The XGIMI Aladdin is the iPhone of smart projectors…

It’s a Smart Projector, a 360° Harman Kardon Speaker, and also a Ceiling Lamp.

Far be it for me to throw an iPhone analogy willy-nilly, but when Steve Jobs took the stage to reveal his breakthrough device, he used a similar analogy. The iPhone was touted as three great things (a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a Phone, and an Internet communications device)… but in one small handheld package. XGIMI’s Aladdin, which was announced at CES 2024, has a similar back story. Disguised to look like a ceiling lamp, the Aladdin is, in fact, a 1080p short-throw projector capable of outputting a screen as large as 100 inches, with a more-than-capable 2.1-channel 360° Harman Kardon speaker built into its rather compact ceiling-mounted design.

Designer: XGIMI

Foraying into a new format after dabbling with compact projectors and UST behemoths, the Aladdin explores an entirely new design template for XGIMI – putting a projector into a ceiling light fixture. It addresses the perennial problems of traditional projectors – bulkiness, screen blockage, and glare – with an innovative approach. By integrating a projector into a ceiling light fixture, XGIMI offers a solution that is both space-efficient and aesthetically pleasing. Imagine having a cinematic experience of up to 100 inches, projected directly from your ceiling, without sacrificing any floor space. The added benefit of it being a short-throw projector with a 0.7:1 throw ratio means that it can easily fit into small rooms, making it a perfect addition to a bedroom.

The Aladdin is a fixed-position short-throw projector, capable of casting a 1080p image that spans 100 inches, all from a mere 5.98 feet away from the projecting surface. The strategic positioning not only provides an immersive viewing experience but also prioritizes user safety by preventing direct light exposure. Moreover, once installed, the image can be adjusted and tweaked to cater to the size of your room, accounting for direction, angle, focus, and keystone.

The auditory experience with Aladdin is equally impressive. The integrated 360-degree speaker by Harman Kardon, featuring a 2.1-channel sound system, creates an immersive audio environment. This system ensures that sound seems to emanate from the screen itself, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

In terms of design, Aladdin mirrors the simplicity of installing a standard ceiling light, making it a practical choice for homes. The projector also goes beyond traditional usage, offering interactive experiences like dynamic wallpapers, interactive children’s books, and ambient sounds, adding a unique touch to everyday moments. Speaking of unique touch, the Aladdin operates entirely touch-free and without a remote, relying on voice commands that make it a breeze to operate.

Scheduled to launch in Japan in June 2024 and priced at under $1000 USD, the Aladdin is poised to make a significant impact in the market. This pricing strategy positions the XGIMI Aladdin as an accessible option for a wide range of consumers.

Modern Ceiling Lights Dancing Like Ribbons To Match Modern Spaces

Lighting plays a vital role in setting the ambiance of a space. Interior designers understand the significance of playing around with lighting to create the desired atmosphere. In the realm of modern interior design, a lighting concept called “The Fellas” has emerged, offering clean and minimalistic solutions that complement contemporary living styles. With its unique design and innovative features, The Fellas breaks away from conventional ceiling lights, providing users with a creative and attractive lighting solution.

Designers: Wenkai Li and Dan Yu of 0-1 Design Studio

The Fellas draws inspiration from ribbons and circular forms, resulting in a visually striking design. The linear material used in this lighting concept is flexible, akin to ribbons, and mimics the motion of a ribbon being swung in a circular fashion. The resulting form is highly aesthetic and textured, featuring a suspended light source design that seamlessly blends into public spaces as both a ceiling light and a wall light.

What sets The Fellas apart is its utilization of flexible material-made light source substrates and linear light sources. This innovative approach not only enhances energy efficiency but also simulates a uniform, soft, and glare-free 360° lighting effect similar to the solar spectrum. Moreover, The Fellas prioritizes the health of its users, incorporating an anti-blue light source that effectively protects eye health. Its color rendering, which closely mimics natural light, and wide-area light distribution contribute to creating a pleasant and inviting atmosphere.

Recognizing the significant impact of lighting on ambiance, The Fellas allows users to modify their lighting according to personal preferences. The concept can be interconnected with a scene light control system, which employs artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically adjust the color temperature and lighting mode based on different living scenes. Additionally, users have the flexibility to customize the lighting settings through a dedicated mobile application. This versatility enables users to adapt the lighting to various environments and atmospheres, enhancing the artistic appeal of any space.

The Fellas is designed for convenience and adaptability. Its one-piece molding process ensures easy installation, while the body of the lighting fixture can be adjusted by 8° after assembly. This flexibility allows for seamless integration into diverse architectural settings and provides users with greater control over the lighting effects in their spaces.

Lighting is an essential element in interior design, and The Fellas offers a modern lighting concept that excels in both form and functionality. Its distinctive design inspired by ribbons and circular forms, combined with innovative lighting technology, creates a visually captivating and harmonious lighting experience. With its customizable features and adaptability, The Fellas empowers users to transform their spaces into personalized, inviting, and artful environments.

As we age, our ability to balance and manage everyday tasks can become more challenging. Simple activities that were once effortless can require more effort and the risk of accidents and loss of control increases. For elderly individuals, having support and the knowledge that help is readily available is invaluable. However, in today’s modern world, many elderly people live alone or without immediate assistance. This is where Nobi comes in—a remarkable AI-driven smart lamp that detects, predicts, and prevents incidents, providing a sense of safety and security for the elderly.

Nobi understands the unique needs of the elderly and empowers them to live safe, dignified, and happy lives. Elderly individuals often struggle with adapting to new technologies, finding them complex and overwhelming. As younger generations, we have become de facto teachers for our grandparents in the realm of technology. From teaching them how to make phone calls and take pictures to navigate social media, we’ve witnessed their challenges. Nobi, however, breaks the barriers by encouraging the adoption of high-tech care technology that is perceived as difficult to use and intrusive. It not only fulfills their needs but also fosters a genuine desire to embrace them.

Nobi goes beyond its practical functions and seamlessly integrates into any interior with its stylish design. It resembles a conventional lamp rather than a piece of care technology, ensuring it doesn’t disrupt the aesthetics of the living space. Nobi’s discreet presence allows the elderly to feel comfortable and secure without drawing attention to their vulnerabilities.

Like a guardian angel, Nobi diligently stands to watch, providing continuous support and care. Its advanced AI technology enables it to operate around the clock, preventing falls and promptly alerting caregivers in the event of declining health. Nobi is a revolutionary AI-driven smart lamp that has redefined care technology for the elderly. By seamlessly blending into the living environment, Nobi offers a sense of safety and security without compromising on style. Pendant lamp sees light bulb enveloped by plexiglass

I’m not very particular when it comes to choosing lights for my house and most of the time, they’re there already anyway. As long as it gives me illumination in places where I need it, I’m okay with it. But if given the chance to choose light fixtures for my own, I’d like to have some of them to be pretty decorative as well. There are a lot of product concepts for lamps and lights are pretty interesting if they do become available as actual products you can purchase.

Designer: Deniz Aktay

The Nested pendant lamp is a pretty interesting design that makes it look like the light is “captured” inside a fixture. The concept is simple enough: put a light bulb in between two plexiglass sheets. Make it a semi-transparent kind of glass to give it even more of a different kind of look as compared to your ordinary light fixtures. The choice of materials for the design not only holds the bulb in position but it also diffuses the light that comes out so it doesn’t become too bright or blinding.

The product renders show two colors available: green and brown. These may be the best light colors to have on semi-transparent plexiglass. The light bulb is enveloped between the two sheets but part of the glass is molded to the bulb so it doesn’t look flat. You can hang it onto the ceiling and the fixtures match the color and design of the pendant lamp as well. You can have several of the lamps together for a chandelier-type design.

This sliding ceiling lamp has got us ‘hooked’ on to its flexible, playful, modular design!

Designer Huisu Jo was observings people’s behavior in ‘Dongmyo’ which is a traditional Korean market where everything is used as the ‘most convenient way’. He saw people being resourceful with even scraps and was inspired by the fact that hangers are used as the easiest way to display items. Even in local Indian markets, hangers are used to create a makeshift shelf for the items and sometimes even used to hang lights to show the items laid out below when it is dark. Hook is a lamp that is inspired by these makeshift hacks and has been designed to let users adjust the position of the light according to their needs.

Lights are usually fixed but Hook brings that flexibility to the appliance so it can be aligned with our lifestyle. For example, I want to read in my nook but it is not right under the ceiling light so I have to buy another light or change my reading corner – this may not be convenient in small spaces or for my pocket. But with Hook, I can just slide the light towards my corner and back when I am done. It keeps the floor space free while adding a dynamic element to the otherwise monotonous and boring ceiling lights.

Hook’s aesthetic is minimal and modern. It could have been black and white for a sleek look but I love the pastel blue and bright orange – it adds a pop of color without being too bold and turns the light into a functional accent piece in your home. The clever design also lets you have 2-3 hook lamps so you can disperse or concentrate the light. Simply hook the lamp on to the bar and slide it as per your space and your situation. Hook is modular, flexible, and playful – a refreshing take on hanging ceiling lights!
