This tiny Micro SD card organizer is a blast from the 90s

Before CDs and DVDs revolutionized physical media in the 1990s, people mostly used floppy disks — little square pucks containing less than 2.8 megabytes of storage. If you collected a lot of floppy disks, for instance, the original release of DOOM (which released across four 3.5 inch floppy disks), you needed a place to put them. Back then, that meant keeping your disk collection in a whole bunch of beige boxes with tinted plastic coverings, locked shut with a simple mechanism.

Apparently, that design — despite its relative clunkiness and odd fit for modern offices — is nostalgic to collectors of modern physical media devices like Micro SD cards and Nintendo Switch cartridges, and, as a result, independent artist Trevor Flowers has designed his own tributes to the classic floppy disk holder design. Calling it the “Smol Floppy Disk Organizer for Micro SD Cards” on his Gumroad page, this adorable replica of days gone by can fit on any desk surface thanks to its near-microscopic size.

Designer: Trevor Flowers

“Back when floppies were new we kept them safe in somewhat terrible plastic bins,” says Flowers in the description of his Micro SD card holder.

“Now that micro SD cards can hold thousands of times more data they’re what we use and what we lose! Because, smol. So, here’s a little throwback to the floppy organizer but sized for micro SD cards. I used double-sided tape to stick mine to the top of my PC monitor because I’d lose it on my messy desk.”

The Smol Floppy Disk Organizer for Micro SD Cards is available to purchase on Flowers’ official Gumroad page for $22, though it seems like supplies are limited as only 37 units remain. The same is true of his Smol Floppy Disk Organizer for Switch Cartridges, of which only 8 remain as I write this article. It’s unclear whether more will be constructed, though it’s worth noting the build is quite cute and may even have mass-market appeal for collectors.

Smol Floppy Disk Organizers aren’t the only unique retro design Flowers has come up with. On his page, you can find other bespoke (and somewhat larger) tributes to the TRS-80 Model III and the Osborne One.

Top 21 Ways to Organize Your Jewelry and Keep Them Neat

Jewelry comes in different shapes, sizes, and lengths, so each piece needs to be stored properly, and sorted by category. Maintaining an organized system not only safeguards your jewelry items but also simplifies the process of identifying jewelry that requires cleaning and keeps a record of your collection. Also, this approach assists in preventing the loss or theft of jewelry. However, before arranging your jewelry, examine each piece, eliminate those damaged pieces, donate pieces you will not wear, and mend pieces that need repair. Adopt these suggestions for the secure and efficient storage of your jewelry.

Designer: Amie Freling-Brown

1. Jewelry Drawers

Dedicate a shallow drawer in your bedroom or closet specifically for jewelry storage that ensures convenient access to your pieces. Introduce compartments of various sizes that allow you to categorize different pieces of jewelry such as necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and other items into distinct slots. If the drawer is deep, you can double the storage capacity by placing an additional jewelry tray on top of the first one.

2. Wall-Mounted Jewelry Organizer

Designer: Keebofly

Designer: FanBeautyLife

Logitech Casa Pop-up Desk offers a more ergonomic way to use your laptop anywhere

As convenient and powerful as laptops might be, they’re the least ergonomic computers in use today, at least if use them on their own. Sure, you can hook up an external monitor or put it on a stand, but you’ll also need to connect a separate keyboard and mouse to be able to comfortably use the laptop in that setup. That’s fine when you’re working in the office, but totally inconvenient anywhere else, even at home. Carrying these different pieces with you around is already a chore, but keeping them neatly bundled together is just as much a hassle. The past three years have seen a drastic change in the way we work and where we work, and Logitech is making sure we’re all well-prepared for this hybrid setup with what can be best described as a bento box that will let you work with your laptop in an ergonomic fashion anywhere you need to.

Designer: Logitech

Laptop design, which hasn’t significantly changed in the past decades, is full of ergonomic flaws. It forces you to crane your neck down, and the cramped keyboard easily strains your wrists and arms. Elevating the laptop screen to a more natural eye level is possible with a stand, but that also requires you to give up the laptop’s built-in keyboard and trackpad for separate accessories. Keeping them all together in a tidy space can be a chore, but the new Logitech Casa Pop-up Desk solves that in a beautiful and effective manner.

In its closed state, the Logitech Casa looks almost like a giant fabric-covered notebook or book, complete with an elastic band to make sure it remains closed. It’s a stylish design that won’t look out of place on your desk, in your bag, or even on your shelf, looking just like any other stationery or book in your collection. Looks can be deceiving, as they say, and opening this “book” up reveals a different kind of treasure, one that’s aimed to boost your productivity wherever you decide to set up shop.

There are sections for the wireless keyboard and wireless touchpad that comes with the package, and there’s also a covered compartment for things like cables, pens, and other small items. More importantly, the cover angles up to become an elevated stand for your laptop, raising its screen higher to reduce neck strain and promote proper sitting posture. Together with the wireless keyboard and touchpad, the Casa Pop-up Desk quickly sets up an ergonomic office anywhere while making sure that all the important pieces are stored safely once you’re done and ready to jet.

The Logitech Casa supports any laptop between 10 to 17 inches and under 7.5kg, which pretty much covers most of the “portable” laptops in the market today. It does still require you to prop up your tools on a desk and not on your lap, but that is also the common case even for those working away from the office. Available in three beautiful color combinations, the Logitech Casa Pop-up Desk cost 179.99 GBP, around $230, though there is no word yet on availability in other markets.

How to Organize Toys: 25 Ideas for a Safe Home and a Stress-free Playtime

If there are toddlers at home, there will inevitably be a multitude of toys as well. As a result, the play area, bedroom, and entire house can often be in a state of perpetual chaos. For parents, each day tends to follow a predictable routine where the child empties the toy bin and engages in brief play with a toy, only to become quickly captivated by something new. Consequently, the parent is left with an ongoing cycle of tidying up.

Hence, here are some tips to create a more organized storage solution for toys.

1. Label Storage Tubs

Designer: Love and Labels

Labeling the storage tubs and containers is highly recommended so that it is easier to keep the toys in them and segregate them accordingly. Note that a toy lacking a designated place to call home will likely contribute to ongoing disorganization.

2. Storage Baskets

Designer: PEHR

Baskets or toy bins serve as excellent tools for keeping similar items together while encouraging children to choose and focus on one or two toys at a time. Shelves and baskets offer a wide range of options, including diverse shapes, materials, and sizes, allowing one to find the perfect fit for your organizing the toys.

3. Transparent Containers

Designer: Jess Galvin

The transparent organization boxes are perfect for storing toys by category. Keep toys within sight as if the toy is out of sight, it’s out of a child’s mind. Ensuring that toys are visible is crucial because if they can’t see a toy, they might perceive it as non-existent.

4. Buy a Toy Storage Organizer

Designer: KidKraft

If there is no additional cabinet space, buy a toy storage organizer. Consider choosing tilted bin units that provide a clear view of the contents inside. This setup may be the perfect solution to encourage your kids to actively tidy up their toys by eliminating the need to pull out and put back the bins.

5. Lego Lover

Designer: Stephanie Treantos

If your child has a passion for Legos, consider using transparent containers for storage. By organizing the Lego pieces by color, finding and retrieving specific pieces during playtime becomes much simpler, enhancing their overall Lego-building experience.

6. Magnetic knife rack

Designer: Kayla South (with IKEA GRUNDTAL knife rack)

Install a magnetic strip on the wall to serve as a storage solution for toy cars making it a convenient and efficient way to keep them organized.

7. Playroom Closet

Designer: CW Home

Have a playroom closet where toys can be stored by category where one can allocate a shelf for board games, another for toy bins, for car displays, and so on. It is highly recommended to provide a limited number of toys to enable children to quickly find and choose their preferred playthings.

8. Built-in Storage

Designer: Jennifer Maune

Built-in storage with closed cabinets can effectively keep toy clutter at bay while maintaining a neat and clean appearance. The cabinets conceal the clutter of toys, creating a visually appealing space.

9. Car Garage

Designer: Ryan Wolosek

An array of wooden shelves is perfect for displaying toy cars and is a great way to create a stylish and organized display. It enhances the visual appeal of the room and encourages the children to keep the toys in the correct place.

10. Storage box

Designer: Katrina Teeple

Maintaining a neat and tidy environment by keeping the toys neatly in a storage box. Sort the toys by category with storage containers as it prevents the box from looking messy.

11. Window Seat

Designer: Biz Martin

Make optimum use of the window seats by utilizing the space below for storing or organizing children’s toys and books so that they are easily accessible for children.

12. Low-height Storage

Designer: Kayla Hollomon (with IKEA TROFAST)

Consider low-level storage as it is ideal for toddlers and allows easy access to toys. This type of storage solution is reachable by young children, making it convenient for them to independently select their toys and books.

13. Get Creative

This setup incorporates a study area with bins placed below a table for storing toys. The overhead shelves feature separate containers for storage, while a shelf is dedicated to soft toys. Additionally, the shelves are creatively painted in the shape of a house, adding character and visual appeal. This low-cost approach creates an interesting and engaging space for children.

14. Make Optimum Use of Walls

Designer: The Road Forks

Sleek shelves are an ideal choice for displaying books without overwhelming the space. Keeping the shelves’ front visible makes it easier for children to select their favorite books. This storage solution combines functionality and accessibility, making it convenient for children to pick up their preferred books.

15. Get Creative with Storage

Designer: Hand Makes Home (with IKEA TROFAST)

This setup showcases various designs of containers and bins for toy storage, adding an aesthetically pleasing touch that avoids a dull or monotonous appearance. The assortment of containers adds visual interest while maintaining a functional storage solution for toys.

16. Use Planter Pots

Designer: Kayla Hollomon

Install hanging planter bins to efficiently segregate toys and books by category. Suspended from a rod, these bins maximize space utilization while providing a visually appealing storage solution. Organize your child’s belongings with ease and style using these functional and space-saving planter bins.

17. Floating Shelves

Designer: Kayla Hollomon

If space is limited, floating shelves can be the perfect solution for displaying books. Consider using glass shelves for a sleek and modern look, or opt for readymade shelves for convenience. These space-saving options allow you to showcase your books while maximizing the available space in your home.

18. Corner Shelves

Designer: Ashley Johnston

Make the most of unused corners by transforming them into storage areas for children’s toys and books. Utilizing shelves in these corners provides an excellent solution for organizing and storing toys, books, and games. As children outgrow toys, the shelf space can be repurposed for books, ensuring a seamless transition and efficient use of the available storage area.

19. Under-bed Storage

How to save desk space with this organizer disguised as a file binder

If our floor space is already at a premium, our desk space is even more so. As the number of objects on our work tables grows, our space for keeping them in place becomes increasingly smaller. It’s no wonder why there’s an overabundance of desk organizers in the market, but these, too, occupy precious space that could otherwise be used for more important tools or accessories. For convenience, most organizers are laid out horizontally, but that’s definitely not the only design available. If saving space is more important than instant access, this desk organizer might actually be more effective, especially since it can put tools and other objects out of sight and out of mind when you don’t need them.

Designer: Nakabayashi

You might have plenty of stationery, supplies, and tools, but chances are that you’ll only ever use a select handful of these most of the time. You might find a bit of comfort in seeing them all the time, but they only eat up space all the time as well. Organizers, by their nature, can at least keep them tidy and in their proper places, but they also create visual clutter that could affect our subconscious minds. You could stash them away in drawers, but you’d be out of luck if your minimalist desk does have any.

It’s for cases like these that this rather ingenious organizer design comes in handy. From the outside and when they’re closed, they look like regular, nondescript file binders. Open them up, however, and you’ll see plenty of space for almost any kind of tool or supply. Simply pull one out using the typical ring hole, open it up, and you’ll have access to whatever you need to get the job done. It’s only a few steps more compared to reaching out for an open desk organizer but not much more compared to pulling out tools from a drawer.

Despite their obvious associations with desk or office supplies, these Lifestyle Tool File organizers can really hold anything you can think of, including baby products or an emergency kit. When you don’t need access to these objects, you can simply file them away on a shelf or something similar. You might even be tempted to go wild with a library of binders full of tools and accessories for any occasion.

These file binders come in A4 and B5 sizes to really drive home the illusion. Made from hard paperboard, the organizers also offer a more sustainable solution to the growing number of plastic products sitting on your desk. Unless you group a dozen or so together, they also take up little horizontal desk space, making them ideal for more space-constrained setups. For even more restricted spaces, there’s also a tall box that unfolds to reveal a few container pockets in the same vein, allowing people to maximize the space they have without having to say goodbye to their favorite tools.

EDITOR'S QUOTE:

With a stylish combination of wood and metal, the Quick-Access Organizer makes putting your EDC stuff where they belong a fun and satisfying task.

Almost everyone knows they should keep their desks organized, depending on their definition of the word, but few people actually like doing it. Just like any other chore, desk organization feels boring and a waste of time, at least until you actually lose time looking for things you need right at that moment. Ironic as it may sound, the biggest culprits in messy desks are things that don’t even belong there, at least not for long periods of time. Glasses, wallets, watches, and accessories that we bring with us often land on our tables and then seemingly disappear into the unknown. Giving these transient objects a better home goes a long way in fixing this problem, but you still have to build up the habit of putting them there. This minimalist beauty of a box promises to make that habit almost fun, so we take it for a spin to see if we can catch the organizing bug with it.

Aesthetics

Truth be told, almost any container can accomplish the task of giving your Everyday Carry items a fixed home on your desk. That’s the reason why there’s an inexhaustible number of options in the market for desk organizers of all shapes and sizes. Developing the habit, however, is just as important as the receptacle, and habits, good or bad, are formed when the action has very little friction and can even be fun.

The Revov Tray Box helps you form that good habit by presenting a box that is not only easy to use but also a delight to look at. The form of the organizer itself might not be groundbreaking, but the combination of colors and materials truly makes it stand out among your other desk accessories. It’s something you’ll want to put on display, which often also means putting it within arm’s reach and reducing the friction of putting things in or taking them out.

The top tray is made from Beech Wood, giving it a warm and soft visual. The unique wood grains also make each tray truly one-of-a-kind, adding a sense of luxury to the product. The wood also makes the tray light, assisting in the organizer’s signature revolving trick. The bottom box, in contrast, is made from milled aluminum, and its smooth, cold texture complements well with the tray above it.

This Quick-Access Organizer is definitely a pleasure to look at, making it easier to get used to its presence and, in the long run, its purpose. If there’s one thing that could bother some people, it is the thin gap that exists between the tray lid and the body. This gap makes it look like the lid is floating slightly above the box, and it’s necessary to make its smooth movement possible. The gap is so thin that it could almost be negligible, but small things like that could trip up a few detail-oriented people.

Ergonomics

The Revov Tray Box is designed to be easy to use without forgetting the fact that you’re supposed to be organizing things, not just dumping them in a single bin. There are two distinct containers for that purpose, and the system smartly uses the box’s lid as another container for items you need to quickly drop and pick up again repeatedly. Normally, that would mean not having quick access to the contents of the box, but that is exactly what sets this ingenious desk organizer apart.

A little push of the tray, or perhaps a pull of the finger from one of the corners, makes it swivel around smoothly, revealing the treasures that the box holds inside. There is literally almost no friction, so there’s also no excuse not to make use of space for your EDC or other possessions. Another push spins the tray back to its closed position. It doesn’t go free-spinning, though, because powerful magnets stop it at the right positions.

This spinning action does mean there will be a lot of movement, but, fortunately, the solid aluminum base gives the box the stability it needs to prevent it from tipping over. At the same time, however, it also means that the Revov, as a whole, is a bit heftier than most box organizers. You might also want to avoid putting very heavy objects on the top tray when the box is empty, as gravity could still make the box tip backward when the center of gravity is off.

Although not directly related to its usability, the box does require some free space around it to actually work properly. There should be clearance on all sides for the tray to spin and stay in place, so you can’t have it extremely close to walls or other tall objects. It does also have the side effect of making the box really stand out on your desk, showing off its stylish minimalism, along with your precious EDC possessions.

Performance

This beautiful box organizer makes keeping your desk neat a frictionless task by almost literally removing the friction from putting things where they should belong. For EDC and small tools, the smooth revolving mechanism is a joy to use and is almost addictive in how easy it is to spin. You could almost use it as a fidget toy, though that will be cutting it short in what it can accomplish for your long-term peace of mind.

The Revov box is also intended to house small items, which also explains its small capacity. The box inside has enough space for a small wallet, but anything larger won’t fit. The tray on top might be able to hold some money clips, keys, glasses, a pen, and even a phone lying a bit on its side. If you regularly have larger EDC tools in your pocket or bag, this, unfortunately, won’t be their home.

The two parts of the organizer contrast not only in their materials but also in their layouts. The tray lid has carved sections that determine and limit the objects you can place on top. The bin inside, on the other hand, has absolutely no dividers, which means things will end up getting mixed a lot. You could put in your own makeshift dividers, but that’s additional work for very little gain, especially if you change the layout every so often.

Sustainability

As with any well-designed product, this Quick-Access Organizer also puts a lot of thought into its long-term appeal. Fortunately, the Tray Box checks all the right boxes when it comes to offering a sustainable solution to your everyday clutter. For one, there are no harmful materials used to make this stylish box, from the wooden lid to the aluminum box to the magnets and metal pin that give it a smooth spinning motion.

The Revov box is also long-lasting and durable thanks to those same materials as well as the absence of complex mechanisms. Only a single metal pin serves as the pivot that connects the lid and the box. You can easily oil this pin or its hole when its movement starts to get rough. On the flip side, however, that small metal piece could also be lost, making it hard to find a replacement that will fit perfectly. It is possible, though, so it’s not a complete loss.

Value

Made from premium and sustainable materials, the Quick-Access Organizer brings a beautiful, durable, and enduring tool to keep your desk tidy while also serving as a piece of decoration for that very same desk. Its magic trick of swinging smoothly to reveal a small but spacious container inside never gets old. In fact, you might be tempted to turn it into an ad hoc fidget toy, idly spinning the empty tray around while you let your mind wander. In other words, it’s a multifunctional desk accessory that hides its talents behind a minimalist facade.

It doesn’t come without its price, though, especially the literal one. At $69, it’s not exactly the cheapest box you could place your things in, though it is admittedly not the most expensive either. But while there are plenty of modular or multifunctional desk organizers in the market, few will hit all the right points for something that is that and more. Fortunately, this tray and box combo swings the right way.

Verdict

Keeping your desk tidy shouldn’t be a painful task. In fact, it has to be something you enjoy so that you’ll keep doing it over and over again. Unfortunately, our minds seem to be preconditioned to immediately cringe at the thought of cleaning up. Fortunately, there’s less to clean up if you put things where they should be in the first place.

Desk organizers make it easy to do that, but the Quick-Access Organizer makes it feel fun. A quick push swings the cover away to let you access the storage inside the box, and the way the tray lid snaps into position is so satisfying that it’s almost addictive. Sure, it’s a bit on the pricier side of things, and you’ll need to make some room for its swiveling top, but when you have something so handsome and long-lasting as this, you’ll definitely want to show it off by itself anyway.

This DIY desk organizer trades minimalism for a quirkier and more interesting design

Products don’t have to be minimalist to be beautiful and useful. Sometimes, having more personality works better to make your desk feel alive.

The phrase “what’s old is new again” can be applied to many things in human history, but it is most often used for fashion and design trends. Minimalism grew almost as a counter-culture to the extravagances of modern products and lifestyles, but that, too, can be taken to the extreme. Recently, there has been a bit of pushback to make the things around us look less uniform and visually more interesting. While not exactly in the realm of maximalism, this contrarian desk organizer tries to embrace some of the characteristics and materials of minimalist products but doesn’t shy away from mashing forms and shapes together to create beautiful order out of chaos.

Designer: Snehal Garg

Given their nature as things to organize other things, you’d expect desk and stationery organizers to be the epitome of order and organization themselves. In practice, that isn’t exactly a hard requirement, but that has become the norm against which these accessories are measured. Of course, nothing says clean and orderly better than a minimalist design, but even then, some desk organizers have tried to stand out from the crowd in their own ways.

It’s almost difficult to see Desco as an organizer, given how it visually looks disorganized on its own. It utilizes different shapes that seem to be haphazardly thrown together, as well as lines that cut through each other at odd angles. And unlike traditional desk organizers, you almost have to stop and think which items go where because, despite its seemingly random design, each nook and cranny of the Desco actually serves a specific purpose.

That large acrylic circle in the middle, for example, has slits that are designed to hold notebooks, while the space going through the pipe shape can hold pens and even rolls of paper. The slanted foot has space for a few sheets of paper, while the acrylic surface of one of the wooden boxes can be used as a tiny wall for sticky notes. There is also plenty of space for all kinds of tools and knick-knacks, including a tray for your phone, earbuds, or smartwatch. There’s even a surface that can be used to keep your favorite mug within arm’s reach.

Despite its jumble of shapes, Desco still adheres to minimalism as far as the surfaces themselves go. The smooth wooden parts give it a clean look, while transparent acrylic gives an illusion of floating in the air. There’s also a bit of sustainability in its design, though using something more biodegradable than acrylic would be ideal. More importantly, Desco carries with it some character compared to most desk organizers, looking more like a battle station that’s ready to give you the tools you need to survive your workday.

This modern refrigerator optimizes storage and organization with smart technology

The Aura refrigerator is a modern home appliance equipped with smart technology to optimize storage and use.

As we sink deeper into the world of technology, so do our homes and home appliances. Smart technology dictates most of the controls behind modern kitchen appliances like refrigerators and dishwashers, but their overall look has largely stayed in the past. Hoping to bring the refrigerator into the modern era by reshaping its structure and technical fittings to accommodate today’s smart technology and environmental needs, Aura is a new type of refrigerator. Designed by FUHUA Design Studio, the Aura refrigerator breaks down the conventional fridge into smaller compartments to allocate the energy used and minimize its impact.

Designer: FUHUA Design

The eggs and additional breakfast-ready food items can be found in one slide-out drawer, while the beers and other late-night beverages are reserved for a unique pull-out caddy. Describing the design choice behind breaking down the fridge into small compartments, FUHUA explains, “Dividing the door into smaller compartments allows users to have quick access to the frequently used items, thus reducing the energy waste by optimizing user behavior.”

Additionally, the refrigerator automatically turns its lights off when users aren’t around. Then, once someone enters the kitchen, Aura gradually illuminates its internal lighting to invite the users for something to drink and a bite to eat. Appearing like a genial cabinet, Aura is designed for optimal organization, allowing users to easily pull out food and drink items according to their designated compartment.

Without having to open the door, users will be able to see what’s inside the fridge thanks to the integrated backlight, “When approached by the user, the brightness increases as if AURA warmly greets them. At the same time, the soft back-light creates elegant silhouettes of the items inside on the translucent glass door, to remind the users what they have in the fridge without having to open the door.”
