters; it is usable in both vertical and horizontal orientations and can rotate 360-degrees. The pots and the stand all have their own LED backlight that works as the light source to provide natural light for Photosynthesis.

This means, no matter the type of plant you’ve got, this smart flower system will take best care of it even when you can’t. A planter like this is bound to look good at home and make indoor gardening pleasurable for all (irrespective of an individual’s time or knowledge).

This minimal planter + table lamp design is the modern day desk accessory for every millennial home!

Living in a confined apartment but you want to capitalize on your longtime dream of growing edibles and plants. Don’t let the lack of outside space pull you back. You can grow the herbs, veggies and greens, well inside the confines of your home. Of course, there are challenges in nurturing an indoor garden. Your plants will need the right amount of sunlight to grow since light triggers photosynthesis that plants turn into energy to grow. But how do you ensure ideal sunlight for growing plants indoors, especially during the winter months for instance? This is where you’ll have to weigh your options and a device like the LUMISO will fit the bill.

We know abundant sunlight is essential to assist the healthy growth of indoor plants. However, the key to successful gardening is to know which type of plant requires how much light to thrive, and what part of the house has that kind of sunlight. Or maybe you can introduce the LUMISO to your home, which comes with grow-lights that offer an exclusive light spectrum giving your plants the right amount of solar and ultraviolet rays they need to thrive.

Thankfully also, the LUMISO is not a mundane planter. It can sit beautifully on the desk and function as a table lamp as well as emitting cool and warm light that replicates the natural solar spectrum. The flower pot and lamp has a button in the base which is used to turn on the grow-light and it comes with replaceable blubs so they can be easily replaced at the end of life. So, if you are now willing to have a garden for your culinary herbs and little plants with additional light on your work desk, the LUMISO is a befitting device to let you do both.

TMNT Flower Pots: Heroes in Your Herb Garden

While I usually associate the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with unhealthy food like pizza, it turns out the turtles can also be used to encourage healthy eating. Assuming, that is, that you plant some delicious edible plants and herbs in these TMNT flower pots and don’t use them to serve slices of cold pizza.

They’re handpainted by artist John Moriarty, and 50 bucks buys you the complete set of four pots, including Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michaelangelo. And if you don’t have a green thumb, you could always use these for storing pens, pencils, action figures, katanas or other whatnots.

Tiled Vespa Flower Pot Gives Plants a Ride to Nowhere

In general, it’s pretty hard to find a flower pot that stands out from the crowd. They all look the same to me. You can either go to Home Depot and get one like everyone else has, or if you happen to have a dead Vespa lying around you could always put some tiles on it and put a plant in it. Yeah, this is a much cooler flower pot than most.

tiled vespa

It’s a great idea and a Vespa covered in tiles looks pretty awesome. It’s a work of art that is also functional, though no longer as a bike. Too bad they can’t take it on the road. It doesn’t run anymore. That’s why the people at Hotel Enfrente Arte took this ’55 Vespa, and gave it a classy makeover.

It would be awesome to see a tiled Vespa like this on the road though, plant or no plant.
