Porsche Design brings back a legendary watch design with its titanium carbide Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition

Porsche Design has over 51 years of experience creating luxurious and nearly indestructible watches; its classic 38 millimeter stainless steel Military Chronograph watch gained the praise of international air forces across the world for its remarkable comfort and durability. That explains the $13,000 price tag on the new Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition watch, which is a modern reimagining of that classic chronograph.

Designer: Roland Heiler, Carsten Monnerjan (via Porsche Design)

Porsche Design noted in its official product page that this is the company’s first use of titanium carbide – an incredibly resistant material typically used to treat industrial machines – in any of its watches.  It’s not only for military pilots, though. Given Porsche Design’s legendary track record, it’s not a stretch to call the Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition an expertly-designed watch that is foolproof against normal wear and tear like scratches, making it a high ticket item for any watch collector who values impeccable craftsmanship.

The watch face is designed to be even more readable in dark environments than previous Porsche Design watch models as well, thanks to the use of blue Super-LumiNova material on the individual hands, dial, and signature instead of Tritium.

For those unfamiliar with analog chronograph watches, there’s no simple way to set timers and alarms as you would effortlessly with a digital watch, so the watch itself needs to be built well enough to juggle multiple times purely through mechanical functionality. This is something Porsche Design does particularly well; the Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition internal clock is a COSC-certified Porsche Design-caliber WERK 01.240, which is described as ensuring “maximum precision” with a flyback function that smoothly starts, stops, and resets time measurements in hours, minutes, seconds, and days.

Much like the original military pilot watch it’s based on, the Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition is designed for heavy use in extreme environments, with a scratch-resistant sapphire glass face and water resistance up to 100 meters. Porsche Design clearly loves paying homage to its classic design, saying, “The new edition’s design, especially the matte-black dial, is of course still reminiscent of the icon from the 1970s.”

Its strap, made of “Genuine Porsche vehicle leather and textile,” is coated with black titanium carbide coating and has the lettering “Porsche Design Utility 2024 Chronograph 1 Limited Edition” etched into the back. As a result, its all-black exterior is as trendy and chic as it is impervious to the elements.

The Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition watch is currently available to pre-order on Porsche Design’s website for $13,000. Only 250 pieces will be manufactured, and they will begin shipping out on January 15, 2024.

TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition chronograph evokes the spirit of motor racing

Ayrton Senna was and will always be the legend of Formula-1, no matter how many champion drivers we see in our lifetime. That fateful day at the San Marino GP in 1994, if that fatal crash would not happened, he would have achieved unfathomable glory, if already he hasn’t already.

TAG Heuer has long been associated with the man’s laurels – after all, he is the heritage ambassador for the brand since my memory aids. The Swiss watchmaker has never even thought of letting go of the icon’s name, since 1988. The brand’s Formula 1 Special Edition unveiled last year is a testament to the bond.

Now the watchmaking pro has released yet another Formula 1 Senna Edition automatic chronograph which is powered by the in-house Calibre 16 automatic movement. The 44mm dial of the timepiece has the Senna’s “S” in red color at the 12 o’clock position on the ring of the sunray-brushed dial. Red accents dominate the watch’s face which is in honor of the highlighting hue on the racer’s first TAG Heuer watch. Along with the signature “S”, the 2 o’clock pusher and the crown also have the same hue.

There are three chronograph subdials for the hours, minutes, and seconds hand which all have a dark black azurage hue. Those rhodium indexes and hands get the luminescent Super-LumiNova coating which is not surprising. The date aperture is positioned at the 3 o’clock position, while the ceramic fixed bezel tachymeter goes up to 400 km/h which represents the speed the fastest circuit racing cars can achieve. Akin to all the previous watches by TAG Heuer, this one also has the typical 90s-styled S/EL bracelet (Senna used to sport it on his wrist) in brushed steel and typically shaped links. The previous Senna Formula 1 Edition had the leather strap, so there’s this major distinction between the two.

The 200 meters water-resistant automatic chronograph has a power reserve of 42 hours and a 28,800 bph beat rate. The caseback is also made in stainless steel with the Senna’s race driving silhouette adding that special touch. The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Special Edition watch can be bought right away from the watchmaker’s official online store for $3,550.

This immaculate skeletal watch comes with a custom movement and a carbon fiber body!

Even though the NB24 watch is quite literally ‘love at first sight’ with its beautiful chassis-inspired skeletal design, it is the watch’s backstory that is truly remarkable. We covered one of Code41’s watches last year, a mechanical marvel that was designed to be the world’s first unisex mechanical watch, with creative inputs from a diverse team of men and women. The NB24 by Code41 comes with a strong source of inspiration too – it pays tribute to the company’s ambassador, Nigel Bailly – a young paraplegic who will be fulfilling his dream of driving the famed 24-hour Le Mans circuit in June 2021.

The NB24 is a remarkable mechanical watch that showcases a unique skeletal design that highlights the watch’s complexity. It sports a one-of-a-kind custom mechanical movement on the inside – designed specifically for the NB24 watch – with a peripheral oscillating weight that swings to and fro, and is visible on the front of the watch itself. The weight goes through its oscillating motion continuously for 24 hours, both charging the watch as well as highlighting the 24-hour continuous journey Nigel Bailly will have to make during the Le Mans.

The watch’s outer body (and parts of the dial) come in two variants, a light, resilient Grade 5 Titanium (often seen in high-performance tools or luxury EDC), with the option of an AeroCarbon variant too, where the entire watch’s body is made from carbon-fiber – a hat tip to the race-cars used in Le Mans, among other racing circuits. The aeronautical-grade carbon-fiber is twice as light as titanium, and is 2.5 times more resistant to bending than steel. The carbon-fiber for the AeroCarbon cases is produced on-demand in France, with as many as 300 layers, each placed at 90° to the previous and compacted under 10 bars of pressure in an autoclave oven. This gives the material its resilience and its density, while also making the AeroCarbon variant of the NB24 watertight without needing a separate titanium waterproofing chamber.

A major part of the NB24 watch’s design was informed by Code41’s own ethical approach to production too. The watch falls under the company’s TTO (Total Transparency on Origin) label which means consumers get to see where each component is being sourced from, and also at what cost. “We clearly explain the production costs and mark-ups required for the project to be profitable, so that we can concentrate on what we’re really passionate about: creating high-quality mechanical watches”, says Claudio D’Amore, Founder and CEO of Code41. This approach means the watch’s official price isn’t a number engineered by the marketing team, but is rather a very realistic reflection of the NB24’s cost of production. Watches are built based on pre-orders, helping keep inventory costs to a minimum, along with a special 3-year guarantee. Not to mention the fact that it’s probably the most competitively priced for a carbon-fiber/titanium timepiece with a custom one-of-a-kind mechanical movement!

NB24 Creator Edition Chronograph by Code41

Following 9 months of development, thousands of votes and comments from the community have allowed Code41 to make the NB24 chronograph a reality. For the NB24, they have made the move of creating an exclusive movement with a peripheral weight integrated into the dial side.

Features of the NB24 Chronograph

  • Exclusive movement just for the CODE41 community.
  • Peripheral oscillating weight on the dial side.
  • Movement designed, made and assembled entirely in Switzerland in short production runs.
  • Unbeatable value for money.
  • Finished and assembled by hand.

An Exceptional Movement

As the chronograph is one of Code41’s partner Concepto’s specialties, they have been able to make use of their base, constructed using the architecture of the famous 7750 movement, known for its robustness and reliability. Code41 modified it by moving the counters, redesigning the bridges, and above all adding a peripheral weight on the dial side. This rare complication alone accounts for a third of the cost of production. It’s important to point out that all of the components, except for the mainspring and the jewels, are produced in-house.

An Exceptional Manufacturer

Based in the heartland of Swiss watchmaking, the manufacturer Concepto was founded in 2006, and today boasts a team of 120 people who handle all of the watchmaking expertise in-house.

Strong Design – High-tech Materials

NB24 AeroCarbon – Extremely strong, carbon fiber is one of those technical materials that combines perfectly with mechanical watchmaking magic. But we didn’t want any old carbon fiber, we wanted the best of the best. The AeroCarbon’s case is made from a high-density aeronautical carbon fiber.

Produced for us on-demand in France, the blocks are made up of over 300 layers, each placed at 90° to the previous and compacted under 10 bars of pressure in an autoclave oven. This process guarantees an exceptional composite 2.5 times more resistant to bending than steel.

In addition, due to its high density, AeroCarbon is watertight without the need to add a titanium chamber, as is the case with the carbon fiber, less dense and more porous, typically used in watchmaking.

NB24 Ti5 – Titanium offers the comfortable advantage of being around twice as light as steel. For our NB24 chronograph, they opted for grade 5 titanium. It’s more expensive than grade 2, but it offers double the toughness and finer detail in the finishing.

Purpose of the Oscillating Weight Explained

So-called ‘automatic’ mechanical movements are fitted with an oscillating weight that recharges the watch through wrist movements (no battery required). As it swings from left to right, the weight rewinds the mainspring, which stores the energy required for the mechanism to function correctly.

Dial-side Peripheral Oscillating Weight: The peripheral weight is a real technical feat, today mastered by only a handful of brands. Code41 already fitted one to their X41 movement, but for their NB24 chronograph they have gone even further by making it visible on the dial side. It’s a defining feature found on very few pieces.

NB24 – The Realization of a Dream

The NB24 encapsulates the story of ambassador Nigel Bailly and his dream of taking part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. When this young paraplegic driver shared with Code41 his passion and determination in 2017, and the team was immediately drawn in and decided to accompany him in his adventure.

After 3 years of relentless work, Nigel will take part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June 2021, thus proving that nothing is impossible. Nigel’s courage and determination are an inspiration. This chrono project is dedicated to him.

The Odyssey Watch’s vanishing chronograph dials showcase the passage of time in a space-inspired theme

Whether it’s via the air, land, or sea, fantastic voyages have long inspired timepiece design and the modern Odyssey watch is no exception. The masculine design looks to our eventual space travel as inspiration for its subtly futuristic yet sophisticated aesthetic.

It’s an elegant, modern take on a classic precision timepiece – the chronograph. Its distinguished sub-dials have marked plates in place of traditional hands, creating the illusion of time passing as numbers slowly vanish out of sight. Dotted markers orbit at varying speeds, drawing the eye to a graceful movement while indicated the time elapsed.

Designers: Sahil Ravjit & Andra Wibisono

odyssey_movement_opens_in_chrome

The chronograph dials have a transparent gradient that reveals only the time being tracked. It also creates an illusion of time passing, as the numbers slowly fade out of sight. The dotted markers orbit at varying speeds, indicating seconds, minutes and hours, with elegant movement.

For the logo they wanted to use something universal and simple. They chose earth – a circle with a 23.5˚ line passing through it, representing it’s tilted axis.

Nordgreen’s minimalist Scandinavian watches get a fitting upgrade

You can only go so far with designing a good product. The product also needs to echo the values of a brand. People who buy products don’t buy them only because of their aesthetics or functionality. A major underlying motive is emotional connect… and that happens with a product, but more strongly with a brand. It’s probably why iPhone users are still iPhone users, or people who drive Teslas aren’t probably going to buy a Hummer any time soon. A brand’s core values, paired with good design, can often form an unbreakable bond with its users… and it’s rare in the fashion, apparel, and accessory industry, but Nordgreen’s carving its niche there too, as a brand which embodies the Scandinavian values of minimalism… and also of charity.

Nordgreen’s watches, designed by Jakob Wagner, embody simplicity and symmetry that’s typical of Nordic design. Nothing is out of place, everything is structured, with a role to play, and has an overall visually calming effect on oneself. Nordgreen’s latest watches, the Pioneer, and a redesign of its popular model Native, embrace that minimalism as their true identity. The watch’s aesthetics take inspiration from Nordic values as well as Wagner’s work for past companies like Bang & Olufsen, Muuto, and B&B Italia. Pioneer and Native both speak of different aesthetics within the broader domain of minimalist design.

The Pioneer, a completely new offering, celebrates Danish innovation and science for humanity. With a 42mm body that sports 2 subdials, the Pioneer is as beautiful as it’s informative. The two subdials help you count down the minutes and the seconds with accuracy, while a date window at the 6 o’clock position provides perfect visual balance between all the components. The subdials hands come with red tips too, reminiscent of the Danish Windmills. The Pioneer, in its own way, speaks of the Danish pioneering spirit, and captures the sustainable future the Danes are constantly working towards. Nordgreen’s second watch in this series is a remodeled variant of their classic offering, the Native… a watch that serves as a hat-tip to Copenhagen’s ‘disruptive aesthetic’. Designed to be in the balanced image of the city, the re-modeled Native comes in a new 32mm casing, and sports a combination of metallic as well as see-through markings, indicative of the fact that the people of Copenhagen live in the moment, rather than count the minutes.

Both watches feature a 316L Stainless Steel body with a Japanese Miyota Quartz movement on the inside and a domed sapphire crystal covering the watch’s sheer simplistic beauty. The watches, available in a variety of classical color schemes, come with interchangeable metallic mesh and Italian leather straps, giving you a watch that’s truly a modern Scandinavian classic.

A strong aspect of Nordgreen’s brand is also its commitment to charity, a core value that Danes uphold with tenacity. As a part of their Giving Back Programme, with each purchase, Nordgreen allows users to select one out of three charities that Nordgreen will support on their behalf. All watches come with a custom tracking number engraved on the back that allows you to see the progress made by your donation.

Nordgreen, as a brand, embodies values that most watch brands do not. Deep in an industry that deals with status symbols and luxury, Nordgreen’s watches look absolutely stunning, but are backed by more human values, of social awareness, minimal living, and a charitable outlook… and that brand of humanity helps Nordgreen be much more than just a watchmaker.

NOOKRONO, Chronograph Watch by Nooka

You know I’m a huge fan of Nooka, purveyor of the most unique watches you can decorate your wrist with, but all their timepieces were digital, until now. The NOOKRONO is their first chronograph and true to Nooka form, it’s eye catching and minimalistic while retaining a sexy level of futurism.

The movement is neither Swiss or Japanese. Nooka has taken all aspects of engineering in-house. Not an easy task but their attention to detail and craftsmanship is reassuring. All hands will move smoothly around that beautiful face. I personally love the NOOKRONO MULTI (blue and orange) and the NOOKRONO NIGHT (black with stainless steel band).

So how do you get one? It’s already reach its funding goal on Indiegogo eclipsing its original 10k goal 6x. With 30 days left on the “clock” (bad pun I know), that means you still have time to get yours and lock in the special price. This is not a paid advertisement. I’m just a fan who loves the design. I don’t even wear watches but I’ll wear the hell out of these.

And if you’re wondering when you’ll get them – Decemberish 2014… what a nice holiday gift!
