Wall-mounted drawers offer storage that leaves your floor clear and free

Storage containers are inescapable facts of life, especially in this day and age where we collect so many material possessions. These vessels can range from plastic boxes to wooden furniture like shelves and cabinets, all of which trade floor space for that storage capacity. Unfortunately, floor space is also becoming a luxury these days, and we can’t simply expand the area in proportion to our growing storage needs. We need to be smarter about the way we use storage and what we use for storage, and no, stacking them up to the ceiling isn’t a viable solution nor a safe one. These drawers, in contrast, do offer a better alternative by taking advantage of the free space that we have found on our walls.

Designers: Camille Paillard and Romain Voulet

Storage boxes are a common sight in many households. They’re simple, convenient, and often stackable. They also take up precious floor space, and stacking them so high can become a safety hazard if left unchecked. Ideally, we’d “Marie Kondo” our excess possessions, but we’ll always still end up with stuff we can’t simply throw out. We obviously need more storage, but we also don’t have more floor space to use. What we do have, however, is plenty of free wall space that isn’t even taken up by decorations.

The KGT Wall Units evolved from metal storage boxes that could be individually stacked just like any conventional storage box. As the name implies, these boxes are mounted on a wall rather than lying on the floor. In this manner, they actually behave more like drawers rather than boxes, but the function and purpose are the same: to hide your possessions from view.

Of course, these can’t be stacked like normal boxes because they have to be screwed to a wall for stability. In fact, each unit has a fixed number of drawers, either one, three, or six in a vertical arrangement. There is one other variant where the drawers line up side-by-side, creating a long horizontal row instead. Of course, there’s no limitation on how you combine those units and how many you use. You could even have a whole stack of three six-unit drawers for a total of 18, or 18 individual drawers, presuming you have enough vertical clearance.

More than just their practical utility, however, these wall-mounted drawers add aesthetic value to a space, something ordinary stacked boxes don’t often provide. The gaps between each drawer bring some negative space that visually balances the unit, and the top of each unit becomes yet another space to utilize for things you want people to see. With a powder-coated finish, these seemingly floating drawers provide more than just smart storage but also visual interest to your space, all without cluttering your floor even further.

This doodle interactive wall creates fun times for kids and adults as well

I’m not a parent myself but with a lot of my friends having their progeny, I am aware of the challenges of raising kids, especially during the pandemic and even in this digital age. Some common problems include kids stuck on their gadgets, not having enough interaction with other kids, etc. Oh, and those that are not in front of their screens are constantly writing or drawing on anything except paper, which more often than not is the walls of their house. What if all of these things can be solved with one device?

Designer: Hyungwoo Lee

This concept for a product called Doodle aims to solve some of these pain points faced by parents when raising young kids. The design and the idea for the device is of course inspired by all the doodles on the wall that young parents have most likely experienced. The device looks like a smart speaker except it is huge and is mounted on the wall. This way, instead of writing and drawing on the wall, they can interact with the fabric surface of the device and enjoy some of the interactive activities included in the concept.

The soft fabric display lets kids have a tactile interaction with the “screen” while they draw, write, touch, and interact with other kids who are also using the same device. There are LED lights under the surface so that it follows the fingers of the kid doodling on the Doodle. There are also times when they can press and squeeze the surface depending on the activity they want to do, like pop the balloons or squeeze to say hello or let their drawings “fly”.

The concept also takes into consideration that kids grow tall fast. It has a height recognition sensor that will adjust depending on the height of the kid that’s using the device. It’s a pretty interesting concept for a device for children and the design is simple enough to blend into your wall. The design will be enhanced by the doodles and artwork that the young ones will create. Having something like this can help take them away from screens for a little while and also interact with other users as well.

Minimalist wall-mounted shoe rack helps store footwear while decluttering your space

If you don’t have space for a shoe rack and you cringe at the idea of just leaving your shoes in a cluttered heap inside or outside your house, Avril has you sorted. No, not the Canadian rock singer, the wall-mounted shoe-rack. Designed to uplift your space by uplifting your shoes, the Avril shoe rack by Ylisse sits on your wall, providing a nice angled shelf to dock your shoes when not worn. Unlike conventional racks with horizontal shelves, the Avril’s angled design sits closer to the wall and occupies less real estate space, making it perfect for small homes, houses with narrow entrances, and even hotel rooms. Plus, the shoes are easy to access at all times, giving Avril the upper hand over your floor-based shoe rack that requires you to hunch over to find your shoes!

“We bought a house, and despite the space we were gaining, the entrance hall was still filled with shoes”, said Avril’s designer, Hubert Therrien. “Jogging shoes, walking shoes, work shoes… all of them were cluttering up the doorway and piling up really quickly.” The idea of coming home to a living room or doorway cluttered with piles of shoes didn’t appeal to Therrien (and why should it?!), so he designed the Avril as a much more elegant, space-saving, minimalist, and easy-to-maintain alternative.

Simply put, the Avril is a powder-coated sheet metal rack that mounts onto any wall. Designed at a precise angle, the rack just protrudes a mere 5.1 inches from the wall, but holds at least 3 pairs of shoes per shelf. Mounting is rather easy, and maintaining the rack is simple too. Just place your shoes into the rack’s angled shelf when you need to store them… and if the shelf ever gets dirty over time (and it probably will), simply unhook it off the wall and wipe it down or rinse it under a gardening hose before drying it and mounting it back!

The Avril Shoe Rack comes in textured black or matte white finishes, and is designed to last for years!

This modular wall storage concept is perfect for tiny homes

Thanks to the power of magnets, a blank wall can become a safe haven for all your things if you’ve already run out of places to store them.

The price of housing and living spaces has gone up considerably in the past decades, resulting in people trying to make do with more cramped accommodations. Conversely, the surge of interest in tiny homes has also spurred some creative thinking in new storage solutions with minimal footprints. In both these cases, traditional products like containers and cabinets just don’t cut it. Fortunately, a few new designs have started appearing lately, including one that lets you use the wall for something more functional and less decorative but still aesthetic.

Designer: Francesco Brunetti

Typical containers store items in a messy way that potentially damages these objects, while cabinets don’t provide quick access or visibility to the things they hide inside. More importantly, these solutions often take up floor space which is already in short supply in small living quarters, even one to two-room apartments. That’s why some have considered unconventional spaces like stairs and walls as the next frontier in storage solutions, but few offer the same flexibility as shelves and drawers.

That’s where Brunetti’s Wall-it concept comes in, a storage solution that is can also be a decorative wall piece. Rather than limiting what you can hang on your wall to the manufacturer’s specifications, Wall-it lets owners decide where and how to hold different kinds of objects. This modular capability is thanks to the power of strong magnets that not only let you decide which containers to attach but also which boards to use.

This is also where the aesthetic and decorative aspect of Wall-it comes in. The concept has room for over a dozen different accessories that can be used for different kinds of objects, like a hook for headphones and a box for smartphones. Users can mix and match not only the types of containers themselves but also the colors of the board and the accessories. You can choose to match their colors with the rest of the room or make them stand out visually with different hues.

There’s also a sustainable element to Wall-it, thanks to the materials that have been chosen for this concept. Bio-based PLA thermoplastic is significantly more recyclable than regular plastic, and the epoxy used to join the magnets with PLA can be dissolved by acidic solutions. Wall-it, therefore, presents a family of storage solutions that not only saves space but also saves the environment in the long run.

The writing desk that sort of looks like a low-key minimalist artpiece

The Pill Writing Desk really challenges a lot of fundamental notions of desk-design, if it were. With an unusual shape that’s eye-catching when closed and functional when open, the Pill manages to behave like furniture but look a little like minimalist art. The circular desk comes firmly wall-mounted, which makes it comparable to a wall-hung painting rather than a 4-legged floor-resting desk.

The desk’s pill-inspired design is divided into three units. The upper semicircle serves as a writing space with enough storage for your belongings (including your laptop), while the lower quadrants act as a pair of cabinets for other items you may need to store.

Wall Outlet Mounted Space Heater

wall outlet space heater
It’s the space heater that doesn’t take up a lot of space. In fact it doesn’t take up any floor space at all. The Wall Outlet Space Heater mounts directly into any three pronged (grounded) AC outlet. The heater sits flush against the wall and heats up rooms up to 250 square feet. Great for small unheated rooms like bathrooms, enclosed porches, laundry rooms, or even walk-in closets. The two fan-speed heater can sit under your desk at your office and discretely heat up your area.

The heater is 400 watts and had a digital thermostat so you can set it to the exact temperature you want (between 60 and 90 degrees). Most other space heaters simply give you a high or low setting. This is more precise. Not to mention compact. It even has a timer so you can set it to turn on automatically, ensuring a warm room before you even get there. An automatic cut-off stops it from overheating. It measures just 6.5″ H x 3.75″ W x 5″ D and weighs less than 2 pounds so it’s great for traveling as well.

What we like about this is that it’s not a hook, so that when you take your key out of your lock you can insert it right into this key holder without having to maneuver your keyring around. A magnet inside helps keep the key secured. It hangs your keys in a really cute style and you could line a few up for a nice arrangement or even paint it maybe.
