EDITOR'S QUOTE:

Beatbot AquaSense Pro redefines pool cleaning with AI, efficient floor-to-surface cleaning, and water clarification, becoming a dream for pool owners.

Swimming pool cleaners have been around for a long time, but those available from Leslie’s Pool Supply or even the robotic ones on Amazon lack technological innovation, making them no better than traditional pool cleaners. These traditional pool cleaners, often known as suction-side or pressure-side cleaners, operate more simply than their robotic counterparts. They’re costly and need to be connected to a hose that hooks up to the pool’s existing filtration system.

This review explores why smart robotic pool cleaners, particularly the Beatbot AquaSense Pro, are the future. As a spoiler, Yanko Design named it one of the best consumer products at CES 2024.

Designer: Beatbot

Aesthetics

The Beatbot AquaSense Pro is the world’s first all-in-one intelligent pool-cleaning robot. It’s cordless and cleans the floor, waterline, and surface. It also features a water clarification function. With 20 onboard sensors, nine powerful motors, a dedicated Quad-Core 1.8 GHz processor, and an AI algorithm powered by Beatbot OS, it’s a dream come true for pool owners.

The “holistic” view of this robotic pool cleaner is impressive, given its numerous industry-first innovations. Let’s start with its simulated flight propulsion design. No other pool cleaner on the market can float to the surface and clean it intelligently.

This design draws inspiration from nature, specifically from the feeding mechanism of blue or humpback whales. These whales use a unique mechanism called filter feeding to consume large quantities of small prey, such as fish and tiny sea creatures. They do this by opening their mouths wide to gulp in a massive amount of water, then pushing the water out through their baleen plates with their tongues.

The AquaSense Pro robotic pool cleaner works similarly. It has a front flap and uses two propeller motors and two floating chamber motors to glide and suck in debris, leaves, bugs, and other pool pollutants. Its unique AquaGlide™ Simulated Flight Propulsion Design System enables it to move on water. Its top suction mouth and dust-rolling brush capture debris, preventing them from sinking. This feature alone saves significant pool cleaning time. After each cleaning cycle, the results are satisfactory.

It’s important to note that in its current form, the Pro Mode only makes one pass over the surface. After cleaning an area in an S-shaped pattern on the pool floor and surface, additional debris or leaves may fall into the pool. In such cases, do not expect the device to recognize and go back to clean that area again.

Performance

Where the AquaSense Pro truly shines, literally, in every sense of the word, is another industry-first — the built-in clarifier dispenser for a cleaner-looking pool by clearing up the pool water. This process takes place while cleaning the floor. The AI algorithm determines the amount needed based on the pool size for the most efficient use of the chemical.

In terms of cleaning, this robotic swimming pool cleaner excels. I’ve had the opportunity to use it in my pool and can attest that it effectively removes both visible and invisible debris. It’s surprising to realize how dirty the pool water is when you remove and clean the two-layer filter. This filter basket captures and holds all debris, accommodating particles as tiny as 150 micrometers.

Strong suction is just one aspect. The two sets of brushes, placed at the front and back, scrub simultaneously, enhancing the cleaning power. It’s quite captivating to observe them in action. These brushes operate at different speeds and in different directions at times for precise control and extensive coverage, ensuring a thoroughly clean pool. Usually, I find myself scrubbing the sides and bottom of the swimming pool every few days. Now, that task is reliably delegated.

The CleverNav plan effectively maps out and charts the path forward for an S-shape cleaning pattern for the pool floor and surface, while the sides and waterline utilize the N-shaped cleaning pattern. It does a great job of preventing overlaps. However, I don’t mind a bit of overlap, considering my swimming pool is as old as the house, which is over 35 years old.

Beatbot informed me that future firmware updates will allow for customized cleaning modes, which could enable the robot to clean continuously for up to 9.5 hours if necessary. On average, the battery life of the robot is over 5.5 hours on a single charge, taking less than 3 hours to fully recharge from complete depletion. If the battery level falls below 15%, the robot smartly returns to its starting point and parks itself on the water surface near a wall. It then automatically expels the water from its cavities. This makes it lighter when lifting it out of the pool and prevents a lot of water from spilling out. This MemoryPark smart return to the starting point is another industry first.

Ergonomics

I appreciate that, unlike other robotic pool cleaners, I don’t need to manually turn this one on or off for charging or use. It begins charging as soon as I place it on the charger, regardless of whether it’s on or off. After removing it from the base charger, it takes only 3 seconds to calibrate on a level surface before it’s ready to clean.

The buttons are designed and arranged intuitively. From left to right, they include quick clean mode, standard mode, power on/off, pro mode, and eco mode. My preference is the pro mode as it cleans the entire pool, encompassing the bottom, sides, water line, and surface. The Quick mode cleans the floor once, while the Standard mode also cleans the floor, walls, and waterline once. The ECO mode cleans the floor once every other day. A Custom mode, set to be available later through an over-the-air update, will allow for personalized cleaning settings.

Verdict

Beatbot has impressively incorporated a vast amount of technology and innovation into the AquaSense Pro. It’s hard to comprehend the 131 patents it holds, including 51 inventions and 20 sensors measuring water pressure, ultrasonic sensors, hall sensors, and temperature and humidity sensors. It even includes IMU and electrical current sensors to ensure smooth operation. Thanks to its nine motors, this robot can climb steps, clean them, and then proceed. The brushless main water pump motor at the robot’s core is a powerhouse. It’s akin to a 16-cylinder engine on a Bugatti arranged in a unique W configuration, ready for action every time water oozes out. Collectively, the drive-wheel motors, floating chamber peristaltic pump, surface propeller, stepping motor, and reagent pump motor make the AquaSense Pro one of the best swimming pool cleaners I’ve used in the past two decades. If you’re looking for a new cordless, hassle-free robotic cleaner, this will be the last one you’ll need to invest in.

Revolutionary coffee machine lets you make coffee exactly the way you want it

There might be jokes about being the golden brown fuel that runs the world, but coffee really has a special place in many people’s daily routines. Of course, that doesn’t mean everyone enjoys coffee in exactly the same way. There are people who are fine with quick instant coffee, much to the horror of connoisseurs, as long as they get their caffeine fix. Others, however, have developed very particular requirements to satisfy their taste buds as well. Different people also like different types of coffee, from espressos to drips to hot to cold, and sometimes even the same person likes different brews depending on their mood. It’s difficult to find one machine that can deliver all of those, especially for home use, but that’s exactly the kind of ground-breaking innovation that this revolutionary coffee machine offers, giving users full control over the brewing process so that they can have the coffee they want the way they want it.

KUKU Maker uses centrifugal force to generate pressure, which makes it possible to maintain a stable extraction pressure throughout the extraction process, regardless of the state of other parameters.

Baristas make it look too easy, but there’s actually a science and an art to brewing the perfect cup of joe. It’s not just the grind size that affects the way coffee tastes but also variables like water temperature, extraction pressure, and more. Your run-of-the-mill coffee machine usually only has one or a few presets for these in order to simplify the process, but that also takes out much of the fun and the power away from true-blooded coffee lovers.

You have the flexibility to use ice water or room temperature water directly for extraction, or you can employ KUKU Maker to swiftly heat room temperature water to your desired temperature before initiating the extraction process.

Enter KUKU, a genius design that lets you have consistent traditional coffee when you need it as well as easy, customized brews when you want it, all thanks to a combination of cyclic extraction and centrifugal force. That flexibility comes from KUKU’s ability to let you be in control of those variables, namely extraction pressure, temperature, time, and, of course, grind size. And best of all, you don’t need to adjust all of those when you don’t want to. For example, you can preset temperature and pressure while only adjusting the grind size to anywhere between superfine to extra course. And if you happened to select the wrong grind size, you aren’t punished but are instead rewarded with a new flavor you might have never discovered on your own.

Room Temperature Espresso

The KUKU Maker is a multifunctional coffee device that can quickly make not only cold-brew coffee but also cold-brew espresso.

Unlike other coffee machines, KUKU uses centrifugal force to generate pressure, and thanks to an inductive brushless motor and intelligent control algorithms, you can precisely define how that happens. Go from normal atmospheric pressure to high pressure or from 3000 to 7000 RPM speeds in a snap, controlling this variable to meet your preferred brew’s requirements. The temperature of the water used during extraction also has a significant impact not only on the taste of the coffee but also on the aroma, and KUKU gives you the freedom to use whatever kind of water you need. Pour crushed ice or ice water for your icy cold beverages or get room temperature water heated to your preferred levels. With electromagnetic induction heating, it takes less than a minute to heat 60ml of water for an espresso and 4 minutes for 300ml of water for an Americano.

With all these powerful features, it comes as a pleasant surprise that you don’t have to be a veteran barista to use KUKU. Your favorite type of coffee is just a single toggle switch away or, if you prefer the hands-free approach, a few taps on the KUKU mobile app. You can even download recipes from the app and try out different profiles made by coffee experts and champions. And at the end of the day, you don’t have to stress over the mess thanks to an easy cleaning process that will help keep your machine in tip-top shape with very little work. Whether your caffeine fix is a cold-brew espresso or you find joy in expertly crafted recipes, the innovative KUKU coffee machine gives you all the control you need for the perfect cup and the flexibility to experiment and discover a whole new world of flavor in every brew.

The Minimally Elegant ‘mui Board’ IoT dashboard gets upgraded at CES 2024 with Matter and ChatGPT support

At first glance, the mui Board Gen 2 appears to be nothing more than a simple wooden plank, designed to be mounted on a wall. However, this unassuming piece of timber transforms into a touch-sensitive interface for controlling various aspects of a smart home. Imagine adjusting your lighting, curtains, thermostat, and even your speakers with a simple tap on this wooden surface.

Now in its second generation after a successful run on Kickstarter back in 2022, the designers behind your smart home’s most minimally elegant accessory are back with round two. The mui Board Gen 2, which made its simultaneous debut at CES 2024 as well as Kickstarter, now comes with a few upgrades which include support for the Matter protocol, as well as integration with ChatGPT for a more innovative and intuitive smart home experience.

Designer: mui Lab

The second-generation Mui Board integrates the new Matter networking protocol, significantly broadening its compatibility with smart devices from tech giants like Apple, Google, and Amazon. This integration promises easy connectivity and enhances the Mui Board’s appeal as a universal smart home control hub.

Additionally, the Gen 2 also gets ChatGPT integration via APIs, allowing you to interact naturally with your Mui Board to create schedules, task lists, and even ask questions and get answers on the backlit wood interface.

When not in use, the Mui Board slips into sleep mode, reverting to its original wooden plank appearance. This feature underscores the company’s ethos of blending technology seamlessly into the home environment, making it a subtle yet powerful addition to any room. The Gen 2 continues to use real wood veneers to give the mui Board its unique natural appeal. While the company only showcased the mui Board in a single color, it’ll be available in ‘natural’ and ‘dark’ veneer options at the end of its Kickstarter campaign.

What truly sets the mui Board apart is its focus on “calm technology.” Japanese company mui Lab, the creators of the mui Board, aims to reduce distractions and information overload in our daily lives. By minimizing the presence of glaring screens and providing a more discreet way to interact with smart devices, they hope to maintain a balance between connectivity and tranquility at home.

Xbox Series S toaster is now a real thing that can toast your bread

You probably know a gamer or two (or more) who live and breathe playing games on their console of choice, to the point that they tend to skip things like talking to other people and even eating. There are also probably gamers who see their game graphics everywhere, even on their food. Well, this can happen literally now, at least for Xbox fans as you can now imprint the logo on your bread.

Designer: Microsoft

The Xbox Series S toaster is now available to make all your Xbox toast dreams come true. It may seem like a joke item but it’s a real product that you can buy at Walmart and you can use as you toast your loaf bread, waffle, bagel, or whatever else piece of bread that you want to have the Xbox logo on before you actually eat and consume it. It doesn’t serve any other purpose except to put that logo on your bread and for Microsoft to have that image of having fun at their own expense.

This is actually born out of the memes that populated social media sites when the Xbox Series S first came out, comparing it with, you guessed it, a toaster. It has a digital countdown timer and you can even choose the shade setting for the xbox logo to be imprinted on your bread. The design of the toaster itself is similar to the Xbox Series S so you might have to be careful or you could start playing games in your kitchen or you might put a piece of bread into your actual Xbox.

This isn’t the first time they created an actual appliance based on people making fun of their console designs. The Xbox Series X mini fridge came out previously and we wouldn’t be surprised if they will eventually lean into this and create other kitchen appliances with the Xbox branding like a microwave, cutlery, plates, and even other products not related to the kitchen or eating. But for now, enjoy having the Xbox logo on your toast as you play games while eating.

The GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker brings BBQ inside for $1,000

After an Indiegogo campaign that amassed over $800,000 in funding, GE Appliances is bringing its indoor smoker to consumers nationwide in the US ahead of CES 2024. Originally dubbed the Arden as a project of GE Appliance's "maker space and micro factory" FirstBuild, the appliance is now known as the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker. While the design has been updated to a degree, The basic idea remains the same: a larger countertop device that brings the ability to smoke foods inside the kitchen without setting off the fire alarm in your house or apartment.

With an appliance the size of a compact mini fridge, the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker uses so-called Active Smoke Filtration technology that employs a "catalyst system" to create wood smoke from pellets and combine it with an electric heating element. The airflow setup is designed to impart "maximum flavor" into a variety of foods while tight gaskets keep the smoke inside. GE Appliances says the unit is suitable for all skill levels thanks to five smoke presets. There are also six food-specific settings for popular smoked foods like brisket, ribs, pork butt, chicken wings, chicken breast and salmon. The company says the customization available on the smoker also allows users to prepare side dishes and desserts with the device.

What's more, there are some conveniences that outdoor smokers don't offer. A Smoke and Hold feature prepares foods and then keeps them at food-safe temperatures for up to 24 hours. GE Appliances says the smoker also uses a fraction of the wood pellets as outdoor grills, thanks in part to the additional heating element, and that a pellet capture system extinguishes used pellets in a water tank. Lastly, all of the racks and drip trays are dishwasher safe where those components are typically so large on outdoor smokers they need to be washed by hand.

As the name implies, there's a connected aspect to the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker. With GE Profile Connect+ app, you can adjust smoke levels and monitor the cooking process as the unit includes a food probe. The company says feature updates like guided recipes will be available in the future. This is an indoor device, but you don't have to sacrifice capacity. GE Appliances says there's enough room for three racks of baby back ribs, a brisket, up to 40 wings or a 14-pounds pork butt. Since most pork butts you'll find at grocery stores are around eight pounds or less, there's ample room for pulled pork.

Taking a look at the device on the show floor at CES 2024, the machine isn't exactly small. It still carries over a little bit of that former fridge DNA, which is how it first began as a crowdfunding project. A spokesperson added that the project's backers are receiving machines identical to the retail model, which are being shipped out to them now.

Part of GE's Profile appliance lineup, it's an understated machine, with the kind of controls you'd find on premium kitchen appliances.

Because the wood pellets’ only function is to add smokiness and not power the cooking process, only a handful of pellets are needed per smoking session. When the machine's in action, there’s a mild smokey aroma around the machine, but it dissipates a foot or two away from the machine.

Unfortunately, due to catering rules here at CES, GE wasn’t allowed to serve the brisket they were smoking during the show, so we can’t critique the quality of the end result. It certainly looked (and smelled) good.

The GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker will be available from retailers this month for $1,000.

Save Your Kitchen Space With The All-In-One Kitchen Aid That Replaces Other Kitchen Appliances

In the ever-evolving world of kitchen appliances, the demand for efficiency, versatility, and compactness has led to the creation of innovative solutions. The Hybrid Kitchen Aid emerges as a groundbreaking product that not only boasts multiutility but excels in adaptability, storage efficiency, and economical use.

Designer: Rishikesh Sonawane

This kitchen aid redefines the concept of kitchen appliances by seamlessly integrating the functions of multiple devices into one compact and adaptable machine. Inspired by the classic French press, its design allows it to execute tasks equivalent to blending, grinding, and kneading, making it an all-in-one solution for various kitchen needs.

One of its distinguishing features is the inversion of the motor placement, a deviation from traditional food processors. This unique design contributes to the adaptability of the appliance. The sliding switch empowers the user to cut direct power, enhancing safety and control during use.

The telescopic arm, a key design element, controls the lid level and ensures the attachment reaches the bottom of any vessel placed. A lock mechanism secures the telescoping arm and lid at the desired level, providing stability and ease of use. The user-friendly design allows for easy adjustment by lifting the arm head to unlock its position.

Lack of storage is a very common concern, the Hybrid Kitchen Aid addresses this by presenting a minimal and robust design where every element serves multiple functions. The ability to disassemble and adjust the appliance not only aids in storage but also contributes to its economic viability.

The product’s unique design allows it to adapt to a variety of kitchenware, reducing the need for multiple appliances. This adaptability not only enhances productivity but also minimizes the cleaning time between tasks. The suction cups secure the product onto the kitchen counter, adding to its stability during operation.

Cleanability is a critical aspect of any kitchen appliance, I always have my mom complaining about certain products that are difficult to clean and how she despises them, the Hybrid Kitchen Aid excels in this regard. The dismantleable attachments are specifically designed for thorough cleaning, addressing concerns about food particles accumulating in hard-to-reach spaces. The yellow ring and blade module, with a ceramic bearing, ensure easy disassembly and efficient cleaning.

The user interface of the Hybrid Kitchen Aid is both intuitive and aesthetically pleasing. A user flow diagram guides the user through a start-to-finish process, employing color and brightness levels to highlight errors or selections. The regulator dial, also serving as an On/Off button, allows for easy control of RPM.

In addition to its functionality, the Hybrid Kitchen Aid stands out as a statement piece in the kitchen. Its elegant design and adaptability make it not only a powerful tool but also a visually appealing addition to any culinary space.

The Hybrid Kitchen Aid transcends the boundaries of conventional kitchen appliances. With its multiutility, adaptability, storage efficiency, and cleanability, it emerges as a revolutionary solution for individuals seeking a versatile and economical kitchen aid that performs optimally in day-to-day cooking tasks.

LG CineBeam Qube 4K projector doubles as a curious design piece

Projectors have been around for almost decades, but it has only been recently that they’ve started to move out of offices and into living rooms. With the advent of home projectors, however, came the need for newer designs that make these utilitarian boxes fit with your interior design better. Some brands have indeed started to do that, but it takes more than just using glossy surfaces or wrapping the boxes with fabric-like materials. Ideally, you really have to think outside the box and adopt a design that barely looks like a typical home projector, like the new LG CineBeam Qube 4K that’s meant to look like a stylus art object when simply sitting on your table or shelf, whether or not you’re using it.

Designer: LG

Smart home projectors have started to become more aware of how they need to blend in with the rest of your furniture or home decor. Some have tried to embrace more luxurious-looking materials that make the appliances look a little more stylish, but few can escape the traditional boxy shapes that projectors come in. Admittedly, it’s not that easy to break away from this form due to technical reasons, but that doesn’t mean you have to stick to the bulky horizontal design of most projectors.

The LG CineBeam Qube 4K is an example of a design that breaks from the mould while still sticking to the norm. It’s still a rectangular box and less a cube as its name might imply, but it stands upright rather than lying low. It’s also quite tiny, compared to your run-of-the-mill laser projectors, so it can discreetly stand beside your books on a shelf and get out of the way when you don’t need it. The point, however, is that you won’t have to put it away during those periods of rest because the CineBeam Qube is designed to look great even while just standing there.

The projector has a rather industrial aesthetic, with a metallic silver chassis and a black facade where the large lens lies smack in the middle. There is an odd lever structure wrapping around the back of the box, most likely a handle that lets you pick up the projector and move it around in style. Its beauty won’t appeal to everyone, but it will at least grab people’s attention the moment they see it.

Despite its small size, the LG CineBeam Qube claims to pack quite a punch, including 4K resolution and a maximum projection size of 120 inches. The 500 ANSI lumens brightness, however, means you’ll only use it indoors in a dark room. It’s a smart projector so you’ll have access to plenty of content, both from streaming services as well as connected devices. And when you’re not using it to watch shows, you can use its image-mapping function to display images and photos that add some life to your dark space.
